Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are UA-cam, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s UA-cam channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her UA-cam channel as well as her reach to up and coming gardeners.

Hey check out the channel Growing Answers to see a youtuber who runs relatively simple growing experiments to assess different lights, growing methods and such. He grows a watermellon on something like 30 watts, and does a banana on close to the same. I think you'd enjoy him!
UPDATE: We are way over 500 😅 so we will put something together on this. I’m going to do this likely on a houseplant set and then also some pepper plants.
I will start this taping for this next week but you likely won’t see any footage until march ish. Just so I can compile enough.
I feel like in a post covid world we should all stop using any items coming from bats. To discourage people from coming in contact with the disease carrying bats. What do you think?
I LOVE THE PLANNER!!!! 🙂
We want the testing done because all the Plant UA-camrs want you to buy it. For you, a soil scientist , your opinion is held higher than the people trying to sell it. I was considering buying it because I watch so much Plant YT that I was getting jealous but then checked the price and shipping…
Yes bio stimulant for indoor plants! Thank you!
love the support!
Did you do the scientific study on this? Would love to see it but haven’t found it yet.
I will do my part to get this to 500 likes because I would love for you to test this product. I’ve been using it for over a year and I haven’t noticed any explosive growth.
That’s interesting. And contrary to a lot of the influencers accounts
@@GardeningInCanada Bank accounts
I would love a video about fermenting!! You are the best in explaining science in a simple way
Yay! Okay. I think the only reason I can explain things easily is because I have a good understanding of it.
Hi, I’d love to see the liqui - dirt experiment. I think it’s wonderful and you obviously have your reservations. As a happy customer or “witness” and a lover of science, I await your experiment.
Any in depth study you share will be greatly appreciated.
Hahah love that!
I’ve replaced all my liquid organic fertilizers with Liqui-dirt. It’s gentle and, in my experience, I’ve not had any browning tips that typically happen when you over fertilize. That said, I super dilute the Liqui-dirt in distilled water to about a quarter the concentration they recommend. I use it every other watering and my plants are thriving.
Same here I love ❤️
They’d thrive even more if you diluted it as recommended.
I learn so much from your videos. I am totally getting away from purchasing any fertilizers and soil amendments. Want to produce everything my plants need right here in my own back yard. Vermicomposting, leaf mold and traditional composting methods along with perennial cover crops.
Will continue monitoring your site for the science behind growing a garden. THANK YOU!
Woohoo! I love that ❤️.
I was looking up liquid dirt and air plants and this came up and I'm glad it did. I have been using liquid dirt for well over a year probably close to two and thought that it was a fertilizer and that was all I needed. Thank you so much for this information. I did research it but apparently not well enough. The reviews were great and like you said with the UA-camrs . It's going to be great to see the difference with fertilizer and that now. It's not so great growing season is basically over . Thank you again
Still would love to see this product tested by you ❤
Is the follow up video listed? I haven’t been able to find it.
Got my tea and I'm ready for this!
HAHAHA I love that ❤️
Curious to know whether you completed a study on liquidirt efficacy in follow up 😊 Thank you for your excellent content!
Gardening in Canada should do a collaboration or take Matt Powers full course of Soil Regenerate. I feel both of these channel an be a great benefit to the world.
Yes please for your liquid diet experiment! LOVE your channel and really appreciate you! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
we are doing it!
I’ve been using it for 6 months and I really like it.
what are you using it on?
On my Hoyas and monstera alb and Thai constellation. Basically on all my houseplants. I got my Thai con from someone who said it took months to grow a leaf. Since in my care it’s given me 3 leaves and the last was fenestrated. My Albo has pushed 3 leaves as well. And I live in NC where the winter has been pretty cold.
Cool!
According to the NPK label on Amazon, it's 1.11 - 0.03 - 13.15, so it seems fair to call it a potassium heavy fertilizer.
Just wanted to refresh what you thought about liquid dirt and I am glad to see that you reached the like requirement!!! So are you planning to make a video of an actual experiment being done 👀??
