Fun Fact: The Teen Titans Robin is canonically Richard Grayson but most people confused him for Tim Drake. Nowadays it's pretty well known that he's Richard such as his flashback sequence, 4⅞ dimensional imp, and the fact that he becomes Nightwing.
@@dc7981 It's funny and strange, cause the reason why they introduced Dick Grayson in Season 4, was so they DON'T confuse him for the one in Teen Titans. It's also weird, cause if TT Robin was from The Batman, why is he so aggressive?! The Batman 2004 is like, the most layed back Batman we ever had (next to '66). This Batman literally the type to crack jokes or actually have a life outside of Batman.
@@baligong3592 I can kinda buy it cause In the later seasons Batman started slowly acting more like the edgy loner he would later become in Batman the new adventures. Batman the animated series was the same way in the first 3 seasons he was more laidback and chill but once season 4 hits he acts more cynical
In fairness, the creators have said they had put a healthy amount of both Tim and Jason into his personality, technically making him a gestalt Robin, so I get the confusion a little
What makes Tim so special is he chose to be Robin. He was a boy who saw Batman was hurting and decided to "save" his hero. When they tried to make Tim more connected to Bruce we got Identity Crisis
@@thetaalchemy1357 I mean you’re right but I think the point still stands. You can pitch the other Robins in a short phrase. For Tim there isn’t a factor that immediately stands out.
@@king_supreme1102that’s exactly why Tim is becoming more irrelevant despite contributing the most to the Robin mantle for 20 years. He isn’t marketable enough. Damian made him redundant and the only solution is to make Tim find a niche that isn’t filled by other characters
Tbh the reason Tim fits the perfect Robin is bc every other main Robin is/at one point has had major a-hole energy. He was Bruce's therapist during the aftermath of Jason's death. A Robin's purpose is to be a light in the dark; one who can keep Batman from going over the edge; one who will keep Batman on his mission.
I like Red Robin personally, especially Tim’s costume with the cowl. As for the whole “not liking the identity because it shows that Tim can’t move on from being Robin”, I respect that opinion. However, I do think it is effective/reasonable when you think about the original continuity and what has happened to Tim to get there. Tim lost his dad when Captain Boomerang killed him and Bruce became that much more of a father figure to him. Not to mention how because of Jason’s death, Tim feels a huge responsibility to be Robin after Nightwing tells him that he doesn’t want to go back as Robin. Then combined with all the years of training and other experiences he had as Robin combined with how obsessive we see Tim get about certain things, it definitely made him feel bitter when Damian took his job. Therefore (at least to me), Red Robin makes sense to me.
I Agree!! In my opinion, like you said, Tim wanted to be Robin since no one else would. He became Robin because he understood who Robin was supposed to be to Batman and he played that role to a t. When he stopped being Robin, he was forced out of it by Dick because Tim’s and equal in Dick’s eyes and Damian needed a mentor more. But Tim will always be robin at heart, that’s why he becomes Red Robin, a grownup sort of ultimate Robin if you will
Exactly that’s why I will always have a soft spot for Red Robin because he represents how much Tim loved being Robin and that he wasn’t ready to give up the mantle yet.
The problem with Tim Drake is he has no conflict with Bruce. He was a near perfect Robin from the start. Dick was the Robin who had to get out from under Batman’s shadow, Jason was the failed Robin who died due to recklessness and Damian is the Robin who needs redemption. Tim was so well-adjusted they even killed his father later on to give him a bit of angst. That’s why he’s seen as the “boring” one.
He had conflicts with Bruce, they were just either minor or they were not given proper development (Red Robin #26). DC had the opportunity to make a significant conflict between them, but they destroyed it along with Tim's character via New 52
i think a lot of the conflict between tim and bruce came more from external factors than external factors. like tim came in when bruce was in the full angst swing of jason’s death and had to fight to even convince bruce to let him become robin, then he was robin during major events like knightfall and (more recently) failsafe and was the main person working to get to the bottom of everything after bruce got “killed” by darkseid. he also probably had the most solo outings as robin outside of team books and stuff compared to the others, he was holding down a popular solo run for a while without even having to leave batman’s side to do so like damian did. he’s the most in tune with bruce so a lot of what they did with him was testing that resolve while letting him do his own thing at times and taking advantage of the fact he was ostensibly a normal kid. he chose to be robin knowing that robin was needed, due to that and his background he had a very different relationship with bruce. most robins are brought in by bruce to help them, but tim brought himself in to help bruce and bc of that his relationship with bruce is a lot more of a partnership than a mentorship. i do think they could have done more work to give them some internal conflicts tho, especially after jason’s resurrection bc that was really an untapped gold mine.
My take: Nobody likes Nightwing. They like Dick Grayson. Let me explain. The most notable thing about Nightwing is that Dick Grayson decided to become his own thing. There’s no notable Nightwing solo stories (to the masses). You couldn’t ask a stranger off the street to name a pure Nightwing villain if their life depended on it (not deathstroke, not a Batman villain, not a Teen Titans villain). People like Dick’s personality. They like his dynamic with the Teen Titans. They like his dynamic with the Bat family. They like his costume. People don’t actually like Nightwing as just Nightwing. The external knowledge of the character supersedes the persona.
i halfway disagree, i think enjoying the character in team stories is the same as enjoying the character. like most ppl who like ironman can’t even name demon in a bottle and have only seen him in avengers stories like civil war. and probably even have a kinda different idea of who the character is in some ways bc of the differences with the MCU version. if they like the name and the suit and his personality then imo they like nightwing, bc dick IS nightwing and he’s nightwing in the stories they like him in. most ppl’s love for superheroes begins from thinking they just look cool anyways, a lotta batman fans know jack shit about him and just like the idea of batman lmao. ig the aspect i disagree with is the delineation of dick and nightwing, bc they’re just one in the same to me. it’s just that most of the media he’s been in that is mainstream is teen titans and batman-related stuff so most ppl who don’t read the comics (AKA most ppl lmao) will only know him from those contexts. i don’t think you need to know notable solo stories of a character to like a character, especially when considering the masses who don’t even really read comics. there’s levels to fandom and liking a character and nightwing has a lotta fans on the lower end of the totem pole bc he’s still pretty niche at the end of the day. but i do wish way more ppl read and knew about the tom taylor run bc that one was great. i agree with a lotta what you’re saying i just think it’s a misdiagnosis of the issue.
