I just had my dnc done yesterday for this reason, I’m so sad 😭 and feel like I’m mad at the world. My first pregnancy was an ectopic and now the second pregnancy was this. It makes me not want to try anymore the heartache hurts so much. I pray anyone going through this know that you are not alone. I am here with you.
Salena, I am so, so sorry for both of your losses. I was angry and sad and frustrated for a long time and still feel like the losses have left scars. I wish you peace as you grieve and that you have at least one or two people to lean on at this time.
My first was a stillbirth Going through my second now, having an embryonic pregnancy... feeling so lost and just wish I would have a better chance at life ...TTC for 7 years.. losing hope already
On my first ultrasound there was a fetal pole measuring 6 weeks and 3 days (I should have been nearly 9 weeks) on my second ultrasound 8 days later the fetal pole had disappeared, there was only an empty sac. Bodies are so weird. I'm sorry for everyone going through this it's awful x
Christine, I am so sorry for your loss. It absolutely sucks. I hated that waiting period between the two ultrasounds, just hoping things would turn around, only to find out that there was no progression or like in your case, the fetal pole seemed to be reabsorbed. I am thinking of you and wish you weren't going through this.
this may have been a blessing in disguise. The human body most of the time self-regulates so there may have been something wrong with that fetus which triggered it to be reabsorbed in your body. This is much better than giving birth to a child with fatal defects.
I just had my first ultrasound and I should be 9 weeks but all they found was a six week sac… no baby, no fetal pole, not even a blur… I was told not to lose hope and come back next week but in my heart I know there won’t be anything there. 😢

Definitely wait at least a week and get another ultrasound. If you don't have cramping or bleeding that is a good sign. It is so hard to wait, but I would want to know for sure what is going on before jumping to conclusions. I went through the same thing with my first pregnancy and my doctor wanted to wait things out the be 100% sure. I'm glad I waited

I was pregnant for 3 months, throwing up constantly and ravenous. Had all the same symptoms as I had with my last 2 successful pregnancies. Started bleeding, had an ultrasound, and dr said it was a blighted ovum. I was in shock because I had morning sickness about 10 times a day vomiting. Meanwhile, there wasn’t even a baby there. 🤦♀️

Blighted ovum is essentially a chemical pregnancy, and usually most women will miscarry it fairly quickly but others dont which is why treatment is necessary and important

Ketlen, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It is absolutely devastating when you think everything is going well only to find out that it's not. Unfortunately, most people do not find out a cause for their blighted ovum and most people go on to have a healthy pregnancy without doing anything differently. I would still encourage you to talk with your OB/GYN to see if they can run any testing like POC testing to see if there was a genetic cause for the blighted ovum.
She put me on one year birth control injection. She told me my body was not ready for a baby. I take it for 3 months and never take it back bec I wasn't getting my period. So since then I'm using nothing with my partner and still can't get pregnant.

It is terribly hard. I am so sorry your lost your baby. For some of my losses I cried every day for weeks and for others I was numb and didn't cry as much. Either way miscarriages really do have a huge impact on many aspects of life. Hang in there and do not be afraid to reach out for support- either by directly telling friends and family what you need, or a therapist.
My husband and I have been trying for a year. We finally tested positive and they scheduled us to come in right at 8 weeks. We couldn’t see anything but the sack. They said maybe I ovulated a lot later than they thought so they scheduled me for blood work 48 hours apart the next week and another ultrasound 11 days later (today). My HCG levels didn’t rise properly and my progesterone was low. My ultrasound today looked exactly like last time, empty. I took the pills as soon as I got home and now I’m sad and hurting and feeling sick. This is so awful, it really sucks. I’m glad I chose not to tell almost anyone. My sister in law is pregnant, she got pregnant one week before me. It’s going to be hard watching her go through her pregnancy while thinking about my miscarriage.

So helpful. Going through this now and I’ve had 2 doses of medication and nothing is passing out😢. What did you do in the instance where 4 doses of medication was given n nothing happened. Was a DnC done or did it eventually pass out. I’m worried about infection.
Today marks week 8, and our first ultrasound was week 6. Both seem to indicate an empty sac, but I continue to have pregnancy symptoms. I can't bring myself to start medication or DnC. This was supposed to be my first kid. We had all gotten prepared and excited only to learn it was all for nothing. I feel hopeless.

