  • This series sees The Fight Dietitian, his team, and their colleagues review some well-known weight cut videos that are on social media.
This is purely educational and is to help athletes and coaches identify good and bad practices during this procedure.
In this video, The Fight Dietitian reviews Khabib Nurmagomedov weight cut ahead of his Lightweight Title defence against Justin Gaethje. Khabib looked terrible when he was on the scale and seemed relieved once he was officially cleared.
There was a lot of controversy around this cut so I will assess what went wrong to get to that point.

His Coach Javier said he had the mumps and he injured his toe leading up to the fight, so maybe that played a part in him finding it difficult to lose weight

Not to mention losing his father ! Khabib literally started his camp 2 weeks after his father's passing, I can't imagine how he was feeling training hard for a championship fight & grieving at the same time, no wonder he retired, the emotinal toll it took on him was ridiculous, he's an absolute warrior !!

No.. straight up, he didn't eat right and had more weight to cut than he anticipated..

He used to struggle with cutting weight until he got with a professional who's been on the team since. As for the weigh in, you should know that the UFC measures your weight before you get on the scale

The guy was grieving his father recently passed away. The stress obviously makes it much more difficult to cut weight.

Thank you for the video, your explanation is easy to understand and I gain a lot of knowledge about weight cutting. I agree that when the output is similar they should use the least risk method, fighter’s health is the most important after all. I hope Khabib’s team would reach out to a professional like yourself to evaluate their method, to learn the latest knowledge and safest method that available out there. A lot of fighters from their team would get the benefit from it, so that they would get through weight cutting safely and easily in the future.

Sometimes when you are the champ you let shit slip.. nutrition was off.. his weight was higher than anticipated!!

Hi Jordan, just wondering what the general approach would be if you get an athlete who does reach that point of no return when they stop sweating? And their body goes into survival mode to protect vital organs? When you said “stop and re-assess the whole thing”…… do you mean stop and actually reconsider competing in the fight? Or rather stop the cut, get some fluids in and your core body temp down.

Good video. In his autobiography he mentions how he didn't have a nutritionist. He used to use Makhachev as his chef. He mentions how he used to train too hard and didn't know about smart practices like things you've described. But he does mention outside of camp he's 183. That is normal for a lightweight. In fact Dariush said he's 185, Chandler said he's 190 and Poirier said he's 188

This.....or you could argue that every step they took, got him to win the fight and become 29-0 ....different approach could give a different outcome...just being philosophical about the stuff...what do i know :-D. Anyway , interesting video, thanx.

Maybe if he fought more near to his natural weight he wouldnt have to cut so much

I'm not sure that makes any sense. Can you send some math to support that statement?

@@Andrew-qm5im imagine the expert literally telling you he doesnt even cut extremely, its just done so shittily it looks like he has to, and then coming out of the video thinking its because hes too heavy like bruh.

If he walks around at 80kg, he should fight at 80kg
