- Most Unusual Railroad Diamond In Ohio! Trains Don't Ride On The Rails! See How That Is Possible. 2 Trains Pass Perfect Timing Head To Head At 5 Track Railroad Crossing. CSX Spirt Of Our Armed Forces Locomotive Crosses The Railroad Diamonds In Greenwich Ohio. 6 Trains On The Day Of The Eclipse this vid. Some Of The Eclipse Darkness Is In This Video. See My Part 1 Video Of A Train Going Through The Eclipse Here.
Have you ever heard of this type of railroad diamond? It is called a Flange Bearing Frog Diamond ( FBF ). I show the diamond up close and explain how it works. The wheels on the freight cars and locomotives do not touch the rails. The flanges support the train going over the railroad diamonds as I explain and show in the video. This prevents maintenance costs and reduces noise. I have shown One Way Low Speed ( OWLS ) diamonds in previous videos from Indiana and Ohio. This is different than those and uses replacement bars that are cheap and easy to replace. I show those also.
This video shows the CSX commemorative locomotive 1776, The Spirit Of Our Armed Forces leading a coke train over the diamonds. That was a pretty cool catch.
Highlights of the video show 2 trains approaching at the same time in opposite directions and passing right next to the diamonds. We also see the old New York Central Railroad signals that are still in use. We also see a closeup of the rail and evidence of a recent passing of a rail grinder. I rode up here with Scott @1960gambit. We came up here to film a train passing during the Eclipse 2024. We actually got lucky and filmed a train at the perfect time during the Eclipse. That is Part 1 for this video and is a must see. At the end of this video there is a link to that video.
We also see the Live Action Pets doing their thing and we see the slide show that comes from this video.
Filmed Monday, April 8, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

I love the sound the train makes going over the diamond. I can listen to that all day and all night and sleep soundly in between. It’s very moving to see how much feeling you had for Mark, Jaw Tooth. Rest In Peace, Shoestring.
And that's why Jawtooth is the GOAT
Thanks for remembering hobo shoestring was a veteran, it made the 1776 loco more moving in relationship to his passing. I hope that most of your viewers will take time to revisit shoestrings channel to remember how much of a fun filled person he was even when he was feeling down.
I hope that his cousin can figure out how to get into his UA-cam account and release the last video that Mark was working on. He was a lot of fun to be with
I'm sorry if I sound ignorant. When did Shoestring pass.
@@certeric33 About a month ago, he was turned away from an emergency room with obvious confusion problems and was found days later drowned in a lake behind his apartment complex. Totally avoidable death.
The lift frogs reduce the noise but more so the maintenance on the diamond, the lifting bar is a wearable part cheaper to replace. As for the flanges they are not on long enough to sustain any noticeable wear or damage the wheels will wear out before the flanges will. The inside edge of the frog has a small lip that will keep the wheels in line so no need for speed restrictions, they have been installed alot on low traffic lines that cross busy lines to reduce maintenance costs.
One set of tracks will have a speed reduction. I go over them every day!
The detail about the newer approach of the diamond construction is was very interesting, thanks for showing that and explaining how they transfer the load to the flange.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for the birthday greeting to my grandson JT! He loved it!!!
Be interesting to see the long term effects on the wheel flanges.
That’s what I was thinking..putting weight where it’s not meant to be.🧐
Would love to know that myself, but I imagine it's a bit of "which is worse" and "which costs less"? Do you want your wheels breaking because the flange gives up after being stressed carrying the weight of the car and load albeit for a very short amount of time, or do you want your wheels breaking because they're slamming into the diamond, which also carries the extra cost burden of also having to regularly replace the diamond? All of which can be prevented with regular inspections. I'd think the gradual transition onto the flange is much less stress and prone to breakage than steel wheel slamming up against sharp edge of steel rail diamond.
As JT said, these diamonds are *experimental*. The railroad is asking the same kind of questions. Although I expect the flange wear is not that big a deal. The flanges are pretty stout, and keep in mind that the normal contact patch between wheel and rail is about the size of a US dime, so there shouldn't be that much difference. Many years ago (as part of a college project) we used an old freight car wheel as a flywheel for some energy storage. That single wheel weighed over 600 pounds, and most of that was in the rim area. (It made a really good flywheel.) So the area around the flange is well supported. And everything that @Stant123 said is on the money.
Everyone have A great Day thanks J.T.🎉😂
Thank you for this second video from your trip to Greenwich, Ohio on 8 April 2024, Jaw Tooth! The flange bearing frog diamond is used on the train line that sees the least traffic. That type of diamond would not work at the Rochelle, Illinois crossing of the Union Pacific and BNSF. That was a great train meet of the two trains on the curve. That was a nice catch of CSX's engine #1776, The Spirit of Our Armed Forces" commemorative unit.
So exactly why wouldn't the flange frog diamond not work at the other RR crossing in Rochelle Illinois?....isn't a crossing just a crossing?
@@sanddabz5635 the information that I found on the internet seemed to indicate that flange bearing frog was used in locations where one of the rail lines has less traffic than the other line. I have no idea what that means in actual number of trains passing over the diamond. At Rochelle, Illinois you have two major railroads running trains on double track mainlines. At Greenwich, Ohio you have a single-track line crossing a double-track mainline.