I think this is happening to me right now. I have to go back for a second scan on Wednesday but, the sac looked empty to me. The Dr. wanted to wait a week to confirm
This happened to me over the weekend. Started bleeding 4 days ago. Progressively got worse. Went to my OB and she said my uterus was empty. No sac no embryo. Nothing. Must have past it over the weekend? Apparently I don’t need mediation or procedure because there is nothing there. I’m not sad or happy. I am 12 weeks and went for my first ultrasound which an embryo was seen with a fetal pole and my EDD was given then they said it was 4 weeks, now I'm 12 weeks it states a distorted/empty gestational sac with associated with weak decidual signs stating DD as a retained product of conception, I find it hard to believe that because after my first miscarriage, I had to do a D&C to hat the products out which I went back for a scan and everything was free. I'm so confused right now.😭😭😭😭
Just had this happen today. My wife is carrying very heartbreaking. But the good thing is not the end. Dr said will wait 1 more week, if no embryo then we take next steps.
Danielle, I am so, so sorry to you and your wife. It is heartbreaking to start to fall in love with the baby only to find out things aren't developing as they should. I really hope the baby starts growing in the next week. Hang in there during this time in limbo- it's such a hard wait. If it is at all possible I encourage you and your wife to take it easy, cancel any commitments that seem overwhelming, and take a day or more off work if it is needed. Thinking of you two.
I just found out today I have this... at 6wks 5 days my sac is empty. They say I have this type of miscarriage 😥. This video kind of gave me hopes that maybe it's a little early maybe that's why it doesn't show, but idk. I have been discharging for the past weeks brownish - redish
What about when you are doing IVF and continuously get a blighted ovum or chemical pregnancy then what? It’s extremely frustrating especially when you’re using PGT tested high-grade embryos, but yet this happens over and over again.
This happened to me a few weeks ago.. It’s so frustrating!! PGT was supposed to screen out chromosomal abnormal embryo but after miscarriage doctor said it was because of that.. then why did we spent thousands to test it?
Unfortunately, even an embryo that was tested with PGS and found to be euploid/chromosomally normal can result in a blighted ovum. Sometimes the cause just isn't known. I am so sorry. Did your doctor ask you to come in again in a week or did they tell you the sac was empty meaning it is a blighted ovum/anembryonic permanency. A small sac alone wouldn't necessarily mean a blighted ovum unless there was also no embryo developing at a point when it should be visualized. With IVF, as opposed to natural conception you know the exact timing and it is very unlikely that dating could ever be wrong. I am really sorry you're going through this.

@@amandangu7806 It's the worst- you can have a beautifully rising HCG and still have a blighted ovum. The embryo itself does not make the HCG. The HCG is essentially coming from the placenta/sac. A blighted ovum is a type of miscarriage, so the sonographer may have just used the more general term. I hope you can get in with your doctor soon. You deserve to know what is happening in your body. You could consider calling and messaging on the portal and insisting a provider call you to explain the interpretation of the ultrasound. Hang in there.

There absolutely is. Even after two losses, most people do go on to have a healthy pregnancy. It would still be worthwhile to speak with your doctor about a recurrent pregnancy loss evaluation. In a minority of people, there is a cause that is identified for the losses and can be treated. I am wishing you a healthy ongoing pregnancy in the near future.
My doctor thinks I have a vanishing twin according to my 7 week sono. I took the Sneakpeek gender blood test and it says I'm having a boy. Is it possible that it's the DNA from the vanishing twin? If my gestational sac was empty would it still produce DNA?

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that the ultrasound wasn't what you were expecting. 5 weeks is a very early ultrasound. I would suggest that you follow your doctor's recommendations. Perhaps they asked you to come back into the office for a second transvaginal ultrasound in a week to see if the sac and embryo can be visualized in the uterus?

They dodnt mention much other than just follow up again in 48 hrs. Could a sac be empty but later on find a fetal pole?
I was diagnosed with this with my daughter but after going to multiple hospitals I finally found out that my HCG levels was just low and I almost got an abortion… thank god I didn’t 😩
Are you saying you were diagnosed with a blighted ovum without an ultrasound?! As I mentioned in the video, if your dating is off (and HCG is low due to being earlier in pregnancy than anticipated) the fetal pole just may not have developed yet. I am happy to hear you followed your intuition and sorry it took time to figure out what was going on.
Thank you for this video. I have a better understanding of what I went through. I tried the pills and wouldn't recommend them personally because it made the process of taking everything out so much worse in that it was traumatic, drawn out, and painful.
I went through this in 2016. Was diagnosed with a blighted ovum when i was 12 weeks pregnant (sept2016) as my body failed to recognize that the pregnancy was not successful and so my body never began the process of terminating the pregnancy. Had a d&c done and then 2 months later (nov2016) i developed an endometrial polyp (thankfully Benign) so i ended up needing another d&c again in jan2017 in order to treat it due to the severe bleeding i was experiencing which caused me to develop anemia. Finally after 2 months, my periods regulated again. I ended up conceiving my rainbow baby (unplanned/surprise pregnancy) around july 30, 2017, (LMP was 7/16/2017) and had a positive pregancy test by aug25, 2017. I was given an EDD of 4/22/18 although my daughter was born on 4/18. My birthday is 4/20 and the EDD i was given for the anembryonic gestation was 4/3/17. I was shocked that both EDD was around my birthday. So i truly believe that even tho i miscarried back in 2016, that God gave me the chance to get my baby back. That anembryonic pregnancy was extremely dificult to deal with but i truly believe everything happens for a reason.
I'm so happy to hear that you still get another baby after that happen to you. I only find out about mine yesterday and it really break my heart. I really would like to know how to get treated and get a real baby.
@@ketlenwilliams5899 aside from getting treated for the blighted ovum, i just left my body heal and regulate itself. Then i stopped trying to conceive after trying for 4 months without success. When i stopped trying is when it just happened. Maybe its best to let nature take its course, and let your body heal. Im sure youll conceive again in the future.

