Haven't listened to the podcast yet. Just started. But I was at Saratoga on Sept 1. Side note. I was supposed to be there in 1991. With my older brother. But my Mother said NO at the last minute. I was 10 so maybe she made the right call...ha. We grew up in Albany. So, he took me to this show on Sept as a surprise. He flew in from California where he's lived for over 20 years. Just to take me.
In short, the show was phenomenal. I think it was the smallest venue they've played since this Tour began in 2016. Besides the Troubadour. We had seats not far from the stage. But even on the lawn you can see very well. It's a great place to see a show.
My expectations were very low for Axl's voice. Because in my view he lost his ability to sing for the most part. Around 2012. I don't buy that it's old age. Or from singing as powerfully as he did in the 90's and mid 2000's. Although, I'm sure that didn't help. I believe something broke. Within his vocal chords. Nasal passages. I don't know. But something broke. It was a pretty abrupt change around 2012. It's gotten worse over the last 6 years. He can still sound OK in SOME small parts of SOME songs. But. No matter. He's my favorite singer in my favorite band. I buy whatever new music they release and probably go see them again.
That said. He sounded great! Keeping in mind my expectations. He told us that 2 nights prior he was throwing up on stage in between songs. And that he apologized for his voice. Said it comes and goes (since all the throwing up). During Civil War he surprised himself during that monster scream he does. Joking in the middle of doing the scream. Making a gesture with his hands. Like "See! I don't know how I'm doing this right now!". You could see him looking around all thru the show. Looking at people in the eye all thru the venue. Smiling. Dude was taking it all in.
Slash BLEW everyone away. Mostly that's what I heard walking thru the crowd after the show. How incredible Slash was. Richard Fortus as well. I mean, the entire band sounded amazing. And again being such a small venue made it so special. Axl told a story about how he remembered "This place". From their show in 91. What I didn't know was that they also played there in 1988. Opening for Aerosmith.
There is no "phoning it in" with this band. Everyone of them gave it their all. 3 freaking hours. It's incredible.
I'm still buzzing from the show. The energy when it started. When Duff, Axl and Slash came on stage. That bass line from Duff (It's so Easy). Never gonna forget that. I was 10 in 1991 and knew every song and every lyric. I grew up (because of my older brother) from day 1 listening to them when Appetite was released. 35 years or so. All the MTV videos. MTV News interviews. I remember the LIVE AT THE RITZ show and being terrified of Axl and Slash. I couldn't understand how that guy with the Orange hair had all those different voices...ha. It was just surreal seeing them in person. Is my point. Absolutely unforgettable.

Yes, Axl, from what I heard, did have some sort of vocal cord injury? Not sure. But he sounded better than I expected!! We all loved the show and the band blew us away! I loved how Axl talked about the "medicinal aroma" gettin his voice better already, or something to that effect, lol. I saw them there in 1991 and I still love them just as much as I did then!! ❤️

At the 1991 Skid Row/Guns show, somebody got on stage and grabbed Axl, and he stopped for a minute, and then just started dancin like crazy!! Then somebody threw somethin at him and he said "If you see someone throwin somethin on stage, beat the fuck out out of em, because they're wastin your money, cuz I'll leave!" I was like no, dont leave!

Just catching up on episodes. My cousin’s band opened for GNR in Saratoga. You actually had him on your show a few times, Marc LaBelle.

Not sure who Paul is but I was interested in this podcast until he started his review. He got several material facts wrong and I shut it off. FYI…GNR has now been to SPAC 3x not 2. 88 w Aerosmith. 91 w Skid Row and then Sept 1. Dizzy never left the band. Played w Axl through the early 2000s even. Melissa has been w the band since they reunited in 16.

Paul is a fan I invited on to do a review, something I do with my listeners. They don't have to be experts, just passionate about GN'R.
