Car Free Cycling 😍 Cycling the Bath to Bristol Railway Path
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- I'd heard so much about the cycle path between Bath to Bristol so I couldn't resist going for a ride when in Bath for a couple of nights. It's about 25km/15miles each way and being that the path is made from an old railway line it's quite flat making a great ride for anyone.
It was a sunny day and we saw so many cyclists, young and old and all abilities enjoying the path. Should you ever find yourself in Bath or Bristol be sure to give it a try.

I love exploring new places by bike, especially with weather like this! Do you ride bikes when you visit a new place?
Bikes are the best way to explore.
Thank you for your inspiring mini movies
Not sure if you’re featured it in any of your other videos. But the Twin Tunnels route that starts in Bath and can link on the canal towpath. The two tunnels are quite special as when I last went there there was ethereal sounds being played in them as you cycle their length
Fantastic cycling along this path, I cycled it yesterday for the first time, it's a great example of what can be achieved, we need more like this please. Great video Thank you 😊
Paths like this are great assets for cities. We definitely need more of them.
It would be amazing if you could get between all cities and towns like this!
Cycled it yesterday, great experience due to the big number of other cyclists on many different types of bikes and traffic free, everyone was happy just to be out 🚴♀️🚲. Thank you for the video, wouldn’t have known about it otherwise.
So glad to hear you got to cycle it! It's great to see so many different people making use of the path and like you said so many different bikes!
I like riding empty bike paths but there's a part of me that likes a well-used bike path even more. Walkers, inline skaters, cyclists, young and old all enjoying the paths. Sure the ride is much slower but so many active folks is agood sign for the future.
Nice path! Love when cities make use of old infrastructure for bikes!
Cycled some of this on LEJOG, such a refreshing experience after so many busy roads!
I joined some riding JOGLE and I think they felt the same. There are a few rail to trail paths in this area. Looking forward to exploring more.
great bike path. thanks bring this to us.
Wow. So beautiful place. I want to go there.
It's beautiful ride 😀 and a lovely part of the UK.
Ride On Cycling yep. I like your every video.
Really enjoying your videos and this one especially. We’re based in Bath and it’s such a gem to have this route to Bristol. Found your channel due to searching for a review of the Brompton Electric ⚡️ and me and my partner will shortly be a fully folding electric Brompton duo! Thanks for the interesting videos and general cycling inspiration! 🙌
It's a great path to have on your doorstep. Hopefully one day there will many more. I'm sure you will have many Brompton adventures, the Brompton my husband got really changed how he viewed cycling. He saw it not just a sport/exercise but as a mode of transportation and suddenly he was riding around in normal clothes!
Railway bike path looks good to ride every week !!
When you say Bath to Bristol the subtitles say “Bastard Brazil” 😂
😂It must be confused by my messed up British Canadian accent
@@OneLessCar sorry for being so puerile. It really made me chuckle
Good coffee and cakes at Warmley there. Nice cafe last Bitten too !
One of my favourite routes, used to do day trips by train from Cheltenham just to ride it. The Bristol end has been spoiled by the conflicts between pedestrians and cyclists as more obstacles are being put in place to slow cyclists. Badly needs a cyclists only route building on the busiest section.
You are completely right about that, some widening and segregating would be the smart thing to do along the busiest of sections at a minimum.
That looks like an awesome rails to trails path. Loved the tunnel!
Glad you enjoyed the tunnel, it was such fun to ride through, wasn't sure if I should have left so much footage of it in the video.
The nature is superb
It really is, especially this time of year when everything is blooming. 🌼
I believe that the Bath and Bristol path was the first Sustrans cycle route - the beginning of the UK national network. It was opened in 1979.
Good coffee and cake at Warmley there with all the people. Also a nice cafe at Bitten a mile or two further on towards Bath from Warmley
Thanks for the tips I've made a note for future trips! I had the best coffee I've had in a long time in Bath at Society Cafe.
It's quite a good path that. You can spot the dog walkers, couples holding hands and pram pushers from a long way away and gently coast down to a slower speed. Obviously watch out for leads across the track, though the owners will pull them in if you ding your horn/bell. Even the canal path is quite good but don't try to use it as a race track.
cool path, I like the dark tunnel, I wonder if there are any lights in there at night, in a way it would sort of be cool if it didn't.
It was fun in the tunnel, something about it makes you want to race (no wind either). I've since been told in the other direction from Bath there's more tunnels. I'll be sure to check them out once I move down to the area 😀 my guess is the lights are 24/7 it's a busy commuter route all year round.
The Two Tunnels Greenway south of Bath has the most impressive tunnels. The longest Combe Down is a mile long (1.6km) and much smaller. Quite a surreal experience to race through it and you can't see either end due to curves.
The lights used to go off a night not sure if they still do. Anyone out at night would have lights anyway. Something to do with bats I think.
Put some playing cards in the spokes and ride through the tunnel as fast as you can.
@@OneLessCar I got mugged in this tunnel...
I really enjoy your mini movies.
