-In general, gorillas live 35 years in the wild. In captivity they get better food, medical care and have no predators. Life expectancy can range from 50-60 years.
GORILLA CONSERVATION - one of the easiest things you can do to help gorillas is to recycle your old cell phone or other hand held electronic device. Recycling electronics helps support gorilla conservation programs. Cell phones and other electronics contain a mineral called coltan (it is short for columbite-tantalite). 80% of the world’s Coltan is mined in central Africa, which is wild gorilla habitat. Forests are being strip mined for this highly sought after mineral, with illegal mining even taking place in protected gorilla areas. BUT! Coltan is reusable! Clear out that old cell phone drawer! Our hope is, that the more and more electronic devices are recycled, this can slow demand for new Coltan to be mined in Africa.
Some estimates report gorilla populations have declined 25% in the past 20-25 years.
Kayembe was the first zoo born gorilla at the Cleveland Zoo.
Kunda is the second baby born in Cleveland in less then 2 years.
Jameela is the first baby gorilla born via c-section at the Fort Worth Zoo.
Birthdates: Mokolo 7/10/87, Fredrika 6/5/74, N'neka 9/23/98, Kebi 1/13/91/ Tusa 12/2/89, and Kayembe 10/26/21, Kunda 7/19/23, and Jameela 1/5/24.
The Conservation status of the Western Lowland gorilla is “Critically Endangered”.

I just love Kayambe! He’s probably the most entertaining to watch at the zoo! He’s a toddler and full of energy. He’s so feisty and rambunctious! And daring to slap at dad! 😂 Jameela is what brought me here. I still love her and I have fallen in love with her new family. Especially her brother! He’s a character! Truly a gem for Cleveland. 😊❤

I heard she is 50 years old. I'm told in the wild they hardly reach that age, but in captivity, they can live up 60 years old. I think a female gorilla just died who was sixty or close to it.I think a male gorilla just died around that age as well.Usually, the zoo's put them to sleep because of health issues.

I LOVE hearing the excitement of children when they are talking about the gorillas. Just gives me a little hope that this species will still be ok long after we are gone. I greatly anticipate the look on Kayembe's face when Mokolo gives chase after his infamous "tag, you it" slaps! The speed at which he would run to Freddy would be astounding! lol Also wanted to mention the GREAT photos and selections in the store as I made my first purchases! Glad to see getting rewarded for your hard work so far!

Jameela is younger than Kunda but more advanced, I think its because Freddie lets Jameela explore and she is not constantly right behind her
While Jameela is the same size as Kunda she does not have the same strength or coordination that Kunda has. She HAS benefitted by Freddy’s more relaxed style letting her explore often. Jameela has also benefitted from getting formula from the keepers for her first 3 months and then supplemental bottle feedings since being with Freddy, while Kebi has not allowed bottle feeding for Kunda. Why don't Jameela and Kunda ever play together?
Kunda tries to play with Jameela but her mom, Kebi, (or Freddy) stops her when she can. Jameela is still getting her coordination established. She will be able to play soon.
Does Kayembe stop at all?
🤣 yes , sometimes.
Fredi is more confident with Jameela and keeping Kayembe off of her. Sort of.

Can they hear the people that is there
Yes, they can hear the people. The gorillas generally ignore the people. The only exceptions I see are Kebi and Mokolo. Those two are the gorillas most likely to stare at the people.
please more Kunda focused videos. I love the Jameela videos, but it seems that Jameela, has taken over and we see less and less of Kunda. Is it just me?
Kebi took her to the hammock and you can’t see them, especially since they were at nap time. He records Iunda as much as Kebi allows and if it’s quite Kebi will hang out more but if there’s lots of visitor noise Kebi will go to hammock or the privacy area/quarter’s they have when they don’t want to be around visitors. Gorilla’s aren’t big into noise but some get more use to it but Kebi not so much.

Tusa seems to be happier when she is left alone. If you are lowest in hierarchy - being left alone is safe I guess.
I might have missed it but do you know if Kay is being weaned ? I don’t see him nursing much
I just saw him nurse yesterday (7/29/24) I think it’s more for comfort or jealousy than for nutrition.

I believe Tusa chooses to be left alone. Reminder she is the smallest adult and the last to join the troop. That is a recipe for being the lowest in a hierarchy. Although, We would like to see her appear happier.

Kayembe is too young to lose his adoptive mother, Freddy. He needs more nursing, teaching and lovely cares...but Freddy is in charge with Jameela now. Kayembe was left behind by Freddy! It’s not good for his futur behaviour...

You say kayembe is just playing but he is pouncing and trouncing them little ones. The staff needs to work harder and teaching him to be nice. He’s gonna kill Jameela before the years out if He keeps it up. See how she’s desperately trying to get to her mom to get away from him. I don’t find that funny.
Her momma is right there… I’ll let momma gorilla manage that. Staff has cameras to check on the baby when needed.