@@leeb5112 that’s fair. But I just say they like Grayson. Not anything about the persona. Not like how people like Batman. Or someone who I see him compared to in Daredevil. People show up for Daredevil. With Dick, they aren’t showing up for Nightwing.
My hot take on the Robin situation is that the reason Tim Drake has never veered too far from the Robin identity is because he has no reason to. Tim thrived as Robin, he chose that role, it was not brought upon him by tragedy or unfortunate back story. Dick and Jason both felt, in different ways, stifled in that role so they could only thrive by escaping it. Having Damian come along ruined Tim because with 4 Robins they no longer knew what to do with him that’s why he’s been written so badly since the new 52 and beyond. I think Damian worked as Robin to Dick’s Batman but Tim really is the most compatible Robin for Bruce. Out of all the Robins, I think he is the most similar to Bruce in a lot more ways than the others.
Everyone says "Man, if Damian didn't exist, Tim Drake would be the popular Robin", but I think it's dumb. Damian has reasons to why people like him. You CAN'T confuse a Sword Wielding Robin with the most backhanded comments with someone like Tim. BUT I WILL SAY: Duke Thomas should have Never been created. Why? Because Duke Thomas was literally the upgrade Tim needed. A Superhero by Day, Batman's Right Hand man to take during the day. If Duke Thomas was never created, Tim Drake would have a spot as a Daytime Superhero for Gotham... But because even that position is filled, there's no room for Tim... - The only saving grace is to have Tim Drake team-up with Duke Thomas for some reason.
I think for Tim Drake part of what made him so special is he was the one to realize that Batman is not Batman without Robin, that the Dark Knight NEEDS a Robin to be that lighter half and keep Batman who he is, and I think Tim was the best at that as well. The issue is he doesn’t really have more than that, and him no longer being Robin leaves him with not much else. Tim needs something to make him standout as his own person, Red Robin isn’t in the same league as Nightwing or Red Hood even if he’s the best of the Robins, and he needs something to get him there.
My take on Tim Drake is that he should get a whole rebrand, take on a new identiy that stands out, he shouldn’t keep being Robin, he has to move on from that fully so he can be regarded in the same way that Dick and Jason are, as having moved on from that and became his own thing The whole next Batman thing is that I don’t none of the Robins should take up the cowl. Damian’s arc is about finding his own self away from his parents and not following their footsteps, Dick is already stabilished as Nightwing, Jason has his own morals and anti hero shit going on, Tim just wouldn’t be that interesting as Batman and Stephanie just wouldn’t get the opportunity or want to do it. My pick for a next Batman would be Cassandra Cain, she has the skills, is a great detective, one of (if not the) best fighter in the world and her philosophy on murder and morals matches up the best with Bruce’s
I would like to see a continuity where Tim Drake doesn't leave Batman. I think he should stay with him until the point where Batman pulled the trigger on Batman Beyond and the both of them decide to retire. For Damian Wayne, I think he should become the owner of Wayne Enterprises on Batman Beyond and the only successor of Batman should be Terry.
8:58 Damian would be the best option to be Batman, we seen it stuff like Dceased. Dick doesn't want it and Tim doesn't want it and has shown the pressure and stress might twist him. Even in Damian's darkest future as Batman 666 he is still a hero who ultimately saves everyone and trains Terry to be Batman beyond.
Tim has been completely aimless since the inception of the new 52 with constant narrative blunders that have stumped his character since then. Thankfully Damian has been there to pick up for that slack. So in a way agree, Tim was the best robin, it’s just that it has nearly 20 years since then.
I get what you mean about not needing 4 robins when he would’ve learned his lesson after 2-3 but Damian in the comics actually was Robin because of Dick not Bruce, in batman and son he was pissed that Damian tried to replace Tim as Robin
Damian in the future should embrace both of his destinies. When Bruce retires or dies, Damian takes up Wayne enterprises and becomes Batman AND he follows from Ra’s and Tahlia, leading the league of assassins but completely changing them to be similar to what the Lin Quei starred as in MK1, a global order charged with defending the world, completely swearing off the assassin part of the league’s history. Essentially Gotham’ll still have Batman and the Bat family while the rest of the world will now have a Bat army.
He did do something similar in Batman Beyond comics and reformed the League. Although Damian shouldn't take up Wayne Enterprises. I rather he becomes a doctor, vet or something to do with art.
This maybe a hot take but imo the concept of Batman having another robin after Jason death made no sense because why would he want to put another child in danger after Jason and the red hood fiasco. Imo if Damian Wayne was the 3rd robin it would make sense cause Damian is already a troubled child that grew up killing and with a negative superior mentality cause of Talia and the league of assassins. That is why for the dcu Batman what I would do is dick Grayson is established as nightwing, Jason is “dead” and comes back later as red hood, and Damian is the 3rd robin. Now I know what u guys might say, “so just forget about Tim drake ?” No. What I would do is after Jason death Tim wanted to be robin but Bruce never allowed him to be robin because of what happened to Jason. Instead Bruce allowed him to be robin but in the role of oracle. So essentially Tim is Robin but with the role of oracle where he’s in the batcave monitoring the computer and Inteling Batman on missions. He essentially never became the traditional robin where u fight crime as Batman’s partner. This makes it very easy to understand for the general audience. Dick the first robin, Jason the dead robin, Tim the honorary robin, damian the current robin. And the batfamily keep it very simple for the dcu Batman, nightwing, red hood, catwoman, batgirl, and robin Damian Wayne. With Alfred, Tim, and Lucias fox as the honorary bat family members. And if u really want to tim to be robin well u could always have him suit up later as Red Robin because by that time the general audience would have already gotten to know him
Well, Batman was able to get through Jason's death and move on thanks to Tim. Initially, he didn't want anyone else to be Robin, but Dick and Alfred convinced him to give Tim a chance. The fact that one of the main reasons Jason became Robin was because it was hard and lonely for Bruce to defend Gotham without Robin also carries weight. Without Alfred and Dick i doubt Bruce would've let him become Robin.
