I lived in a heavily populated tourist area in the U.S., before I was priced out and forced to move from my home of 20 years. I am a working citizen, I paid taxes and supported my community and neighborhoods with care. I lived as a local, caring about people and the environment in my town. Tourism has taken a turn for the worse in the last decade, but especially since the pandemic. Tourism now dominates (and oppresses, gentrifies, displaces) the locals vs the locals running the tourists (earning economic support for locals while prioritizing economy profits for local community, not for the tourists to profit from or the wealthy elite). Yes, it is not only a responsibility of tourists to be responsible and respectful of the local people and environment especially by not attempting to displace or exploit them - but the responsibility equally lies with governments, laws and citizens having power to enact policies that protect against tourism industry’s exploitation of the local community. It lies with the CEOs, corporations and upper class wealthy people perpetuating exploitative practices of tourism that gentrify areas, jack up prices and housing and COL costs and inevitably displace the local people as a crude contemporary form of recolonization. I miss my home - I care about my community and my friends and family there. I miss myculture that is being replaced by techbro nonsense and airbnbs, and chains from CA and TX. I miss my small local community and restaurants. I miss knowing and caring for my neighbors. I just want to go back home and be allowed to afford to live there with an average salary. No more middle/working class in my town - all priced out. Just like SF, CA it’s extreme wealth disparity of only millionaires and homeless people live here now. I miss my home and real local culture. I love my community. I’m a good hardworking contributing neighbor and citizen. Why cant I go home?
So are the Spanish going to be barred from holidaying in the UK now. Or is it one way only as usual when it comes to this kind of stuff involving the British?
Britain is managing the problem in a different way. Firstly planning permission and building use prevents many of the problems. Then there is the recent clampdown on private short term let's (Air BnB). So, no, Spanish won't be barred from holidaying here, just that we won't fall into the trap of rampant tourism capitists.
Then do we move onto foreign workers keeping wages low? Esp in rural and tourist areas here. Same problems perpetuated by economic profit being placed disproportionately above quality of life, social mobility of the local population and lack of other industry investment.

I am 52 and have been visiting Mallorca since I was 14. I now go there at least 4 times per year. I think that the actions of the protestors are equal to turkeys voting for Christmas. It's also completely obvious that the tourists are not to blame for the issues being experienced by "the locals". There is a global cost of living crisis and I have no doubt that this is a big factor in this situation. It's probably easy for "the locals" to blame the tourists because they appear to have lots of money to spend but most of those same tourists are experiencing the same cost of living crisis and problems at home yet they are trying their best to give their family a good holiday and maintain as much normality as possible but I am confident that it's not easy. I genuinely think that "the locals" perception of the tourists financial situation is completely wrong, not least because people always spend more money whilst on holiday than they do normally. I have read many articles on this and (because I am familiar with this island) I really need to question exactly who "the locals" are because in my experience, this island is full of immigrants and most of them have gone there in search of work and the hope of a better life. But most of them haven't been there so long themselves yet somehow feel very entitled. I have also spoken with some of those people who have now left the island and returned to their native country because things weren't working out financially. Maybe more of this needs to happen too! If you review the price of property purchase in Mallorca, you will realise that prices are sky high. I am seeing ruins for prices well in excess of €250k and apartments in respectable parts of Palma starting at this kind of price. I have to consider that much of the property in Mallorca is owned by Mallorcans who are really cashing in! It's abundantly clear that there's lots and lots of money being made in Mallorca from property rental (including hotels) and property sales. It's not the tourists making the money! The tourists are supplying it! and people should be grateful! Clearly there's a problem with the distribution of wealth but again, that's not the tourists fault. Mallorca will not survive without the tourists this is a guaranteed fact! If the British and German tourists stop going, everywhere will close, people will lose their jobs and they will be begging the tourists to return. Maybe this needs to happen now because this behaviour towards innocent tourists is absolutely appalling! If you have gone here in search of a better life and it's not working out, you should go home and stop complaining. If there's not enough workers to cope with the tourists, the tourists won't go. Simple! I intend to stop going!
Wow. This sounds like a really good take on a complex situation. I also fear that there are elitist elements at the centre of these seemingly ‘grassroots’ protests.
@@dougaltolan3017I'm not suggesting the locals can afford it I'm merely pointing out that Mallorcans are seriously trying to cash in! I'm also pretty certain that most of the tourists can't afford it either! Also, the prices for apartments in Palma probably don't differ that much from most of the good areas of other big European cities but there seems to be many cases where Mallorcans are just setting ridiculous sale prices themselves and probably because they're not that bothered about selling but will sell if it's really well worth their while to do so. Mallorcans don't need to sell or rent to tourists at all! This is a choice well within their personal control. So if they feel so strongly.......

