My Father worked at the Berkeley Pit for 26 years and was at the bottom of the pit the day that drilled into a natural underground water spring causing the pit to fill. The rock truck that is at the museum was also driven by my dad. He sadly passed in 2016, I love you pop!
The reason I like this channel is because he doesn't bore me with stupid jokes or belittle me with stupid cartoons or make embarrassing facial expressions, etc.... In other words, he doesn't waste my time. He satisfies my curiosity with a "matter of fact " manner in a pleasant voice.
I dunno why, but old mining sites filled with water triggers my anxiety. I can swim and regularly do in lakes but the thought of being on the edge and accidentally falling into a deep deep water hole gives me goosebumps
I get the same anxiety, and I think it's a sound warning. Quarry lakes are deadly, horrible places. Unlike a natural lake, there is no beach leading gently down into the water, so you can't venture in just a little to see if you like it. If you fall off the edge, you're immediately in tens of feet of bone-chilling water. I was told the water in these quarry pits is extremely cold, which will suck the heat out of your body and kill you quickly if you go in. Almost nothing seems to live in such water - at any rate one usually sees no vegetation on the surface, and you can't see anything at all through the pale dust with which the water is charged from the quarry workings. Keep well back.
Grew up in a former mining city area -- Pittsburgh -- we played pick up ball in a field with lots of bricks creating a partial floor. My neighbors had a small spring on their property. It was mine water -- nothing lived in it and we'd all been told do not drink unless you have a death wish. A wooded area behind the brick field was a great play area but again there were small shallow sinkholes we also were taught not to step into because getting out could trigger it sinking further. We used rope, defying the adult wisdom.
While the title does not suggest it, I was expecting this to be only natural holes. I am also surprized that none are Craters from meteorites. Looking forward to maybe seeing those as three categories, Natural, Man-Made, and Impacts.
Makes you wonder why the Russian hole is just in a random torn down building, and not a protected site. I mean, they could even tear down the rest of the structure, remove the debris and pour a concrete slab over top of the opening. Anyone with a grinder could just get through that cap if they wanted to.
My guess is because they don't try to protect people from themselves much. Which is fine by me. If someone cuts the cap off, they'll just bolt some sort of thing back on. No toddler is going to fall in, and if anyone is dumb enough to both cut the top off and fall in.... good?
The Bingham Canyon Mine , more commonly known as Kennecott Copper Mine among locals, is an open-pit mining operation extracting a large porphyry copper deposit southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Oquirrh Mountains. The mine is the largest man-made excavation, and deepest open-pit mine in the world, which is considered to have produced more copper than any other mine in history - more than 19 million tons. The mine is owned by Rio Tinto Group

6:57 A fun practical joke would be to have a hidden swimming pool in that underground reservoir and when the people are down there, suddenly release all the water from a hidden spot to give the illusion that the place is being flooded.
Those strange sounds were terrifying. Art Bell was h first to broadcast them... It was screaming. The sound of hundreds, thousands, of people screaming. I'm not kidding.
Many years have passed in Yamal with their new giant holes. There is no explanation for this phenomenon, just like in Mexico with their fresh holes on the highway in the middle of the desert. Прошло много лет на Ямале с их новыми гигантскими дырами, Объяснение этому явлению нет, как и в Мексике с их свежими дырами на дорожной магистрали среди пустыни.
They're called 'tailings' and are usually spread out around the area of excavation. You would be surprised at how low a 3000 foot mountain is when spread out over an area, but not all of it ends up there.
"The Bore Hole" was an article in the "Weekly Reader" handed out to students in my early era. I don't remember any mention of Russia. Also, why you mention USA and Russia and show Polish Troops?
We can all agree that he has never disappointed us with this content, very, very cool, I also shoot such videos about interesting mysterious facts come see☺

Did these holes form over millions of years or could they have formed during the great flood where “All the fountains of the great deep were broken up”? The older I get, the more evidence I see where the book of Genesis is true. Great video!
Long time ago earth was just a smaller rock with no planets or water but cover in ice. The holes were bore into earth to send sun plasma into the center of the earth. With the sun plasma growing inside of earth making it larger earth. With heat from the sun plasma, it started to melt the ice making water. Spaceship drill the holes and pour sun plasma into the center of earth. Good luck with my theory.

That isn't how it filled up! I just moved from Butte last month. It's run off from snow. Smh
Look at me 😆

I second this

Funny, I have a totally different opinion. I opened this video for the story behind the hole in the thumbnail and it wasn't even part of the video.
What an unctuous ass.
That sounded like it was targeted at a certain bearded bald fella 😂

I don't see Lizzo, or Madonna, so this is in no way a comprehensive list.
I can't believe that in this entire video about massive holes there's not one single 'your mom' reference. Appalling.
nervertheless still waiting for your mom :D
I don't think I've ever seen a top 5 on your channel named top 5s. Great videos all the same.
I remember digging that hole, many years ago now! It was so much hotter than expected, although some calculations did actually come close.

There's actually 16 biggest holes on earth . They forgot the hole that lives down the street from me
You ignored the Kennecott Copper Mine in Utah? It is the ONLY manmade structure actually visible from orbit without visual aids.
What about large ranches? What about cities? Those are collectively visible from space right so you can see each one
Great wall of China is visible from space as well

What a holesome video
There is a Lang Cave in Malaysia. It is said to be 130km deep. Shouldn't it be ranked there? Are caves excluded?
Never have the opportunity for a "#1 Yo Mama" been more wasted.
hOPEFULLY 1:50 those noises were made by the massive updraft caused by the heat at the bottom of the hole...but i wouldn't wanna try and find out
Bugger me i thought the cover photo was maddonna's snatch!
No mention of the AR sniper over the pit keeping wildlife off?

In these massive open pit mines, where do all the excess rocks and unused stuff go? that one is over 3000' deep that's a mountain.

Kid at 7:45 was about to show us some stunt man moves
In all my years of being South African I've never been to the Kimberly diamond mine. I should really go one day
Same. I learnt about it a lot at school along with many historic places in our country. They are our treasures so we need to appreciate them
Why aren't the Anaconda mining company who made the Berkely Pit being made to rehabilitate the land?
I think that one at 12.00 looks like the one with the secret missile base underneath that James Bond went to? 😊😁😊😁
0:44 why video of Polish Soldiers when you talking about USSR????
they are called "Canadian Geese" not snow geese... the more you know.
So you mean... Canadian club could Also be called .. snow club?

Why can't we use these endless heat sources for generating electricity
Why when talking about Russia you show Polish soldiers at 0:44?

No grand canyon?
you should include a pic of a map when talking about points of interest
Don't dig too deep .... there be Balrogs down there!!!

That storm drain looks like Moria.
Nice.
You forgot about Lana Rhoades

I’m 76 years old Trust me I’ve seen way bigger holes during my lifetime.
Wonder how far down the comments I'll need to go before I find a "Your mom" joke.
Insert mom joke here

Sinkholes form naturally over thousands of years and the rest were manmade, either on purpose or by accident
What about the gypsum crystal mine?
I was surprised that my ex-wife didn't make the list...
and what about the border chasm in the Czech Republic, it is the deepest in the world
#10, The Kimberly Diamond mine, there was a picture of slaves but no mention of slavery.
My x should've made this list
I'm not sure why Thuy Tran was left off this list
Just imagine how many comments youtube could fit into one of these huge holes 😳
