Thanks very much. Since I released the video it was decided that the loco would be overhauled for another spell of mainline running which is currently under way
Austin, your ciné film at the beginning along with the well chosen music have added so much to this affectionate retrospective. The most striking sequences, to me anyway, are at 03:30, 07:00 and 09:30 but I thoroughly enjoyed every minute, thank you. I don't know the vintage of your Abergele shot, but what a refreshing change to see such a disciplined and unselfish group of photographers on the platform, not one of them intruding on another's shot. My only personal sighting(s) of 'Ollie' would have been pre-1963, probably at Liverpool Street and/or Stratford, and unfortunately never in preservation. Interesting to note that, by inference, you are my senior by one year! Kind regards, Bob.
Thanks as ever for your kind comments Bob. The Abergele shot was August 2011 (how time passes!) and the scene has changed a bit there now with the centre line being removed. Ollie was the loco that 'reintroduced' me to steam after trainspotting days and I was fortunate to go on a couple of railtours with her in 1967/8. As for age, well 70 beckons this year, which is a strange feeling, certainly don't feel 70 or act accordingly!
Such a pity this absolutely gorgeous locomotive is out of service. Really hope we'll be able to welcome her back on the lines again in a couple of years! Fantastic tribute.
Absolutely wonderful, we were lucky enough to get pulled by her on Christmas Eve with the Santa Express on GCR just a few days before she went out of service, very emotional and thanks for taking the trouble to put together this wonderful collection.
A wonderful tribute to my favourite Brit Austin, In April 1968 had a wonderful day out behind her on a round Lancashire Tour, had a footplate ride when she was at Bessingham, captured her a few time on her travels, and I have an 00 Gauge model of her on my layout...Wonderful!!
Thanks Bob. I wonder if we were on the same tour in 1968 as I did a couple at that time including one that went around Lancashire before finishing at Carnforth. She is a special loco and we can but hope that she will run again and not just be stuffed and mounted or maybe the NRM plan to give her away like they've done with other exhibits!
The tour I was on started at Stockport Edgeley and went over Copy Pit, Preston, Accrington to name just a few....I think I've sent you a photo of it at Accrington Austin.
Excellent tribute to a fantastic Loco. One of my favourites. I fell in love with her after travelling behind her on the ML several times when she returned to steam in 2008. A really superb performer. Let's hope that she does return to action in the future.
Great tribute to a magnificent loco. Happy memories of it working on the Eastern between Liverpool Street, through my home town, so hope it's back up and running again soon.
Thanks very much Steve, fingers crossed that the overhaul will be authorised. The trouble is that finding mainline work for single locos like Ollie and the Duchess for example is becoming more difficult with West Coast, Saphos and Vintage Trains all having their own fleets of locomotives and not needing to hire in another
It is a real shame she has gone. We had her last year to enjoy at the KWVR Spring Gala of 2018 and her firebox was so rusty. Her pony truck looked like it had seen better days as well. I really do miss that chime
Yes, I enjoyed seeing her at the KWVR last year and managed to get some shots in sunshine. It seems as though the GCR are going to be the new custodians of the loco and I really hope that we will see her in action once again
acw71000 whilst I agree it would have been great to capture working steam with modern equipment, speaking for myself I love watching old school film clips. Full of atmosphere, so evocative.
Born in 1969 I never saw a full size steam locomotive until June 2014, when 70013 Oliver Cromwell visited Seaford, East Sussex, celebrating the Seaford 150. I waited at the station and could not believe my eyes and ears as this huge living breathing monster approached the station! So 70013 is the first steam engine I've seen and been able to appreciate. Of course now I'm hooked. Here is a photo I took just as it arrived: flic.kr/p/nTVJDP Thanks for the wonderful video. Simon
Excellent work here Austin! I loved every minute of it! 😍 Let's hope NRM pull their proverbial fingers out and get Cromwell overhauled somewhere ASAP. My only experience with this engine was back in August at the GCR and my first train ride of the weekend. I remember him barking out of Quorn and Woodhouse. The driver gave it Cromwell a bit more power and he responded with a sharper bark up the stack! From then on I was hooked on this engine!
Excellent footage Austin, sad to see Oliver Cromwell is out of service and hopefully not too long before is heard on the national network again. Regards James
Very nice retrospective, which goes back to 1968, Austin. I hope that a solution will be found so that this beautiful machine continues to roll for many years. Philippe
Excellent footage as always Austin, particularly the atmospheric shots in the mist on the GCR. Let's hope common sense prevails and it isn't too long before we hear that distinctive 2 cylinder beat on the main line again.
What a fine collection of clips especially the ones on Shap and Ais Gill and I liked your comment on TheStephenGThompson's latest shot of 48151 it would look good in black-and-white wonder if it can be done...
Thanks for watching. The location you mention is Olive Mount Cutting, Liverpool. It's not as good now since electrification between Liverpool and Manchester
Used to see here when I was a “train spotter” on a cold Colchester North way back when she was in regular service. This year I talked to the driver of the Deltic that was on the back of the Harry Potter train, Fort William to Malag he used to drive Britannia class locos, said fireman loved them because the boiler was very efficient.
In some cases, yes, the diesel is used for generating electricity. In times of high fire risk, the diesel will assist when necessary. The diesel can be used at the terminal station to shunt the stock rather than the steam loco doing it. None of these are popular with lovers of pure steam of course but it's often the price that has to be paid in order for steam to continue running in the 21st.century.
Very much so Heinz. She was the last Pacific loco in British Railways service and was one of the four locos used on the 'End of Steam' railtour on August 11th.1968
This is a wonderfully moving tribute to a magnificent engine.
Thanks very much. Since I released the video it was decided that the loco would be overhauled for another spell of mainline running which is currently under way
@@acw71000 Oh that's such good news. The Britannias have a fabulous sound and are perhaps my absolute favourite (though it's a tough call, that 😊