@@fdjtron1732 true but my main point is for the dcu for the sake of the general audience it’s much more simple to just do dick Grayson the first robin, Jason Todd the dead robin, and Damian the current robin. While Tom drake more so became oracle in this universe but he’s not called oracle he’s called robin.
@@hungryalmighty7156 as for me, Tim can be represented in the film through a cameo from which the audience learns that: 1. He's CEO of Bruce's company. And uses Bruce's company and his money to make Gotham a better place. 2. He was Robin before Damian. 3. He has a good relationship with Bruce, Dick and in general with everyone except Damian. In the future, he and his conflict with Damian can be given more time in Teen Titans movie. This way the audience will understand everything and the movie will be closer to the source material. In addition, the idea of using Bruce's money and company directly to improve Gotham and the lives of ordinary citizens has not yet appeared in the movie's. Tim was doing exactly that after he stopped being Robin.
Red Hood is my pick for the next Batman the character develpment we could see from him would be amazing to explore in a movie about redemption and becoming more then a victim of his trama from the joker which could be a very powerful message for many people these days
A very recent version of Robin most people forget about is Robin John Blake from The Dark Knight Rises movie. Also, if you look back in the silver age of DC comics there is Bruce Wayne Jr.
When it comes to Dick being so different than Bruce once he grows up, it can be summed up by Bruce's conversation with Diana when she accused him of taking on a child so he'd become just like him, and Bruce replied that he did it so Dick wouldn't end up like him... mission accomplished.
I want to see an adaptation where Jason Todd is taken in by Bruce while Dick is still Robin or just in his early days as Robin. Reason why, it would be interesting to explore the characters' relationship before all that traumatic stuff goes down. Mabye , Dick and Jason alternate as Robin sometimes. I don't know, I just think it would be an interesting direction to take with Jason.
Did you know that Anarky was supposed to be the third robin after Jason died? The only reason it didn't happen is because Marv Wolfman already created Tim drake to replace Jason, so Lonnie never became a robin. I'm interested to see how that would've effected Bruce Wayne having a robin that is staunchly opposed to him hoarding wealth, privatizing the means of production, victimizing people who are forced to turn to crime because of socio-economic circumstances they have no say in, and fighting to uphold oppressive institutions of authority that take power from the people and give it to liars, opportunists and supremacists.
It would have been a really interesting dynamic and just a really interesting vibe for DC in general. Anarky barely gets any recognition today so it's unfortunate for the character.
I'm pretty sure he literally donates every penny not spent on being Batman or ensuring Alfred and the Bat Family don't go hungry... and tries to use his influence as Bruce Wayne to promote good people like Harvey Dent pre-Two Face, and good policies. But he can only do so much, as Bruce or Batman... honestly, I really don't think Anarky would have a problem with Bruce. Depends a bit on the version because he has sometimes ignored what he can do as Bruce and such... But at worst he'd just learn to do what he already does in other versions, again lol. But Anarky would be just as trash as Jason or Damian. I'd probably vote for him to be killed, too, if I was alive for the vote for Jason and they did another for Lonnie.
I dunno if it’s just the stories I’ve read or the shows I’ve watched but he really doesn’t go after those who are forced to crime because of socio-economic circumstances. He goes after mob bosses, psychopaths, serial killers, and assassins. If they are a member of a gang and attack him he does attack back.
Next to zero people Batman has ever gone up against were "forced to turn to crime" and the ones who do he generally helps get back on track. And sadly I have to ask, what means of production does Batman hoard? Ir is that general anti-capitalism rhetoric that you're applying needlesly to a fictional character it nary applies to
@@LedZedd "Next to zero people Batman has ever gone up against were "forced to turn to crime" and the ones who do he generally helps get back on track." Uh oh, Mister Freeze is at the door and he's pissed. Not to mention that every bank robber, purse snatcher, drug dealer, thief are all examples of people that turn to crime because of desperation, all of which batman has gone up against. They have no choice but to do these things because capitalism restricts a person's ability to obtain the resources they need to survive. And batman has never gotten those people on the right track because he refuses to help them. He doesn't challenge any of the institutions of authority that force people to live in this kind of society. "And sadly I have to ask, what means of production does Batman hoard?" Do you even know what the means of production are? The means of production are everything that is used to produce goods and services, whether that be land or factories. You are aware that Wayne literally ha s a billion dollar industry with his name right on the front that produces all of his equipment, right? And he doesn't make that equipment himself, his employees do. that's the only way they're able to use those means to produce anything is if they sell their labor to him, because those means of production are owned by Wayne and not the workers that actually use them.
I think Tim should be the true successor of Batman. He is a better detective that Batman himself. Tim being Batman would make the most sense imo because he has the skills and even the relationships with other characters that could be beneficial to him as the Batman.
@@abiodunsulaiman2297 there's only one such iteration - Titans Tomorrow, and he became evil because of circumstances not because of the mantle itself. Also, he had already broken his promise of not becoming Batman shortly before Damian became Robin and after becoming Red Robin he was becoming more and more like Batman everyday, he knew that and he was okay with it.
Hot take for hot take: I don't like the idea of a biological son inheriting the mantle, we already see bloodline stuff in anime. I'd much prefer the DCAU of Batman beyond of Terry taking the suit and becoming batman (I know he's technically a son because of Waller, but I'll accept this since it wasn't Bruce's design to make a clone of himself and it just sort of happened) I find it more interesting to not have someone related to the mentor to take over. I'll even take that elseworld batman being one of Lucius's sons that found a suit and took on the mantle Besides I don't see Damian taking on his father's no kill rule, and like it or not, Batman's successor should at least respect the foundations of the suit. So while it makes sense- I don't like Damian as Batman, especially when we see he continues to kill as Batman.
