- Defensive highlights of the cross-armed guard originally created by Archie Moore.
Ken Norton - Was an American professional boxer. He was the WBC world heavyweight champion from 1977 to 1978 and is best known for his trilogy with Muhammad Ali, in which he defeated Ali in their first bout by split decision over twelve rounds in March 1973.
Archie Moore - Was an American professional boxer and the longest reigning Light Heavyweight World Champion of all time (December 1952 - May 1962). He had one of the longest professional careers in the history of the sport. Nicknamed "The Mongoose", and then "The Old Mongoose" in the latter half of his career, Moore holds the record for the most career knockouts (131) in boxing history.
Gene Fullmer - Was an American middleweight boxer and world champion. Fullmer began his professional career in 1951 and won his first 29 fights, 19 by knockout. His manager during many years of his career was his mentor, Marv Jenson, who encouraged many youth in West Jordan, Utah, to enter boxing as amateurs.
George Foreman - Is an American former professional boxer. In his boxing career he was a two-time world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist. Outside the sport he went on to become an ordained minister, author and entrepreneur.

This is why I love foreman. He loved using those old, forgotten early boxing techniques
The One both careers he did
In his time these techniques weren’t forgotten at all
it wasnt forgotten its just not often used, a cross armed gaurd is defensively effective but it takes away your ability to counter.
@@mastersta5267 yep,but moore really good at it
Mainly after his comeback with Archie moore
The cross guard is super underrated and super effective when used correctly. I want to do this.
Joe Frazier does this too, when he bobs and weave and ducks and comes up with a left hook to counter.
It is also compatible with the Philly Shell guard, as the hand positions overlap in similar postures.
I used to try to philly shell because I was a big Roy Jones and James Toney fan and use that slickster style then I realized I was fat and white. but I think someone who is more robust and shorter like myself can use the cross armed, mummy type defense with elements of the shell and the wing chun wing block (high elbow guard) it can be pretty effective. Look at David Tua.
Problem with cross armed defense in my opinion is that it limits the punches you can throw back so you’ll get bullied for not posing threat if you use it for extended amount of time
So yeah you should definitely combine it with other types of defense like how foreman does it with long guard and high guard
Even Evander Holyfield
Mad respect. The elegance. The functionality. Simplicity but yet so effective can be used in a bar room brawl. It’s deep.
Archie Moore did not invent the cross guard but he sure made it famous. There are drawings and photographs of it from way before Moore's day and he said he learned it from a Trainer Hiawatha Grey. Dempsey even used it a few times against Sharkey. Daniel Mendoza explains it and says it's "the most scientific" and his favorite defense in his book from the 1700's. I imagine it predates him as well.
Great work on this video brother.
Ive used the cross armed defense since i was a kid, most people see it and dont understand what im doing, but i can honestly say uts never failed me in a boxing match
Do you have a tutorial for this tecnique?
@@ivanmarconetti4029 Use your eyes man, if you punch the opposite arm covers the face and vice versa, be fluis
*fluid
@@ivanmarconetti4029 watch floyd.
@@MaestroMMA Floyd is using a philly shell not a cross guard
Ken Norton has the best Cross-Armed defense in history
This guarding technique is simply the ultimate defense if used correctly
Tim Witherspoon had a nice cross arm defence
Great defense highlight. Cross arm is pretty much an extinct style nowadays
Derrick Chisora does it sometimes. Problem is it leaves your body exposed
cotto used it against canelo
+Buddy Boy12 yeah it's good at protecting against straight punches but leaves you open to uppercuts and body punches
+KillaBlu not if u crouch and slip ...i find im open to left hooks tho when I use it but it's a good guard to use
+Marco Cano what works for you man, I haven't seen many boxers use it really, the only ones I've seen use it not in this video are Cotto and Fraizer and even they rarely use it.
i love cross-armed, I do not understand how it is not the most used style. Logically I think it's the best defense
Boxers nowadays neglect their history
These rare videos show the defensive strengths of the Cross Armed guard, and reveal that is is so practical and effective even against the best fighters in history. When combined with rolling and parrying, I find it to be a smarter stronger style. But, the real advantages are MUCH more obvious when you learn how to use this style WITHOUT GLOVES for MMA and self defense. I suspect the technique's real origin is bare knuckle and close range fighting. Once you take off the gloves, you can't hide behind your fists like modern fighters do. Large padded gloves work great in the ring, but for MMA and self defense, standard guards leave too many gaps. Long live the Cross Armed Guard, or as it used to be known, The Safety Block.
