- Time to become a wizard so you can get the good restaurant seats! It's Hocus Pocus, an Apogee game totally not based on the movie.

I used to call Heretic "Hocus Pocus 3D". You know, like Duke...
That is actually hilarious.
I remember playing this when I was a smaller form of human.
me and my inner smaller form of a human found that funny.
*****
And they are called the Intel siblings?
Ah yes the ever present micro humans that eventually grow to macro assholes
bricknose but yes but that
Before anyone asks, the shirt came from www.popuptee.com/
They sell unique designs for a limited-time only at a lower price point. Then the designs are often retired or sold at a higher price later. The Duke/Fallout one was from a couple months back.
Wh..... Thank you!
I'M THROWING MY MONEY AT THE SCREEN BUT NOTHING IS HAPPENING!
i was about to ask about the shirt lol
Lazy Game Reviews I already found it at Red Bubble www.redbubble.com/people/olipop/works/12753407-come-get-some?grid_pos=22&p=t-shirt&ref=shop_grid

Ah awesome! Yeah it appears popuptee isn't selling it right now, so that's great.
It's so awesome to have old school computer games reviewed versus the typical 8 and 16 Bit consoles. Great job man and keep up the good work!
Still play this game these days. Thanks for the good vibes LGR, hopefully I'll find out some games I haven't played yet using your channel.
Also,
4:35 - I thought I was the only one that played DOS games like that.
I'm always so impressed with your script. Your descriptions are hilarious and very clever. You sir, are talented as fuck.
Zachary Gardner I appreciate it!
Oh yeah! There's a Doom mod for this now! It's a pretty good Doom mod.
Exact ! I played it too and it's an amazing mod ! I've not been able to finish it because it's too demanding on PC performance and my lowend PC tranformed it into a 3D slideshow ... But this mod is really close to the original game with shiny colours, breakable bricks and challenging opponents. I recommend it :)
I played the heck out of this game on my father's DX4 PC back in 1995-1996 and completed all the episodes and the difficulty levels! It has its charms, though it's difficult to explain now that I haven't played it in more than 20 years! Thanks LGR for making me feel nostalgic and miss the old DX4 (which eventually became mine in 1999). Keep up the good work!
I distinctly remember downloading the shareware version of this off of the one local BBS that was in my area as a kid. Such good times back then, a lot of the old Apogee games were the staples of my game collection back then. I would mow lawns in the neighborhood for a few dollars and my grandma would convert the cash into a check that I could mail in to the company and get the full retail versions in the mail. I miss those days...
Used to do very much the same :) Had a friend with a "fast" 9600 baud modem and no problem racking up long distance charges for BBS access. Got all sorts of Apogee and Epic Megagames shareware, would mow lawns and weed gardens for all the money I could to get full versions!
I love how they went overboard with the psychedelic gradients when 256 colour became the thing :P
You two are the greatest lawnmowers the world needs... but not what the world deserves!
Cardboard that feels exactly like cardboard? Well shit, I'm sold!
LemnzestManatee give me some woodgrain
I rarely ever comment on videos, but LGR, Thank you for reviewing Hocus Pocus, it was one of my favourite games as a kid!
I truly don't have anything to say(But then again, do most commenters have that?), except that I hope you keep up the good work.
Stay Safe, and may you always find joy in what you do.
Thank you very much :)
Lazy Game Reviews I even got a reply? I can die happily now.
Tom Hall? That's dope. Fish.
Nice.
aw, now I really want to see you review the movie Hocus Pocus. also the duke/fallout boy shirt is amazing.
Or the song Hocus Pocus by Focus. I'd rank the Hocus Pocuses in this order:
1) Song
2) Movie
3) Game
MyNameIsBucket hmm a good point, I had forgotten about that song
MyNameIsBucket That song is good in so many ways, first time I saw it on youtube I WTFBBQ'd for 10 minutes straight, then I hit replay.
That shirt is very awesome indeed 👌
I want to say I'd wear that shirt in public... but I wouldn't...
I love the Bugs Bunny references from Transylvania 6-5000! Nice work, LGR and thanks for the upload.
Another game I spent WAY too much time on in my childhood! :D
Know why I love you channel? Because you grew up on the same games I did, and seeing them all again hits me right in the nostalgia. Thanks for that.