Yes! Absolutely I will be ❤️
I'd love a video on how to make a bio stimulant for houseplants!!
I use liquidirt along with cal-mag, worm castings, and fertilizer, so I'd love to see an in depth video on LD!! 💚
Okay! Sounds awesome
What fertilizer do you use???
I’m shocked! I’ve always thought liquidirt was all I needed. I dont know anything about fertilizers, so I just bought what everyone said was best. Thank you for this, I’m so thankful.
Glad I could help!
wahoooo almost 800 likes wheres our liquid dirt reviews!! cant wait
This summer!
I would love to see a Series on just fertlizer reviews there are sooooo many brands just on amazon that new growers and even those of us who have been growing for years are overwhelmed with choices. Would love videos on making bio-stimulants!
Thank you so much Ashley!! I've been experimenting using ferments in my garden. I'm fermenting 3kg of whole smelt with lactobacillus in my house right now, without any smell.
Thank you! There a lot! Very cool
Did you ever do any of the testing on this? :)
i'm so happy i found your channel! looking forward to digging around on here in the future
Haha awe! Welcome to the channel
Woo hoo! Guess you’re gonna make a video on Liqui-dirt? Excited. Just joined your channel today after searching for videos on how to heat a greenhouse. I’m so glad I found you, I’m Canadian too, living out here in 5B, on the south east coast of the island of Newfoundland 🇨🇦 I’m also happy to see you grow houseplants, I’m much more proficient in that area, I keep around 120 plants in my home. Lots of reasons to stay tuned to your channel!
That’s so awesome! That’s a ton of plants.
@@GardeningInCanada Soooooo after I wrote this comment I figured I’d do an actual count…168 😳😆😆😆 Well, they’re all alive anyway! Thanks and look forward to watching 🙏💖
Haha that’s awesome
I have 235-245 and use liqui-dirt. I use it every time I water at the diluted ratio of 1/4 a cup to a gallon of water. I am thinking I need a slow release fertilizer too. Some plants should just be doing better than they are I think. I put worm castings in my mix but Im starting to think I need more than the two.
Yes! Please teach us!
Haha sounds good
Please show how to create homemade “Liquid Dirt” and will this help outdoor container plants? Thank you for breaking these down, I’ve bought a number of these types of liquid plant enhancers and need to know if I’m diluting myself😂
I have to admit I bought liquidirt wayyyy back in the beginning of my plant journey. Since I’ve converted to passive hydroponics and have a line of nutrients geared towards that and have learned more about the science behind it, I often bemoan the money I spent on liquidirt. Thank you for making this video. It is much appreciated
Yea it is expensive stuff!
Hello, I am new to passive hydroponics , and I am so confused about what to fertilize them with , please help , suggest something , thank you
I love all that you do! would love to see scientific study on these hyped products that I think probably don’t work so people have proof before purchasing! I wonder if anyone near you would lend their liquid-dirt so you don’t have to buy it
And also would like to learn about making houseplants bio stimulants!
That’s a good question! I might need to ask that question
Let’s get the likes up for this vid!
Haha awesome
Ugh- thanks for this. Newbie plant parent that thought I was essentially gently fertilizing my plants with each watering. I was even skipping every few waterings to make sure I didn’t over fertilize. The marketing got me haha. Should have actually researched!
Patiently waiting for the science experiment video :)
I see you're over 500, so I'm looking forward to your results! New sub!
Yes! It will be awesome I’m just waiting for warmer temps
I would love a video on how to make our own bio stimulant. Loving all the education you provide.
Okay! sounds good!
I would definitely be interested in a thorough study of Liqui Dirt. I have been using it (it's actually pretty cheap to use, since you are supposed to dilute it so much). I have not been super impressed with it, but I don't have anything to compare it to. My question for you is, based on the ingredients, is it possible that it does have some essential nutrients, like NPK, minerals, etc? One houseplant professional I listen to mentioned that they may not list their exact ratios because of the expense involved in getting an official lab to do the analysis.