I see. Makes sense now.
Cheers!
Great video JT, thanks for showing closeups of diamonds. RIP Shoestring 🙏🙏🙏
Best part of the show. Puppies &Trains? Thanks!
You bet!
The diamonds aren't as loud as normal ones.
Right. One of the claimed advantages of the FBF is that it eliminates the pounding as the wheel goes across the gap in the running surface of the rail. Reduced noise, reduced impact loading on the rolling stock, and reduced wear on the rail head.
Always look forward to another JT video makes my day thanks for the awesome quality as always and have a good day from Scotland 😊
Thanks, you too! I appreciate it
@@JawTooth Your welcome JT keep up the good work 😉👍
After the short intermodal there was a good CSX mixed freight. It was over 100 cars and included UN 3257, heated liquid (such as asphalt), UN 1077, propylene, and UN 2448, molten sulfur. Great catch, JT! 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
I just love watching trains go by.
Me too. lol
Thanks Jaw Tooth, great close-up of the diamond action. Have a Wonderful day, my Friend.
Hey Jaw Tooth, I don't know if you noticed this or not, but on that first train going over the Diamonds, that wasn't just an ordinary horn salute, because one of the railfans had a high-pitched air horn and did a "shave and a haircut", to which the Engineer responded with "two bits".
Another great JT video to start the day!..It did seem like less clanging and banging on the diamond. Now it's time to queue up an old Shoestring video!
"Which train do I start with?" I wish I had to make hard decisions like that 😁
Thanks for showing the new-fashioned diamond crossing, and take care 👍
You're such a fashionista.
Hat shirt combination is a statement !
Great vid.
Haha I was thinking the same
Wow, thank you!
I really like these railroad intersection diamonds
Wow nice shot of intermodal and autorack train meet up how cool to see csx emd sd70mac😊❤
Let me try to guest STN stands for steelton 🤔🤔🤔
STN = Steelton, PA
Men like Diamonds 😍 to.good show!have a fun day J.T. Thanks 👍
Yes, my best friend lol
I really like the shot of the train coming toward us around the curve, JT! 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤
Great video. It's cool to see them still using those 5 unit 48 foot container cars. I always look for them in your videos. Thanks for being there.
As always...🙏👍 Safe travels Brian !..
Thanks, will do!
Nice job
Thanks!
It's called a lift frog. Designed to eliminate the tremendous vibration of traditional frogs. Usually requires a slower speed as well.
Hooray, a working FRED, finally on the 1776 locomotive train!
Always interesting! Nothing like the sound and feel of the trains, comes right through like we're there! Thanks friend !!!!
Thanks for watching!
Awesome vid of 2 CSX trains passing. Please let us know when auto racks are loaded or are empty. Stay save.
I love seeing your pets at the end of every video! Today's was fabulous as usual. No surprise there!!! 😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤
Great location lots of freight action great information on that diamond great video thanks Brian
Thanks 👍
nice mate
Thanks 👍
Nice closeup of the diamonds, big Coke train with CSX Military GE and sunset!🛤🚂
Hey JT, I appreciate the shout out brother that really means a lot to me man but anyway, brother another awesome video and I too think a lot about shoestring always wanted to sit around a hobo campfire with him at night and just listen to all of his train stories cause I bet you would be there all night but anyway, my friend as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and we’ll catch you on the next one
Glad you liked it! Shoestring was going to let me make a long interview video of him this summer. We had plans for videos. It is sad and now all that history and all those stories are gone and will never be told. He was a great guy.
I heard your shout out and I don't know who you are, but your response to JT was very reflective and nice.
@@JawTooth
That would've been something really neat to hear. It's special that you say Shoestring was a great guy, we learned so much about him through you.
RIP Shoestring.
@@sanddabz5635 I wish I could have had just one more summer to hang out with him. We had been talking about making videos together this summer
Amazing videos Jaw Tooth keep up the good work
Yes, Brian does put out GREAT train videos.
Glad you like them!
Kind of surprised the flange can hold that weight.
The flanges are part of the wheels and are just as strong as the rest of the wheel.
Great catches and awesome video
Thank you very much!
Hey JawTooth
Shout out to Mrs JawTooth 👌👌
Another great video
Hey, thanks!
One thing I like about your videos is that you are able to show us many of the car markings while a number of others don't. I've gotten interested in checking out what some of these cars, tankers in particular that are dedicated to such things as "Molten Sulfur" and "Non-Odorized Liquified Petroleum Gas." I also check cars on the rare occasion I can see them in person, marked for "Cooking Oil" and various kinds of food products like "Corn Syrup." And then there are the cars, flats in particular where we can see those loads.
I originally came for the locomotives and ended up staying for the rest. 😄
Great catch with all the trains Brian I like it.
Thank you very much!
@@JawTooth You're very welcome, Brian.
Cool to see something new, thanks 😊😎👌👍!
Yeah.... Mark (Shoestring) gave us a different perspective of railroad life. I miss his videos too. You and the other railfans just dont know how much some of us appreciate your efforts!!! Its like a close friend takin you on a trip with them!!! Keep it up!! Kudos WF😊
I wish I could have had at least one more summer to film with Mark. We had some big plans . He was a great person
Good Thursday morning JT, enjoying the video with a hot cup of coffee. Have a good rest of your day 🙏🏻
Good morning!
Awesome explanation on that new style of diamond Jawtooth! I love learning new things about the railroad! Thanks for sharing it with us!👍
UP has one of those diamonds (or something similar) in Sacramento where the lead to the state railroad museum crosses the mains but, to my knowledge, it's only the museum lead that rides on the flanges. They used to build the lead temporarily over the mains when needed but that became a chore with the time limitations. I'm kinda surprised there isn't a significant speed restriction over that.
My birthday is May 11. I look forward to looking at your train videos every day. I’m from Connecticut and I have Providence and Worcester Railroad go right behind my house.
Happy birthday
I really like seeing the diamond tracks and this is a really great looking
one here and seeing the locomotive with the 1776 Armed Forces coke train going over the diamonds, everything was great as always and
i liked hearing more updates about Shoestring/Mark and of course
your awesome live action pets Chessie, Loki, Brandi and Norfy with
the train slide showap and another fantastic video thanks Jaw Tooth.