Mark Tennenhouse
It actually is an old school, pugilistic boxing style. Most boxers that used it were trained by old schooler's...who adapted it for 'sports' boxing.
I believe, with the advent of bareknuckle boxing, the inadequacies of boxing, especially with gloves, will be exposed and a resurgence of the old school styles will be seen.
The standard guard works in bare knuckle and mma. You just have to use your forearms to do the blocking instead of your hands to replicate the size and cushioning of your gloves. downside is that leaves your ribs exposed to body shots.
Anderson Dilva vs Isreal Adesanya. Silva used the bee swatting crosses arm my thai range finding technique you ste trying to find it. It is with Silva. Only man in UFC to utilize all those guess Mcgregor called it bee swatting technique beautiful.
@@bodarkman1 Yoel Romero used it as well... And brian ortega goes into it for brief moments...
Ramin Guy Sweet I'll see if I can find some of that somewhere! Thank u brotha
I see this often compared to the philly shell and I can see why. This defense is really practical if you know how to block. You can hold your hands diagonally or horizontal. You can basically block all hits to the head when you use it horizontally, only leaving the body open. If you use it diagonally, you can block most punches to the head and body leaving only one side of your head open and the opposite side of your body open, but if you train your reflexes well enough to raise your elbow to block that side of your face and lower your other elbow to block that side of the body, you may be able to develop an incredible defense similar to the slipping one can do in the philly shell.
Awesome video my man!
Love the cross arm defence
This guard works beautifully in Muay Thai. The accessibility to elbows, the frames for setting up hard strikes. It’s such a profound guard.
I think it's especially useful in a bareknuckle fight. Imagine a bare knuckle coming your way and you block it with your elbow/forearm. The hand would break first. Granting you a victory without landing a punch
yes, Peak a boo and Cross arm defense are both extremely useful techniques in a street fight.
Exactly , with cross arm also every guy can win a bare knuckle athlet
Great video! Archie Moore is my favorite; very intelligent, great defense and great knockout power. And notice how much longevity and good health some of these fighters had, using this great defensive style; George and Archie had the two longest successful boxing careers in history, before Bernard Hopkins. George Forman doesn't even seem like he's boxed before, and Archie Moore was very articulate, and a dynamic orator and speaker well into his 70s and 80s. Boxing is a science, violent, but a violent science none the less; learn to fight, and you'll save your brain and be able to enjoy this wonderful sport for a long time. Thank you for this video!
Bro,..z nobody is even in the same galaxy as you when it comes to these boxing vids,..thank you for taking the time to make such excellent work ..I enjoy them all thoroughly
Glad you enjoy the content bud.
love the jazz mix as well
this is the best video you have made by FAR, congrats man
Awesome as always
This song is incredible thanks
Taking some more highlight requests if people have any. Will be working on videos of Larry Holmes and Danny Romero fairly soon.
who is your favorite boxer ?
johan bell Of all time? Sonny Liston.
+haNZAgod such an underrated boxer , that powerful jab , he was a boxer to be reckoned with , it's sad that he was never given his proper due
Do you think there's enough footage for a Tommy Burns?
Shadowsnake 89 Unfortunately there probably isn't otherwise I would have made a Burns highlight by now, definitely an underrated fighter.
Awsome thanks, Archie Moore best!
Norton used it well, even able to counter pretty quickly off it
Sick video, much enjoyed
The music in these videos is really good.
love defense highlights
Thank appreciate it!
Norton and foreman cross armed skill was very amazing over the decades
Big George only really developed his after his comeback. He didn't really need it before, he just walked through most opponents, until Ali.
The top arm does the shielding, the bottom arm does the hitting- in order to make this workable you’re gonna need to develop a hook. Of the upmost importance weight on the back leg and pull the left shoulder back.
Great concept to cover for a video. Was very effective. I don't believe it is really used at all today. More shoulder roll used for the fighters nowadays ...
Chuck Finley It peeked my curiosity since Cotto's last fight using this technique.