I love Damian Wayne as Robin and that he actually thinks like Batman. Batman and the Leauge of Assassin’s both have the same end goal but have different ways of going about it. Having a Robin that was brought up like Bruce, trained like him but from a younger age, and could potentially be better skill wise than Batman is really cool. Not only that but having a Robin that actually wants to be Batman and is actively striving towards being better than his father is so refreshing and a story of progression for a Robin that is natural and really only explored in elseworlds stories. Only downside is that Tim Drake is my favorite Robin and Damian kinda kicked him out… but it just goes to show two legends cant coexist 🐐🐐
Also have to add that Jason Todd is a boring character and Under the Red Hood is his only claim to fame. Don’t get me wrong, that’s one of my personal favorite Batman stories but outside of that he hasn’t had any good runs. The outlaws I think is decent but doesn’t sell very well and I think after that story ended he should have stayed a true anti-hero, punisher style. But no they make him non-lethal and that just lead to (imo) a boring version of the character, and on top of that the comic writers just constantly flip-flop between the bat-family liking him or not
I love that you’re opinion is basically my own except that my reasoning for not wanting any other Robins is basically that it’s getting harder for them to stand out. Dick was the first and became Nightwing (and still is to this day). Jason was already rough around the edges, died & came back to life, and became Red Hood (and still is). Tim is typically regarded as the smartest Robin and has his Red Robin persona (as lazy as that is). And then there’s Damian, Bruce’s son and the grandson of Ra’s al Ghul. There’s a reason that when you hear the name “Robin,” you typically think of one of them. Sure there have been others like Carrie and Stephanie, but like you said, people often forget they were Robin. It’s not necessarily that they were bad characters, just that they didn’t have much to stand out and everyone knew they wouldn’t be Robin forever.
I'll toss a quick take in here that I didn't see in the comments: Robin being a sort of temporary role is both good and bad. For the negatives: - Robin is often seen as 'Batman junior' and too childish for live action adaptations, which is unfortunate. - You end up with a lot of Robins and have to find ways to differentiate them so they aren't completely forgotten, and there's only so many before you start to question how old Batman is getting if he keeps raising more Robins until they fly the nest. - The constant dilemma of whether a Robin is supposed to create their own identity, or if they are supposed to take up the mantle of Batman. They've done a bit of both due to various storylines, but it's definitely complicated. I think I lean towards the former, it works better for them to have their own identities and they shouldn't have to leave that behind to take up the mantle if Batman is unable to. That's what the Batman Beyond storyline is for anyway. - As a follow-up to last one, if Batman is no more, then is there no more Robins? Or do Nightwing and the other former Robins take on their own Robins, continuing a cycle of orphans adopting orphans to create a found family and protecting kids that are getting into vigilantism and/or seeking revenge? For the positives: - Batman adopting kids so they don't have to go through what he did is great for all characters involved and makes sense, and typically it is the choice of the kid to want to join in the crime fighting. - Having the character grow into their own is great development to see in a story, and if done well you have each branch out in their own way and be memorable. Personally I think the positives outweigh the negatives even though I have less written, but it's definitely an interesting concept that people are split on.
15:43 i can’t talk about this without talking about how much dick has taught bruce the reason dick is my favourite robins is because, yes, bruce took an orphan child that has watched his parents die to give him a home and someone yo grow up with but that orphan took bruce in his life too dick tethered bruce to humanity, gave him new reasons to fight i really love one story from the ‘one bad day’ run, which is the mr freeze one. Is a super cute story in which dick is still a child and is set on helping freeze’s wife and bruce is super supportive of his son and helps him throughout the story
8:15 You're absolutely right. Tim needs to move on. He needs a new name that will confirm that he is now a real man. You know, not just a man, but even "The Man". Seriously, I find it very funny that the image of Batman jokingly deprived of his ears is literally a design of Red Robin.
My favorite Robin in general and as characters is Tim Drake. People may say he is boring but he is literally the only Robin (Main Robin and their original stories) who figured out that Batman is Bruce. He actually has Batman’s Detective skills and could easily become the next Batman if he wanted to, he just needs that shine in the spotlight. Even better than Damien, Damien is way too volatile and childish and isn’t really changing all too much ever since his introduction. Tim deserves it way more than Damien, Batman isn’t a royal title that needs an heir, Tim suits the role the best. Tim just needs a crazy good Detective Story that holds a lot of weight to the Bat-family. I don’t know exactly how that would play out, but he needs to have that strength shown more and more often.
I think Batman should fail in his "redemption" of Damien, and that's what leads Bruce down the path to becoming Old Bruce in Batman Beyond. Bruce pours everything into trying to redeem Damien, even at the cost of his relationship with Tim and the others. He spends so much of his energy trying to make Damien a good person, and he fails, and that causes him to become more shut off. He goes fully solo, eventually retires, and we get Damien as the head of the League of Assassins.
I have seen the light and tasted the golden fruit of knowledge. Tim Drake’s identity shouldn’t be Drake or Red Robin or any of those dumbass names. He should be the Gray Ghost as a detective-oriented hero
Tim makes for the best heir to the Bat. Dick has very much grown into his own, Jason has too much baggage and became his own man free of the Bat, and Damian is going to be the heir to the Demon. That leaves Tim, who is the superior detective to Bruce and is much less damaged as a human being. And when partnered with a Stephanie who has mastered her (mostly downplayed) link to the spirit of Gotham, the city will have its protectors for another generation.
I think the batfam should only include only adoptive family members, just like how Alfred basically is Bruce's adoptive father. Damian to me is a Cassandra Cain try hards and not nearly as good, but he gets to stick around just because he is Bruce's biological son, no matter how annoying he is. Cass should be the next batman
What makes Tim special is that one he figured out batman and nightwing identities but also he brought Bruce back after Jason’s death also also when everyone thought Bruce was dead he found out he was alive also also also he’s the only one that Bruce actually adopted making him Tim drake-Wayne he’s the best Robin. Also don’t agree with the Red Robin slander sure the name is whatever but the suit is dope mainly tho the character and the run was amazing and real proved that Tim is different from the other robins in a good way.
