Just so you know, if watercolour paper is made from 100 % cotton, it will definitely state that on the cover. That's the best selling feature for the manufacturer; along with the weight being 140 lb/300 gsm.
Thanks for reviewing this paper. I was curious because I have some of it and wondered what someone else would think. I take was that it's nice and thick but doesn't seem to have any sizing on it so the paint just sinks right in. It's be great like you said for just practicing brush strokes or doing acrylic work or mixed media.
I already had bought these paints. My granddaughter loves them, because they sparkle! She's 6. So, not a total waste of $5.
Great review. So crazy, I just bought some of this. My only issue is that it doesn't hold up to any abrasion. My kneeded eraser caused quite a bit of breakdown of the surface of the paper... not all over the paper but just in some spots, and that definitely effected how my paint behaved. Thanks for sharing.
Totally wish I would’ve seen this before I bought them 😂 🤷🏻♀️
Kuratake has beautiful golds and a pearl watercolor/gouache 😊
I bought this paper for swatching and color mixing. It’s fine for showing color, but doesn’t have enough sizing for tape, masking, lifting or scrubbing. I donated it to children’s art class. Instead I use Fabriano Studio Fat Pads.
That’s all good to know, I use tape on all my sheets! Thank you for your comment…❤
I happen to love these chameleon colors you should try putting them on black paper it is so satisfying and the colors are vibrant these definitely do need to be on a dark paper not white
I agree. I put a little black acrylic down and paint over that. It’s so mesmerizing. Do you know any dupes for the white/pinky shimmer shade? That’s my fave.
I got this pack and I bought it because of the texture and the feeling of the paper, it seemed like it would hold up pretty well. I think it's better than Canson personally. The only con for me is it can't be pulled out cleanly but really at this price who cares lol. I love the way the texture is, it's awesome. All of your descriptions and thoughts you had about the paper are the same things I thought too.I was going to get the metallic set of watercolors but idk I didn't go for it lol. Thanks for sharing. I have found that some cobalt violets, even high-quality brands, seem gummy. Im not sure if it's bc of the pigment and it needs more gum Arabic or a wetting agent to make it easier to re-wet, but idk just a thought. I have the Paul rubens and think they're fantastic but, a huge trick with metallics is you have to re-wet them a few mins before using them, it makes it much easier to use and you get a better effect with them. Have a great day
Thank you so much for your insight!!! I haven't used my Paul Ruben ones much, I need to play with them some more.
I think the 5 below is great for practicing on. Doesn't allow for super vibrant color. I find when I mix colors, I can really tell on the paper, like see the yellow and red, etc
Gansai Tambi watercolors are great. The metalics are fabulous!!!
Thank you so much for this review - I have been looking for some inexpensive watercolor paper to start water coloring.
I just went to a 5 Below for the first time today and I got a pack of this paper. I actually want to use it for collage and card making.
I love Lisilinka watercolors for the shimmery look!
I thought about buying those Five Below watercolors, I won't waste my money. Thank you for testing them!😊
I bought 2 pads and since I’ve never bought expensive paper, I really like it. But I’ve only been painting for a year and a half!
i have tried many papers that don't state they are 100% cotton and i always end up frustrated as once it starts buckling etc it usually destroys what you are trying to achieve but i do use them for basic practice, especially my brush strokes. Great video, glad i found your page.
Congrats! I am your #300 subscriber! Looking forward to watching more of your videos! I love my Paul Ruben’s metallic shimmer paints! Some are sheer but some are opaque too. I don’t have a Five Below store so won’t try their paper but like knowing comparisons!
Yay!! Thank you for subscribing!! It's funny I happened to look today and it was 299, 5 minutes later it said 300!!
@@opalmint so cool!
Michael’s artist loft iridescent set is amazing.
Metallic watercolors are a different animal. To do them justice, you really need to pre-wet the pan for a few minutes with a good amount of water. They also dried down a bit more opaque than they appear when wet. And usually perform better on black paper.
Gummy is a perfect word for these paints, they don’t mix, and they’re almost all brown. Chameleon means they’re brown regardless of was they look.
I want to get Finetec gold metallic paint. They have other metallic colors too, but that gold, wow!