Oh. My. God. This is the 1st ever PC game I ever played when I was 9 in 1995 on my very first pc, handed down to me by a neighbourgh who decided he didn't need Windows 3.1 anymore and upgraded to Windows 95.... He just gave me the machine, and left me to figure out everything about this newfangled komputor I'd just acquired... including the screensaver password... which I did! I stumbled upon the files for the game, I don't exactly know how but... I guess it musta been saved somewhere in DOS or whatever...
This HAS to be the 1st pc game I ever played, Solitaire and Minesweeper notwithstanding. I only had a passing memory of it and didn't remember what it was called...
So many memories just came flooding back... I'd almost cry...
Thanks for the nostalgia, man, it's amazing!
Hey, _Hocus Pocus_; one of the few shareware games we actually owned the full version of. Still have the CD containing it, complete with jewel case and manual (although the game is so small that it's a bit of a waste of CD real estate, but whatever, means I can still install it on computers lacking floppy drives)!
Really liked the game, although it dawned on me later that there are only 3-4 types of enemies in the entire game (bosses notwithstanding): ones that walk but charge you when you're the same plane as them, ones that walk but shoot at you, ones that fly and shoot at you, and ones that fly and drop things on your head. The graphics for each change from world to world, but the behavior doesn't, really.
Also, the game would randomly give me turbo-fire (white bottle) or laser-fire (the limited fireball things) completely out of the blue, not from any bottle but for just walking around, which was more than a little weird (although not unappreciated). I wonder if that's tied to playing on Easy or something...? I know the game has cheat codes to give yourself them at any time, but they're not entered using Ctrl/Alt, so I doubt I entered them accidentally.
Ah, well, it was stilll a moderately big part of my childhood, so I can't really complain. Never heard of _Clyde's Adventure_, nor noticed "BROIL CHQ", so yay, learning something new!
(Also, somebody's attempting to remake the game in ZDoom, which is pretty impressive: forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?t=45804)
I laughed so hard at the "Smash, The Alt Key" clip.
Someone turn that into a gif meme please.
lol I was looking for this comment, me too
Ah, I remember playing this a lot as a kid. It was in a game disc we had along with one of the Commander Keen games and Hugo 3: Jungle of Doom.
Even watching you channel for ages, I didn't knew you did a video on this childhood love of mine! Thanks (5 years later) for reviewing it! :D
DUUUUUUUUUDE!!!!!! This game DOMINATES the NOSTALGIA goo that is MY BRAIN!!!!! Sadly, me poor, so I be a dirty pirate, but I'll NEVER quit playing this amazing, old-timer!!! Kudos on all your vids man! You do a fine job!
this game came pre-loaded on a computer i got as a kid and completely forgot about it until now...i had the craziest nostalgia flashback thing. i remembered that computer, and the details of the room and even the smell. there was a simple game i loved on that pc that i cant remember the name of. a bunch of balls bounced around a screen and you had to draw a line across the screen to separate them but the balls couldn't touch the line as you were making it. it's a common concept, but i want the version i played. it must be from the same era as Hocus Pocus...anyway, thanks for this review...it surprisingly meant a lot to me
JezzBall?
Robert Seale that's the one, thanks
"An evil monk doing the first part of YMCA" :D :D :D
Marcell Izidor Cellavy but yes!
Dayum, dat nostalgia, Hocus Pocus along with Jazz Jackrabbit was one of my favorites sidescrollers back in the day, it was also the first game I played in colors (I had a monochrome monitor) so I have a pretty fond memory of the game.
Too bad I never played the full version of the apogees classics.
Keep the good work, you lazy guy!
Holy hell. This is exactly why I watch your videos; to remember games I used to play that I've long since forgot about. The second I saw the title screen I almost spit out my drink. Thanks again.
Yay, memories!
This is actually one of the first PC games I ever played. When we got our first PC in 1993/94, a Compaq Presario 486, my sister and I were each allowed to pick one shareware CD to go along with it. I chose the one with Raptor: Call of the Shadows, my sister chose the one with Hocus Pocus. Both turned out to be excellent picks, despite neither of us knowing the first thing about playing PC games yet.
Man, I played the crap out of this game as a kid. The graphics, especially with the parallax scrolling of the backgrounds, seemed incredible to be back then.
So much nostalgia!! I played this religiously as a kid alongside Jazz Jack Rabbit and Skyroads! Great review LGR!