I got the shoulder roll down decently but I really want to learn the cross guard, it just has an old school vintage look to it that looks bad ass
Awesome video!
👊😎
tres interressante cette video merci a toi
Very nice.
Fullmer seemed to use an inverted version of the cross guard, interesting
Beautiful. Every fighter/person should watch this. Arms already up, counters easy & devastating. 🥩
as a boxer that has a ambidextrous style it helps to be able to switch from standard, philly, cross and other variations like the mumy/thai stance.
Sean Strickland uses it in MMA off his shell. So slick and underutilized
Respect for this video your content is fire.. I have to ask where did you get this beat!
Just so beautiful ❤️
Can you do more defensive highlights specifically on blocking punches with the elbows
I have always wondered if this was an actual defensive guard or just in the Fight Night games. I have rarely seen it in action.
David Tua was also a fighter who used the crossed arm guard it’s Funny cause people always say Tua and Tyson had a similar style but if you really look at Tua style you see they are not the same at all, Tua has the off center line old school cross guard stance
This and The X cross guard with the left hand over right temple and the right over left temple while using the elbows to block liver, kidney, solar plexus, and the rare throat shot. But that last one helps by keeping the chin tucked as tight as possible anyways. But my base has always been Peekaboo, Dutch/ Highguard, and Philly shell to give some lower defense.. Can take gut shots all day but I can't withstand more then two liver punches in a short duration.
Joe frazier should be on this
Rajni Kanth smoking Joe people don't give him a lot of credit people say Tyson would ko him in 1 round. People should watch all of his fights. Joe was hard to hit and get better in the later rounds, and when he got knocked down he got up .
Theres alot more to this guard than meets the eye, I don't like using a high guard so I'm trying to subsitute it for this
when I competed I combined the high guard and cross-arm with some slickness man I swear I barely ever got hit. I use to spend hours of sparring just working on defense and angles. But I lost a lot of fights too being too defensive.
The best defense imo
Big big fan of your work. May I suggest another video on the cross guard? There's not much content available on this defense.
Do you have any fighter in particular that you'd like me to highlight? So far I've done Ken Norton, Gene Fullmer, George Foreman and Archie Moore's cross-armed defense.
@@hanzagod Thanks for the answer. I'd like to see Frazier's guard, then maybe Witherspoon and Holyfield. Also in the comments people suggested other names like Berbick. But I'd love to see more of this defense from the boxers you cited.
@@hanzagodPLEASE do a video on Fullmers overhand right/right cross. I’m obsessed with trying to learn it. Especially the one he would bring down on top of his opponents heads… thanks,
difficult to pull off well but can be very effective that cross guard
Yess I like the way Norton used it. If you combined that with head movement like Toney. And a high guard like Winky Wright for backup.
You got some hard solid layers of defense
This is very effective with 4oz MMA gloves, Dustin Poirer uses it very effectively.
Could you do a fight highlight on smoking Bert cooper’s high guard?
If there's a part 2 it must have Trevor Berbick!!!
Chisora should been included just because he does the cross armed defence lol not because hes a all time great....nice video btw bless
Excelent video. There are boxer of light weight who use these style of defense?
Luis Alfredo Rodríguez Valero I honestly hope so
Old School
now i know lol i use this never knew. thanks
Who’s boxer using this defense in today’s boxing style
well i learned something today
Foremen 2 was amazing
are there any cons in using the cross-armed defend?
awesome stuff. for the life of me I can't understand how it works...but these guys are great
I would count the Philly Shell as most similar to this, as it goes. Philly shell seems based on this and then tweaked like right hand positioned at the side of the head, and more side on stance. But basically I find them very similar.
This one seems more similar to a high guard approach, based on trying to use it to advance forward on the opponent, pressure fight, and cut the ring off. The Philly Shell seems to employ different tactics based around a different mindset.
Mind you, I say Philly Shell, I'm a bit old fashioned. To me the Philly Shell is just a cross arm block basically but just a slight variation of it. The more side-on stance enables counter punching better, I would have thought. But it's not as easy to launch an offense from.
Best shell user ever was actually in a way, James Toney in his prime, to me anyway. . Absolutely old school. Mayweather would be a close second IMHO. Not meaning to take anything away from Mayweather, of course.