Although I am Spanish and Portuguese, with hundreds of family in Tenerife and spread out on the mainland, I am still a tourist when I visit. I wouldn't want to feel unwelcome. I try to stay with family, and I have stayed at accommodations booked through RCI. The problem is housing, for these families. I feel they are also protesting towards their government, and rightly so, in hopes that changes are made to provide for the needs of their citizens, and not sell their homes and communities to foreigners. They love their culture in Spain, and it has changed in many areas. People come and disrespect the culture and cause a lot of trouble, especially the drinking age teens. I have seen it happen. They behave like savages.
Tourists are usually drunken idiots. Immigrants come to work, and having travelled and lived in other countries half my life I would be more inclined to give the latter a break, and a much needed one at that.
I can understand and have empathy with them. Capitalism has drowned out the needs of the local people. It's surprising to see protests against British tourists in Spain, given its history of welcoming visitors. The frustration likely stems from some tourists' repetitive and disruptive behavior. However, British travelers have the privilege of a strong passport and currency, opening doors to countless destinations. Consider Kenya: with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and unique wildlife, it offers a refreshing alternative to the typical Spanish holiday. Exploring new destinations like Kenya not only enriches the travel experience but also alleviates the burden on over-touristed spots. It's time to embrace new adventures and broaden travel horizons.

It’s the same for our holiday resorts, Cornwall, The Lakes etc. the locals can’t afford the house prices and many houses are holiday lets. Many of the shops seem to be run by wealthy folks that have moved in from other counties. Seems it’s a case of can’t live with them can’t live without them. Definitely needs some sort of regulation but the local councils are greedy for the revenue that tourism brings in.
Just wait for the knock on effects of people in the tourists business, jobs lost bars and hotel closures and shops banks the there taxis buses trains. The unemployment will go through the roof. Then on top of that people producing food and drink will go out of business.

Enough is enough; out of control tourism is ruining the quality of life for locals around the world. Tourism is great and enjoyed by many and bolsters economies but there is a reasonable limit and we need to respect the lives of the people living in these communities. I hope the Spanish government and governments in tourism targets around the world are paying attention and are prepared to make changes allowing reasonable levels of tourism while protecting their citizens.

Actually Mallorca get more than a third of their annual GDP from tourism and nearly a third of jobs relate to it.. The Balearic Islands shattered a tourism revenue record in 2023. So it's going to take an economic wiz to actually work out if the Mallorcans would be better off without it? There's no doubt there would be great need to replace it with something fairly quickly if reigning back tourism else it's likely they may be much worse off by dilution or quick fixes.
Come on its the same in uk house prices in holiday areas are overpriced for locals. Tourists bring lot of money i dont agree with all inclusive as it gives money to travel company not local people. The government should introduce certain laws to balance out
I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened earlier! Unfortunately, not many locals benefit from tourism....it's mainly the big businesses. I think anyone who lives in a popular tourism spot, in whichever part of the world, will feel the same!
So let me get it right if the tourist stop coming then these communities will die any way ? So what is the point I don't understand ? Do they want to limit tourists or stop them owning second homes there ?
No they will lose 20% of the local income. But in return their homes will be more affordable and services will get better. It's the same deal as reform voters and immigrant scapegoating. Totally misplaced anger.
It is obvious they are not looking after their own people and they are allowing developers to ruin the environment. Also, I have often been embarrassed by the behaviour of British tourists abroad, who are often obnoxious. It is the rich getting richer and the poor poorer again. We have the same here to a degree in the West Country where locals cannot afford to buy property. I am British, but I do sympathise with their view.

My daughter lives in Mallorca and she told me what local want is steady stream of tourists, but the numbers are going through the roof specially in summer, and then there is water shortage due to so many pools .

Britain is managing the problem in a different way.
Firstly planning permission and building use prevents many of the problems.

So, no, Spanish won't be barred from holidaying here, just that we won't fall into the trap of rampant tourism capitists.

I've spent many thousands of pounds over the years holidaying in Mallorca and Menorca. If they don't want my money, I'll go elsewhere. Croatia for me this time!
For a number of reasons I have not yet booked my 2024 holiday. However, I am about to do so, and my choice *was* going to be Tenerife. *NOT NOW*
I am 52 and have been visiting Mallorca since I was 14.
Well said, you explain it very well and eloquently. They don't want tourists, then so be it.

@@dougaltolan3017I'm not suggesting the locals can afford it I'm merely pointing out that Mallorcans are seriously trying to cash in! I'm also pretty certain that most of the tourists can't afford it either! Mallorcans don't need to sell or rent to tourists at all! This is a choice well within their personal control. So if they feel so strongly.......

