    Grabs X-H2 and sets this immediately. OK so I always had face detect on/off set, but hopefully the L/R eye switch setting will stop the AF mucking about like it can do when it can't quite work out which eye is closest to camera. Looking forward to more tips as new Fujifilm user. 👍

    I have always had a button mapped to turn eye detect on and off, but never considered mapping a button to select which eye. Cool idea! I haven't done any portrait shooting in quite a while. Now I have to do some and give this a try. Have a great weekend Pete!!

    I've been using that face detect on and off switch for a while now but my brain blew up with the eye selection switch. I got so upset on my last shoot because 90% of the shots I took got the wrong eye! but now I know better. Thank you Pete Coco!

  • @mikeb187

    Nice run through. I have been assigning a button to toggle face detect since the cameras first allowed it but there are some subtle variations between models. The X-T5 doesn't turn off face detect on power off, unlike my previous T3/T30 bodies and it catches me out time and again. Either i hit the button and it unintentionally disables it, or i start shooting non-portrait subjects and it picks on "false faces". The only quibble I have with a camera that otherwise handles beautifully intuitively.

    • @PeteCocoPhoto
      @PeteCocoPhoto  Місяць тому +1

      Thank you! One of the thing that frustrates me about Fuji is that they make these weird small changes to each camera.

    • @mikeb187
      @mikeb187 Місяць тому

      @@PeteCocoPhoto it's particularly irksome if you pair up differently bodies as I like to do, looking at a T50 to add to the T5 and expecting a learning period to get used to the little differences. Still, on balance this is a great way to go for a non-pro shooter with all prime lenses. I always carry one or other body, giving me the choice of the more compact one if I want to travel really light, or can take both when on a proper "photography day". In film days I used a Contax RTS 2 plus an M6 in the exact same way. Hated the weight and handling clunk of full frame DSLRs after that but then switched to Fuji X and haven't looked back since

    I have my Fn button set for IS control, my AFON button for back-button focus BBF (I use the dial to magnify for manual focus), AE-L for face detection on/off, and my Fn3 D-pad button to L/R. I did it this way, because I need that BBF button and the dial for manual focus magnify.

    This is a great tip and I agree I could've definitely used this the other day when I was doing that shoot that I was telling you about and I was able to navigate my way through it but something like this would've been really handy on my GFX camera, I wish that I could have a similar set up, but I will probably have another play with the GFX this afternoon because I definitely would like to be able to do the same on that camera and the GFX cameras auto focus is a little sluggish. It actually still works okay especially when the light is okay... thank you for the very insightful video

      @nevvanclarke9225 4 місяці тому +1

      @@PeteCocoPhoto I'm just having a play this afternoon with the XT5, so I will let you know if I can do that. It is actually useful because sometimes the model or person your photographing might be slightly angled to the left or right in fact, I often shoot people not straight on, I know that's not traditional, but sometimes it can be really cool just to offset somebody slightly

    • @PeteCocoPhoto

      I use Canon as well and they are also very customizable. Not sure about the others

    • @OkwyUgonweze
      @OkwyUgonweze 4 місяці тому +1

      I also have z8 and Z9 and they are well customizable. In nikon the af is very simplified you just move the joystick to switvh eyes.Also you can assign an af pattern to a button without eye/subject detect and another with those features to another button completely eliminating the guess work. They also have 3D af pattern that picks just what you point it at in a crowd.

    Sigh.....you know despite indicating that I want the closest eye in focus (whether right or left depending on the situation) my xt5 tends to focus on the wrong eye even when the focus confirmation box is placed on the correct one (with Fujinon lenses). It happens nearly 50% of the time....I am seriously tired of getting so many false positives with the camera that I might just call it quits with fuji if the summer firmware update doesn't fix things. Oh yeah an this is for stills! on video is not even worth mentioning.

    i got a problem with the last tip... on my X-H2 there is Wide/Tracking - which gives me a pretty small box - which has to be above a face to even get into Eye AF. So in order to switch faces, i need to position that little square right above the face. Once locked it says with that face, which brings back old DSLR "focus - recompose" vibes... Haven't found a way to just use wide without that tracking box...

    • @PeteCocoPhoto
      @PeteCocoPhoto  Місяць тому

      Yes, this is just the way tracking works on Fuji. Try the same method in WIDE instead. I will do this sometimes as well. Hopefully Fuji will make further tweaks to the AF interface.

    • @AiSavvy
      @AiSavvy Місяць тому

      make sure you are in single af and not in afc. you'll have wide only option in afs, and in afc mode it'll be wide\tracking.