Best cross armed block-ist was Norton, for my tastes.
Interesting
I know this video already includes him, but what about a defensive highlight video solely for Moore?
I just made a new video of him only about 2 weeks ago so not re-watching his fights for a while.
People say it doesn’t exist nowadays but that’s just not true. It’s evolved into the philly shell that I’d say most prospects outside the heavyweights use. That stance with the lead hand firmly under the rear is very modern boxing.
Name of music?
Great vid Hanza, but God damn I wish you had thrown in some Holyfield in there as well.
Mixed with the Detroit shoulder roll it's almost impossible to get knocked out using this defense .. ..ASK JAMES TONEY!.....plz do Rubin Carter!
Take notes from archie and ken norton they did it the best
Dustin porier uses this well, especially in his second fight against max
He doesn’t cross his arms , he just uses an elbow block
Cross block is not used much anymore.so many greats used it
Just finished watching MANDINGO.
Creed III brought me here, Dame uses this in the movie. Looks more cool than vertical guarding
Reminds me of 52 blocks
Evander Holyfield also used it sometimes a lil fresher footage availablr for that
True
Music?
Instrumental ???
I’m an amateur heavyweight and I use it because I’m short 🖐
never new such a block existed. don't see any current boxers using cross armed blocks
Cletus Seldin aka the "Hebrew Hammer" beat Roberto Ortiz bloody late last year while using this guard. He's the reason I looked into it. Seldin is a crude slugger though so he lost his most recent match by decision to Yvess Ulysse who is a pure boxer and didn't allow Seldin to touch him.
Y’all really forgot about Frazier with the guard
Archie mixed his cross arm defence with a lot of bobbing and weaving setting himself up for counters.
Loving that instrumental! What is it??
+TVsez Mononome - Every End Is A New Beginning
Evander Holyfield was also big on the Cross Armed Style
Can anyone recommend a match between 2 boxers who are both using that guard ?
Rocky vs Moore. While Rocky didn't have the most solid cross guard, he did use it a fair bit when trading hits.
@@granddya5323 I'll look it up.
@@daniel-zh9nj6yn6y Enjoy it man. It's a good fight despite a losing effort after round 1.
The last one
Cross guard works better in the heavier weights, it would not be of much if any use in light weight division
Would this style of defense be practical for lower weight classes?
Of course. I am becoming a boxer at 15 and I am using this style mixed with a kinda marciano/bent down style and I am only 123 and 5'7 at 15.
I have the same question.
***** Yeah but most kids in amature are by the books boxers and throw straight punches or are agressive because they wanna be like tyson or wilder. Thats just my experience though not but one boxer played the technician and forced me to change up into stonewall and high guard.
you should make a video of that.
Luis Alfredo Rodríguez Valero ?
Ahh. The crab defense. Not the most effective technique but a few fighters somewhat mastered it. Most notably Archie Moore and George Foreman during his comeback years.
Southern Storm frazier had the best version of it in my opinion
Once blocked a left hook with this during sparring luckily the guy had thick gloves like 16-18 ounce or else his would’ve break
👍
David Tua, Bert Cooper also
I'm going to start training this stance. Hope me luck! Could anyone tell me how to guard the body tho?
@Goochi Goober hmmm thanks. I can see how that works!
Look up precision strikings video on the cross guard he show how to use it properly
How's it going?
@@lusianojwkwknan6640 haha in the end, I didn't have the guts to continue to take punches. The cross guard is a very hard style to master and I did try it for a bit but its more of a technique for a specific person. For example joe frazier and etc. A person who is willing to stand there and bang punches. But It did help me to discover that im a forward pressure fighter.
Position the lead hand on the body, like Philly Shell, swipe at punches to the body to misdirect them or simply absorb them with glove/forearm. Alternatively crouch to reduce the surface area of your body, rasing the lead arm horizontally to further reinforce protection from the rear arm.
No frazer?
Foreman part 1 = saddler esque with ring cutting and ko, Foreman Part 2 = archie moore influence
Nah,he didnt use roll and much bob an weave
Joe Frazier could have been on this too
l use a cross guard when jabbing, only when fighting southpaws though so l can block his jab and still throw one myself
whats the music
I made this nearly a year ago, I don't remember.