Also, when I search for this video on YT, it doesn't come up. It's hidden.
Its currently unlisted because i am nervous to post it haha... So only patreons and website users are able to locate it.
Given the number of sales the have, the likely large margins, etc. I dont think a lab analysis is going to break the bank. They could even do it for a single lots and its going to cost $50-$500 depending.
But I do not see any conceivable way in which this has any notable level of N-P-K especially with the dilution ratio.
😂 I understand. I posted it to my 11K member FB plant group in Seattle (oops?), so you'll probably get a few more views (and hopefully subscribers) from there. I'm betting you're right--if you dilute it as much as they recommend, the numbers are probably really low.
Oh no it’s totally fine thank you for the share I appreciate that it help the channel ALOT! It’s going live tomorrow anyways 😂
I've made compost tea with a bucket, water, sugar, and a fish tank aerator and it was decent even though I only had it bubbling for a bit under a week.
Topping with manure and compost between plantings, then watering with Seasol (seaweed solution) and fish emulsion once a week gives me great results with little effort these days.
Would love to see a video on black soldier fly composting one day if you have the time. The larvae has a secondary use as chicken/fish feed so can easily be used in a permaculture/aquaculture setup to help close loops!
oh yea! i have heard of that before
Please buy it!!! I would love to know allll about it from you!! 😊
I love how nerdy you guys are 😂
WOULD LOVE A VIDOE ON FORMENT
Is that a plant fertilizer as well?
Wish I found your video sooner! I was using Liqui-Dirt as my sole “fertilizer” on all my plants for about 3 years. They weren’t doing very well and most had slowed growth to almost a halt (except ones I recently repotted). I used a standard slow release fertilizer on everything and all my plants suddenly started growing! I think it’s disheartening that it is advertised as “the all-purpose plant food”, “Better than plant ferrtilizer”, and “A total care system surpassing NPK ratios” (all direct quotes from their website). I feel like I was misled!
You have definitely hit 500 likes. I really want to see all the stats on this product
I will be!
Quite frankly, I would enjoy your making more videos on any soil/plant related tropics. I personally don't use any type of soil enhancer other than native compost. However, in the interest of science a treatise on Liquid Dirt would need most interesting. I am sooo thankful for each of your videos.
that is fair! I dont add much either
I love you so much. And yes to the liquidirt and the biostimulant tutorial! Both would be rad.
Glad you loved it so much!
Love this informational video. I learn a lot from you!
Glad you enjoyed!
I absolutely love seeing your passion for regulation and authenticity! I cannot wait for you to start your own committee, it will happen!
Haha awe thank you
From one scientist to another, PLEASE do your experiment!
HAHA love that.
yes show us how to do fermented products to use in our garden.
i would love a scientific video on liqudirt, and if you did could you do a section on semi-hydro because i haven’t found anybody talking about that online
What specifically about semi hydro?
@@GardeningInCanada i can’t find anyone talking about how much to use in hydroponics
Let the experiment commence!
Exactly I totally agree
That was so helpful!!! I’m relatively new to houseplants and I totally fall for products like this all the time. I am definitely influenced lol. Love that you bring science into the mix! I have been using liqui dirt for a few months now, and some of my older houseplants look sooo much better. But again, I’m really just beginning to learn about how to really care for them. So the biggest thing that has changed for those older houseplants is that they are no longer being neglected lol. I just give them more attention and they love it! My Monstera gave me the most beautiful leaf recently with extra secondary(?) fenestrations and I’m such a proud mama 😊 thanks again for the info! I’ll keep using it for now but I will ALSO be fertilizing!!!!
That is awesome!

do you have any videos on making the imo systems from Korean natural farming?
I don’t but I’m in the process of making them!
Definitely would love detailed break down of what it is and how it works!
Okay!!! Good to know

Yes, I definitely want to learn how to enhance our native soils.