I don't have enough knowledge about the Robins, and I would totally fall in the category of which one's which.... Dick/Nightwing and Tim are about the only 2 I know, but I couldn't tell you within any certainty which storyline they fall in, or what's their timeline. I think that's why I'm partial to Nightwing. He's different enough and that's what makes it easier for me :) And for whatever reason, I only think of Jason as Red Hood, that's also part of my problem I guess 😆
I feel like Batman should at least consider Jason's words from under the red hood a bit more. Crime can't be stopped, only controlled. What to do with the criminals that aren't ruled by bataman's fear tactics? And probably most important of all: why not JUST kill Joker? Why would batman never be able to come back from that dark place?
My favorite Robin is Tim. He’s the embodiment of Robin. I also just have a soft spot for any of the brainy ones. But he has no role outside of Robin. Fun banter? Nightwing Strong personal connection? Jason Tech support? Oracle Like what does Tim have? If Damien is Robin then what the hell is Tim gonna do?
I think that by the time you introduce a fourth Robin and fifth and so on that the newer ones don’t get partnered up with Bruce. We saw this with the Dick Grayson Batman and Damien Wayne Robin. The reason I feel this way is because Bruce can’t possibly be in his prime anymore at that point so you’d have to have him play a role like he did in Batman Beyond to the newer Batmen, Batgirls and Robins and eventually yes Bruce dies from complications or in Battle. DC is gonna keep Bruce and his peers ambiguously in their 30s forever so what’s the point of constantly introducing new heroes is that won’t be allowed to grow. Look at that kid Damien worked with who could pump up like Bane. Where is he now? That’s just one of too many examples for Batman and Supes in general.
Damian is my favorite Robin. Full stop, hands down. But my issue with Damian and Tim and the robin debacle is the fact Damian doesn't really work as Bruce's Robin he works best as Dick's. Bruce is notoriously bad with his kids, he does care about them all but he is really bad at showing it. Bruce is aloof and critical as well as hands off and hands on simultaneously. Dick's approach is softer, he's patient, less judgemental and openly caring. Which is what Damian needs patience and trust and which something Bruce doesn't really give him. The writers rushed, escalating Tim from Robin to a slot they didn't even have finished. Unlike the other two(three) who grew out of it Tim wasn't given the chance, prematurely promoted from Robin leading to Red Robin which is in itself a whole thing and leaving Batman with a Robin who he doesn't know how handle especially one as volatile as Damian was at the time. It was a cool idea but it was executed poorly.
If this were based in Reality with all five Robins (im not counting Carrie Kelly cause that's a frank Miller-verse) Bruce Wayne would be between 45-50 years old. Dick Grayson is the Iconic Real world Pop Culture Robin. Jason Todd was created just to HAVE a Robin, and he didn't really have a purpose, until Death Gave him one . Tim Drake was tactically The most practical and efficient Robin and the most well adjusted. Stephanie Brown, by having her character essentially create the War Games story arc because of her mistake, she probably has been blocked out of a lot of Fans minds. And Damian, you gotta love him cause all he wants to do is be like his DAD.
Hot take: Batman and Robin aren't the dynamic duo we think of, they haven't been a duo for a long time. T.M.M at the end video you talked about how at some point Batman should stop having Robins and be a solo crimefighter again, but I'd say he is already there. If the stars aren't properly alligned or if there isn't a Batman and Robin comic at the moment then the chances to see Robin in a major rolie in the Batman books is slim. It's more likely to see Robin in a Young Justice, Teen Titans or even his own comic.
The only reason people want Damien to be Batman is because he's good at fighting but that's it. Theres more to being batman then just throwing hands, hed probably be just as bad as Frank Millers crazy steve version of Batman
@@dc7981 No. Damian is not even the best fighter of the Robins. And we see he grows up to be a pretty good Batman like in Dceased. Even his most darkest version is still a hero.
@@huntertezz He is the best fighter; or at least, once he realizes his full potential like the others he will be. Damian is the son of Bruce & Talia, genetically augmented in the womb & raised from birth in the League Of Assassins. Even in his immature state he still occasionally gives the other Robins a run for their money; when he fully develops he will be the best Robin in terms of both physical & mental capabilities. The problem with Damian was never anything related to skill, in terms of pure ability he overshadows the other Robins (this was arguably the point of his character); the problem is that the content of his personality doesn't align with what it means to be a Robin. This has always been the problem. He's much more of a Devil-spawn than a Golden Boy.
@@Nykandros No that was never the point of the character and his personality is not meant to align with what a Robin is. Did you forget, he is written to be Dick's partner. They are meant to be a reverse of the classic dynamic duo. Dick is lighter and optimistic Batman while Damian is the darker Robin. He never once gave the Robins the run for their money. Although I agree once is older he will surpass the other batkids aside from Batgirl (Cass will always be top). In terms of pure ability he never overshadowed the Robins.
