    Fascinating and what a tremendous effort on the part of the Calder Civic Trust and indeed, Mr Fletcher himself. He virtually saved the town and made it what it is today. A brilliant piece of local history. Thank you so much for posting.

      Note that the Civic Trust, led by David Fletcher, stopped housing being built on Garden Street. Note also that in the early 2000's a private consortium proposed building a new housing development on Garden Street, and that one of the members of that consortium was the same David Fletcher !
      "If tha ever does owt for nowt, do it for thyself !" is an old Yorkshire saying he took to heart. 😉
