Considering the process involved in making Scagliola and the forms that can be made which are not really possible in stone calling it a falsehood is a misrepresentation of what goes on. All the same this is an absolutely stellar bit of work and I appreciate it immensely.

Great video ! The labour costs in those days were extremely low ; so thàt helped too. The faux marble technique is very fascinating.
When seeing the library I suddenly got cravings for wedding cake for some reason.

As a very long time decorative painter (I particularly love faux marble and faux bois), I find this absolutely fascinating and exquisite. Such artistry(!), in Europe, during the Baroque and Rococo periods...beyond amazing!

Good eye! For the live action remake of the Beauty and the Beast they actually recreated rococo interiors of Bavarian palaces. Belle's bedroom for example is modeled after the "Hall of Mirrors in Nymphenburg Palace". Type it into Google and you'll recognize it. :)

It's interesting to me how, during my year of architecture study in Europe, we never looked at Rococo buildings or interiors. My thought: rococo is excessively ornate, to the point of lacking a strong unified visual structure. The florid lines of rococo decoration are like cake frosting, an add-on that is usually too saccharine to be taken seriously. In contrast with the disciplined formal languages of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.

It's interesting how necessity is the mother of invention, by that I mean marble is so expensive, and a alternative was created that is so like real marble, quiet amazing, so good infact you wouldn't know the difference unless you knew, or had to carrythe weight of it, genius.

Translation error: Leim does not mean Lime. Leim means glue in English - specifically in this case bone glue made from animal bones, which is a very old fashioned kind of glue that they would have used in back then. Not sure if there will be more errors, but fuck me. How did they miss that? I'm drunk and I noticed!

    • @squeakhawk01

Thank you for the clarification. This makes a lot more sense. I knew that traditional scagliola (this faux marble plaster) uses "scotch glue" or animal glue, so I was wondering if this video had it right. They also added things like small marble chips into the mix to give it more marble like qualities sometimes, but yeah, the plaster, hide glue (mixed with water as I understand), and the pigment are the primary ingredients.

@@joseffinat966 Animal glues don't use solvents. You use heat and water to soften them and then as they cool and dry they harden. When mixed with plaster in these small amounts it really wouldn't be that sticky on your hands.