I really wish I had gotten in on the post, or even when this video first dropped half an hour ago, but here’s what I got: Now your take about keeping Tim as Robin and just not bringing Damian into it isn’t without merit. I can respect it. But going off of things how they are now, I kind of felt Damian kind of already out grew the name already, despite still using it. And if Tim keeps it, maybe that could be his thing, he’s the most devoted to the role. That he’s adamant in his conviction that Batman needs a Robin. Which in turn could highlight a deliberate character of flaw of how he just can’t let go of it. Anyway, with his whole Prince of Crows thing Damian’s writing, I think calling himself Corvin has something for everyone. Still bird related, still reminiscent of calling himself Robin, but it’s less derivative than Red Robin, matches his new gray and black suit and overall more dark and aggressive attitude. All you would really need to change is the R patch. Either remove it or make it, say, a red bird silhouette, similar but not identical to Nightwing’s. If you wanted to go the extra mile, instead of yellow, the underside of the cape could be khaki, alluding to his future batsuit. And the whole idea is that he decides he wants to find a balance between the ideals of the batfam and the league of assassins, and that the best way to do that is leave the title of Robin behind him. And, you know, for symmetry he would probably have those who serve him in the league stop calling him things like Hafid al Ghul and Ibn al Xu’ffasch and instead Lord Damian, or even Lord Corvin or Prince of Crows. Or whatever any of them would be in arabic. Also, I think this idea could work if you did want to have Dick, Jason and Tim be the only Robins but did want to introduce Damian some way. Y’know, maybe we retell his early days, he’s introduced to Batman and subsequently Tim as Robin, and he has the whole thing about how he’s the real son and Tim is a pretender. You could do the whole thing of him making his own Robin costume and kill while wearing it, but I feel like that’s more optional. Either way, he make the case that Corvin, not Robin, is the true heir to the Bat mantle
Is he? I know he's in a teen titans comic where he and Tim meet and he's sporting the same UTRH attire but I'm not sure he's in the comic to the extent I talked about. I guess it'd help to read up on it again. I didn't see him listed as a character in the DC database
@@Conk_Creet in utrh he rips apart his red hood outfit and reveals a robin suit under, then he beats tim drakes ass and talks about how he (jason) was replaced and stuff
I remember a time when Tim pretty much was the most popular Robin, but I would argue in recent years DC just doesn’t really know what to do with him, and I would say more casuals being introduced to Jason exploded his popularity, I mean Jason is more popular than he’s ever been bc DC has had a history of straight up skipping Jason in anything that isn’t a comic, that’s changed and also as much as I don’t like him personally Damien is probably considered more interesting than Tim, so to some it up i think Dick is probably the most popular if we’re talking everyone not just comic readers bc he’s the original, Jason is probably second most popular although I’d say most ppl are a fan of the under the red hood type of Jason not necessarily the current comic Jason, then with Damien it seems like you either love him or hate him just from what I’ve seen, and Tim has just kinda faded from the spotlight over the years and not to open a can of worms, but making Tim gay in current comics when a big draw to the character was his relationship with Stephanie Brown I think was a mistake and it sucks bc Tim was very popular at one point and he could be again if DC gave Tim a clear place and direction sorry for the novel
I don’t think any of the robins should take up the Batman mask. Now I’m not saying that Batman should be doing it forever because I don’t think he should. He’s going to die eventually so he shouldn’t be Batman forever. Don’t think it should be any of the four robins. Dick and Jason for obvious reasons because they are already their own superhero. Damien is too violent and it’s more likely to become an assassin and not the next Batman. Tim shouldn’t be the next Batman because even though he’s the smartest out of the four of them he has issues. When he eventually becomes his own hero he still robin. He can’t think from himself and he’s never really his own man. They just need to fix his character. I think Terry should be the next Batman. Now I know that’s technically in a different universe, but still think that fits better than any of the other robins being Batman.
Let’s face it Tim Dake is the most likely Robin to cut in brave the bold, because he’s not really really needed. Unlike how dick Grayson is Batman’s greatest success and Jason Tide is Battling greatest failure. Only you also have the red Robin fast food chain, not like how they name is being used for a child vigilante.
People don't like Tim because hes the Donitello of the Robins the only thing that makes him stand out is his intelligants but hes not anything that special outside of that he isn't the golden boy like Dick nor is he the rebel like Jason and isn't the blood son like Damian
Tim Drake is my favorite comic character ever. I'm not a fan with how he is handled in current comics. Tim being bisexual COULD have worked, but the way it was and still is handled is awful. They only did it to try and pander and pull an lgbt audience. He was still dating Stephanie when Batman: Urban Legends made him bisexual and him asked out on a date. His relationship was then stated to be broken up off panel. He's entire personality is being altered to adapt to this change, and it also doesn't help that bisexual characters in a lot of media aren't aloud to date the opposite sex in a lot of people's eyes, which means him and Steph probably won't be getting back together anytime soon, which is a shame, because they are perfect together. What makes Tim stand out from the others was that he wasn't defined by some tragedy. He wasn't orphaned, living on the streets, or raised in extreme conditions to be an assassin that would cost him his childhood. He was a normal, albeit incredibly intelligent child who chose to be Robin, and stepped up himself, rather than the mantle being put on him like the others.
Every elseworld story with Damien as batman hes a psycho murderer. I personally would rather Batgirl or terry become batman. Nightwing should take the position and responsibilities of Batman without putting on the suit
No not really. You probably haven't read much since we have seen several elseworlds like Dceased, Generation Lost, The Just, Trinity, Future State. If you are talking about Batman 666, he is Damian's darkest future and even he is still a hero who ultimately saves Gotham and trains Terry to be Batman Beyon.d
I think you should do verses series like putting two DC characters against each other who would win. Or if you wanna be derring do a DC character vs Marvel character and make it a series. Just a fun idea
While I've grown to tolerate Damian, I'll always see Tim as Robin. I also would've like Tim to still be dating Stephane. I have nothing against heterosexuals, TimSteph is just my favorite DC couple after WonderBird from YJ (Tim Drake x Cassie Sandsmark).
Damian Wayne's existence as a Robin is a mistake. If they intended on this character existing then he should have been brought in as someone other than a Robin. It diminishes the significance of the role. There have been more people to take up the role of Robin than have taken up the role as Batman. Jace Fox, Dick Grayson, and Azrael have been Batman. Yet, Dick Grayson, Jason Todd, Tim Drake, and Damian Wayne have been Robins. Stephanie Brown and Carrie Kelly have been Robins, though one is an Elseworlds story and Stephanie Brown has never escaped female Robin as a gimmick, she would have been better suited as a Batgirl. It's not that I think Bruce should eventually stop bringing up troubled youths and teaching them, I just think we are diminishing characters by passing the mantles around. If we had four men and two women that had been Batman it would not be looked upon favorably. That we have had three different people take the mantle up for short times has been met with controversy and distaste by some people. Tim Should be the final Robin. Dick left the role, Jason died, Tim took it upon himself. Tim didn't willingly give up the role nor did he die. He was replaced while still a Robin. The mantle should be his. To make Damian a Robin is lazy writing.
