Just spent 6 hours on pulling my 1979 GL1000 engine, and still haven't cleared it from the driveshaft and still have not been able to access the neutral switch! Frustrating ... but I appreciate the fact that you posted this. Good to know that others agree that "it's quite a job". Will try again tomorrow.
Back in early ‘90’s restored/refurbished 2 1978 GL1000’s. Don’t remember having that much problem getting carbs out. Eventually put 30k miles on the best one. About 5k miles on other. Used the mercury tubes to sync carbs. Really liked/enjoyed those bikes !! Best thing I did was to replace points with an electronic set up.
I have a pair of '79 Goldwings I've started working on. One is a full bike with issues, the other bought as a basket case. All the issues you had with engine removal I had as well. Thank you for the great camera positioning. Possibly some of the best angles I've seen so please keep up the details. As far as the removable rail and rusting, both of my bikes are rusted quite a bit. The front end with the double bolts are barely usable on one and the back aren't a lot better. The other (basket case) ironically is in better condition but still has rust on the frame bolts. The design was good for engine removal, but it allowed water to sit on the bolts which were never protected with paint or any other anti rust compound.

Worked with my late Father in Law to restore a GL1100. @30 Years ago. the Engine transmission unit is over 90 Kg.. the removable Frame Rail does rot around the Side stand weld. I repaired the Frame Rail on my GL 1200 by welding another Tube over the Rail....the tube was sawn to 2/3 rds Section so it was Astride the original one and only Contacting on its Edges. Has not corroded since. Ace Video..Thank you .

Cheers,a useful video to have a look around the engine while its all out of the bike, im looking into getting a crash damaged 1500/1800 and quite like the idea of creating a lightweight trac/ day car like a small mid engine lotus europa convertable (if such a car exsisted),with Valkyrie carbs and exhaust sound it will sound like a little supercar, dont see many in cars yet but i think it could make a cool 70s inspired flyer go and sound well, with most of the brakes and lights switches and controllers being used from an original donor bike gives it interesting legislative standing as a bike/ car "kit". Like single front headlight no front numberplate mot emmisions held at the year of bike. Etc. Anyway thanks muchly😏
good video. towards the end when you were trying to free the engine would lifting the bike off the engine have made it easier? just wondering. good job and thanks for showing us how to do this.
Thanks for watching! Lifting the bike wasn't an option for me as I have no lifting equipment. I am considering lowering the frame onto the engine during the rebuild though, and then re-assembling the rolling chassis afterwards.

The Starter Clutch rarely Fails....just changing the Engine oil usually cures the Problem

Not sure to be honest. I think it would be tricky at the very least, if not impossible.
