I like the barista. She looked so sad when he sat down, like, "He's day drinking again", but when he ordered a coffee instead, she looked so surprised and so happy, like "Good job, man. I'm proud of you." She's a good friend to have.
This is one of the better comments here. it's one of the subtler details in the video and it speaks volumes.

“Leave a light on if your able, because we both know your unstable” has to be my favorite line in this song

With PTSD as an ARMY Vet this hits so hard! My heart felt this, I don't know why I never heard it before!
Reminds me of PTSD, and how it can feel to someone, a couple of lines even seem to go along with what people experienced.
"Leave your weapon, on the table, wrapped in burlap, barely able, don't get angry, don't discourage, take a shot of liquid courage..."
A soldier coming home, being disarmed, fooling someone into thinking they're ok with their life.
I can think of something else that can relate to that line, but it's not PTSD.
I just realized: in the elevator, when the main guy’s monsters killed the other guy’s monsters, does that help the other guy emotionally?

I like the idea of having an animated video for a song over a live action one. You can really grasp the feeling better in an animation. Great job guys 👏👏👏
The symbolism of this video always strikes me. The mask is right next to him on the floor, so close within reach. It's so easy to slip into that "cover it up, no one needs to know" mentality when you're down on the floor like that. No one can break it off except for Father Time, who gradually reveals to you that you're drowning, and it's all because of the mask calling the shots, not you.
Even in the song, "Leave a light on if you're able cuz we both know you're unstable." "Call a doctor say a prayer, choose a god you think is there." All you can do to fight it is hope that you'll be alright (with some help of course) and let everyone know you're still home.
Let me be the one to say that this, even as presented in the song and the animation, is the work of the monsters, not reality. They entice us to take on their mask, allowing them to brew and fester under the skin, dripping down into each crevice until the only thing they don't control is the kill switch. That, my friends, they can never take. In the end, you may not be able to heal fully from their attacks, they may leave traces and tracks, but your decision to throw the kill switch will drive them back into the darkness. From that moment when you make that choice, they will never have the same hold on you as they once did.
That is, unless you turn it off again.
They may fight, they may never say die, but that does not mean they can't be killed. The dragons we have made haunt us, but every dragon that has ever lived (except for Saphira) has been killed. If you understand nothing about them but one thing, let it be that they can die, and you can kill them.
What wired me out is how everyone is either mad or depressed but the masks have sinister smiles or calm frowns
3:27 that’s clever, I love seeing the attention attention logo in your videos, idk why

dora1589 I know. Your point is??
Liam Stockbridge I’m going to see them on the 10th and I’m so excited!!! They did a great job on the details
I just learned that this song is about depression, and now the masks make sense. Depression is something everyone is always trying to hide, hence the masks. OMG I love that.
And the titular monsters are representative of people lashing out while hiding their depression, as far as I can gather.
I think it’s also about how we hide our emotions behind masks of conformity and when we don’t express them, they turn ugly
And Liquid courage is the alcoholism that people drink when they are depressed.
@@neon-greengeth4766 liquid courage can be anything you rely on for strength but it's normally alcohol for most people sadly
depression isn’t the main topic, My monsters are real. It can be pain, anxiety, etc. It’s about standing up and facing your demons. Most run from them, Hide behind a god that “cares”. Instead of facing them head on. My monsters are real and they’re trained how to kill. If i don’t be mindful of the parts of me then they will kill me. The masks represent the many faces we show others while hiding our own face for what ever reason. About realizing you can’t heal everything in you and still trying to get up and move forward. Most people think they can’t move when hurting, meanwhile they most certainly can. Pay attention to the lyrics, They are pretty damn descriptive.
So many wallpapers can be taken out of this video 😍😍😍

OCD, Bipolar, severe anxiety, raised by a crazy mom and a dad who gave up before he died, all these words in this song are too damn true.
The end of that animation. It's true, there's nothing more terrifying than when the mask that let's you face the world and your own monsters slips.
"The single common quality among every living creature on this planet is fear. Its funny then, that as common as fear is, we so easily underestimate its power. fear of growing close to someone and a subsequent fear of loss. A fear of failure, and as more people depend on you those fears can take on greater power. But fear itself is unworthy of concern. It is who we become while in its clutches. Will you be proud of that person? Will you forgive them? Will you understand why they felt the need to do the things they did? Will you even recognized them, or will the person staring back at you be the very thing you should have feared from the start? I guess we all find out sooner or later..."- Professor Ozpin, RWBY Volume 7
Fear and sadness are equally common in everyone, but how we handle or monsters is much more important than the monsters themselves.
TearsOfLA very accurate.
In my eyes , it is as follows , the unnatural things you believe in will become your inner self , those things are mostly false beliefs , when that happens , it will do much harm to your real inner self , and potentially lash out , to hurt others as well. The fear is mostly , fear of your own self and the unknown , or what you have become , so you try to run away from that thing , but as your post said , yes you must face your inner self and rid yourself from false beliefs to become your own self , only then you will be rid of that thing that seeks your demise and causes fear and other negative things :)
That speech is just legendary

