- Dr. Robert A. Jonas is a Christian who has been leading Christian-Buddhist retreats for over 30 years at the Empty Bell sanctuary. He is trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy (Harvard), followed by a post-Doc in contemplative/mystical Christianity at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA. He is a father and grandfather, and an environmental activist. In this talk, Jonas reflects on his life as a Christian who has always wondered about St. Paul's "mind of Christ," and the Nicene Creed's discovery and declaration that God is a Holy Trinity. Where is this Trinity? Not out there in a heaven apart from us. Rather, the three dimensions of the Trinity are within our own awareness, if we know how to discover this deep, divine identity.
In the first quarter of this video, Jonas tells his personal story, of a journey that took him from a Lutheran upbringing in Wisconsin through a scary period when his parents became alcoholic and mutually abusive, then on his own as a Dartmouth undergraduate, a farmer, a Harvard doctoral graduate, a post-doc journey with Jesuits, many retreats in Buddhist traditions, and finally, 30 years as a Christian contemplative host at the Empty Bell retreat center in Massachusetts, at www.emptybell.org His fourth book, My Dear Far-Nearness: The Holy Trinity as Spiritual Practice (Orbis Books, 2002), locates the Trinity within our awareness, as three sacred, evolving dimensions of practice.
