  • Although it might seem that the Kettering system with its’ fiddly points adjustment using feeler gauges has gone the way of the Dodo, it is an important skill to learn, together with the dwell angle adjustment using a multimeter can help you not only to master another ability, but it also helps to understand the basics of the modern electronic ignition system. The basics have not changed.

    Best video I could find on the subject. I've had old cars for years but I've finally got one that I'm not bothering to upgrade to electronic ignition, so I actually needed to brush up on it, haha! Thank you.

      You are welcome! It's been quite a few years since I've had to adjust a set of points, but felt to get a proper understanding of the ignition system, you have to start at the beginning. Hang on to your hat - I'm bringing in current ignition systems, including testing of 2, 3 & 4 wire ignition coils and modules as well as diagnosis of those systems in future videos!

    I knew that you could adjust the distributor head to adjust for timing degree, but I never knew about this - I knew you could adjust points with a feeler gauge but not the full process behind this. Very good to know!

      @@MiracleMAX I know this video was done with a modern dwell/tach, but I got an analog one and I figured it wouldn't make much difference. All my other settings seemed to work, but when I used the dwell setting, my meter maxed out and had no difference in reading while cranking or not. I had the red and black leads to each side of my battery, my green on the negative side of the coil, and I had the distributor center cap wire grounded to engine. Not sure why that happens. I'm hoping my meter isn't burnt out.

      @@eurekasevenwave2297 Hey Eureka SevenWAVE,
      Not sure what make of meter you have, but have you searched for a manual? It sounds like you have it connected correctly. Usually if there is a green wire, that one does go to the negative side of the coil. Double check all your connections and also check the settings on the meter itself. There should be a cylinder number switch to match your meter. Try without shorting the coil wire out - this may have an effect. Did you try with the engine running?

      Thanks Stewart, I have one further video staring the Mighty Red Motor dealing with setting ignition timing. It's hard to demonstrate these practical tasks with modern vehicles since most of these adjustments are ECU controlled. I thought it was important to start with the basics before moving onto the complex systems we deal with today.

      @@MiracleMAX Okay, I see it now, it was on screen text. Cheers.
      Question for you. I tightened the screw but when I took the feeler gauge out it sprung closed. I had the main body of the points pushed forward as far as I could and the swing-arm lump on the lobe. Any idea what I'm doing wrong ... or could it be a stuck & slippy vac advance mechanism under the points? Cheers again.

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  2 роки тому

      @@RoverIAC So the feeler gauge needs to be pulled in and out when the screw is tight and the points pad is on the distributor shaft lobe. Yes, when you try to tighten the screw, it does have a tendency to move, but you just have to reposition it back on the lobe and check again.
      The vacuum advance plate shouldn't move too freely. Is the diaphragm OK? Can you put a hose on the outlet, suck on it and the actuator moves and holds in place?
      Also, the mechanical advance under the points plate should have springs that allow it to return to their start position. When the springs fail or get weak, the rotor button will move very freely without resistance and not return to their original position.
      This might help explain a bit better.

      @@MiracleMAX Thanks again Max. I finally got the points set correctly... it still wouldn't start but then I noticed the fuel bulb was half empty. Ain't that always the way. You try to fix something and half way through you run out of fuel or the battery goes flat. I got it started after a jerry can of petrol. But then I ran out of light. Also the bulb in my timing light broke. It had a spare bulb when I bought it in 1992. But I usually do that by ear because I think the balance may have slipped on its rubber ring a bit. Thanks again.

      Great idea Truck This Garage, you can get away with that on some points, but unfortunately with these it is a little more difficult, especially when trying to film as well. I have done that with some points that have a better adjustment hole for ease.

    If you're going to do the timing after the dwell, which you should, mark the distributor position and then turn it to get on the lobe. It's much easier than trying to kick the starter over to get there. After you set the clearance, rotate the distributor back to, or close to, its original location as you will be sharpening up the timing anyway. I'll throw a shrimp on the barbie, mites.

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment Alex. Everyone has a different method. I find it hard to 'bump' using the starter to get the lobe where it belongs. Maybe I just don't have the skills! 😉
      That is very useful if you have removed the distributor. When just replacing the points and setting the timing, the distributor should be in a close enough position to maneuverer the distributor slightly to get your timing where it belongs.
