Climbing Mt. Baldy Bowl in Winter

  • Mt. Baldy Bowl is a Southern California hiking rite of passage. Hiking Mt. Baldy in winter offers climbers the choice of the standard Ski Hut trail OR the Baldy Bowl, which is essentially the Mt. Baldy mountaineer's route. While we have hiked Mt. Baldy in winter previously, this was our first time climbing the Baldy Bowl, and wow did it live up to the hype! Just please note that the Baldy Bowl is not a standard "hike" - mountaineering gear, prior experience, and careful monitoring of the conditions on Mt. Baldy are 100% crucial to safely attempting this climb.

      Hahaha yes! I think we were the only ones who glissaded that day, and the people going up def seemed jealous. Truth be told, they were starting too late in the day and I'm betting most of them didn't make it -- just too slushy when it gets warm, and once you start post-holing on the steep part you're cooked. ❤️

    What makes a video a good video? There are several characteristics that can transport a video from basic to compelling. They include audience relevance, great editing, valuable content, and a clear call to action. The most effective videos are ones that speak to a specific audience. Adam & Elise you’ve always covered these points to perfection.
    Your near future journeys will keep all of us listening.

    ELISE and ADAM a hello from France. A beautiful hike that is earned by getting up very early, and the climb was particularly difficult. I admit that I really like these video passages where ELISE's voice gives another dimension to the beautiful landscapes, it's an ode to nature and these are my favorite moments. Seeing you glide by, the climbers must have wondered who these two big kids are who are sliding happily in the snow. Once again ADAM you thwarted ELISE's trap, but I'm not sure if she was the one who placed that stone on your slide path, it doesn't look like her. Kisses to both of you. DAN
DAN

      Thanks very much! Yes the ascent was super steep going up the bowl, though we were lucky because conditions were perfect so it was actually quite nice. Hey, it was nice running into you up there.
    I ended up glissading down with my closed cell foam mattress. It survived the slide and my butt was comfortable most of the way down. However it has a lot of friction (from all the pockets?) so it was much slower than expected. I didn't need to brake much. Perfect for someone who is risk adverse but maybe next time I will find something smoother to spice it up.

    I did this climb about 25 years ago, without snow. I hiked up to the ski hut with plans to continue on the trail to the summit. Then I looked up the Bowl, and it looked doable. I was debating whether or not to do it, and then I thought, "what would John Muir do?" (I don't advise this as a way to make a decision, it would often lead to disaster!). So I chose the Bowl. All I remember thinking is "when will this ever end?" But finally it did, and I made it to the summit! I was worried that you guys might pick the wrong trail back (very easy to do up there in the snow), and even more worried when you decided to glissade back down the Bowl! But it turned out to be quite manageable. Thanks for this great video! I love Baldy! (BTW your theme song during the glissade scenes was very bad-ass!)

      Thanks David! That's very cool and super bold that you went up the bowl with no snow -- what a unique experience, and love the WWJMD philosophy of adventure! You're right about how easy it is to go wrong in the snow, and it's lucky we found the right tracks back or we might well have ended up somewhere we didn't want to. OMG! Grievous news! Is there a commemorative flavor? Did you not attend Mr. Post's services and beseech the family to take the reigns on QC? At stake here is the ecosystem of a subculture of mountaineers--or, at least, of a particular fan club.
    Nice glissade. (Adam has a pact with the mountain gods.)
    Not that I am a pro, but maybe when it is too cold to start cold, and you're hiking into full Sun, leg sleeves and arm sleeves are in order as the former can be rolled down and the latter pulled off on the fly. Of course, you were eventually returning to a warm car. But I could almost feel you ickiness.

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  3 місяці тому

      Oh my gosh that is a great idea -- they really should do some commemorative flavors. I would definitely be happy to consult, given that I believe I've tried pretty much every flavor ever made at least once! Leg and arm sleeves are perfect for biking and running, when you can't stop to take a shirt or jacket on or off, but not really needed for hiking since we take breaks all the time and can put on or take off layers whenever we want. The problem I had on this one was I didn't sunscreen my arms because I didn't expect this level of warmth, and I know from experience that if I go all the way to my short-sleeved base layer in sunny snow my arms will get burnt to a crisp! --A
