- GWR City 4-4-0 3440 'City of Truro' returned to the mainline for just 1 year in 2004 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of it attaining a speed of over 100 mph down Whiteball bank on 9 May 1904, the first loco to achieve such a feat. She is seen across 2 trips, the off train shots were taken on 8 May, her first mainline run since overhaul, and the 4-4-0 is seen at Cogload junction, Whiteball and cruising along the famous sea wall at Dawlish. The onboard shots were taken on her 3rd from last public mainline and feature Whiteball, Dainton, Tigley and Rattery banks.
Sorry about the typo in the first title, it should read 'Bristol - Plymouth' not London-Plymouth
Even if she never steams again, I'm just glad she was able to be in steam for the 100th anniversary of her legendary record.
He did it, I’ll do it! He did it, I’ll do it!
She's been overhauled and let out many times since the late '50s. A very fast and lively girl. I only once have been pulled by her (Severn Valley). I'd love to have seen her filling in on normal duies on the Didcot Newbury and Southampton. So sad to see her 'stuffed' in York now.
Yes it would have been quite a sight! It is sadly.
I hope she steams again. Passing the pannier tank, it was like duck saw Turo passing by
Thats what i was thinking too! The pannier was so excited to meet Truro, the whistle exchange was so cute! You could almost hear the excitement in the tank engines whistle!
Amazing video, good record of events. I hope we get to see 3440/3717 run again.
Thanks, yes we live in hope!
The issue is: that she has serious frame stress cracking, leaking tubes and a failure hole in her #2 stay on her firebox. The NRM decided on the best course that she bow out as she needed a full overhaul but that means loosing each component which related to her 1957 overhaul which was the very last time a Swindon locomotive of the companies pride was overhauled.
As train loads get bigger and bigger, the locomotive is not suited for the preservation loadings which lets be realistic, the locomotive is well over 117 years old by 2020 standards and is the last of her class. It would be argued that a replica of a lost member would be suited to keep the City tradition flying until advancements in locomotive conservation to repair the issues.
@@Cinesound01 I meant more running on heritage railways, she will never go mainline again.
@@Cinesound01 I recall that even in late BR days, Swindon 'just happened' to have a spare boiler.
Super nice video :)
Thanks!
He Did It, I'll Do It!
Never trust domeless engines.
They aren’t respectable.
Terry Sykes.
Hi there, many thanks for posting this video. The highlight is the onboard footage of "Truro" topping Dainton summit at 35mph ! In 1964 "The Great Western" railtour was run with great fanfair to commemorate the 60th birthday of Truro's 100mph record speed. A Castle class locomotive with seven coaches and two firemen ran through Newton Abbot at almost 60mph, and then was driven flat out up Dainton summit. The castle was much applauded for topping the summit at 27 mph?? I have just written a booklet on city of Truro called "The Whole Story" And would very much like to send you a copy as a thankyou for posting this video. Would you be kind enough to give me a ring on. 07887 840447. Regards and best wishes, Terry.