I know what you mean. My best friend went and got himself killed in a car accident almost a year ago. We had plans of traveling where we wanted to go, just waiting on the children to grow up. I think Mark, you, me, all of us think tomorrow is a given. It's not. It's a gift and we should be grateful. Keep up the good work...
Another great vid, JT - nothing like the sound of trains on a spring day! Angles are good, the 'golden hour' photography is even better.
That horse drawn carraige was moving along at a pretty good clip.
They were booking with one horse power
…pretty good clip…clop…
Horn salutes, head to head train meet and my favorite “Pride of service “ locomotive, CSX 1776. Nice angle on 1776 JT. You’re so cool.👍🏼
Thank you very much!
Cool JT. Beautiful sunset, love the diamonds, two trains passing. I like it when you show us stuff from the area like how these diamonds work and info on the rails. The best! R. I. P. Shoestring 😢. ❤
Thanks 👍

Thanks JT great shot at the diamond
Take the time to enjoy the memories you made with Mark. Don't regret what could have been, but remember the good times you had. I think thats the way Mark would have preferred. I pray God gives you the grace to get over his passing. 😢😢❤❤
Lots of good rail fanning there.
Good seeing you, God bless my friend.
You too
Extra cool they have one of those FBD's at Ocala, FL,the ACL/SAL grade crossing.
Alright an SD 70 Mac! Love the EMD locos, the best ever and an awesome RS3L on the armed forces loco😊😊😊
My grandfather and members of his family worked on the old railroad in Nova Scotia. It was called the dominion Atlantic railway …once everything changed to diesel. It was never quite the same I remember him telling me….I guess they have pretty much torn up all the track In my province, except for the big rail yard and mainline that leaves Halifax with IM trains from the container port and passenger service to montreal…..
I am glad I found your videos because as a kid we had trains all across the province and I grew up next to the train station. We had what was called a day liner. It went between Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Halifax, Nova Scotia every day, and it left at 7 AM so we do have a rail history here. but unfortunately, trains are basically gone.
You do a great job with your videos and I found you while watching Shoestrings videos.
Keep up the great work
Jon
Nice horn salutes for the railfans !

Thank you for calling out the DOT placard numbers. I find keeping track of them interesting.

Good Morning Jaw Tooth. Yesterday morning a UP intermodel train derailed. Twenty four cars on ground, no injury. A thunder storm with 80 mph wind hit the train.
Love rhythm of the trains crossing the diamond..
Me too

You didn't just catch the train coming over the diamond on that 1776. You caught that beautiful sunset gave it an almost American feel about it.
CSX trains always look so neat and clean equipment. Most boxcar look new!
It does!
Great video JT. Like those new diamonds cool idea. Still has the clicky clack i love.

Very interesting video tonight, watched the whole thing.
Much appreciated!
I thought about you right away when I heard of his gone missing I followed him he had a great knowledge of the railroad I enjoyed your meeting up with him every now and again I’m sorry for his passing.
