1983 TOMYTRONIC 3D Game with STRANGE FAULT - Trying to FIX

  • Hi, in this video today I attempt to fix a broken TOMY TRONIC 3D Thundering Turbo game from 1983, looking online it looks like this was the first 3D hardware for home users.
    It was sent in by Mike from 1upGamingLimited over on eBay. It has a very strange fault in that every time the accelerator is pressed, it will not move left BUT when the accelerator is not pressed, left works fine??? The right button works perfectly whether or not the accelerator is pressed.
    Let's open it up to see what could be causing this.
    If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

    Had a few of these as a kid. By 1990 you could pick them up for about £1 second hand. Sure they're little more than a glorified game and watch with a lens assembly but as a 5 year old I thought it was the coolest thing ever. They definitely deserve a bigger mention in the history of VR.

    Top tip, instead of using the wire mesh, take ordinary tissue paper, separate the ply, dab some superglue on to the part you want to fix, cut and shape a thin piece of the paper and apply it over the plastic part letting the glue absorb into it. It will dry hard and take the shape of the part it is resting on. Incredibly useful when reinforcing broken plastic parts like in your case.

  • @TheBackdrafter80
    @TheBackdrafter80 3 роки тому

    @My Mate VINCE: 30:04 regarding that broken catch. Have you ever tried "glueing" plastics with acetone? It melts the surface of certain types of plastics and with a little drop of acetone you can melt/weld little pieces back on. Solid as a rock and a lot cleaner than with a soldering iron. You can even add some extra material that you cut of somewhere else on the case to make it even stronger than when it was new. On some plastics it doesn't work. But then you can't ruin anything, so it's always worth a try. The stuff that i confirmed it not working on is pe, pte and petg. But it's working great on many cases/covers of electronics (e.g. keyboards) since those are often made of abs or something similar. Try first on some scrap. It's tricky if you use too much aceton and stuff gets out of shape, but you will quickly learn to handle it. Some people even mix acetone with scrap abs to get more of a glue-like consistency.
    Please comment or like if it worked for you.

I just used super glue on it held it for 15 minutes then left it a day before trying it and it is solid and has been for about 4 years, you wouldn't know it was broken. It might be because I left it for longer than you before trying it, or it could be different type/newer plastic.
