Bro I'm from odisha i think that Krishna's heart is some kind of reactor the term reactor i mean something like ironman's heart because during that heart transplant time the government cut off the electricity of Puri completely and no electric devices should be used for a very long distance and even the pundits will be blindfolded during that process so they can't see what it is. Let me summarize what i know and believe:
Firstly there are 4 statues (Jagannadh , Balarama, Subhadra , Sudharsana ) and as per the official records the said Heart of krishna is untrue. However it is called "Brahma padhartha" not Brahma padarta. It is important to emphasize the "dha" in the word Padhartha and not "da". No one knows the form, shape or energy it emits for sure. But it is believed that it is some kind of material.
As you rightly mentioned, it is switched from one statue to another every 12 years. The priest chants some mantra once he opens the little door present in the chest (also called as Brahma Kavatam ) of Puri Jagannadh's statue, he feels his palm heavier, and he takes the so called "Brahma padhartha" to the new statue and chants another mantra and he feels his palms lighter. (This was a bit convincing but not entirely confirmed)
The person who does the transport is said to be from a single family that has been doing for centuries and it is done the oldest person of that family - This means that person doesn't live to transport another time. Also the reason why it is believed to switch off all the lights, camera's etc., is to protect the secrecy that Puri Jagannath temple has. As in the olden times before electricity was invented they used to turn off all the fire and candles to avoid visual contact of this particular "Brahma Padhartha".
Having said that, Additional info is that this Brahma padartha is being protect by "Nava Narasimha swamy" in that temple. There are 9 Narasimha swamy statues in various locations inside the temple which is hard to find but you need to spend hours if not days to find all 9 statues inside Puri Jagannadh temple. So i believe the brahma padhartha has something to do with Lord Narasimha swamy himself.
Overall, i would love to believe that this Brahma padhartha something that is capable of saving the humanity once we hit the dooms day and it being secret is safe for us rather if it is known, it will be exploited , disrespected and misused.
