    Besides the new edger, “Chewy” is my favorite piece of equipment in your sawmill! It is a durable, low-maintenance piece of equipment that saves enormous amounts of sawing time and labor. Keep everything about “Chewy” just the way it is. Thanks Mark and Eddie for another great visit to the sawmill!

    If folks don't like Chewy they need to get on the short end of a long hook and turn logs by hand for a while. Happy weekend Guys and God Bless.

    Nov. 2018..an EF0 hit my neighborhood and took down 4 oaks in my yard. I tried to give it away as firewood, very few takers. Time goes by and I decide to just cut it up and burn it. Made the 1st cut and the wood had spalted a bit. It stopped me in my tracks, no way I'm going to burn this. My wife said, "Why don't you build a butcher block top for the island? (in my kitchen)" That wood has turned into my woodworking hobby money pit, but MAN I love it! That hobby turned into watching a guy in Pennsylvania with a sawmill cutting the wood (on a much larger scale) like I was trying to do on a used Craftsman band saw. That guy in Pennsylvania got me to buy my own sawmill so I can make my own boards for my woodworking projects. So in a roundabout way, spalted wood led me to your channel. Have watched every video since.

    Without the shag bark, and with the twisting on the outside of the log, it almost looks like Eucalyptus, something you won't see in Pennsylvania. Plentiful out here in California as wind breaks in agriculture areas. Generally not cut for lumber, but is used as firewood when cut at all. Thanks for the videos, yours and Eddies. Jon

    That is some beautiful spalted lumber. The other side to the "no one calls you back about orders" is then you turn around and get inundated with orders. The old feast or famine problem. During these down time between orders, you could also get caught up on making dunnage for the mill, more slab wood boxes (just cut the lumber) with whatever really ugly worthless logs that are in inventory.

    Sycamore maple tree bark is smooth and gray. As the maple tree matures, the bark becomes rougher and scaly. As with most species of sycamore or maple trees, the bark peels, giving the trunk a patchy appearance. It’s sycamore the “yellowing” on the 2” slabs gives it away. Maple (Species of Acer) will remain more whitish even if heavily spalted.

    I’m baffled. I’ve been subbed for ages and still don’t understand why you put the dogs so close to the edge when you’re sawing several inches from them? Surely it’s safer to have them further from the edge for a “meatier” grip? Great channels both you and T.H.E Eddy. Thanks.

    Hi Mark, great little video. I have a question on sawmills. Your sawmill cuts from right to left but other videos of sawmills cut from left to right. Is there any advantages in one over the other or is it just a personal preference? Could you change the direction on yours if you wanted?

    • @markgalicic7788
      @markgalicic7788  7 місяців тому

      we have a right hand mill but I have never ran a left hand mill , you cant change the direction of a mill without a lot of modification such as changing the saw guide and board splitter and if it was a handset mill you would have to move the set works.

      fungi in the log.

    • @PScons
      @PScons 6 місяців тому

      As a tree starts the dying process, fungi is introduced to the blood veins in the wood. That produces the beautiful black striping in the grain. Cutting spalted wood can be tricky. There's a perfect period of when to cut it. Too soon and there will not be much spalt. Too late and the fungi will have made the wood mushy (rotten). Cutting spalted wood is a rare occasion.

    I must apologize for not watching your videos. UA-cam’s ad policy has obviously changed many times without consultation or negotiation. Currently UA-cam is making me watch two 15 second ads at 7 1/2 minute intervals. previously, I had the option to skip the ads after five seconds. This is not the case anymore. Of course I could pay UA-cam $19 a month for ad free versions. Please understand that I do not do this because UA-cam has stopped sharing income with various Content Creators that I enjoy watching. Additionally, UA-cam has decided to give grief to various Content Creators, that I watch, for telling the truth.
    I have sent a complaint to UA-cam via one method that I have found. In this complaint, I told UA-cam that their greed was showing, and that their selfishness was rampant. Please understand that your channel is not a waste of my time. The ads UA-cam forces on me are a waste of my time and headspace.