Wow, well over a million subs by now! This was my first review I watched from you. Your affectation and tone of reviewing is so cash. I'm gonna keep on a-watching your new joints bruh.
I have actually a good deal of nostalgia for Hocus Pocus, since it's one of the first games I ever played. Only the shareware version, though. Later, my father got the full version from the internet and many, many years later (as in, last year), I finally got it legally from GOG.
I think it holds up quite nicely. It's not stellar, but very solid and provides quite a good amount of fun. I also never found the combat annoying, repetitive and button-mashy as it may be. I just think that enemies tend to spawn to late, as it's very easy to just run into them, if you are not careful.
I love your videos. The classic games you review bring out the nostalgia back in the days. Amazing feeling. Keep it up.
Oh man, you have no idea how long I stayed in menu screen just listening that magnificent theme.. The nostalgia is unreal, still sends shivers down my spine, in a good way.
Thank you so much for this review LGR, I was really looking forward to this one.
Ah yes, Hocus Pocus. I played it a lot when I was young, alongside Jazz Jackrabbit xD It was quite addicting and some later levels had really interesting or even scary backgrounds. It was fun ^^ And that intro music is groovy
Love all the Bugs Bunny quotes in this episode.
Thanks :D _Transylvania 6-5000_ is one of my favorites.
One of mine and my sister's favourite games back in the day. We had this on CD-ROM, and played the heck out of it!
I have been waiting so long for you to do a review of this. Thanks LGR
I'm so glad you covered this and were always wondering what your thoughts were on this game. You're also lucky that you have the full copy... I only have the Shareware copy of this, but Hocus Pocus is always a must on any of my DOS systems.
I loved this game growing up, it still holds up today, looks beautiful and I always loved the music as well. I know it's not that high on your list but to me it means very much, Thank you for the review.
Holy crap I played this as a child! Completely forgot it but I remember those sprites! And the music at the end... damn.
Not only does the main menu spell BROIL CHQ, the initials on the difficulty select screen are an anagram of MEH. :-o
"I'm a vampire!" "Oh yeah? I'm an umpire!"
Grim Theologian Yes only does the main menu spell
I had this one, when i was in like grade one or two. Never knew what it was called. So many memories. Thank you so much.
It's amazing how many of my childhood games you have covered so far, despite living on the other side of the planet. :D
Nice WB references from Bugs Bunny's, "Transylvania 6-5000" (1963)
after a crappy day, you realize, there's a new LGR video, and then you decide it's not so bad after all :)
I have played as a little kid. Brings back so many memories, thanks !
Pretty much my favourite game of my childhood. This and Mystic towers are just two games ill never ever forget.
1:12 i didnt think anyone outside of Washington knew about Walla Walla. They have amazing sweet onions there, easily some of the best onions inthe world
We were spoilt for choice in the 90s for quality PC platform games - Commander Keen, Duke Nukem, Dangerous Dave in the Haunted House, Hocus Pocus, Claw....
Fabulous, carefree, nostalgic gaming at its best!
Pocus Hocus, Hocus Cadabra, Abra capocus
"Because reasons!" I like that! Take a note of that someone who does not exist! I want to use that phrase more often in my conversations!
I played this on a Cd that came in a Game FX book, and it also had Rise of the Triad on it and a topdown shooter. They didnt have all the episodes , i remember just playing episode 1 of most of Apogee stuff.
Me and my sister played this game a lot when I was a lot younger. I have a lot of nostalgia for this game.
Thanks for you post! I now remember that this was the game I played in the win 3.1 dos window that cause my family's computer to crash when I was a kid. When I reset it, I read in the readme file that they do not recomend playing it inside win 3.1
Why did my parents have to throw this and most of my other old software away? :(
Childhood memories. I always loved the game and especially the music that comes with it... Gotta start DOSBox one more time!
I used to LOVE this game! I installed it again a little while ago and did another playthrough. It wasn't as satisfying/fun as it used to be, but those graphics and especially the sounds/music took me back :)
This game was so good back in the day. An Apogee hidden gem.
One of the games that i used to play A LOT back then... the game is good but the music and the sound effects are AWESOME!!!
We used to play this together - one was shooting, the other moved the character. Good memories. 😍
BROIL CHQ
i love the self-aware way that you speak of these old DOS titles
Games like this were perfect for me and my siblings back then. One would have to do the jump&running and one would be on fire button duty, cranking out as much bolts as possible.