The song reminds me of soldiers coming home from war and having to put on a fake face of happy. Inside they know monsters. The monsters are real and trained to take no prisoners. Yet we fool everyone. We tell them we are ok and put on that mask to fool. While inside our monsters rage.
You don't have to face them alone.
Welcome home, by the way.
Welcome home brother
I see you! ✊
Welcome home, thank you for your service
That's not what the song's about, but it should be.
Played this during the boss fight of our Werewolf the Apocalypse campaign, interpreted it in a different way, but it was suitably epic and the lines "Good for you, you fooled everyone", "Cause my monsters are real!", & "There's no coming back in Nature's lap with how I feel" was very fitting!
Really set the mood for how it goes for vampires (even powerful ones, though not the top tiers obviously) when they get caught out by a pack of werewolves without support
the attention attention sign in his eyes showed me In a away that the album helps you and let’s you know your worth and knows that you aren’t battling these things along! Amazing job
That statement is better expressed by the band reaching for the sinking man.
Honestly i don't really know why but this song became my depression and anger song and i just love hearing it after a long day of hell
We all wear masks to protect the people around us from the monsters inside us, but in the end we become the very thing we want to avoid
This video for me shows you that for Everything you do, you have to be careful because all those things/projects, can be evil and traps you. Also, You can think the fact that everyone has a mask which hide their true feelings/hobbies/thinkings..... And this song reminds you to clarify the real you of the fake you, because if you don't, you fall and it's hard to climb the wreck you falled in
Honestly, BOTH videos are great, but I think I like the animated one more.... It just has more of a punch in my eyes.

They would help me move on and help me feel like I’m not alone. Thank you Shinedown for all you guys do! You mean a lot to me!
Every awesome band has a song named "Monsters," and they're all bangers.
From just what my head made up first, is that this dude has so many problems in his head, and people are afraid because to them he seems threatening, when he's really just upset with the things in his head. The elevator being two people arguing for both having horrid things, and the realization being he finds a reason to try.
Why the hell does this song somehow fits perfectly in my personality?
I have never been so confused of an animation in my life. I'm intrigued.
I have a theory of what it's showing, but it's just a theory
You're missing out a lot of animation then
He starts off "normal". The masks represent the masks that everyone constructs for themselves: their alternate persona, if you will.
When he gets to the "bar", he starts having a breakdown, as shown by him drowning. He is metaphorically dying under the weight of his inner demons.
When he gets saved by the other people, it's symbolising how anyone can help others get over their problems: they're saving him from himself.
That's my interpretation, anyway
Alcoholism
GlitchyPikachu thats a really good explanation
Shinedown is the best
We all fight our monsters. This song is important to those of us to suffer from severe depression, but our co-workers (for instance) never know.
I've connected all the dots. Every new song in the past 5 years have a timeline of messages. Even furthering if you're really paying attention. Smith and Myers. You've warned us. You have explained the direction, the intention, and the back story. Using your craft to put the perspective into focus. Simplifying it so we can all understand. Understood gentlemen. Thank you. If none of you understand my words. Just go back , listen to previous music. Listen to Smith and Myers. They have a powerful message if your brain works right. I wish there was a way that we could talk. But regular guys like myself don't get opportunities like that. But I appreciate the warnings. Stay safe. God bless us all.
Could you break this one down for us bud?
@@SoulToLose I'll try my best. There is a spiritual war happening right now. Good and evil, dark and light. In every war there is warriors(God's chosen) and demons. These guys are warriors. They make it important to inform us the listeners that there is more to our world than lead to believe. In this instance, the monsters they are referring to are the demons. Their real. So they're telling them good for you. You fooled everybody. But us. In the song the devil, their referencing that the devil is right beside you. They're telling us what to look for and how to determine it. Shinedown is one of the few real musicians left out here. They're message is strong if your listening. Keep your ears open. Call a doctor, say a prayer, choose a god you think is fair. I hope you understand what I'm telling you. God bless. Stay safe.
@@patshaw6165 interesting interpretation. Thank you for sharing.
Putting on a mask to show your happy so others won't have to worry but your true emotions eat you up inside and makes you feel like you're drowning and yet when you finally break those emotions come out like monsters. The ones who truly know you are there to help you from drowning in all that negative emotion. I know this all too well because I have experience since birth yet until recently I've just been drowning all my life.
A perfect presentation of how people are fighting with their inner demons in every part of life
This video fits the motif a lot more than the one about the soldiers.
We all have masks one for strangers one for friends another for family and the last is what you truly feel

Nah man, that shit will haunt you forever. The trick is not learning to live without your monsters, it's to live alongside them.
Yeah, you never get rid of the depression. All you do is learn to fight it and how to take the mask off. I've lost my fight many times without deadly results. I've just now gotten the support I need to climb out of the pit. Good luck in your war man, don't give up on yourself, others won't.
This song means so much to me, it really shows the demons that are real in people. My dad was a very bad alcoholic and I witnessed at a very young age that alcohol is a mask to hide everything. My dad is now 3 years sober and our family is finally a family again.