I will definitely be doing that one once the snow is gonezo

it is coming!
i’d love for you to do a scientific review on ligui-dirt. i use it, but i also use earth medicine and worm castings in my house plants. let’s get this to 500 likes!!! 🙂
You have a ton of good nutrients then. Manure and vermicompost A+++
Well it’s past 500 likes lol
I would love to see a study done!!!!!💖 Have learned so much from your channel and now to not have these answers will be unlike the rest of the content 🤩😍🧐.

Good video. What fertilizer would you recommend most for outdoor plants?
Bloom Formula usually
Plant food is ( Light) !
Thank you for this video! Looks like a soil conditioner .
Can you make a video on Fermenting plant microbes or juice for soil? Aka Korean Farming? JADAM?
Yea! i absolutely need to
This got 1.2K likes... did you ever do that experiment? Im super interested to see
I had to click like because dang girl your knowledge is incredible and you fully went into detail about the “liquid dirt” would it be fun to watch you fully test it sure, but I had to like this video more to just say “I like it” 😃
Hahah love that! I will be testing this summer
I LIKED! Please do the experiment! Thank you!
Okay 👌
I’ve always been super leery of liqui-dirt. I’d love to learn more about DIY bio stimulants though. I hope you get enough likes to do the nitty gritty research!
Okay! Sounds good
And yes, please a video for a biostimulant!!!
Okay 👌
700 likes already so time for you to keep the promise and do the real experiment.
Just subbed in your channel
I will be!
Thanks for the video what was the pellets of manure compost again? Didn’t catch it or seeing description
sorry earths medicine
I’ve been using Liqui-Dirt for over 2 years now, I’ve had amazing results from the very start. I wish I could give a scientific reason for why/how it works, but heck, I’m not a scientist. I’m just a mom who loves to grow plants and gardening… I’ve done countless ‘tests’ (although not controlled environment) but side by side comparisons with propagations, using Liqui-Dirt in one group, “other” brand group, and rain water group. Every time, LiquiDirt surpasses them all.
We also used it in our gardens for the last 2 years, with 3x the harvest as a result.
We went from using traditional fertilizer (that we’d used for 15+ years) and used ONLY LiquiDirt once a week.
Between the amazing growth of my houseplants and triple the harvest of our gardens.. And the fact that I’ve purchased only 2 bottles (costing me around $60 total) it’s been extremely cost efficient, especially compared to other brands. We are completely sold on LiquiDirt.
I’d love to see your test and results.. out of pure curiosity, but no matter the results, I’m sticking with LiquiDirt and would continue to highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who loves growing plants and gardening.
** side note. Yes, I have an affiliate code. I feel I should state this just for the sake of being transparent. I can say with complete honesty, I do feel a little bias about it but moreso because I’ve seen LiquiDirt work magic for me. I wouldn’t say my bias is because of my code, it really doesn’t make enough money to change my opinion. If it was a bad product, I wouldn’t waste my time. My last payment was a total of $5, for an entire month. I spend a good amount of time talking about LiquiDirt with other plant people and making videos/posts about it, just for the sake of sharing something that truly helped me and my plants. Rehabbing plants, propagation, packaging/shipping plants, gardens, and overall houseplant growth. Code or no code, I would use and recommend LiquiDirt either way.
Yes yes yes, I'd love to see that video on biostimulants. Also the smallest liquidirt container last me soooo long. I haven't even finished using a capful of the it the year I've tried it. Let me know if you would like some. I'd be happy to ship it.
Haha that’s inssne
New sub and really enjoy the scientific approach without all the "cats and unboxings" ( nothing against cats) I've transformed my backyard into a S. FL jungle and really enjoying your houseplant videos!
Nice!!
Some lady in my FFL group swears by it… but I came to you for the tea 😂
HAHAH
I have liqui-dirt and am so happy to now know that I still need a fertilizer! Thank you so much! I have only been working with indoor plants for a year. If I get Earth Medicine as a fertilizer (I love that it’s a Canadian product), is that all I need to use…once a month for all plants? Is there any plants it’s not good for? Do you have a video about using it? Thanks again for all you do! Also…as far as building a committee like you mentioned in this video…is that something you could set up a go-fund me for or something? There are so many followers on this channel, I’m sure you could get a good deal of money to support you to get something like that started. That would be awesome!