I may have to come back and edit this to add more but I gotta point out 2 inaccuracies from the comments you displayed so far. 1) Tim isn't even Robin in half the stuff I watch. As not much of a comic fan, I don't think I read No Man's Land (but I might've watched the Comicstorian Complete Story on it once, and then promptly forgotten everything about it since I barely retain info like that), or the other stories mentioned. So he was in 30 years of comics? So what? DCAU, Teen Titans, DCAMU, Young Justice. It's all Dick. 2) Cluemaster won't even get NAMED by most people if you ask them to name 10 Batman villains. I don't really want to be super rude to whoever called them "the most iconic Batman villain" but dude... I feel like saying they're on crack would be an insult to people on crack. Iconic means they're a household name. Means non-fans might be able to name them. Joker, Harley Quinn, Bane, Mister Freeze, Poison Ivy, Catwoman... even Ra's Al Ghul has more of a chance of being named by a non-fan. Hell, Man-Bat because if they watched the SPIDER-MAN cartoon in the 90s, they're probably familiar with the Man-Spider and could be like, "I bet they did that for Batman, too." RIDDLER. The popular Cluemaster. The one people can ACTUALLY NAME. Jim Carrey! Like, I'm sorry. Maybe Cluemaster is cool. Maybe YOUR favorite villain. Maybe even most underrated. But far from "the most ICONIC." Literally the opposite. Which makes me wonder if the comment was sarcasm. But there was no indication of that, so I have to assume it wasn't.
Here's an unpopular one, based off the fact no one cares, Matt McGinnis becoming Robin Beyond makes no sense and should not be attempted again. Batman Beyond doesn't need and shouldn't have a Robin Beyond.
Damian should've never been created bruce's son being another kid who lost his parents is way more impactful and just a cooler idea, the only biological son of bruce wayne should be terry mcginnis
Nah Terry being Bruce's biological son is a bad retcon, ruins what makes Terry unique and undermines Warren by making him the fake dad. Being "another kid who lost his parents" stopped being impactful and unique long time ago when three Robins had that origin. Damian is just far more unqiue especially since he is Dick's Robin instead of Bruce's.
I don’t get where this false victim hood narrative coming from Tim Fans. Maybe post Gunn your boy will in trouble but right now a lot of writers and editors are biased in his favor in the comic division. Tim messes with other young bat fam characters like Damian & Duke more then they negatively impact him.
Yeah remember that whole "Step aside, Damian-the world's favorite Robin has got this! " and then in main Batman book had the writer mentioning why Tim is a better partner than Dick and Jason.
The problem is that Tim has outgrown Robin completely and there was set a course for his further development in Red Robin series, but DC rejected this course and destroyed his character completely. And now, instead of correcting these mistakes, they are making new ones. At this point, Pre-New 52 Tim Drake and his current version are two completely different characters.
I always see the conversation of who should take up the mantle of batman. But my question is, why does that need to happen? Why can't everyone just be who the are and the mantle be left alone?
he chose red robin because kingdom come dick grayson became red robin because batman died so he chose it as a reminder that he was the failure of a robin
Fun Fact: The Teen Titans Robin is canonically Richard Grayson but most people confused him for Tim Drake. Nowadays it's pretty well known that he's Richard such as his flashback sequence, 4⅞ dimensional imp, and the fact that he becomes Nightwing.
People also thought it was connected to the 00s Batman show for both having a similar anime inspired artstyle
@@dc7981
It's funny and strange, cause the reason why they introduced Dick Grayson in Season 4, was so they DON'T confuse him for the one in Teen Titans.
It's also weird, cause if TT Robin was from The Batman, why is he so aggressive?! The Batman 2004 is like, the most layed back Batman we ever had (next to '66). This Batman literally the type to crack jokes or actually have a life outside of Batman.
@@baligong3592 Daddy issues I guess. Idk. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Doesn’t stand out in the same way as the others.
“Prodigal son” “dead Robin” “son of the bat”………. “Dude who wanted to be robin” ?
@@king_supreme1102 the better man "nightwing", the failure or sin of hubris "red hood" the mental robin "red robin" tim the blood robin damain
Don't remind me of Identity Crisis.
That’s why he’s seen as the “boring” one.
.... so basically Tim is the only one without daddy issues
So that's why they made Tim Drake gay.
My take on Tim Drake is that he should get a whole rebrand, take on a new identiy that stands out, he shouldn’t keep being Robin, he has to move on from that fully so he can be regarded in the same way that Dick and Jason are, as having moved on from that and became his own thing
The whole next Batman thing is that I don’t none of the Robins should take up the cowl.
Damian Wayne will return to the League of Assassins following the wishes of his grandfather Ras Al Ghul.
The robins do look a little too alike which is why Jason getting the gray streak after returning and Damian having a darker skin tone
@@hungryalmighty7156 as for me, Tim can be represented in the film through a cameo from which the audience learns that:
Ir is that general anti-capitalism rhetoric that you're applying needlesly to a fictional character it nary applies to
@@LedZedd "Next to zero people Batman has ever gone up against were "forced to turn to crime" and the ones who do he generally helps get back on track."
Uh oh, Mister Freeze is at the door and he's pissed.
"And sadly I have to ask, what means of production does Batman hoard?"
Do you even know what the means of production are? The means of production are everything that is used to produce goods and services, whether that be land or factories. You are aware that Wayne literally ha s a billion dollar industry with his name right on the front that produces all of his equipment, right? And he doesn't make that equipment himself, his employees do. that's the only way they're able to use those means to produce anything is if they sell their labor to him, because those means of production are owned by Wayne and not the workers that actually use them.
Red Robin looks like the Space Ghost. Basically Batman without the ears.
I think Tim should be the true successor of Batman. He is a better detective that Batman himself. Tim being Batman would make the most sense imo because he has the skills and even the relationships with other characters that could be beneficial to him as the Batman.
Every single iteration of tim as batman has him become a psychotic gun toting maniac and he has stayed multiple times he never wants to be batman.
I'd much prefer the DCAU of Batman beyond of Terry taking the suit and becoming batman (I know he's technically a son because of Waller, but I'll accept this since it wasn't Bruce's design to make a clone of himself and it just sort of happened)
I find it more interesting to not have someone related to the mentor to take over. I'll even take that elseworld batman being one of Lucius's sons that found a suit and took on the mantle
Besides I don't see Damian taking on his father's no kill rule, and like it or not, Batman's successor should at least respect the foundations of the suit. So while it makes sense- I don't like Damian as Batman, especially when we see he continues to kill as Batman.
I really enjoyed them making Damian Batman in the dceased universe
So I personally think Damain should've took the Identity of Red X , it could've been a way to bring red X in the fold in a cool ish way
Naw give Red X to Tim Drake.
