      Ah but the trick here is that Barbosa currently isn't officially a pirate, but a privateer for England with an English military crew. Had he been still a pirate right at that moment he would have gone with it, while giving his own first officer a few instructions on perhaps making things a bit more on his side should the fight not go his way.

    • @becca2938
      @becca2938 11 місяців тому +15

      @@justicedunham4088I don't know who told you this. I don't want to ruin the idealism, but I love history and the reality is that pirates were extremely violent. They would do just about anything to get what they wanted. The pirate age produced some of the most gruesoms practices, that even to this day are considered the most horrifying. And they wanted it to, they never wanted for peaceful pillaging, they absolutely wanted bloodshed and rape and thievery.
      Just an example from an article I found, "[pirates] were known to place lit matches inside a victim's eyelids and slice off a man's lips..." Pirates were respectful and followed a code among their crew, but buccaneers from other crews and anyone so much as considered as the enemy were major targets. Prisoners and stowaways were forced to work on ship. If they didn't abide they'd be thrown overboard, sometimes from the head of the ship, which would leave them crushed under the wood or dragged along the side and drowned. I know that some history books discuss that piracy was in some ways an option of rebellion against the reigning royalty in those regions, but it was also the only alternative for escaped prisoners or tortured souls that weren't able to harbor a productive life on land. Piracy offered them a job, basic necessities, and a chance at riches, no matter how grueling.

      @@becca2938 Many pirates were cruel rotten bastards, but those pirates tend to be the ones who died early. The ones who offered some sort of mercy, out of sheer practicality mind you not morals, tend to be the more successful ones. Both because they lost less money on repairing their ship, more cannonshot, hiring new crew, etc and also because pirates who let people go if they surrendered had the navy come down on them much less harshly. Because a pirate who only disrupted trade a little was a smaller problem than a butcher who was actively strangling trade.
      Unironically piracy in the Golden Age of Pirates was one of the few times where a bit of mercy was the most practical solution. It got you more money with less of a fight, and you could rob people a second time as they aren't dead and can take to the seas again with more cargo to steal.

      It makes sense. Jack hates pointless killing and cruelty, despite his selfishness. For all he loves being a pirate and being a captain... he hates the part that is arguably the most important qualifier of being a pirate; attacking and killing people to steal their stuff. And it's why he has such a hard time keeping a loyal crew; his schemes and adventures don't earn enough coin, because he's just off on adventures or chasing excitement instead of looting and plundering, so there's not enough money to keep the crew happy.

    • @KaguroDraven
      @KaguroDraven 11 місяців тому +46

      @@Blazieth Surprisingly enough, killing people wasn't a huge part of piracy in the "golden age of piracy.". Not out of any moral reason though, pure practicality.
      If people know you let those who surrender live, they are more likely to surrender than fight you. Which means less loot lost repairing the ship, buying more cannon shot, and hiring replacement crew.
      Also people who live are more likely to sail with loot again, and you can rob them again in the future.

      No, most of the countries involved had been building arsenals for a decade or so beforehand, the were also lots of cultural and political differences between and within many of the countries, historic land claims etc. And the Kings of England qnd Germany like playing "wargames" with eachother. The assassination meant they got to put their arsenal to use, meaning it wasn't a waste of time, resources and money whilst having the biggest wargame in history, to that point.

    Jack usually makes a lot of good points.
    But just like real life politics. Well, modern politics anyway. The leaders aren't even present, they're just barking orders from miles away behind a desk.
    Imagine if most conflicts never happen because the people and armies said "Do it yourself!"

    • @Tahkaullus01
      @Tahkaullus01 11 місяців тому

      Except one minor difference: the leaders in this situation _are_ here. Blackboard and Barbossa. So your comparison doesn't quite work.

    • @mnArqal93
      @mnArqal93 11 місяців тому

      @@Tahkaullus01 I thought that was the point of why Jack said that. Why don't WE let them fight it out instead of all of us doing it too. After all it's the captains that were in disagreement with one another. At the time of my comment, other people had said the same thing.
      I wasn't getting too political, I was just making an observation. I wasn't looking for a heavy political debate. The comparison was the just characters are giving orders and fighting while in real life those don't do the same.
      Politics on Twitter lol yeah, no thanks.

    • @mnArqal93
      @mnArqal93 5 місяців тому

      @@eren34558 I agree. Strip the idiots of their leadership/role (if leaders, or just those picking fights) and if it's two (or more) throw them at each other and let them deal with it themselves. Everyone else can then go and live their lives unaffected.
      Same applies to any other political conflict, remove the one(s) causing problems. We don't need to start political debates. Plus, most will at some point move on to the event and forget about this one. Most only care while it's newsworthy.