Yea thats possible! I did do a video on earths medicine ages ago.
Love it ☺️ I'd love if you did more scientific study on hyped products. Awesome knowledge your sharing with plant loving people
Glad you’re enjoying!
Yes please on liquid dirt. !!!!
Okay sounds good. Houseplants or garden?
Yes, make my own bio stimulate, yes, yes, yes I’m interested! Thanks Ashley
Okay! Sounds good houseplants or garden?
@@GardeningInCanada either or both, Is there a difference? Why? My outside gardening is in containers…city girl😟
There are such regulations in California. Need to have NPK, etc and CFU/ml for microbes. That’s why Liquidirt can’t ship there currently, as they aren’t registered as a fertilizer with the CDFA. In California, a plant food etc is required to register as a “fertilizer” with whatever they are claiming. Hope that helps.
Interesting! I knew I was seeing something sus
PLEASE MAKE MORE VIDEOS ABOUT THIS
Love the love
1.6k likes, 16k views, did you test this? I cant find it on your channel
Love your show!!! You explain things to the novice so it can be understood!!!
This liquid soil sounds like a "tea" or something like ReCharge!!!
Again, thanks for all you do & share! ✌️
Woohoo! Glad you’re enjoying
This is great info! Thank you. Would love to see the video on diy biostimulant!!!
Sounds awesome I’ll get it done
yaaaay can you show us each step of the experiment? please???
of course! worst case it goes on the blog.
Biostimulants please!
Love your scientific view! ❤️
Woohoo sounds good
I learn so much science from your channel. It’s quite refreshing . I shared your video on fertilizing plants during the winter with a plantuber who was spewing the “fact” that you should ABSOLUTELY not fertilize plants during the winter. I guess as viewer we must recognize that most plantubers are regular plant enthusiast, just like us and they are not scientist!
I'm ABSOLUTELY interested in a video about cultivating your own microbes in a bucket. I don't know if I'd do it myself lol but definitely interested in the process as well as the benefits of using it vs not
Haha that’s fair.
Also curious what you think about Marphyl, did you already do a video on it?
Okay now also wondering about nutrient lockout, and mixing Marphyl, superthrive or liquidity with fertilizers like Shultz. I have Shultz and Marphyl and have them mixed separately and water with just one of them. I do have superthrive too, but don't use it much, I'm doubtful about its benefits
You can buy a sample of liquid dirt for around $10 on Amazon. You mix that w a gallon of water in an airtight container. Use 1 cup of that mixture into a new gallon each time you water. So your money does go a long way. I'm on week 2 of testing it myself.
Oh interesting! A sample pack is a good idea
I'm from ontario and recently purchased a bottle of liqui-dirt! I mixed mine with distilled water to avoid too much contamination so if you'd like to start some early experiments without having to purchase a bottle, I'd be more than happy to send you some!
Okay sounds awesome! Did you grab it from Amazon?
@@GardeningInCanada ironically ordered mine directly from the site with an affiliate link 😂
😂 love that
Biostimulant video construction would be amazing. I’m all about having control over what’s in my soil rather than completely relying on others and their “unverifiable” claims. To which, if you could set up a committee, resources willing, to review such unregulated terms and/ or products, such as “biostimulant” or “plant food,” you’d be doing the community, and world at large, a great service.
DREAM! haha just need to get a bigger platform
I'm really interested in that fermenting process! I'd like a video on that please.
Okay sounds good are you houseplants or veggies
@@GardeningInCanada Both! I have a lot of houseplants and I'm planning my vegetable garden right now.
Okay! Good to know
Another excellent video! Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I hope you get all the money you need to help the Earth! You're awesome:)
glad you enjoyed!
What light mode do you use for mature plants the grow light feature or the flower one? I have one from Home Depot it’s a bulb that was 50 bones 🥴
It also has a seedling one. All different colors blue, bright white and red for flower. Geez. Thank you!