I had an ultrasound and the baby measured 6 weeks with fetal pole and yolk sack. Then my next ultrasound at 11 weeks showed an empty sack. My body reabsorbed the baby. Then the actual miscarriage happened the other day. My poor man saw the mess as it happened. We are both saddened.
I just had an ultrasound last week and we saw nothing in the sac abdominally but we did see an embryo with what looked like a heartbeat vaginally. It was very hard to locate, but a CRL measurement was taken… I’m so worried. Can you see something in the Gestational sac when you have a blighted ovum? Can uterine vasculature mimic an embryo with a beating heart? Am I worrying too much?
@@estephanucha yes! The weird looking mass with vague echos (originally thought to be uterine vasculature) turned out to be a baby boy! Currently 24 weeks and all of the screenings and ultrasounds have checked out fantastic. He’s a shy little one- was hugging the uterine wall- that alone with my retroverted uterus posed an issue with the 7 week scan. In fact- until recently we couldn’t even get him on Doppler. He likes to hide, and now he’s running out of space! Nothing like his older brother who was always front and center. It will be fun to see them grow up together so close in age, their older sisters will sure have a lot of fun with them, too. 😅

Had an ultrasound today (I should be 10 weeks). The only thing visible was the gestational sac. They couldn't give me an official diagnoses and I'm supposed to call tomorrow but I'm pretty positive I'll be diagnosed with anembryonic pregnancy. If so this will be my 3rd loss. I can't help but wonder what's wrong with me, why I can't carry a normal pregnancy.
I am so sorry, Cassandra. That sounds a lot like my past experiences with anembryonic pregnancies. They often want to see you for one follow-up ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy hasn't grown. I have had five losses in a row and did a big work up with a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). If you haven't already, might be time to start working with your OB or get a referral to an RE to start being evaluated for potential causes of the losses. Unfortunately, not everyone gets an answer even after all the testing, but if you did have a treatable problem, you would want to know. Hang in there friend!

Hi i had same thing with my first pregnancy with ivf 3r day of transferred the pregnancy happened but empty sack then went through dnc ...after year i have done ivf with PGT testing and got healthy my miracle baby ...i guess you need ivf with pgd testing embryo there might be something wrong with your embryo quality..or check with your thyroid levels.
@@foziaawais5803 I want to thank you for sharing your story. I did lose the pregnancy. It was a blighted ovum and I had to take a shot to induce a miscarriage on July 7th. I was devastated. 5 years, fertility issues and 3 losses. Something unexpected happened though. My period never showed up and 6 weeks after my miscarriage I took a pregnancy test that came back positive. My dr thought it was the result of a partial miscarriage and started running a battery of tests. Those tests showed that I had somehow conceived again almost immediately following my latest loss. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks that confirmed it (my miscarriage was only 7 weeks prior when I measured 6 weeks). I had another ultrasound today. Just over 14 weeks, seeing a specialist to be monitored every couple weeks, but right now everything is progressing exactly as it should. Before this I never made it past 11 weeks. Never saw a heartbeat. Never even got a clear picture on an ultrasound. I'm still devastated over my loss but I'm feeling extremely blessed as well.

My doctor is telling me my twin sacs are both blighted ovums and wants to schedule me for a D&C this week. I told him that I want to wait another week or 2!! I’m tired of the looks from his office. It’s my body and my choice . I’m so hesitant because they told me the same thing about my daughter who is 14 months old now. She was an empty sac , then a yolk sac and no fetal pole. Then finally a baby with a heartbeat. But they told me for weeks she was a non viable pregnancy. So I’d rather wait as I’ve had zero spotting or pain.
So glad to read this. This is my 3rd pregnancy and my second ultrasound. The 1st one was last week and I measured at 6 weeks and 1 day. We saw a sac with a very small line inside of the sac but wasn't enought to measure crown to rump. So I came back one week and 1 day later and the same thing happened, no growth and pole was still in the same corner. Except this time I was measuring at 8 weeks. There was no heart beat as well. I was referred to an MD cause they couldn't do more at the clinic I went to. Awaiting my 3rd scan appointment. I'm nervous and sadden but praying that I'm just 2 early or the baby is just too small. I’m experiencing my first blighted ovum at 21 years old. I went to my doctor’s appointment just yesterday and hearing or seeing no heartbeat broke my heart completely. They couldn’t really determine whether it really is a miscarriage because I’m too early in but this would have been my second child which by now there should be a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I scheduled another appointment in two weeks to have another ultrasound and determine whether it really is a pregnancy loss but i know in my heart that it truly is… I feel like my world is crashing down. I feel like I’ve lost another life and it’s so hard moving forward without having to know more details about the baby…. I just hope he/she didn’t go through pain and they’re happy where ever they are now…
Hi my wife had this in 9 weeks and 4 days and the doctor recommend us for D&c so went straight away with D&c but after a few days my wife started complaining a pain in the abdomen area so went for checkup again turns out the there are still things visible while taking ultrasound ( I don’t know what they called it) seems the d&c was not done as the way it should be . So the gynaecologist recommended another d&c but my wife wasn’t ready for it ( too much pain) so we opted for drugs ( misoprostol etc) .Now one week has passed but still no sign of bleeding. I need your help. What are my options?

Currently a 50/50 my Dr said for me. My gestational sac is 6weeks 6days it was empty. My hcg was doubling a week ago(20,000-~40,000), but I have to check again this week. I get the results on Monday for hcg. If basically doubling then I have to wait 2 weeks to have a second ultrasound. 😵💫 My Dr thinks I may just be early due to my irregular periods, but we'll see.
I do feel like my levels are very high so they should have seen something? But not sure what's going on. I just have to ride it out and prepare for whatever happens. I have no bleeding or cramps.