So true haha. My aunt and uncle were so proud that they went to the same hotel (on the yellow brick road there) 50 times! The hotel has a picture of them framed on their wall!
😂😂😂
Dont go there, dont spend your money there
I know a few people that have never been to Barcelona and they have booked since these protests! Including myself. It’s beautiful apparently and these protests are rare.
The protesters basically advertised the place 😂
Eastern Europe is meant to be beautiful & cheaper.
We hear you loud and clear our Spanish friends 🤦♂️
well, that is going to be good for their economy. We should have been there this summer. Never again
I get it, but it's a bit rude to treat the actual tourists like that. Go to the government building and protest.
why don't they move from tourist areas or join the tourist industry and profit from the popularity of the area
Simple, we just dont go to Spain anymore, I do not see what the attraction is with Spain anyway.
Hear Hear!
Oh come on, the country is magnificent. A lot of the people less so. I've attempted to learn the rudiments of the language, and that helps, a little.
I want to visit a place with drinkable tap water! So long Spain!!!
We need to start protesting a bout U.K. rentals
What about daytrippers to Spain? I did a day trip to Mallorca and didn't book hotels/airbnbs.
It looks like a Globalist /WEF AstroTurf exercise although I agree Brit tourists are annoying.
If it wasn’t for tourism they would still be using donkeys on dirt tracks
Of course because there is zero production jobs in these countries no farming no grocerie stores local construction, nothing. They all just wait for holiday makers to come along and put money it their pockets 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Racist as only Brits can be😂
And for colonialism I guess ;)
@@TakeLerr5 I'd say my comment defends brittish intelligence 🫡🇬🇧🏴🫡
Well as tourism is a huge part of their gdp then let them have their way and then they will see how it affects them
Honestly don't understand this l. I lived and worked in Mallorca for a couple of years and rhe small business owners were obsessed with the amount of people that came over.... I've seen them in tears over lack of people around.....a couple of flat season's an they're bust.....I think this is leftist agitation tbf..... anyway it won't take long you'll see....
easy answer dont go , sure . Spain Marked off the list.
I think it’s the buying of second homes which prices locals out of the market that is the problem. Much like the situation we have here in London.
The Spanish forgot that there are many of their people living the good life on benefits in the UK.
Bs
It’s the same for our holiday resorts, Cornwall, The Lakes etc. the locals can’t afford the house prices and many houses are holiday lets.
Many of the shops seem to be run by wealthy folks that have moved in from other counties.
Seems it’s a case of can’t live with them can’t live without them. Definitely needs some sort of regulation but the local councils are greedy for the revenue that tourism brings in.
Pay CASH EVERYWHERE you go people, it's EXTREEMLY IMPORTANT, think of your children s future
I'm more than happy to be a tourist in my home country! Love Canada 🇨🇦
Tooo cold out there bro
If they don't want us we must respect their wishes and stop spending our money in their economy.
What money?😂 Uk is sinking
@@TakeLerr5 You've been lied to by fascist Imperialist fanatics. The UK hs the fasting growing G7 economy. Look it up.
Imagine THEM going on holiday in some other country. I'm sure they expect others to welcome them nicely.
Just wait for the knock on effects of people in the tourists business, jobs lost bars and hotel closures and shops banks the there taxis buses trains. The unemployment will go through the roof. Then on top of that people producing food and drink will go out of business.
Spainish Government playing it smooth they will tax increase or make some taxes an government will get rich an meanwhile the peolple will cheer about the taxes an recieve no benefits from it
Enough is enough; out of control tourism is ruining the quality of life for locals around the world.
Tourism in my city does not bother me one bit.
@@bristoled93You are but one, there are others who disagree with you.
These protests have made many book holidays in these places. I forget how lovely Barcelona was till I saw these news clips 🤩
People's lives in their country is way more important than our 2 weeks a year holidays,
I take it that none of these protestors ever travel themselves ...
Literally the best comment!
@@funtimefranky ❤️
I live in Spain 24yrs tourist town and were going through the same.
Were dying here because of air BnB
Fffyou
Well good news is it's a big world. And we will take our business else.
Bine ar fi ,sa nu sa mai duca niciun turist
Sa vedem ce vor face Hotelurile restaurantele
Catalanii vor sa traiasca singuri?
Pai sa-i lasam in pace,sa nu mai cheltuim bani in Barcelona, insulele Canare etc etc
Actually Mallorca get more than a third of their annual GDP from tourism and nearly a third of jobs relate to it.. The Balearic Islands shattered a tourism revenue record in 2023. So it's going to take an economic wiz to actually work out if the Mallorcans would be better off without it? There's no doubt there would be great need to replace it with something fairly quickly if reigning back tourism else it's likely they may be much worse off by dilution or quick fixes.
exactly. they have zero industry other than tourism
Come on its the same in uk house prices in holiday areas are overpriced for locals. Tourists bring lot of money i dont agree with all inclusive as it gives money to travel company not local people. The government should introduce certain laws to balance out
These protesters need to protest their Govenment, Not the tourists,?
I'm actually surprised this hasn't happened earlier! Unfortunately, not many locals benefit from tourism....it's mainly the big businesses. I think anyone who lives in a popular tourism spot, in whichever part of the world, will feel the same!
Calmer type of tourist. That is the point. Badly brought up youth that go ballistic once out their parents bedrooms.
Exactly 💯😂
Don't tar everyone with the same brush
@@User63765 Of course it's not everyone. But it's becoming a bother
They still want the 35% of their GPA that comes from tourism, but without the tourists.
Basically they want to have their cake and eat it too.
I'm British and I agree
They are being ridiculous.
Maybe they’re fed up of badly behaved British tourists…
Ok message received. We don’t go there anymore
