The Clippers were playing excellent ball when Harper injured his knee. They were on an Eastern Conference road trip and went 5-3, when that meant something. Two of those losses were to the eventual champion Detroit Pistons by 2 points, and to New York on a non-call on a Patrick Ewing goaltend at game end, costing the Clippers a basket and the win. Although the Bulls had great scorers, the reason they won all those championships (especially the last 3) was bc at crunch time, they would put on a full court press and shut teams down with probably the greatest defensive team ever, that included 4 incredible defenders: Harper, Jordan, Pippen, & Rodman.
As someone who hated the bulls as a kid for destroying my home team and dominating the league, I remember Ron Harper being a guy that would refuse to lose and make big shots at all the wrong times. There just wasn't a team in the league that had a good answer to deal with Jordan, Pippen, AND Harper.
I remember Harper back in the the day, and yes, he gave the bulls fits. Cause, I used to hate him back then, I was rooting for Jordan. Up until his injury he was good.
Who do you guys think is the equivalent of a Ron Harper today? Not just his style of play. I’m talking about was there ever another player who was was touted as a star Early in his career, played kind of like one, fell off, but then won championships as a player later in his career as a solid starter? I mean he was a match made in heaven for those late 90s bulls. 6 foot 6 complimentary defensive point guard who knew how to score when needed and had the iq. But on Cleveland, it looked like he would have become a scoring machine. Damn.
Ron Harper was one of the best shooting guard wing players athletic could Score and defend.. very under rated from his era yet he has 5 chips that he helped his teams get even if he tho he was not the main man. salute to Ron Holly wood Harp. one of my fav NBA players from my youth
I equate Ron Harper's importance to Andre Iguadola when he was on the Warriors. On that classic shot against the Cavs that MJ made, they took Ron Harper off him for fricken Craig Ehlo. Harper was a monster.
When people talk about comparing Da Bulls to more current teams, they often overlook Harper's defensive abilities. With Jordan, Pippen, Rodman, and Harper that's 4 serious defenders.
Was Harper playing with Dominique in LA for a time? I can barely remember cuz I didn't get to see many Clippers games on TV since I was in Ohio but dang that would've been a killer duo
Explain this to me: As you all know: Born in Seattle in 1973, Sonics and Blazers fan. Ron Harper, Defense: 1991-92: Defense: C. 1992-93, 1993-94, and 1994-95: Defense: D. Yet, in 1995-96, Defense: A+. HOW did Ron Harper transform from "Harper's defense is embarrassing. He's often not in the same zip code as his man."
Harper before his knee injuries was an athlete! Sucks that those types of injuries ruin careers. He did a great job of becoming an important role player who was great on defense and became more of a facilitator playing PG in the triangle offense. Should've made all defensive team at least once. Prob should've made the All-star team in 88-89. It's weird even at 30 he was averaging 20 ppg the year before he went to Chicago. And then he gets there when MJ had first retired and he didn't play much. But he figured things out and became the starting PG in 95-96. Sort of a career like Andre Iguadola. Went from the top guy on the Sixers to more of a role player for the Grizz and then with the Warriors.
Could had been interesting if he guarded Jordan on his famous Cavs buzzer beater. Wished you had said what injuries did he have with the clippers, especially the season ending one. PS. What's actually never mentioned is Ron had a speech impediment, he stuttered, I was told by a friend that lived in ohio during the 80's, and was a big sports fan, that it was pretty bad during his college days, could had been a big reason he fell in the draft, he would be a butt of jokes if he was picked higher or went to a major market, it's my understanding he got better with it over the years in the NBA but I was told if he ever got angry, it was known to come back, even during his bulls days.
As a Bulls fan I hated Harp. He had tremendous defense and could go coast to coast at any time given minute. But all around, he was great. That Cavs team was loaded. So happy for him to become a champion with the Bulls and Lakers.
Harper's last year with the Clippers he averaged 20 ppg. The Bulls didn't sign him to a 5-year contract to be a 7 ppg "role player". Prior to Harper's first year with the Bulls, their only double digit scorers were Pippen, Kukoc & BJ Armstrong. Horace Grant departed for Orlando & Pippen was nearly traded to the Sonics for Kemp. I imagine Jerry Krause envisioned Harper coming close to at least matching Grant's average (15 ppg) his last year with the Bulls. That didn't happen. Harper's slashing style didn't really fit the triangle and he lost playing time as the 1994-95 season wore on, even before Jordan returned. Jordan coming back prevented Harper from being lumped in with some of the biggest free agent busts of all-time. Harper adapted well to his "supporting" role on the Bulls' second 3-peat, but that certainly wasn't the original plan.
It baffles me on how the Cavs let Harper go, the biggest problem that kept them away from being a contender was defending Jordan, Craig Ehlo was considered a good defender but Harper was leagues above him on perimeter defense.
Ron Harper by that time wasn't the same Cavs or Clippers player, but his deffensive ability came in point. This was the time Bulls kind of 'preserve' Jordan's energy on the defensive end, being Harper the one who guards players like Miller, to name just one. Pippen and Harper were the defensive doberman in the second threepeat run
1998 NBA Finals Game 6. Ron Harper shoots three clearly after buzzer and Dick Bavetta counts it. Howard Eisley shoots 2-pointer clearly before the buzzer and Dick Bavetta waves it off. Tim Donaghly being interviewed by the FBI is asked, "Who else was throwing games while you were as ref for the NBA". Tim, "Dick Bavetta". FBI ask, "Can you tell us of games that he threw?" Tim then lists off several games including Game 6 1998 NBA finals. 2016 Tim Donahy during podcast states once again the 1998 NBA Finals Game 6 was thrown by Dick and pointed out the exact two calls that I stated at the beginning of my comment.