Is it for house plants or veggies
@@GardeningInCanada house plants. Veggies will be my next adventure! Lol
When you get around to performing the study could you do a side-by-side with Evolve Dirt n' Grow?
Yea sure! I did use that on one tomatoes bed this year
Totally need the 5 gallon microbe solution
HAHA perfect!
Hi dear, thanks for this. Sooooo... in fall 2020, I put a clear plastic bin with a white lid outside, to dry the soil. I had some soil in the bin and it was a bit too moist and started to smell like mold. After a few days it rained on the bin and water got in (the lid flips open from the middle, so it's not a lid you take off but flip open). So I had to leave it outside again to dry. This process repeated a few times and eventually I just left it there. So the bin has been through one harsh winter, one mild one, plus the summer of 2021. Meanwhile, the contents is a very dark brown slush and there's like a mini kelp forest growing from what I can see from the outside. The volume of the contents has about doubled. I am seriously scared of picking this bin up. It's can't explode on me, but who knows what I would breathe in or disperse around me by moving it?! What's your take?!
Oh that’s bizzare it’s basically a tea now. Maybe will a lot of Algea.
I make JMS, and it works great!
Oh yes!
I have liquidirt and a science background! BS in biology and then became a teacher with a Master's in education (now I'm a stay at home mom). I'd love to be of some help if possible 😊
Oh perfect! Are you a houseplant person or a gardener?
@@GardeningInCanada both! I have a bunch of house plants and I'll be starting seeds in a couple weeks (Massachusetts)
You should do a tray of seedlings with liquid dirt and a tray without just to see
@@GardeningInCanada will do! I propagate my houseplants a lot too so I don't mind trying something with them also😊
Maybe have three different groups, one with liquidirt, one without, and one with a well-known fertilizer (with listed N-P-K), just to see what a good fertilizer SHOULD do.
Have you ever looked at Noot? They listthe NPK in their site. But also seem to have similar claims as liquidirt. They don’t say you need to fertilize on top of their “plant food”.
I haven’t heard of that one before actually!
@@GardeningInCanada check it out. I’ve been using it for a few months. Seems to be giving me crazy root growth all around. But curious as to a soil scientists perspective on it!
I’ll look into it!
@@GardeningInCanada we can provide product for you to test out when you’re ready, just let us know!
@@Myusernamehere33 thanks for the mention! You can always add things to your mixture and experiment, but generally most people seem fine without more additives for general health. More specific problems may require more specific solutions like pesticides, etc.
What do you think about compost leachate? I get a lot of this juice from my composter. I used to think that it was a good resource but then found out that commercial composters consider this as a pollutant. I am no longer sure whether I can water my garden with diluted leachate.
Thanks for your videos. They are refreshing!
I’ll do a video on this but it’s likely just fine. It’s going to be mostly water, bacteria and a few other odds and ends
Would love to see your recipe in a head to head (bonus points for cost of recipe)!
Haha okay! Perfect
I would really love for you to do a controlled experiment utilizing liquidirt 😎 thx I love your videos!!
Coming soon!
Okay! Great video as usual. I'll try to send as many peeps here as I can to get the 500 likes. I'd LOVE for you to do your science on liquidirt and Bios. I have both. I've been using Bios longer and I definitely have confirmation bias (company local to me, good people, smells like my granddad's home brew when I was a kid), and along with DirtNGrow, I recommend bios to people. I have seen zero benefits from liquidirt, and honestly, I feel a little duped. It could be because I use Bios in my potting soil, so over time I have got it into most of my plants, and I have a pretty good watering thing down, so there's no benefit to adding it for me. I'm kinda a little sad that I am seeing my local planty shops selling Liquidirt alongside Bios since it's being so pushed on youtube. So, I'd love a comparison. (Totally not affiliated with Bios in any way, just like supporting local / Canadian),
Yes! Absolutely I totally understand that. I’m pretty certain bios is a drastically different product as well.