Interesting range of reviews for the paper. They had both 140# and 300# at my local store; same price, same number of sheets. Of course I got the 300#, and it was surprisingly responsive and easy lifting. I didn't need to scrub, so haven't tried yet. It seemed well sized. Yeah, some buckling, but most watercolor paper will do that if it's not stretched or taped (or dampened both sides). I've been painting in watercolor for decades, and this is one of the better cheap papers. Great for playing, swatching, experimenting, etc. Arches it ain't, but at 5 bucks for 36 sheets, how can you go wrong?
Lol, I just bought the Five Below watercolor paper too. It started pilling quickly and does not handle tape well. It is good for practice though, like you said. Metallic paint recommendation: I have the Sakura Koi Creative Art Colors watercolors, (the pocket field sketch box) and the metallics and pearlescents perform well if you spritz the palette first with water. It’s a fun little box!
I use Coliro, kuretake and csy art gallery metallic paints. Coliro pearlicious metallic are really opaque and are really beautiful and they go over the top of watercolour beautifully, the kuretake can be used like a water colour and a gouache so you can get a more clear looking shine or something a little more opaque depending on how much pigment/ water you use. The CSY art gallery come in these cute little tins and various colour sets. I've used a few as a gouache style over the top of my abstract watercolours and they are very opaque and shiney.✨️
I would definitely wet the pallet on all paints before using them as this seems to be a bit of good advice that I've heard from several other artists and it seems to work a lot better for me than when they are dry.
I like this video, testing unknown products to me, I live in the UK so never heard of Five Below but learning through others experiences is really interesting.
I purchased a FineStroke pad from Five Below last year, it is glue bound and not spiral bound like yours. I enjoy the paper, but wish I had a spiral bound version to use a sketchbook.
I have Paul Reuben too and I love love love them. I have an inexpensive brand...collegiate? And they are great too. Very creamy and full of shimmer. I wouldn't buy these for a kid. The paper I'm going to give a go. Not too bad to,play with
The darker chameleon paints have a reddish brown base I have fiund. Even the expensive great quality Finetec Flip Flop colors. If you swatch them on black paper the color it is "supposed" to be will show and the reddish brown base only when you move the paper to see the shift. Like multichrome eyeshadows! You said you have a makeup channel so I KNOW you know the glorious multichromes I speak of! Even the very good quality ones you see the base more on the white paper and only the other color when you shift the paper. But I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the Finetec ones. There are also ones call IUILE that you can get on Jackson's. And about the gummy thing. Yep. Cheap ones are more gum arabic than pigment (or mica in this case) so that's exactly what that is. Have you ever gotten a really good quality brand's tube paint and the binder separated (maybe cuz the pigment was a cobalt and therefore heavier than normal or whatever)? The first little bit out of the tube will be exactly like that too until you until you stick a toothpick down in there and stir it back up. But there's no help for those cheap ones are just made with more binder than pigment🤣🤣
Makes total sense!!!
I´m thinking in combination could this colorchanging shimmering stuff looking very pretty as highlights or tiny special effekts on other watercolor motives. this could make any colorwork more interessting - for example some tiny drop´s or splashes of it.
I'm just starting out and use the heck out of this paper.
Where I live there is no Five Below but I like Walmart house watercolor. I use it for practice also. Kuratake has a full range of metallics and I really enjoy using them. I am very new to your channel and I'm very excited to walk with you and learn together.
You would see different colors if you paint them on black paper.
It is sold out and does not ship to Canada, bummer!
I just want to know if it is Acid Free.
This is ok paper but I like Bee Paper Company at Walmart. 50 sheets for $10. Beam Paints are AMAZING handmade watercolors. I don’t know how many metallics offered, but I have one in my set of six.
I did not know that Bee paper was at Walmart?! That's awesome! I have used bee paper, I will have to look for it there.
i made a book with this paper and... I dont like it haha. but fun for swatching and playing
You never tell us where to buy it? Is it on Amazon?
It's at a store called Five Below.
I like the paper but I can’t erase anything on it. 🙄 Overall, 7/10.
I couldn’t finish watching the video, it got blurry and I got sick,
I am so sorry. I am new to filming like this. I forgot to turn off the auto focus. It will be fixed in future videos.
I cant believe how poorly those water colors performed! I thought theu would at least be pigmented and be the color they are in the pan. I thought at the most it just wouldn't be really metallic.
HQ finestroke watercolor paper 300 gsm 140lbs is straight trash ,and I think it's hot press this paper was a total waste an U can not get a refund only an Exchange😤 it should be called toilet paper cause that's what ima use it for, what a disappointment. It doesnt even blend with the Watercolors aswell what pike of junk thanks for Reviewing.