Luckily since I should be 9 weeks and I’m measuring 6 weeks the Dr is only having me wait one more week currently but also told me I could just be three weeks behind due to my irregular periods but even then I still have a hard time believing I’d be that far off. How did things end up for you?
It happened to us 4 consecutive times in the past 3 years, all after IVF treatments. And that is the good case, as we tried with donor embryos and they didn't even managed to attach. Apparently we lie in the realm of unexplained fertility problems as described by doctors in 3 different clinics so far. The unfortunate thing is that no matter how I try to look for anything, there is nothing. All fertility research seems to have halted in 2000. Some methods have been established, followed by all the clinics worldwide, and that's it. If these methods work for you, its fine. If they don't, bad luck. You have the same chances of getting help from the medical science as a diabetic had in the year 1800. As for why nobody looks into that problem of recurrent anembryonic pregnancies? My guess is lack of projected revenue. And after all, infertility for the healthcare system and for some doctors too, is not treated as a disease, no matter the psychological trauma it causes.
Hi everyone, I need help. Yesterday I went to OBG. As per my last menstrual date, I must be 7 weeks 5 days pregnant. She did first ultrasound and said you’re 5 weeks 5 days pregnant with an empty gestational sac. I am literally devastated. Feeling broken. She has called me again next just to confirm after another round of ultrasound. I wanted this baby. I am crying endlessly. The doctors are so mean and rude. They don’t even respond to your queries properly. They are doctors, not we. May be our questions sound silly to them but they are serious to us. Please pray next week everything will go fine.
A sign of a blighted ovum may be low progesterone, however it is debated which comes first- the blighted ovum or the low progesterone. I have had blighted ovums while on progesterone support, as have many women. Progesterone support during the first trimester is offered by many OBs and IVF docs to patients with recurrent miscarriages, but unfortunately you can still miscarry or have a blighted ovum with the progesterone.
@@chumkidasgupta9206 Hi Chumki. I am right there with you. I am so sorry- it absolutely sucks to see that empty sack on the screen. Have you had genetic testing on the tissue from your blighted ovums to see if they are chromosomally normal or not? I would also talk to your doctor about a recurrent pregnancy loss work up. Unfortunately, there is not a guaranteed way to prevent blighted ovums, but if you do have a specific diagnosis it may be treatable to improve your chances of an ongoing and healthy pregnancy. I went through this a few years ago found out I was pregnant on Halloween I proceeded to have sex and shortly after I started bleeding went to the er they confirmed that I was pregnant but the sac was empty I was depressed and devastated not understanding why had to get D&C and it made me feel worse unfortunately I was later told I wasn’t gonna be able to have kids and ended up having a hysterectomy yrs later because I just could get pregnant or if I did get pregnant I would have a miscarriage I had 3 miscarriages and gave up 😢
If u had a blighted ovum anembryonic pregnancy is that really loss ? Cus when I read the article it said that it is a loss becus that’s what I had and I end up 7 weeks and I only knew cus I went to the ER and I had to keep doing my research cus I didn’t understand, that was my first pregnancy
Hi Tianna- yes it really is a loss. And I am sorry you are going through this. The embryo didn't develop correctly and therefore the pregnancy cannot be maintained. And it absolutely is a loss and for me personally, it has taken quite a bit of time to grieve some of my pregnancy losses including blighted ovums.
I have history of blighted ovum for 5 times. The recent one was from IVF. All the karyotyping reports are normal. Is there any other way to know the cause or medication to avoid this for next pregnancy?
I am so sorry that happened with your beatiful blastocyst. :( If you didn't do genetic testing on the embryo it could be that it was a chromosome problem even though you used donor egg. I never got an answer for why my blighted ovums happened. Hang in there.

In 1994 at 30yrs, I had ultrasound. At first they said it's triplets! Almost immediately she said it's 1 embryo and 2 blighted ovums. All I understood was 1 baby. I had alot of spotting in the beginning but gave premature birth to a baby girl. Why/how did this happen?

That same thing happened to me with one of my miscarriages. I ended up taking misoprostol three times to avoid a D & C and nothing happened so I had to have the medical procedure anyway.

I got a positive pregnancy test on 8/28/22 on 8/29/22 I had some spotting but then I started to spot more I bled the most on Monday and Tuesday today 9/1/22 I went to the dr the pregnancy test was negative and I had an ultrasound the dr said something about she can see the implantation lining. I'm sure it's a chemical pregnancy. I go next Wednesday 9/7/22 to get the Transvaginal ultrasound to get a better look. I would of been 5 weeks
At 11 weeks there was a yolk sac and my uterus was enlarged, I had a d&c nothing more was explained it was called a missed miscarriage. I'm assuming it was a blighted ovum
Hi Parker. I am so sorry to hear about your pregnancy loss. Blighted ovums absolutely suck and if you are having a natural miscarriage (one without medication or a D&C) they can take forever. I am thinking of you as you grieve this loss.
Hello. I am so sorry to hear that your TTC journey has been so long. :( A specific cause for blighted ovum is usually not identified. And having one blighted ovum does not mean it will necessarily happen again. I would definitely think about working with a reproductive endocrinologist to maximize your chances of getting pregnant with an ongoing pregnancy if you haven't yet. IVF doctors can maximize the chances for conception and a healthy pregnancy with various treatments besides just IVF. I am wishing you the very best.... As I have seen many times before there is still almost always reason to have hope that it could happen.

