Kool. I remember Christmas day 1959 opening the noisy big box, and staring at that box art, and not really having any idea what it was. What it was, as it turned out, was my favorite toy for a long time. I did pretty good keeping things together, until, moving outdoors in summer to play in the real dirt. By Christmas 1960, I had nothing left, except the memory of many hours of fun. Nice jog of a 72 year old memory. (VietNam 1972)
I worked there in the late 60s and early 70s. Loaded a lot of these sets into trucks and boxcars for shipping. I was 10 in 1961 and got the Civil War set for Christmas. My favorite.
GOOD VIDEO SIR,MY BROTHERS AND I HAD ALL THE MARX SETS AS KIDS IN THE 50S AND EARLY 60S.MARX WAS THE BEST BACK THEN,GLAD THE FIGURES ARE COMING BACK IN PRODUCTION BY TIMEE AND BMC .TAKE CARE
Such gems, including all the models I made, were given when we moved to some kid who used to come over often--I'd like to go to Florida now, break into his house, and correct the mistake I made of giving him "Battleground!"
These earlier terrain pieces look so cool with their contrasting color swirls! Love the look of them here and the grey/black swirl from a different variation of this set. If they were more common and easier to find these days, I’d totally incorporate them into my own large custom-built Battleground Europe set I’m making. I like the more common brown/green, but these look too cool!
Great info! Love those early Marx BGs. I also like seeing the orig price tag or mailing label for the additional info (but hate those blasted moving company stickers that seem prevalent on boxes). But anything that ties the set to the original kid rules in my book, because it always seems to evoke fond memories of my own childhood playset. Well done Sir! Keep 'em coming.
Mystery solved! Even as a kid, I knew the post-Korean War tank, and M14 rifles were wrong in my D-Day, North Africa, and Iwo Jima sets. Now I understand; they were originally the modern army, and Marx never changed anything - they just re-named the sets.
I love learning more about these Marx Battleground sets! Thanks for giving this one a commentary, definitely helps to educate me! You wouldn’t happen to have a Battleground European Theater set to review, would you? I’m assembling a massive one for myself, though only the American and German stuff are vintage originals, rest of the accessories and allies are recasts. Would love to see an original!
@@greatesttoysevermade3693 I didn’t see this until just now. Awesome! Not enough footage of this play set on YT, so I’m glad there’s something I haven’t seen yet! My own personal set is nearly complete to my liking, though I have recasted European Allies. I don’t have the budget nor desire to go after the originals lol, they’re out of my reach. But it is nice having double the amount that came in the original set, and in more earthy colors (grey Brits, dark tan French, olive green Russians). All of my Americans and Germans are original Marx, and I’ve amassed 100+ of each faction. Your videos continue to teach me more about the variants.
@@trippsallee I’m glad you enjoy the videos. You should post a video of your BG Europe layout once it’s complete, it sounds great. I know the original set and pieces are pretty expensive! Thanks for watching!
I'm thinking the box I had was different but the "door and bricks" look familiar, I probably threw away the box or they made a new one later; I always had the radio on in our playroom downstairs which played the same, stupid shit that played for decades--Foreigner, Foghat and Loverboy were also, therefore, part of this set and crucial to the war--"Turn Me Loose" and "Cold As Ice" were the background music as CO's gave pep talks to their troops. The problem with being downstairs, though, is you had to turn the lights off when you left--you were also often alone--lights off darkened everything, the lights were also way in the back--as soon as you hit the switch you had to run for your life up the stairs before some monster reached you from under the staircase--monsters are especially fond of the legs and there is nothing you can do if they got ahold of one of them. I'd be up those stairs in a heartbeat--I was probably upstairs before the lights were out. One time we had friends over during the day--but for years I never fathomed a certain event that I still find hard to believe actually happened, but it did because I was there. We had a wooden staircase that went downstairs--monsters, though, wouldn't be under there during the day--they only worked the night shift. At any rate, this kid--who I barely remember now but remembered fully at the time--our house was popular, nearly everyone came over--he threw himself down the stairs face first like it was nothing right away (with his arms tucked under his chest, or so I recall, kind of peek-a-boo style but lower). He caught air on the way down too, as we watched, he threw himself down the stairs like he was jumping in a swimming pool--but for years I was too dumb to have ever considered why he was so eager to do it.
Hello there... great video...I have this set 4752 from my uncle and I'm trying to complete it..and this video was a huge help...thank you. .quick question please...is this a complete set your showing..??
Hi there! Glad that you liked the video. Yes the set shown is complete, I might be missing a couple of shells for the 155. Not sure what you’re missing from your set, but if you’re interested in original issue pieces, beware because there are many reissues out there, especially the Marines as they are currently being produced by a company called BMC. Glad this helped you out! Thanks for watching!
@@greatesttoysevermade3693 Ok thank you soooO much..:)..Very kind of you to reply back..Im 80% complete in the whole set...just need a couple more of the GOLD men and a couple of the lighter tan...need the tree, i have the tree stumps...need 2 more SOFT tents , I have only 1 and i have the big tent.....hey quick question..Do you know what came first..the SOFT tents or the hard plastic tents..?? I have both kinds mixed in..I know the soft ones went with the set you showed us all..:)...
@@toddbelanger1923 The hard plastic od. Green pup tents came in the earlier Training Center playsets. As far as I know, the larger command tent came only in softer plastic EXCEPT for the Marx Boys Camp set in which case it was the harder plastic.
Glad you like the video and thanks for your comment. I personally don’t have a complete BG Europe set myself right now, very nice set. There is a great Battleground Europe video currently on UA-cam from Tom Zorro, check that one out. ua-cam.com/video/6Jn6FYQTfHw/v-deo.html
Oh yes, I’ve seen! My goal in building my own is to have as many or more pieces than that set, as that display brings out the kid in me! I grew up in the 2000s, but always wanted a WWII-era army men play set like that. So far so good in my hunt to obtaining it all!
There was another one often advertised in comic books; I think it was 100 Army men for .99 cents. I wanted that one but the folks decided there would be no army under my command--I think Vladimir Putin had the same experience so decided he would one day have an army no matter what it took and someone would pay for all the years he was deprived--and as far as I can see, his army is also worth around .99.
Sadly I was not alive during this time period I am fortunate to have TimMee and BMC Reissues and some Marx re issues, but this will be something I will hope to get one day even though it is over $200

The tree was for the bazooka dude--it had perfect cover and concealment--they would never know he was up there.
There is an old WWII film called battleground and a short film based on a Steve King novel too. Nice set by the way 👌
Because the military really enforces political views and policy, whoever got one side to fight the other profited from plastics.

I was 9 yrs old in 1958, and I got this set under my Christmas tree. It was the best. That exact set. Bitchen.
I would scream "Don't go over the top! You're all just pawns in the game!"
Incredible box art!
The rockets were donated by the producers of "Godzilla."

I ran into some barbed wire on Lejeune--it was old and out in the field somewhere so I didn't see it--but it works.
I entertained myself for hours with plastic soldiers , and I had them from trom the Napoleonic wars , Civil Wars , to WW2 , my side won every battle .
I'm thinking you had a Napoleonic complex so always had Napoleon beat everyone else.
thanks