@@ShawnLuster Tim Drake will always be the Grey Ghost to me
#JusticeForTimDrake!
Stephanie brown is my personal favourite Robin and I wish she got more adaptation
But, yes Steph definitely was only made Robin as an "sorry for what is about to happen" to her fans. Which is a shame.
But no they make him non-lethal and that just lead to (imo) a boring version of the character, and on top of that the comic writers just constantly flip-flop between the bat-family liking him or not
Damien Wayne is my favorite character as robin
Can we agree that Tim has too good of hair to have it under that weird-looking cowl with no ears?
You should do Batgirl next
Great vid TMM!! I didnt evem know that there were so many robins lol!!
Thanks for using my comment on Steph! Really appreciate it and enjoy watching your videos!
Also, pretty good job in pronouncing my name!
Thanks for commenting! And it could be my Italian heritage coming out 😂
I'll toss a quick take in here that I didn't see in the comments:
Robin being a sort of temporary role is both good and bad.
For the negatives:
- Robin is often seen as 'Batman junior' and too childish for live action adaptations, which is unfortunate.
For the positives:
- Batman adopting kids so they don't have to go through what he did is great for all characters involved and makes sense, and typically it is the choice of the kid to want to join in the crime fighting.
- Having the character grow into their own is great development to see in a story, and if done well you have each branch out in their own way and be memorable.
Personally I think the positives outweigh the negatives even though I have less written, but it's definitely an interesting concept that people are split on.
Hey thanks for using my comment! Haven't finished yet but I already know its a banger.
Thanks man! Hope you enjoyed the rest of the video!
Great vid dawg
Thanks brother!
15:43 i can’t talk about this without talking about how much dick has taught bruce
the reason dick is my favourite robins is because, yes, bruce took an orphan child that has watched his parents die to give him a home and someone yo grow up with
but that orphan took bruce in his life too
dick tethered bruce to humanity, gave him new reasons to fight
i really love one story from the ‘one bad day’ run, which is the mr freeze one.
Multiple people said Tim Drake doesn't have a unique trait, but isn't his whole thing being able to be a detective as good as batman?
7:51 He had alive parents that could have had a better dynamic with him but they decided to make him bruce wayne jr.
You should do Captain Atom next. Super underrated character.
I hate that they try to make Tim relevant by trying to make him bisexual and it backfires on them
I have seen the light and tasted the golden fruit of knowledge. Tim Drake’s identity shouldn’t be Drake or Red Robin or any of those dumbass names. He should be the Gray Ghost as a detective-oriented hero
Do the Batgirls
Tim makes for the best heir to the Bat. Dick has very much grown into his own, Jason has too much baggage and became his own man free of the Bat, and Damian is going to be the heir to the Demon. That leaves Tim, who is the superior detective to Bruce and is much less damaged as a human being. And when partnered with a Stephanie who has mastered her (mostly downplayed) link to the spirit of Gotham, the city will have its protectors for another generation.
Tim WAS the only Robin with a parent
Damian💀
Tim should take the Cluemaster name team up with spoiler and take over detective comics.
4:24 Tim may be underrated, but Steph is forgotten and ignored, by writers, some fans and characters. I'm pretty sure she is more underrated.
My favorite Robin is Tim. He’s the embodiment of Robin. I also just have a soft spot for any of the brainy ones. But he has no role outside of Robin.
Fun banter? Nightwing
Strong personal connection? Jason
Tech support? Oracle
Like what does Tim have?
What not no Jarro shout out? My disappointment is immeasurable lol
Tim Drake is the favorite 'robin' but Jason Todd is my favorite bat family member
Even tho you hate Damian, it's nice to see that you also agree that he'd be a good choice for Batman
@@dc7981this reads like you haven’t read a comic featuring Damian Wayne in the last 10 years. He’s loved by active readers

I wish Damian got a new codename or something like the ronin. I feel like he grown out of the robin rolly
I love to see fellow Tim Drake enjoyers.
So many people shit on him
I really wish I had gotten in on the post, or even when this video first dropped half an hour ago, but here’s what I got:
Now your take about keeping Tim as Robin and just not bringing Damian into it isn’t without merit.
Man that ended up longer than expected.
My hot take? Damian is my favorite robin of all time and I think Dick should be batman permanently.
man i wish someone would talk about Matt McGinnis, i know he only showed up as Robin for one or two issiues but come onnn
13:35 he's literally in the UTRH comic
Is he? I know he's in a teen titans comic where he and Tim meet and he's sporting the same UTRH attire but I'm not sure he's in the comic to the extent I talked about. I guess it'd help to read up on it again. I didn't see him listed as a character in the DC database

I assume supergirl might be next for your unpopular opinions and hot takes as she is a very underated character in the superman mythos
Give Tim Drake cool superpower.
Damian and Duke already got powers so wouldn't make him more unique.
unpopular opinions batman beyond would go hard
👀
I think Terry is many people's next man up.
First comment got a pretty good point
I think you should do verses series like putting two DC characters against each other who would win. Or if you wanna be derring do a DC character vs Marvel character and make it a series. Just a fun idea
Ya I could do that!
Tim is definitely the best ROBIN, and the RR persona is cooler than red hood/nightwing imo because it's a reference to kingdom come.
That's a good point. He was cool in Kingdom Come.
Steohanie actually was batgirl the same time dick was batman.
Stephanie was batgirl, for far longer than she was robin
DCAU Robin was Tim, Teen Titans Robin was more like Tim personality wise, Tim is Robin in Young Justice. Dcamu os Damian
Hot take: Tim drake for me is the worst robin I would take Damiens obnoxious know it all robin over Tim any day
I wanna see arrow family
the best jason was in white knight
3 Robins maximum: Dick, Jason, and Tim. Any more is too many IMO
To be honest I don't read the new continuity so I have no idea what they do with him.
Damian always worked better as Dick Grayson Robin
I always see the conversation of who should take up the mantle of batman. But my question is, why does that need to happen? Why can't everyone just be who the are and the mantle be left alone?
he chose red robin because kingdom come dick grayson became red robin because batman died so he chose it as a reminder that he was the failure of a robin
