Since my husband and I each were young children we have always loved to be around people that are older than us and glean that knowledge. That is something that is just invaluable. People that don't take the time to do that in the younger generation don't know what they're missing.

The best thing I ever did was let my grey grow through. I got very frustrated while it was growing out and did in the end cut it shorter. 3 years later it is now down past my shoulder and I just have it trimmed about once a year. It’s amazing how many people compliment me on the colour, I just say it the colour god me t me to have. I really wish I had gone grey gracefully years ago and saved the thousand of pounds I have spent over the years trying to cover my grey.

I’ve colored my hair at home for over 30 years. My family tend to turn grey early. I got tired of having to retouch every 2 weeks so in August I quit dying it. It has been so liberating I love it! I just turned 60 and my family says it makes me look older but I don’t care. As for wearing white I prefer colored clothing over white. Plus I’m am a retired nurse and for years we had to wear white uniforms so I prefer colors!

Wild persimmon pudding is really delicious. The Native Americans called persimmons "custard fruit" due to the bright yellow custard like texture when the fruit is dead ripe. It was one of the first fruit trees found in America. When the fruit is ripe, the outside skin turns black and the persimmons fall from the tree. It is full of large black seeds. Yes, by all means, wait until after the first frost to use persimmons; otherwise your mouth will pucker at its bitterness. I am blessed here in the foothills of North Carolina to have several native persimmon trees. Diane

When a friend of mine who used to work for a major women's catalog company knew that I had gone salt and pepper. She said you know you have a whole bunch of new colors that will look really nice on you. Cuz I always had Brown hair. And she said you can wear lavender now, you can wear lime green, you can wear yellow, I can't remember all of the colors that she told me but that was kind of a few of them. So yeah it does kind of open up a new world of things to wear. Because I always preferred Jewel tones, or brown.

Thank you for sharing these fascinating statistics about women coloring their hair and time spent on their appearance! I saw this play out in my own family. My grandmother, born around 1900, never dyed her hair. But she looked lovely all the time and she always wore a little makeup and she only wore skirts and dresses, no slacks and heaven forbid jeans! My mom and her three sisters born in the 1920's and 1930's did color their hair, I think to look younger, since they worked outside the home unlike my grandmother. It's interesting to think that men for the most part at that time didn't feel the same pressures to look younger at work and they were allowed to go gray. I also remember when the Clairol home coloring kits were first available and one of my aunts used one and it turned her hair GREEN! In a panic she called Clairol and they told her how to fix this. Having heard about her misfortune I resolved not to color my hair and I still haven't at age 72.