Went to an ultrasound there was no baby in the sac.. The MVA process was dine and it was very painful 😢😢 i would like to try again but im afraid it might happen again😢😢
My wife tested pregnant 11/15. Was feeling bad, took a Covid test on 11/18 and was positive for Covid. First ultrasound was 12/20. Blighted ovum. We were told "couldn't possibly have been Covid, Covid doesn't do that." It was a very mild case, but still...I can't help but to think it was due to that that this happened.

I just had my dnc done yesterday for this reason, I’m so sad 😭 and feel like I’m mad at the world. My first pregnancy was an ectopic and now the second pregnancy was this. On my first ultrasound there was a fetal pole measuring 6 weeks and 3 days (I should have been nearly 9 weeks) on my second ultrasound 8 days later the fetal pole had disappeared, there was only an empty sac. Bodies are so weird. I'm sorry for everyone going through this it's awful x
Christine, I am so sorry for your loss. It absolutely sucks. I hated that waiting period between the two ultrasounds, just hoping things would turn around, only to find out that there was no progression or like in your case, the fetal pole seemed to be reabsorbed. I am thinking of you and wish you weren't going through this.

this may have been a blessing in disguise. The human body most of the time self-regulates so there may have been something wrong with that fetus which triggered it to be reabsorbed in your body. This is much better than giving birth to a child with fatal defects.

I just had my first ultrasound and I should be 9 weeks but all they found was a six week sac… no baby, no fetal pole, not even a blur… I was told not to lose hope and come back next week but in my heart I know there won’t be anything there. 😢

I just went through it today. It’s very saddening to my husband, young son and I.
Definitely wait at least a week and get another ultrasound. If you don't have cramping or bleeding that is a good sign. It is so hard to wait, but I would want to know for sure what is going on before jumping to conclusions. I went through the same thing with my first pregnancy and my doctor wanted to wait things out the be 100% sure. I'm glad I waited

Blighted ovum is essentially a chemical pregnancy, and usually most women will miscarry it fairly quickly but others dont which is why treatment is necessary and important

Ketlen, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It is absolutely devastating when you think everything is going well only to find out that it's not. Unfortunately, most people do not find out a cause for their blighted ovum and most people go on to have a healthy pregnancy without doing anything differently. I would still encourage you to talk with your OB/GYN to see if they can run any testing like POC testing to see if there was a genetic cause for the blighted ovum.

She put me on one year birth control injection. She told me my body was not ready for a baby. I take it for 3 months and never take it back bec I wasn't getting my period. So since then I'm using nothing with my partner and still can't get pregnant.

It is terribly hard. I am so sorry your lost your baby. For some of my losses I cried every day for weeks and for others I was numb and didn't cry as much. Either way miscarriages really do have a huge impact on many aspects of life. Hang in there and do not be afraid to reach out for support- either by directly telling friends and family what you need, or a therapist.
My husband and I have been trying for a year. We finally tested positive and they scheduled us to come in right at 8 weeks. We couldn’t see anything but the sack. They said maybe I ovulated a lot later than they thought so they scheduled me for blood work 48 hours apart the next week and another ultrasound 11 days later (today). My HCG levels didn’t rise properly and my progesterone was low. My ultrasound today looked exactly like last time, empty. I took the pills as soon as I got home and now I’m sad and hurting and feeling sick. This is so awful, it really sucks. I’m glad I chose not to tell almost anyone. My sister in law is pregnant, she got pregnant one week before me. It’s going to be hard watching her go through her pregnancy while thinking about my miscarriage.

So helpful. Going through this now and I’ve had 2 doses of medication and nothing is passing out😢. What did you do in the instance where 4 doses of medication was given n nothing happened. Was a DnC done or did it eventually pass out. I’m worried about infection.
Today marks week 8, and our first ultrasound was week 6. Both seem to indicate an empty sac, but I continue to have pregnancy symptoms. I can't bring myself to start medication or DnC. This happened to me over the weekend. Started bleeding 4 days ago. Progressively got worse. Went to my OB and she said my uterus was empty. No sac no embryo. Nothing. I am 12 weeks and went for my first ultrasound which an embryo was seen with a fetal pole and my EDD was given then they said it was 4 weeks, now I'm 12 weeks it states a distorted/empty gestational sac with associated with weak decidual signs stating DD as a retained product of conception, I find it hard to believe that because after my first miscarriage, I had to do a D&C to hat the products out which I went back for a scan and everything was free.

Danielle, I am so, so sorry to you and your wife. It is heartbreaking to start to fall in love with the baby only to find out things aren't developing as they should. I really hope the baby starts growing in the next week. Hang in there during this time in limbo- it's such a hard wait. If it is at all possible I encourage you and your wife to take it easy, cancel any commitments that seem overwhelming, and take a day or more off work if it is needed. Thinking of you two.

What about when you are doing IVF and continuously get a blighted ovum or chemical pregnancy then what? It’s extremely frustrating especially when you’re using PGT tested high-grade embryos, but yet this happens over and over again.
This happened to me a few weeks ago.. It’s so frustrating!! PGT was supposed to screen out chromosomal abnormal embryo but after miscarriage doctor said it was because of that.. then why did we spent thousands to test it?

