I fucking love Obi wan and darth mauls fight in this movie. Ray Park is such a talented guy, I love how easily he switches forms once obi wan breaks his lightsaber, just to let everyone know that he’s still incredibly dangerous and skilled. Also, huge props to Ewan Mcgregor, his passion for star wars and enthusiasm make all his fight scenes so great.
I love how, during that final clash between Maul and Obi-Wan, the music doesn't come in until Maul Force-shoves Obi-Wan into the pit. Until then, it's all about the lightsabers.
As I recall, a lot of the hate came from it being more about politics rather that just the underdog good guys hammering the sh!t out of evil like the OT. Every time I heard that I thought of course it was never going to be just like the originals because it's telling a completely different story in a different time period. It's the time of the Republic so there isn't going to be a massive in your face evil group like the empire to fight and it's telling the story of the fall of a large political body orchestrated from behind the scenes so course it's going to feature political elements quite heavily. It was never ever going to be just like the originals and I think a lot of people just weren't willing to accept that. I'm not sure if they just wanted carbon copies of the first three films or what. All these years later some of those people must have come to realise what I've mentioned above or the new generation of fans have been able to see it. That's why the prequels have now become a lot more popular than they were when they first came out and why the Clone Wars and Rebels series did so well. I liked the prequels and I was even someone who had no real problem with Jar Jar or a lot of the dialogue that others complained about. I did think that Anakin's fall to the dark side in ROTS could have been done better but all in all they were good movies that did a good job telling the story they set out to tell.
Obi Wan's duel vs Darth Maul is still my fav Star Wars fight to this day. I know Hayden Christensen is more talented with the saber, but damn it Ewan McGregor got hands too
The music that’s played over the Maul vs. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan duel, it’s called _Duel Of The Fates_ because of how the outcome would outline the future of the Star Wars universe. If Qui-Gon didn’t die, Darth Vader would never have been born. Obi-Wan did the best he could but he never got the full respect of Anakin because he was no Qui-Gon Jinn. When you look at Episodes 2 and 3, the Jedi became corrupt and started following the way of the Senate rather than following the will of the Force, which is what every Jedi is supposed to do. They referred to Anakin as the Chosen One yet they always held him back and told him to let go of his attachments which is simply impossible to do. Had Qui-Gon never died, he would’ve allowed Anakin to go visit his mother. He also would’ve taught Anakin about all the aspects of both the light and the dark sides of the Force. So when you take a good look at the franchise, it’s focused on the tragedy of Darth Vader.
He's not wrong 😂at that point in time the 2 people almost any jedi would not survive a duel against would be Count Dooku (Darth Tyranus) and Darth Maul. Maul was extremely proficient in offensive dueling and assassination. Obi-Wan at that stage as a padawan shouldn't have actually been a match for Maul since Obi wasn't really good at offensive styles of dueling, he was always defensive, and later became the best defensive duelist by the time he became a Jedi Master.
@@floofy117 also the whole flip over the head and THEN slice was very open to attack shoulda been: call the saber start jumping up grab and turn on cut once before maul realized the plan flip overhead cut no. 2 (as we see in the movie) force push lower half down the chasm walk up and physical push top half (preferably by boot to the head) down the chasm i get they wanted a PG-13 thing, and what we got was amazing, but the fight lost much of it's desperation and anger after Obi-wan got pushed

Swinging your lightsaber at defenseless opponent, who is doing a cool flip overtop of you instead of starring like a deer in headlights is a simple but very effective lesson indeed.
That's exactly WHY Anakin did that. He knew that's Obi's claim to fame, he tried to show up his master by using it on him, but it's risky and has to be done by surprise, but Obi baited him into it by mocking him over the high ground and knew it was coming.
No one here seems to comment that the move Obi Wan did (flipping over Darth Maul, land behind him and cut him in half) is similar to what Anakin tried to do with Obi Wan on their final fight on Mustaffar (before Anakin become Vader). Only the role was reverse here. Instead of Maul, Obi Wan was standing there and Anakin was where Obi Wan was years before. Obi Wan already knew what Anakin could try (because he tried it first) and warned Anakin not to try it.
After Maul mortally wounds Qui .. Obi moves away from his Jedi training in fighting Maul which is why Maul was able initially be stronger... When Obi was hanging on he realized that and was able to summon Qui's saber to defeat Maul(though he didn't kill him as we discovered later).

Got to love the '90s, back when the marketing and the merchandise spoiled the movie. Even if the internet existed, they weren't beating the companies to the punch
The Lightsaber duels in the Prequel Trilogy is better than Disney's crappy Sequel Trilogy because they are well chorographic by evolving kendo, and George Lucas himself made it happen since he wanted to see a Jedi in his prime.
also the fact that rey and co were not trained to use a saber, so are expectedly sloppy Kylo was, but he's just an angry toddler so he doesn't use good technique, and just from the first sequel movie we don't know how long it was since he fought a saber or force-user before the events depicted

The ways of dueling were lost over the years. You can't tell me Luke Skywalker was a great sword fighter when he first fought Vader. He never really used a lightsaber before other than training and even that was basics. Why would Rey who had never had training before know how to fucking sword fight? Get off your high horse.
Qui-Gon Jin's death was the most unexpected and saddest death scene in Star Wars history besides Princess Padme, Darth Vador, Han Solo, Princess Leia, and Kylo Ren, etc.

Then when Obi-Wan engages Maul and it's nothing but speed and aggression with a little trickery at the end to seal the deal. It could be excellent directing or it could be that Liam Neeson was just to old to pull it off. Either way, it works.
I think Qui Gon wasn’t necessarily outclassed. He is a Jedi master and has decades of experience and training. Maul was pushed back by qui gon a lot in the duel. The thing is, Maul is younger, has more stamina and energy. Throughout the fight, qui gon was becoming more tired. Maul had to use his hilt to hit Qui gon and disorient him so he could land the finishing blow.
@@jspaceemperor420 that and the jedi in general had clearly not fought a sith for a long period, nor apparently simulated a training programme for the occasion that and the jedi are generally more defensive anyway, given the quote ''a jedi uses the force for knowledge and defense, never for attack'', at least compared to the more hate and anger-filled sith there's only so much defense one can do before a chink appears, even the best fighters can be overcome by exhausting their defence attempts, Maul got Qui-gon exactly where he needed him for his little stun punch
