    Our hospital... ruined... our radio station completely gone... as are other buildings... homes ruined or completely gone. Riverside Church was submerged... people missing... some passed away... water supply comprehensive... sewage plant destroyed...
    But want to thank the many volunteers who have come from as far away as Canada to help. And all our locals who are working so very hard trying to help everyone... love you all

      @@delilahskeppe3813Maybe? My Wife was home by herself last Friday morning when the Storm hit Stoney Creek and I was at work...Idk why I went in to work that day? But a little bit of a backstory about my Wife, she's from Iowa and if you don't know Iowa is considered part of Tornado Alley...She told me that it felt like small updrafts and downdrafts as well...Plus our house was being rocked. . she likened it to being shook...She actually believes that maybe a small vorticie happened...
      Besides you always hear about Hurricanes spawning Tornadoes..
      Very good plausibility that one or two touched down...

    I gotta say, Hurricane Helene will probably go down as one of the worst tropical cyclones in U.S. history. Idk what the final costs are and ironically NOAA’s NCEI is offline because their HQs are in Asheville, NC, but I won’t be surprised if Helene ends up having caused >$100 billion in damages.
    This was a disaster waiting to happen, mountain communities believe it or not extremely venerable to fresh water flooding. As we saw in Vermont during the July 2023 floods, the extreme topography amplifies orographic lifting, that part of the Southeast is already ecologically a temperate rainforest, and being cities like Asheville are in valleys at the feet of the mountains, water just cascades down.
    I really hope for a speedy recovery for all those affected. I wish I could do something to help my fellow Americans. The best I can do is donate and spread the word.
    I know Americans are pretty divided right now, but I hope those in Helene’s path can unite as communities and work together collectively to rebuild. Mother Nature spares no one, including the scientists that study her and regardless of what you believe at a personal level.
    But I am extremely thankful for the meteorologists at NOAA. The NWS and NHC forecasts were spot on and definitely saved many more lives from being lost.
    And thank you for this footage, many Americans, even in NC, I’m sure are unaware how apocalyptic the scene in Western NC, Eastern TN, and Northern GA are.

    Did a dam break or was this the result of 30” rain

    • @McTwistedTwisties
      @McTwistedTwisties 3 місяці тому +5

      No dam truly broke. But some dams did experience types of failure. Water coming out from the bottom (like a hydroplant or walled dam), over topping the dam (dam is filled and can't hold more water), or a channel of water was formed around the dam. Rarely do dams, levies, and spillways suffer from complete failures.

      There isn't a dam above Erwin. It's farther down the Nolichuky. I heard the wall of water that hit the Chestoa area first was close to 50 ft high. Chestoa bridge was the first concrete structure in its path, no longer. I spread out across the low lying farms, then as it curved, spread out across the valley. The high mountain walls created a monster. I don't see any way of preventing this from happening in the future, except flood walls in the low sections for better containmnent.