Boy do I love this game, I love it so very much. I first played the shareware version when i was 12, and then last year I bought the full version from GOG, and I don't regret it, I was hoping you'd review this one. Such a brilliant game, sure it's simple and boring to some, but I love it.
This definitely reminds me a lot of Clyde's Adventure and Clyde's Revenge. Speaking of which, you should totally get around to reviewing those games at some point. I had a lot of fun with them back in the day. :D
I remember having the shareware and playing it for about 5 minutes... It was cool, but there were probably other games I was invested in during that time. There were many sharewares I skipped do to all the in-betweens we do prior going back to gaming
Classic Apogee game! Now I'm feeling the need to watch your review of Monster Bash!
I used to play this way way back... Love the music! Thanx man!
I completely forgot about playing this game when I was young. This was one of the first games I played on a computer. This and Cosmo.
I remember playing the shareware version of this back in 1994 on a 486 equipped with an 8 bit Sound Blaster. The game was fun, but the music made it memorable.
Why is LGR smashing his keyboard with that hammer? To show you the amazing repetition of Hocus Pocus! And this hammer is real!
2:19 HOLY SHIT!!! what a BABE!!!!
I can't even remember how many times I played through the shareware episode, I love this game! Really happy I could grab the full version from GOG a while ago
The music is by far the biggest contributor to me liking this game.
I thought I was the only one that fondly remembered Clyde's Revenge. I always thought it was an odd game that definitely stuck out in my memory because they had no enemies whatsoever; Clyde was only facing the dangers of spikes, lava, gravity, and time. Maybe I'll check out Hocus Pocus sometime since it has more than just logic puzzles this time.
Having grown up playing this on dos I think about this game a lot. Great music too
This was the best game in my childhood, played it all the time.
Hey, a DOS game that I actually remember playing as a kid
I have only played the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 version of this game, I didn't even know this was an actual game until more recently!
4 years late but I love that shirt, it's friggin' awesome!
I searched for this randomly... hoping that you reviewed it so I could relive my childhood if for just a few minutes
Cardboard that feels like cardboard? What kind of dark magic is this?!
I believe you have just covered all of my dos favorites at this point. That is except for commander team which I find it odd that I haven't been able to find a video for it from you.
Wow, I remember playing this in the DOS days, but it came in a "99 games" CD that only had mostly demos.
the theme song is one of my favorite of all the games I've played.
"Once its over, you're probably not going to be thinking about it all too much."
Lies! I've been thinking about this game for 25 years!
Used to have this game and alot of other games in one big box. I got it for christmas but I do not what the box was called again? It contained several DOS games around 50-100 DOS games I guess. I was 6-7 at that time. Any idea what the name of that collectors box was LGR? I remember it also had Dr. Riptide
Showing a evil monk doing the first part of the YMCE. GOT ME X´D
Looks like a nice DOS game. Like you I have never played it but get a sort of nostalgia just looking at the graphics.
thanks for reviewing it and this is the type of game I am trying to create at the moment so might get some tips from it ;)
Loco sos un capoooo!!!! Altas reviews papà! EMI
I never had the chance to get a shareware game and order full version and get it delivered to your mail box. But I think it would be an awesome feeling.
I know you prefer DOS games but it would be amazing if you would make a review of Age of Empires (1 and/or 2), Diablo 1 and/or 2, original Serious Sam and some other old but great games from that era.
Ah, Hocus Pocus, first game i tried that came pre-installed on my first PC i bought, a IBM 386, along with Major Stryker and Norton Commander :D
This brings back so many happy memories. I recently watched a doom mod of this and got to experience it in 3d and that was equally nostalgically awesome.
Yes yes yes! I have played this so many times. I loved it as a kid. Wouldnt spend a whole afternoon until I finished the game..
I have clear memories of playing this but had no clue that Clyde's Adventure even existed until now, interesting
5:04 Least satisfying fireballs ever.
Man I remember playing the shareware version of this over and over. I just loved it. Not sure it would keep me interested now but still. I haven't had fun on my PC since the days of Apogee, 3D Realms and Sierra. Now That 3D Realms and Sierra are back maybe we'll start getting great games again. Now don't get me wrong there are some great games out there but nowadays they rely so much on the graphics that the gameplay sometimes takes a backseat.
This was our main game to play the last 10 minutes of library class in elementary school.
Clyde's scream when he dies is funny