Ron Harper was not a role player on the Bulls. He took the other team's #1 guard on defense to allow Jordan to freelance. Rodman gets credit for his defense and rebounding, but Harper was just as important. The Bulls don't win 3 championships without Ron Harper. He is one of the most under rated players in NBA history.
This video is just another reason as to why I feel the Bulls would be even more dominant today. They had too many players that could flourish in an uptempo open court style like that which is played today. Jordan, Pippen, Kukoc, and Harper all would benefit from today's more free flowing game as opposed to the lame clogging slow paced era they dominated. And because of all that length, the Bulls would be even better defensively as well. Harper was a 20 ppg scorer who took a role as defender on the Bulls because that's what was need. He could have gone out and averaged 20ppg in another situation.
You had to be one of the best players ever to dominate 90s basketball. It was a war and Harper dominated before injuries. He was a great defender and would have avg. 20+ for his career if not for injuries making him a role player.
Every starter on the Bulls second 3 peat was an all star or a great player, Luc Longley was the greatest player to ever come out of Australia and first to play in the NBA. Kukoc was a European god, Ron Harper was an elite player prior to freak injury, Rodman classic Detroit bad boy, almost 5 all stars starting for the Bulls
There are things most people don't know about Ronnie. Not only was he integral on 3 championship teams, Ronnie did it while suffering through a disability. Ronnie was awesome, why do you All think Mike, Scottie, Dennis, and Phil loved him so much.
Ron didn’t reinvent his defensive game, it was there from the start. He has 5 rings, the same as Kobe, one less than Jordan. Stutter not a problem, knee problem not a problem. He and Jordan got hurt early, and never again. I see why Jordan would love to have Ron on his team, cause he gave the entire bulls team the business with 4 blocks 😂 several steals 😂 10 rebounds 😂 Steve Kerr 😂 and 30 points 😂 the Bulls needed them 96-98 😂 then Kobe needed him 😂 🎉🎉🎉 I’m proud of Harp 😊 he deserves all the flowers
He should be a HOFER 5 Chips as a starter. B4 then, basically 20/5/5 for his career. Ppl don't realize he won 5 out of 6 years. If he would've stayed Harp would've won 6. 2 3 peats 2 different teams

Ron Gave everyone the Business, before his injuries and was the star player for Cleveland Cavaliers.
I'm gonna need someone to link that funky disco intro music because it is straight fire.
Thanks for doing this..one of rhe reasons i wore number 9 is because I'm of this guy..very under rated but those who know knew his real value
A Bull or not i respected this man very underrated with him MJ and Pippen together it was over for everyone lol
Ron Harper was an outstanding player, I enjoyed watching him play as a Cavalier and as a Bull. And I say this a Bulls fan.
I love Ron Harper. Very humble guy
Ron harper, class act and great ball player. Totally underrated. Besides, if big L rap about you, you know you good
Great video Harp was outstanding man and player
Explain this to me: As you all know: Born in Seattle in 1973, Sonics and Blazers fan. Ron Harper, Defense: 1991-92: Defense: C. 1992-93, 1993-94, and 1994-95: Defense: D. Yet, in 1995-96, Defense: A+. HOW did Ron Harper transform from "Harper's defense is embarrassing. He's often not in the same zip code as his man."
Ron harper a real true champion, thank you for this video
I remember him more as a clipper than a "secret bull star"
Triangle offence allegedly supposes that every top of the triangle 📐 can shoot, but it's not the Bulls' case.
i was born in 1996 and i remember Ron Harper from that Kenan and Kel episode whe gets an injury because Kel spilled Orange Soda on the floor lol
Ron was not underrated, we know who he is and what he has done. He da man.
Beast before the injury. Before that Ron could hold his own with anybody easily. Great all around 2 guard
Harper adapted well to his "supporting" role on the Bulls' second 3-peat, but that certainly wasn't the original plan.
he was loyal too, he was ready to defend his teamates at a moments notice.
Mark Price was a beast to
It baffles me on how the Cavs let Harper go, the biggest problem that kept them away from being a contender was defending Jordan, Craig Ehlo was considered a good defender but Harper was leagues above him on perimeter defense.
Ron deserves tons of credit for completely becoming unselfish and changing his game to win titles.
Nice to see some Ron Harper love. He adapted. He's got 5.
Ron Harper was a great player who took a backseat role . It is under rated the step down he took to role fill . It paid off though.
The Bulls may not have had 4 all stars. But they had Superman, Batman, Rodman, and Harpman
Though I think MJ won it for the Bulls in the 98 Finals, Ron Harper played great defense on John Stockton on the last play of the game.
Nothing but respect for Harper!
Imagine if Westbrook or Kyrie could do what Harper did. They would be rated higher and win more. Harper sacrificed a lot of the way he played but won.
ron was tha sh!t...eye lov'd dat mane when he play'd 4 clevelan'... eye'm a bulls fan, so eye saw all thoze rival games..so when he came 2 my bulls eye was supa glad
He is a legend
Very underrated player. Who knows what kind of star he would have been if he didn't blow out his knee. (typical luck of the Clippers) great defensive player and distributor
Ron Harper a great basketball player , however he was even a better man. His character spoke volumes through his basketball play.
Ron Harper was one of the most underatted players ever
He was terrific.
Definitely one of the unsung heroes of the late 90s Bulls