How does it work with IVF and it a PGS tested embryo? 7 week scan showing small sac.. it is a blighted ovum?
Unfortunately, even an embryo that was tested with PGS and found to be euploid/chromosomally normal can result in a blighted ovum. Sometimes the cause just isn't known. I am so sorry. Did your doctor ask you to come in again in a week or did they tell you the sac was empty meaning it is a blighted ovum/anembryonic permanency. A small sac alone wouldn't necessarily mean a blighted ovum unless there was also no embryo developing at a point when it should be visualized. With IVF, as opposed to natural conception you know the exact timing and it is very unlikely that dating could ever be wrong. I am really sorry you're going through this.

@@amandangu7806 It's the worst- you can have a beautifully rising HCG and still have a blighted ovum. The embryo itself does not make the HCG. The HCG is essentially coming from the placenta/sac. A blighted ovum is a type of miscarriage, so the sonographer may have just used the more general term. I hope you can get in with your doctor soon. You deserve to know what is happening in your body. You could consider calling and messaging on the portal and insisting a provider call you to explain the interpretation of the ultrasound. Hang in there.

There absolutely is. Even after two losses, most people do go on to have a healthy pregnancy. It would still be worthwhile to speak with your doctor about a recurrent pregnancy loss evaluation. In a minority of people, there is a cause that is identified for the losses and can be treated. I am wishing you a healthy ongoing pregnancy in the near future.
My doctor thinks I have a vanishing twin according to my 7 week sono. I took the Sneakpeek gender blood test and it says I'm having a boy. Is it possible that it's the DNA from the vanishing twin? If my gestational sac was empty would it still produce DNA?

Hello. I'm sorry to hear that the ultrasound wasn't what you were expecting. 5 weeks is a very early ultrasound. I would suggest that you follow your doctor's recommendations. Perhaps they asked you to come back into the office for a second transvaginal ultrasound in a week to see if the sac and embryo can be visualized in the uterus?

Are you saying you were diagnosed with a blighted ovum without an ultrasound?! As I mentioned in the video, if your dating is off (and HCG is low due to being earlier in pregnancy than anticipated) the fetal pole just may not have developed yet. I am happy to hear you followed your intuition and sorry it took time to figure out what was going on.

I went through this in 2016. Was diagnosed with a blighted ovum when i was 12 weeks pregnant (sept2016) as my body failed to recognize that the pregnancy was not successful and so my body never began the process of terminating the pregnancy. Had a d&c done and then 2 months later (nov2016) i developed an endometrial polyp (thankfully
Benign) so i ended up needing another d&c again in jan2017 in order to treat it due to the severe bleeding i was experiencing which caused me to develop anemia. Finally after 2 months, my periods regulated again. I ended up conceiving my rainbow baby (unplanned/surprise pregnancy) around july 30, 2017, (LMP was 7/16/2017) and had a positive pregancy test by aug25, 2017. I was given an EDD of 4/22/18 although my daughter was born on 4/18. My birthday is 4/20 and the EDD i was given for the anembryonic gestation was 4/3/17. I was shocked that both EDD was around my birthday. So i truly believe that even tho i miscarried back in 2016, that God gave me the chance to get my baby back. That
anembryonic pregnancy was extremely dificult to deal with but i truly believe everything happens for a reason.

@@ketlenwilliams5899 aside from getting treated for the blighted ovum, i just left my body heal and regulate itself. Then i stopped trying to conceive after trying for 4 months without success. When i stopped trying is when it just happened. Maybe its best to let nature take its course, and let your body heal. Im sure youll conceive again in the future.

I had an ultrasound and the baby measured 6 weeks with fetal pole and yolk sack. Then my next ultrasound at 11 weeks showed an empty sack. My body reabsorbed the baby. Then the actual miscarriage happened the other day. My poor man saw the mess as it happened. We are both saddened.
I just had an ultrasound last week and we saw nothing in the sac abdominally but we did see an embryo with what looked like a heartbeat vaginally. It was very hard to locate, but a CRL measurement was taken… I’m so worried. Can you see something in the Gestational sac when you have a blighted ovum? Can uterine vasculature mimic an embryo with a beating heart? Am I worrying too much?

@@estephanucha yes! The weird looking mass with vague echos (originally thought to be uterine vasculature) turned out to be a baby boy! Currently 24 weeks and all of the screenings and ultrasounds have checked out fantastic. He’s a shy little one- was hugging the uterine wall- that alone with my retroverted uterus posed an issue with the 7 week scan. In fact- until recently we couldn’t even get him on Doppler. He likes to hide, and now he’s running out of space! Nothing like his older brother who was always front and center. It will be fun to see them grow up together so close in age, their older sisters will sure have a lot of fun with them, too. 😅

Had an ultrasound today (I should be 10 weeks). The only thing visible was the gestational sac. They couldn't give me an official diagnoses and I'm supposed to call tomorrow but I'm pretty positive I'll be diagnosed with anembryonic pregnancy. If so this will be my 3rd loss. I can't help but wonder what's wrong with me, why I can't carry a normal pregnancy.
I am so sorry, Cassandra. That sounds a lot like my past experiences with anembryonic pregnancies. They often want to see you for one follow-up ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy hasn't grown. I have had five losses in a row and did a big work up with a reproductive endocrinologist (RE). If you haven't already, might be time to start working with your OB or get a referral to an RE to start being evaluated for potential causes of the losses. Unfortunately, not everyone gets an answer even after all the testing, but if you did have a treatable problem, you would want to know. Hang in there friend!

