Agree, same here. I'm not a total newbie to gardening, but have only been doing it about 7 years. But nothing prepared me for the last 2 years of gardening disappointments. Last year was pests and using too much nitrogen. This year I cut back on the nitrogen too much and upped the phosphorus and potassium. The last 2 came out good on my soil test but the nitrogen was super low. I was wondering why my plants seemed stunted. The plants are beautiful now since amending based on soil test, but the weather has been 2 weeks no rain, 2 weeks a lot of rain. And the sun has been super intense. Used shade cloth, then it rains and clouds up. I'm learning though. Next rainy spell I will temporarily remove the shade cloth!

Good morning over coffee. My growers soil testing kit just showed up. I purchased two of them so I will only be able to test two of my raised beds. I am learning from all your soil conversations. My dad used to have amazing organic gardens. Too bad I was too young to pay attention.

One more comment though I'd like to repeat from one of your previous podcast: The soil test kit from Growers Solution was easy to use, and definitely informative. I had no idea without it that my nitrogen was low Their analysis was correct, the plants themselves are thriving now. I think the production being low at the moment is most likely the result of constant rain for weeks and then no rain for weeks instead of a soil issue. Highly recommend the Growers Solution soil test kit.

Dirt: my place 10 yrs ago. Old grain fields = dead dirt. 6 yrs cover crops: chop n drop mixed grain, vetch, red clover & alfalfa (cracked the compaction 2-1/2 ft down without till or disc by using a sub soiler). Broadcasted seed just before a rain.

I ordered the Ph meter that you made a video about. I can’t wait to get it. I spent about $150 last year on soil tests for seven raised beds and multiple containers. That was the first test I’ve done on my beds, some of which are more than 10 years old. My nutrients and Ph was pretty close to perfect, because I amend my soil every year with compost, minerals, crushed oyster shells and fertilizers, so I’m not really worried about nutrients, but if my Ph is off, the nutrients won’t be available, and the meter will help me keep it right.

Dead dirt is like the dry bones in Ezekiel’s vision. It can be amended with everything needed for life, but unless He provides the life, it will remain dead. We have been given stewardship of the earth; we are NOT its owners. HE is, and we will each of us, individually, have to give Him an accounting of our stewardship.

Got the GS soil test. Thought I was doing right by adding azomite and 20 20 20, but grew weeds like a jungle. I'm thinking bins will be better for me. It was about 1/2 acre and with everything it needed, would have taken a lot more than the spot treatment I did. Corn grew and Danny corn grew in spite of it being flooded 3 times. Just at very beginning of growth. So out of approx 50 seeds, I have about 12 corn stalks to get seeds from for next year. Thankful for that.

Too much crop land, for too long, has been loaded with NPK and nothing else. I compare it to having a bank account, withdrawing dollars and depositing three cents. Eventually, the bank account will be emptied. IMO, one of the great under appreciated heroes is Professor Doctor George Washington Carver, who almost single handily developed not only the systems of cover crops, but the science of synthetics to make the cover crops profitable. He also taught people how to eat nutritionally from what was available, because nutritional deficiency was a major problem.

So much "fresh" food that is bought in the grocery stores are grown in big farms with chemicals so that when you eat the food -- it is NOT giving our bodies the natural nutrients we need to live --- that is why we have so much sickness (& also our pets & other farm animals). It is difficult today to stay healthy -- unless you can grow your own in your gardens or know where it is grown locally. This also includes the meat & fish that we eat - so much now is from big corporate animal farms & not local -- unless you can grow your own.
SAD what is happening to our food supply. 😢
