Until the 19th century you self identified as Bulgarians, then a Bulgarian revolutionary independence movement force all Bulgarians living in Macedonia to self identify as 'Macedonians' due to leftist political factors. There is NO CONNECTION with the ancient Greek tribe of Macedonians from ancient Macedonia in northern Greece.

Ancient Macedonian coins with Alexander on them and his name written in Greek. He spread the Greek language and civilization to all the countries he conquered. His father Philippos and Alexander the 1st participated in the Olympics where ONLY Greeks could participate. It was forbidden for anyone else who wasn't Greek.
