  • The late great Willie P. Bennett appeared on VisionTV's "Listen Up!" in 1995, talking about his songwriting, performing, and life. In this first part, he also performs the song medley "Red Dress/Why'd I Go Zydeco?".
This video was processed from a VHS videotape recording made from a cable broadcast. Unfortunately, at one point during the song, the cable signal dropped out. But it's much, much better than nothing. Enjoy.

I was lucky to know Willie, dragged him home from a bar, woke up my wife. Played Backgammon and emptied out booze cupboard. We still have a picture of his cowboy boots in the hall. Had tickets for his last show that he was booked for at the Princess Cinema. One of the best harp players I ever heard, and he was a song writer that will always survive the fog of time. I still hope his family will release a compilation of his material. You should drag out and play "Blue Valentine" every Valentine's Day. I breaks my heart.

After seeing him at Smale's Pace(sp?) in London in the early 70's I spent a lot of time hitchhiking in Canada and around the world, and everytime I was stuck someplace for any length of time I would sing. "Standing by a midnight highway" was my go to song when nobody would stop-it didn't always result in a ride, but I always felt better for singing it. RIP Willy

Your intro, 'The late great...' certainly applies in this case.

“People are always allowing artists to fall off the edge. I think that sometimes that’s why there are artists and creative people, is so that people that are afraid to go to the edge, just watch them fall off the edge and everybody goes, ‘Oh poor guy!’, or when he bounces back up they go, ‘Oh amazing! A comeback!’ or whatever. Creative people are always dancing around that edge, and they always will be whether they go out and get straight jobs or not, their minds are always dancing on that edge.” Miss you man.

Well Willie I for one am awfully glad you did decide to write songs and perform them as few others ever have. And yeah Bone Shaker I know what you mean. Willie's classic lines and tunes have been rolling around in my head for more years than I care to admit to and what a comfort they've been. Once I heard him I never could get enough. Thank god he recorded as many great songs as he did. RIP Willie Bennett.