I noticed you were both helmet free. I can not ride any where with out a helmet. If i do, like testing a bike on my road for 2 seconds, I feel like there's something wrong, like I'm naked or something 😂
Reminds me of the Dutch bike-paths through the dunes on the coast. They are also very busy at weekends with walkers, runners and cyclists. There is never any confrontation. I wouldn't use them if I was in a hurry though. ' Nice 'n easy does it. Love the video. Nice mood. Go-Pro Camera angle makes it look as if Nathan's head is about to hit the bridge girders! Ouch. Often take bike on train and then cycle home. Avoiding rush hours and headwinds of course. What's that device dangling down your back? GPS?
Not good for those in a rush, some did try. I prefer to enjoy the ride and on a sunny day everyone is in such a good mood. Funny you say that about Nathan's head there was a bridge it was very close. The thing on my back is my good camera, a Sony rx100ii it takes fantastic photos and fits in a jersey pocket 😀 the strap let's me get shots on the move 📸
That bridge is dangerously low (I've been under it), I don't know why it doesn't have warnings on it. And the section along the river is very narrow too.
It's great isn't it?. I'm lucky to commute every day along it to work from the Staple Hill tunnel. I suggest you do the Bath Two Tunnels, if not already.
I made it out to the 2 tunnels last August, very cool (literally)! 😀
Would love to check this out on my hoverboards
At last! A proper paved cycle path in England! Not gravel patch, a sheep pasture or a narrow road. I can't wait until the paved Tweed Valley Cycleway from Moffat to Berwick on Tweed is finished in 2027. A tarmac cycle path from the land of John McAdam himself. The world is waiting for this ride. See you there!
I'm still in shock that it has tarmac. The south downs way had old bricks sticking out of the ground loose gravel, fallen tree branch's and all covered in a thick layer of mud.
Perhaps it is worth mentioning that there is a very good disabled cycling centre on this cycle path. They are a charity funded organisation and offer a range of adapted bikes and trikes, including tandems etc:

Looks to be a *very* well used path. Maybe it could do with an upgrade to make it a bit wider to accommodate all the walkers, joggers and cyclists more comfortably. Surely a crowd pleaser for both cities.
It really could and it would be more fair to all. Maybe one day, I believe Sustrans is moving away from promoting shared use.
Bath path (sounds like a lisp when saying bus pass)
Try saying it 10 times fast!
Ha ha !!!
what an ideal place to ride, and Congratulations on your anniversary! Many more years of happy are ahead! How did you get a broken frame, did somebody get hit while riding?
Nothing as dramatic as a crash. Nathan had the BMC in for a tune up, and to get a creaking noise checked and the mechanic found a crack in a hole made to allow for DI2. A tiny tiny crack. It was lucky timing because he has 2 months left in the warranty. But very sad because it's a beautiful bike and he just got new wheels to match. He's waiting on the arrival of the replacement frame which we are pretty sure is silver and orange. So we might both be riding new bikes for the Vätternrundan next month.
Its stunning around there :)
It really is, especially this time of year with all the greenery and flowers.
Ive ridden on that path XD
I would like to ask .. How is the bike going from one city to another? Do trains allow bicycles ?
How long does it take from Bristol central to London central city by cycling?
You can find out more about cycling from Bristol to London here: ua-cam.com/video/RCQlehsEWjE/v-deo.html
and Bath to London here: ua-cam.com/video/c3i5_NuxMLI/v-deo.html
As for how long it's best to route it on google to get an esitmate then add time on for stops (like lunch and other breaks)
Will put the Brompton in the car and do that cycle, it looks good, and Bath & Bristol are nice places. I also park up in East Sheen and cycle Richmond Park and into central London on the Brompton, an area you are both leaving I gather?
It would be a great ride on a Brompton, Bath and Bristol are both great, soon to be my new stomping ground! We will miss Richmond Park when we leave but not the noise of being in the Heathrow flight path.
I sometimes visit a friend in Mortlake and bring my Dahon Cadenza 16sp folding bike , to take her little boy for a ride (give her some piece) or explore Richmond Park. Road around Richmond have bad traffic during rush hour, that walking, kick scooter or cycling is the only way to get around Mortlake/Barnes/East Sheen. You right about the aircraft noise too.
Do you mind sharing your route for Bath to London, I'm looking at getting the train to London and cycling back to Bristol this summer.
It's a pretty easy route, we followed nation cycling network route 4, I believe sustrans has details. We went off of it to avoid some sections of canal paths around Reading but I wouldn't recommend it, we ended up on a busy dual carriage way for a while, and with the traffic in Reading itself I'm not sure if we saved much time.
There is cycle paths seperate from traffic all over Bristol. Just commuter bicycles don't like using them as add a minute to their 30 min journey...
Since your from Canada do you ever have senior moments and find yourself on the Right side of the road?
Nope, I'm more likely to go for the left side in Canada because I've ridden a bike more in the UK. I've actually done it in a car once on a very familiar road (residential luckily).
I'm surprised you do not wear helmets, even in traffic on public highways. Not a great example to youngsters.
That said, Sustrans have excelled in this venture, particularly retaining the signal box and platforms at Warmley.
nice
too bad they didnt make the road wider, wouldnt wanna ride here with the kids in tow
why did my teacher thought this was fascinating
Helmets 😤
or no helmets.