I hate it that you've had so many loses and know how I feel but I'm also grateful that I'm not alone either. I just hope I get to be a mom.
Hi i had same thing with my first pregnancy with ivf 3r day of transferred the pregnancy happened but empty sack then went through dnc ...after year i have done ivf with PGT testing and got healthy my miracle baby ...i guess you need ivf with pgd testing embryo there might be something wrong with your embryo quality..or check with your thyroid levels.
@@foziaawais5803 I want to thank you for sharing your story. I did lose the pregnancy. It was a blighted ovum and I had to take a shot to induce a miscarriage on July 7th. I was devastated. 5 years, fertility issues and 3 losses.
Something unexpected happened though. My period never showed up and 6 weeks after my miscarriage I took a pregnancy test that came back positive. My dr thought it was the result of a partial miscarriage and started running a battery of tests. Those tests showed that I had somehow conceived again almost immediately following my latest loss. I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks that confirmed it (my miscarriage was only 7 weeks prior when I measured 6 weeks). I had another ultrasound today. Just over 14 weeks, seeing a specialist to be monitored every couple weeks, but right now everything is progressing exactly as it should. Before this I never made it past 11 weeks. Never saw a heartbeat. Never even got a clear picture on an ultrasound. I'm still devastated over my loss but I'm feeling extremely blessed as well.

My doctor is telling me my twin sacs are both blighted ovums and wants to schedule me for a D&C this week. I told him that I want to wait another week or 2!! I’m tired of the looks from his office. It’s my body and my choice . I’m so hesitant because they told me the same thing about my daughter who is 14 months old now. She was an empty sac , then a yolk sac and no fetal pole. Then finally a baby with a heartbeat. But they told me for weeks she was a non viable pregnancy. So I’d rather wait as I’ve had zero spotting or pain.

So glad to read this. This is my 3rd pregnancy and my second ultrasound. The 1st one was last week and I measured at 6 weeks and 1 day. We saw a sac with a very small line inside of the sac but wasn't enought to measure crown to rump. So I came back one week and 1 day later and the same thing happened, no growth and pole was still in the same corner. Except this time I was measuring at 8 weeks. There was no heart beat as well. I was referred to an MD cause they couldn't do more at the clinic I went to. Awaiting my 3rd scan appointment. I'm nervous and sadden but praying that I'm just 2 early or the baby is just too small. Glad your story ended happily hope mine will be the same

Hi Ame. I am so sorry you went through that on your first pregnancy. Odds are it won't happen again, but it is terrifying. I personally dread the OB's office, waiting room, and the ultrasounds so much. I definitely know where you are coming from. I am really hoping you have a perfectly developing little babe in there. I would try to tell myself, "As far as I know everything is developing well- different pregnancy different outcome" Hang in there!

I’m experiencing my first blighted ovum at 21 years old. I went to my doctor’s appointment just yesterday and hearing or seeing no heartbeat broke my heart completely. They couldn’t really determine whether it really is a miscarriage because I’m too early in but this would have been my second child which by now there should be a heartbeat at 6 weeks. I scheduled another appointment in two weeks to have another ultrasound and determine whether it really is a pregnancy loss but i know in my heart that it truly is… I feel like my world is crashing down. I feel like I’ve lost another life and it’s so hard moving forward without having to know more details about the baby…. I just hope he/she didn’t go through pain and they’re happy where ever they are now…

Hi my wife had this in 9 weeks and 4 days and the doctor recommend us for D&c so went straight away with D&c but after a few days my wife started complaining a pain in the abdomen area so went for checkup again turns out the there are still things visible while taking ultrasound ( I don’t know what they called it) seems the d&c was not done as the way it should be . So the gynaecologist recommended another d&c but my wife wasn’t ready for it ( too much pain) so we opted for drugs ( misoprostol etc) .Now one week has passed but still no sign of bleeding. I need your help. What are my options?

Currently a 50/50 my Dr said for me.
My gestational sac is 6weeks 6days it was empty. My hcg was doubling a week ago(20,000-~40,000), but I have to check again this week. I get the results on Monday for hcg. If basically doubling then I have to wait 2 weeks to have a second ultrasound. 😵💫
My Dr thinks I may just be early due to my irregular periods, but we'll see.
I do feel like my levels are very high so they should have seen something? But not sure what's going on. I just have to ride it out and prepare for whatever happens.

Hi Nora, sorry to hear you are going through this. It was so frustrating for me as a patient, knowing there is no test or imaging that can definitively tell me what would become of my pregnancy. I am really hoping that yours keeps developing healthily and that this is a false alarm. Hang in there.
Hey, I’m in the same boat currently. Luckily since I should be 9 weeks and I’m measuring 6 weeks the Dr is only having me wait one more week currently but also told me I could just be three weeks behind due to my irregular periods but even then I still have a hard time believing I’d be that far off. How did things end up for you?
Literally what I’m going thru right now. D&C Friday.
It happened to us 4 consecutive times in the past 3 years, all after IVF treatments. And that is the good case, as we tried with donor embryos and they didn't even managed to attach. Apparently we lie in the realm of unexplained fertility problems as described by doctors in 3 different clinics so far.
The unfortunate thing is that no matter how I try to look for anything, there is nothing. All fertility research seems to have halted in 2000. Some methods have been established, followed by all the clinics worldwide, and that's it. If these methods work for you, its fine. If they don't, bad luck. You have the same chances of getting help from the medical science as a diabetic had in the year 1800.
As for why nobody looks into that problem of recurrent anembryonic pregnancies? My guess is lack of projected revenue. And after all, infertility for the healthcare system and for some doctors too, is not treated as a disease, no matter the psychological trauma it causes.