Thanks very much, she will certainly be missed
A fitting tribute to a grand young loco. Many tks. Del.
Many thanks, really hope we see her again

My pleasure, thanks for watching

Many thanks. She does hold a special place in railway history after being involved with the end of steam in 1968
Great tribute to a magnificent loco. Happy memories of it working on the Eastern between Liverpool Street, through my home town, so hope it's back up and running again soon.
Thank you. It would be a great shame if such an iconic loco never steamed again
You have made a fitting tribute to this wonderful Loco Austin...Just hope it get's the Overhaul it needs......Steve.
Thanks very much Steve, fingers crossed that the overhaul will be authorised. The trouble is that finding mainline work for single locos like Ollie and the Duchess for example is becoming more difficult with West Coast, Saphos and Vintage Trains all having their own fleets of locomotives and not needing to hire in another
Oliver Cromwell is such a beautiful locomotive ❤️ and what a amazing tribute for it too
Thanks, I really hope that I'm going to be able to film her again
acw71000 I hope so. I haven’t seen her in person. I live near Manchester
It is a real shame she has gone. We had her last year to enjoy at the KWVR Spring Gala of 2018 and her firebox was so rusty. Her pony truck looked like it had seen better days as well. I really do miss that chime

A fitting tribute Austin to a fantastic loco. Great memories. Thanks for the posting. Kind regards C&A
Thanks a lot, really hope to see her again someday
Great tribute to a fine locomotive hope it is just adios and not goodbye
Thank you. I hope so too
Cracking video!
Wild to me to see what Windermere used to look like, my local station.
Thanks, yes Windermere has gone through a few changes, probably not many for the better!
Excellent tribute to ‘Ollie’ Austin. Regards, Dave.
Thanks Dave, a special loco that hopefully will be seen in action again
Lovely video, Austin especially seeing the 60s clips.
Thank you. If only we'd had the cameras that we have now back in the 60's!
acw71000 whilst I agree it would have been great to capture working steam with modern equipment, speaking for myself I love watching old school film clips. Full of atmosphere, so evocative.
Wonderful compilation!
Many thanks, glad you enjoyed it

Thanks for the wonderful video. Simon
Thanks for watching Simon, nice photograph of Ollie at Seaford. See one steam loco and you're hooked for life...be warned!
Austin, thanks for sharing this wonderful video, it must have been a sad day for you to see her to go, Happy New Year to you and your family,
Many thanks John and best wishes to yourself and family for 2019

Thanks very much for your comments. That Britannia bark is pretty special and I do hope the loco is allowed another spell on the mainline
Excellent footage Austin, sad to see Oliver Cromwell is out of service and hopefully not too long before is heard on the national network again. Regards James
Thanks James, bit frightening to realise how long ago my love affair with Ollie began! Really hope an overhaul is authorized
Class footage as ever Austin, hope we see her again and for me the Roaring Monster tour on Shap still sends shivers down my back 👍
Thanks Steve, yes, that was a special day and really hope we get the chance to see Ollie in action again
Very nice retrospective, which goes back to 1968, Austin. I hope that a solution will be found so that this beautiful machine continues to roll for many years. Philippe
Merci Philipp, j'espère vraiment que la loco pourra être restaurée, c'est un de mes grands favoris
I shall miss Ollie C. The first steam Loco that I had a short footplate ride on about 45 years ago. Have been behind her many times since.
Yes, she will definitely be missed. It was one of the first locos I travelled behind back in the Sixties
Excellent footage as always Austin, particularly the atmospheric shots in the mist on the GCR. Let's hope common sense prevails and it isn't too long before we hear that distinctive 2 cylinder beat on the main line again.
Many thanks Peter, the NRM moves in strange ways these days but hopefully 70013 will steam again
She makes light work of 12 coaches - what an epic machine!
Indeed, let us hope tha we see her again on the mainline
Magnifique !
Merci beaucoup
Salute the loco that rocked: Mournful Whistle and the Big Beat
Lets hope we can hear that whistle again live and not just on video!
What a fine collection of clips especially the ones on Shap and Ais Gill and I liked your comment on TheStephenGThompson's latest shot of 48151 it would look good in black-and-white wonder if it can be done...
Many thanks David. I've mentioned again to Steve about a black and white version of his shot of 48151 so here's hoping!
I hope so too!
great video lets hope for a good outcome
Thank you. Yes, hopefully she will steam again
Lovely job. What location is that at 10:32??
Thanks for watching. The location you mention is Olive Mount Cutting, Liverpool. It's not as good now since electrification between Liverpool and Manchester

Thanks for watching, the Brits are great locos and good to hear the crews loved them
Could somebody please tell me why a Diesel engine is stuck on the back of a steam locomotive. Is it for generating electricity for the carriages. ?
In some cases, yes, the diesel is used for generating electricity. In times of high fire risk, the diesel will assist when necessary. The diesel can be used at the terminal station to shunt the stock rather than the steam loco doing it. None of these are popular with lovers of pure steam of course but it's often the price that has to be paid in order for steam to continue running in the 21st.century.
A friend of mine owns the 5 inch version of this lovely engine
How wonderful. He must be very proud of that
Let’s hope Ollie will once again shout at the rain
I hope so too, we'll see
Hello Austin, is there a special relation of UK steam loco fans to this impressive steam loco 'Oliver Cromwell'? - Greetings, Heinz
Very much so Heinz. She was the last Pacific loco in British Railways service and was one of the four locos used on the 'End of Steam' railtour on August 11th.1968
Thanks, Austin. I see there is an intensive emotional relation to 'Oliver Cromwell'.
