I buy most of my crafting stuff at estate sales, I got nearly all my crochet/tatting hooks, good yarn in various fibers, literal POUNDS of fabric in huge yardage, I use that for mock ups and then use the mock ups as lining or cut up into stuffing! Plus it’s a tenth the price of going to joanns, usually $1 a yard or less.
I still dream of my biggest thrift haul...a huge garbage bag of yarn for ~$15 local currency. So many cotton blends and soft baby yarns, with some balls worth more than the bag itself. I was so excited taking that bag home
I briefly worked at a goodwill. It’s shocking how many people shoplift. I understand if somebody was taking essential clothes but it’s often grab bag or wares stuff.
I’m jelly! Here in Japan, all of the sewing shops have the same 20-something patterns. Most of them haven’t changed in the last three years I spent in Nagoya alone. Despite this, the stores have amazing selections for sewing and craft supplies. The attention to detail. You can even customise zippers; choose one colour for one side, another colour for the other, and yet another colour for the zipper pull. That’s just one example. I haven’t had much luck finding craft supplies in the thrift stores yet. Generally, my go-to place for thrifting is Book Off/Hard Off/Hard Off, or any one of their sister stores. Other thrifting places like in Harajuku or Osu-Kannon for example, are kind of shameless with their markups. 4,500 yen for shirts that were obviously bought at Goodwill, and brought over at a huge markup. But don’t give up! Keep looking, and you’ll eventually find the things you’re looking for.
I'd love to see some of your home made lace on a video! That's so cool! I'm somewhat of a lace hoarder because I love it but it's so delicate I don't want to waste it or damage it, so I end up locating some and just keeping it forever.
I also like admiring my lace collection and letting my supplies inspire me, so you aren't alone in that. 😂 I haven't done a lot of craft supply thrifting as of late just due to availability of supplies, but I used to get lots of notions and patterns as well as fabric a couple of times from my local thrift store as a teen. I still have zippers that I got years ago that're quite handy when I randomly decide to make something at midnight and realize I need a zipper for that... I still remember this one terrible elasticated lace I got at the thrift store though that left residue on everything, even after washing it multiple times. And it was black too, so super noticeable on all my other lace. 😂
Lol, I find a lot of stuff at op shops, forget that I have them, then find them later and get inspired to do the intended project, or something completely different. What I'm terrible for is buying art supplies just to hoard them
I love Evelyn Wood series, Isn't she the kindest soft teacher and adviser? ^^ I don't have big thrift stores that sell everything like there so I try to hunt markets where they sell like deadstock from old stores that closed down or flea markets. I'm starting to find here and there sewing books... but the patterns until now no luck, maybe I need to invoke the stitchess powers in my thrift journeys xD Can't wait to see that bright yellow lace coming up^^ looks like a very sunflower shade ^^ the crunchy lace would look very cute as ruffles on a bag or even a straw hat ^^ I loved this video, and it's true, is one of the reasons I barely shop at supplies stores, the cost ends up so high that I may as well take a more cheap and sustainable approach.
We Stan kind soft teachers ^-^ also can we just talk about how much the QUALITY at craft supply stores has degraded? I go out of my way to avoid new supplies because they just *feel* cheaper (even tho they’re way more expensive???)
@@TheStitchess Ah yes, you aren't wrong. If I want good quality supplies I kinda have to dig old, old little haberdashery shops that still have more antique things. Problem with that... is the prices sometimes but worth the digging if you have some nearby
70s dresses are my absolute favourites! It's a shame that this kind of pattern isn't really a thing here in Spain/Europe, it's way easier to find sewing magazines(the most famous one is called Burda) that release every few months with patterns for whatever is on trend(or what they ~think~ is on trend, they're not that spot on). I think my grandma still has some of them from like late 70s/early-to-mid 80s, and she told me she's teaching me how to sew this summer when the whole Corona situation is over and we can meet again!

The BEST vintage fabrics are at estate sales!

for the lace at 9:35 (if you still have it) you could probably use it for scallops, i think that would look so cute!

My small town has a lovely thrift store, but all of their money goes towards an openly homophobic church, I am a closeted lesbian...
Oh that sucks. Hope you're doing well, fellow gay.
this was a really fun video! creative reuse stores are also really great for finding craft/sewing supplies!!!
We used to have a store like that a long time ago but it went out of business :/
The Stitchess ;0; what a bummer! hopefully another one opens someday!
You lost weight 😳 I'm jealous 😂🙈