Hi everyone, I need help. Yesterday I went to OBG. As per my last menstrual date, I must be 7 weeks 5 days pregnant. She did first ultrasound and said you’re 5 weeks 5 days pregnant with an empty gestational sac. I am literally devastated. Feeling broken. She has called me again next just to confirm after another round of ultrasound. I wanted this baby. I am crying endlessly. The doctors are so mean and rude. They don’t even respond to your queries properly. They are doctors, not we. May be our questions sound silly to them but they are serious to us. Please pray next week everything will go fine.

Could anembryonic pregnancy be caused by low progesterone?
A sign of a blighted ovum may be low progesterone, however it is debated which comes first- the blighted ovum or the low progesterone. I have had blighted ovums while on progesterone support, as have many women. Progesterone support during the first trimester is offered by many OBs and IVF docs to patients with recurrent miscarriages, but unfortunately you can still miscarry or have a blighted ovum with the progesterone.

@@chumkidasgupta9206 Hi Chumki. I am right there with you. I am so sorry- it absolutely sucks to see that empty sack on the screen. Have you had genetic testing on the tissue from your blighted ovums to see if they are chromosomally normal or not? I would also talk to your doctor about a recurrent pregnancy loss work up. Unfortunately, there is not a guaranteed way to prevent blighted ovums, but if you do have a specific diagnosis it may be treatable to improve your chances of an ongoing and healthy pregnancy. I went through this a few years ago found out I was pregnant on Halloween I proceeded to have sex and shortly after I started bleeding went to the er they confirmed that I was pregnant but the sac was empty I was depressed and devastated not understanding why had to get D&C and it made me feel worse unfortunately I was later told I wasn’t gonna be able to have kids and ended up having a hysterectomy yrs later because I just could get pregnant or if I did get pregnant I would have a miscarriage I had 3 miscarriages and gave up 😢

Hi Tianna- yes it really is a loss. And I am sorry you are going through this. The embryo didn't develop correctly and therefore the pregnancy cannot be maintained. And it absolutely is a loss and for me personally, it has taken quite a bit of time to grieve some of my pregnancy losses including blighted ovums.
I have history of blighted ovum for 5 times. The recent one was from IVF. All the karyotyping reports are normal. Is there any other way to know the cause or medication to avoid this for next pregnancy?

I am so sorry that happened with your beatiful blastocyst. :( If you didn't do genetic testing on the embryo it could be that it was a chromosome problem even though you used donor egg. I never got an answer for why my blighted ovums happened. Hang in there.

In 1994 at 30yrs, I had ultrasound. At first they said it's triplets! Almost immediately she said it's 1 embryo and 2 blighted ovums. All I understood was 1 baby. I had alot of spotting in the beginning but gave premature birth to a baby girl. Why/how did this happen?

That same thing happened to me with one of my miscarriages. I ended up taking misoprostol three times to avoid a D & C and nothing happened so I had to have the medical procedure anyway.

I got a positive pregnancy test on 8/28/22 on 8/29/22 I had some spotting but then I started to spot more I bled the most on Monday and Tuesday today 9/1/22 I went to the dr the pregnancy test was negative and I had an ultrasound the dr said something about she can see the implantation lining. I'm sure it's a chemical pregnancy. I go next Wednesday 9/7/22 to get the Transvaginal ultrasound to get a better look. I would of been 5 weeks
At 11 weeks there was a yolk sac and my uterus was enlarged, I had a d&c nothing more was explained it was called a missed miscarriage. I'm assuming it was a blighted ovum

Hi Parker. I am so sorry to hear about your pregnancy loss. Blighted ovums absolutely suck and if you are having a natural miscarriage (one without medication or a D&C) they can take forever. I am thinking of you as you grieve this loss.

Hello. I am so sorry to hear that your TTC journey has been so long. :( A specific cause for blighted ovum is usually not identified. And having one blighted ovum does not mean it will necessarily happen again. I would definitely think about working with a reproductive endocrinologist to maximize your chances of getting pregnant with an ongoing pregnancy if you haven't yet. IVF doctors can maximize the chances for conception and a healthy pregnancy with various treatments besides just IVF. I am wishing you the very best.... As I have seen many times before there is still almost always reason to have hope that it could happen.

Went to an ultrasound there was no baby in the sac.. The MVA process was dine and it was very painful 😢😢 i would like to try again but im afraid it might happen again😢😢

My wife tested pregnant 11/15. Was feeling bad, took a Covid test on 11/18 and was positive for Covid. First ultrasound was 12/20. Blighted ovum. We were told "couldn't possibly have been Covid, Covid doesn't do that." It was a very mild case, but still...I can't help but to think it was due to that that this happened.
Your wife and I on the same boat we even have the same dates. Didn’t have Covid and it happened to me. Worse empty feeling ever. I am so sorry for your loss. I know we will have our rainbow babies soon ❤
