    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Betty's (Sally Field) high hopes for the Swiss Embassy to help her and her daughter leave Iran are quickly crushed when she learns of Iranian laws.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    In this docudrama based on true events, a mid-'80s Michigan housewife finds her life turned upside down when a vacation to Tehran with her Iranian husband turns into virtual imprisonment for her and her young daughter. Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is reluctant to visit the wartorn homeland of her doctor husband, Moody (Alfred Molina). But, depressed about the racism of the American medical establishment and pining for contact with his family, Moody convinces her to join him for a two-week jaunt. The Islamic fundamentalism and strange customs of Iran bewilder and frighten Betty and her daughter, Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). But nothing prepares her for Moody's announcement that the family will be remaining in Tehran indefinitely. Despite beatings and more pervasive psychological control from her husband and his relatives, Betty makes it to the Swiss embassy (there is no American ambassador at the time). There, she learns that as the wife of an Iranian, she is now automatically considered a citizen and that she has absolutely no parental rights over Mahtob in this country. Betty then endures several years as a virtual prisoner, escaping only with the help of Westernized Iranian friends. Based on the book by the real-life Mahmoody and William Hoffer, Not Without My Daughter was coincidentally released during the long build-up to 1991's Gulf War.

      Kaylee Almerzooq women have no rights there either BUT there is a US Embassy over there which is a huge difference. There’s no US Embassy in Iran so the United States has no power to help any AMERICAN there. But in Saudi Arabia, the US Embassy there would protect you. I would contact the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia about visiting. They should give you all the info you need. And, if and when you do visit, let the US Embassy know the dates of your stay in the country and where you’ll be staying. And they’ll keep track of you. Also, you should know where the US Embassy and all US Consulate buildings in Saudi Arabia are located. If anything happens, and it shouldn’t, but if anything did, you just need to get to the US Embassy. Once inside the US Embassy, past the gates, you’re officially on American soil (by local law) and the Saudi govt can’t touch you.
      You should be fine. But talk to the US Embassy in Saudi Arabia. That’s what they’re there for. If there was a US Embassy in Iran, the character in this movie would have been safe once she was on US Embassy property. But there wasn’t. Hence the two hour movie
      Rule of thumb: never travel to a country where there is no US Embassy. If there is no US Embassy, it’s because it is not safe and they have no authority to protect any Americans there. Most countries have a US Embassy unless it’s a country like Iran or North Korea

    Those wondering why the Swiss woman was so unhelpful and she could at least have given betty asylum in Switzerland, the answer is no she cannot. Asylum has to be in compliance with the International convention of refugees, i.e., for SPECIFIC reason like political persecution. This is a domestic matter -- Betty did not like her husband or his values and he beats her-- that is family law and therefore under Iranian jurisdiction, especially since she is [automatically] an Iranian citizen. Therefore the embassy had no rights to give her asylum, as it is a domestic family law matter. Although her story is painful it is a family law matter (and also criminal law in some countries), subject to local laws, or all battered wives worldwide can be deemed refugees entitled to resettlement in the west.

    I never quite understood this part of the story. Betty went to the US section of the Swiss embassy. I thought, once you’ve entered the grounds of an embassy, you are no longer considered to be, for this example, in Iran. I wonder if the Swiss consulate must of had provisions placed on them to keep operating in Iran. At the end of the movie, Betty and her daughter went to the US embassy in Turkey and said the words, “We’re home”. Why wasn’t this applicable to the US section of the Swiss embassy in Iran? I would appreciate, if someone knows the answer to this situation.

    • @Vesnicie
      @Vesnicie 4 роки тому +13

      The Swiss Embassy has an American section because there is no American embassy. This is done in several cases, where one country will step in to some extent for the citizens of another, which does not have formal diplomatic ties. You could say that while they are in this embassy, they are in Switzerland, but since there are not Swiss, they cannot claim the rights of a Swiss citizen. I don't know the whole story or whether there wasn't more that the embassy might have done for them, but ultimately it wasn't technically their responsibility.

    I watched this movie back in Iran around 21 years ago when the real father was there inside Cinema watching this movie with students in the university and telling them the lies and errors that are in each scene. From what I can still remember he was kind and longing to see his daughter again. Well, that's Hollywood job to direct people's minds and perceptions to what they want. We saw this trend before in movies like 300 or Argo in which they wrote history and politics again.