My son is 9years old and music is a huge part of his life. He has a very eccentric play list his love for music has got him through some horrific events in his short life. The other day the radio was on and this song came on and he sat in the back seat and sang this song with a fierceness. I pulled over so I could watch him. When it was over he looked at me and said that song explains how I feel alot of the time. I'm sorry I'm not normal! With air pulled out of me, the only response I could was was, baby what is Hell is NORMAL? Normal is boring! Normal is afraid to live free. . Always be the weird, be wild, and most importantly evey chance you get dance in the rain. As for your monsters, we all have them, some live with them and other live in fear of them. You surpass them. Thank you & Blessed Be to you all!
This song makes me feel every time my father hit me and made me get back up and take another one but all he would say is it makes you a man, it will toughen you up but you know what I got from that was a differnt outlook on life and depression so I'm glad there's tons of bands that can help people like me to just enjoy the lyrics and make us feel like we matter and understood cause that's one thing I believe most of us deal with is will people understand me. I love all of the other interpretations but I have a little extra to throw in (sorry if someone else already shared this) I think the masks are showing literally the masks we wear, the true more vulnerable part underneath it all. When he passes out his own monster comes for him and he realizes he showed people who he really is and exposed his feelings. His unfiltered words and sentiments drove everyone else to don their own masks and now he's left emotionally naked while everyone else hides themselves from him.
Really shown in "Good for you, you love no one" etc. Like you're tough and nothing can get to you, but congrats it comes at a cost from those around you.
im past the point of being lost, and i feel as if its all past me, but for some reason whenever this song comes on it hurts again, it makes me look back apon myself and wish that I hadn't done some of what I have done, and it makes me feel that I still have so far to go, its just such a strait to the face replied to my still stumbling emotions, which are just all over the place, I'm so glad I'm past the point of fearing the monsters I hide, and that I'm at a point were I can face them and slowly but surely tame them, I doubt id ever be able to fully get rid of them, but I do know that I'll no longer have to live in fear of them
Love the animation here and it represents the everyday struggles we face on a daily basis and how they may haunt us for the rest of our lives. We sometimes give up and let out demons control us. Don’t let your monsters and demons control your body and you have to pay the price for it. Demons can do damage to our lives and everything else goes downhill.

Depression is winning and im losing
Stay strong brother
This has been me for the last 15 years. A constant battle with myself stemmed from depression and suicidal thoughts. This song helps me cope with it.
Having lived with Depression for as long as I can remember of my near-35 year life, I can say that the masks are absolutely a thing. In interviews with doctors and other people who have helped build and form my supports, I often described myself as "putting on a mask" when I had to face the world for whatever reason, be it school, or a job, or even just meeting with friends and loved ones.
I wish I could say this album got me through a really painful time in my life, but the truth is it just helped me cope in between the anger and misery.

I think we all fight depression in some way or another. Toss in ptsd, nightmares and night terrors, you could be describing the aftermath of any number of situations that exist today. I came across a meme on Facebook today that I think fits this song and why it's so powerful. It's by JM Storm and goes: Sometimes we don't want to heal because the pain is the last link to what we've lost.
Maybe that's part of what the song is trying to tell us. I'll leave that up to you to decide.

A fantastic song. I saw the lines to depression and other destructive inner forces pretty well immediately. But upon multiple listenings, I have come to see it a different way. As someone who has always had to restrain myself because of my potential for harm, I see it as a really good rule for everyone. Don't be quick to conflict if you can help it. You never know what monster hides behind the face of a calm man.

Personally, I always liked thinking of this song in terms of some of the darker Pokemon lore and the darker fan-fiction settings, where you aren't an innocent child taking in cute little creatures as adorable pets, but instead you're a hardened soldier barely reining in violent bloodthirsty monsters under your iron-fisted strength of will.
Me and my 5 yr old love it
. Looking under our bed for monsters when we realize that they were inside of us
nah mate they aren't inside of us they are us
Im14andthisisdeep
as children we look for monsters under our beds.
as adults, we realize they're inside our heads.
Wow, amazing and powerful video!
"Trained how to deal"...like the little things that are done to handle depression but they never heal the problem
Heck yes
