  • Join us for a fun adventure in central Washington as we hunt for some thundereggs! This is a great spot, but I wouldn't really say it's for the beginner rockhound since you need a good number of tools to work the clay, and when you do get the prized thunderegg you really need a saw to cut it open.

    Twenty years ago I went to Arizona for a a Workshop, In a souvenirs store I found something identified as geode comes in a zipper bag cost me 5.99, still have the price . In a paper that comes inside , have the instructions for break it, in the bottom said that ancient people call geodes as thunder eggs . This week I rescue it from the place was stored and a conflict rise: break or not break it. I leave it. Then..... you share this awesome video.... ohhh my God!!! How beautiful are those rocks inside, and I understand that the one that I have is indeed a thunder egg, but I’m not sure that is the same that a geode, and definitely break it is not the right decision, I need cut it with maybe a tile saw, I need buy one in Home Depot!!!! Thanks for share !

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  4 роки тому +3

      What a cool story. So a Thunderegg, which are technically known as lithophysae are typically found with solid or near-solid cores of chalcedony or agate, whereas geodes are relatively hollow inside with thinner layers of quartz crystals. A Thunderegg can be a Geode but not the other way around. If you rock feel relatively lightweight for the size and there for hallow its like a Geode, people do crack them with hammer or for a big one a geode cracking chain.

    Good morning. Love your videos. I once spent a summer cutting t-eggs bought in a large parcel. Eddy bed and Killer Green. Amazing scenic pictures! If you are looking for different source, The Hauser Geode beds, near Blythe CA, have many different mineralizations. I recently live cut, during a Zoom class meeting of fifth graders, a 2-in. that had amethyst crystals. HUGE surprise! The students at my school are well aware of my love for digging and collecting. In the muted video, they saw me jumping up and down with excitement! It's this part of spreading the knowledge and joy of discovery that has our school's children bringing me samples from their yards for identification and gifts. Always make a big deal about their finds. I use academic vocabulary and find the older students repeating this to other students in sharing. Thank you for preparing videos that are academically helpful, technically pleasing, and, frankly, the best "movies" on UA-cam. ;)

    Went up there primarily for a dirtbike ride but had enough time to locate and surface pick the area. Ended up with a few whole ones baseball sized, a few halves, and a bunch of random pieces. After tumbling the small ones, about grape sized partials, it broke the outside rock off and shows the outside of them and they look just like eggs, shape color and even almost texture. So I like the small ones a lot too, but I have one question is there a way to remove the outer rock from the bigger eggs to expose the smooth white outside on the bigger pieces? Like vinegar or citric acid? I'm too scared to try and end up ruining them lol. But uh thanks for all the information on the spot, I'ma get out there with tools and see what I can unearth

      You're welcome. So the area is open for camping anywhere you like but a trailer will limit you. Down by the river there's many spots to camp but they seem to fill up fast on the weekend with people that have RVs, trailers, and dirt bikes...etc. You could take a small trailer up to this parking area but beyond that point on all the roads you will not be able to turn it around.

I found a couple of holes that were already dug out over there over there but no luck finding any finding any thunder eggs .we went there so late in the day it was kind of an exploration day to see if we could find your spot. I appreciate you sharing your locations. I really appreciate it. the funny thing is even if you do share where you are how many people are really gonna go there

    Thanks for the hole info, we made it a little bigger a few days ago and got a few nuts from it (we call them thunder nuts intermittently). Question though. Did you use a wet polisher on those faces or does your saw just leave them that smooth? I am using a 7" tile saw (water) and its a challenge to make straight cuts on rocks with any curvature. Then using the wet polisher it takes some real effort, technique and time to get it to a polished glass finish because those diamond pads remove so little material.

    • @CurrentlyRockhounding
      @CurrentlyRockhounding  4 роки тому +1

      I'm glad you got up there for some Thundereggs! Those are how they come off my oil saw. There are some tricks to making flat, straight, smooth cuts on the tile saw which I think are too much to try and describe in a comment but Ill make a video at some point here on the subject. The polishing pads are really meant for polishing and not grinding out rough marks left by a tile saw blade gouging the face which is what I think the issue is that you're having.

    • @kylenicolls1321
      @kylenicolls1321 4 роки тому

      @@CurrentlyRockhounding Lol, I learned that. Takes some time to get rid of the saw lines. Sounds like I need a purpose built saw, thats a really nice finish. BTW I live a few blocks from the Bombing Range Rd Fire station spot. The good chunk (south east quarter of that undeveloped square) is posted no trespassing now as of a few weeks ago. There is state/gov land that borders it (the pit to the north 50 yards) that is still game, but no more rummaging through the excavation turnover (at least at the present).

      I could only imagine. Great work keep it up. How many spots in Oregon do you know to find thundereggs. Being that the Richardson ranch doesn’t allow digging anymore and lucky strike closes as well and I guess the dig site in friend Oregon closed as well. Kind of weird they all shut down so soon to one another. Kind of a big blow to a lot of rockhounders like me and you.
