Upstate New York driving is a piece of cake. Would have been a good place to start as long as it's not winter and you avoid the metro areas like Rochester, Albany, and Syracuse.
When I was in the Army, we were learning to drive the Humvee. There were 3 trainees and an instructor. I learned to drive in the Boston area, known for aggressive drivers. The other 2 guys were from LA and a guy that only drove tractors on the farm. The instructor nearly quit.
I watched other Brits driving in America and they actually love it because they say the cars are much bigger and the roads are so much bigger and easier to maneuver. Many of them say driving in the United States is a pleasure. 😊
My jaw dropped when I recognized the streets you were on. You're brave learning to drive in the USA around LAX. That area is a mess to navigate and congrats for doing so well 🤠
We like to call it the "right" side. It's more polite, because it allows Brits to imagine that it might mean the opposite of left, rather than the opposite of wrong.

Sweet James is a accident lawyer who has advertisement on radio. Lawyers pay radio stations to place their advertisement next to band name and title. Sweet James is the largest firm in Los Angeles. His wife...ex...is on Real Housewives of Orange County.
Not even hearing the Station ID, just from turning the volume down on Weezer.. yup. Shame, I'd have loved to have seen mom's reaction after "the neighbors complain.."
I taught my kids how to drive in a massive empty parking lot to avoid accidents. I had them drive up and down the rows and in and out parking spots. Then they graduated to empty roads, then regular traffic, then highways... They each passed their tests on the first try and I would let them drive in regular traffic when I needed to go somewhere for the first 4 years of their driving to gain experience.
You kids are adorable. Looks like your driving for the first time. To us that's not a big car,it's average. I would like to see how you drive on one of our 8 or 10 lane highways.🤣😂. You guys don't realize your seeing more of the United States than most Americans.👍✌️❤️🙏🙏🇺🇲
Same for me in every country I’ve ever visited. Never noticed or needed a car. The countries I’ve visited had great public transportation & as long as you aren’t dirt broke? It’s very affordable, as an American from the east coast? Imo you NEED a car in America, it’s very big & our public transport leaves a lot to be desired. Other countries public transportation systems aren’t perfect either but the ones I’ve visited were also tiny compared to the US, at the most the size of a few US states, so tiny in comparison. unless your in a major US city, your gonna need a car
When you rent a car, BEFORE you pull out of parking stall, adjust your mirrors, and become failure with the buttons. Having a copilot is good. Use the GPS. To get use to driving big vehicle, you could practice in an empty large parking lot. I was "requested" years ago to take a defensive driving class, and the best thing I learned to drive as if everyone else was out to "get me".
Makes sense. I actually have my GPS set to use the Australian female voice for English... I found it to be the least annoying voice of the several options. The accent is endearing, and I nicknamed it "Matilda". It does occasionally make humorous stumbles on some of the many Spanish street and city names in California though.
I totally feel your pain. I had to drive in Ireland for the first time and it was so hard to remember to drive on the wrong side. I hope you had a good trip.
Growing up in rural America was a blessing. I started out by only steering at 4 while standing in tge seat between my grandad's legs, because I was too short to reach the pedals...including a clutch. By six I could drive an automatic alone. At 8, I was driving the 64 ford, 3 speed on the column alone and I was driving the hay truck because I was too small to throw bales to the top; it was all square bales back then.
In the south, we treat a 4 way stop as first in first out. You know its your turn when all the cars that were stopped when you came to a stop have gone then its your turn to go. If that makes sense. Basically, everyone has to stop for the sign so you go when you were the car whose stopped for the sign the longest.
Word of advice - if you're attending a big sporting event or concert with big parking lots and lots of cars, make sure you back into your parking space. That way when you need to go out, you can just drive forward instead of having to wait for people who are not going to let you in. 👍
And anywhere in North Carolina. If someone hits you while you're backing up it's your fault. Yes, it's stupid. NC has a lot of really stupid traffic laws. You can tell they're all written by geriatric lawyers who don't drive and probably don't know how.
I always do that when possible. Even in my own driveway. Neighbors across the street own several cars parked in the street. Easier to get out without possibilly dinging one.

Where Millie and your mom sit used to be called (during the cowboy TV and movie days) the 'shotgun seat', and the reason was that on the stagecoaches, there was a wide seat above for 2 people to sit--the driver and the "shotgun", whose seat was always to the driver's right. Good job! I love how you talked yourself through each move. I'd be so hesitant to drive on the other side of the road for the first time, in an unfamiliar city, at that.
We will to Grand Cayman and rented Jeeps. They drive on the wrong side of the road there. I almost ran into someone. But they were very kind and waved me though. I was yelling out the window "I'm SORRY"! They waved and yell back we are use to it.😂😂
Except that in a lot of places the right lanes turn into a "Right turn only" lane, and you have to find space to get over if you're continuing straight, but yeah... I prefer to get into the lane I'll need to be in for a turn a block or two before I get there if possible.

Your Mom is the perfect Mom & a great copilot! When I’m driving in Ireland: I always focus on keeping the steering wheel along the center line. Yes, I’ve turned on the wipers instead of signaling for a turn 😂
I lived in San Antonio for 3.5 years. They are very good about letting people in. Pretty much you just have to wave and they'll let you in just about anywhere. 😂
Be careful “waving “ someone in. If an accident happens between that vehicle and another, you can be held partially liable for that, even if the person didn’t have a proper lookout. It’s best to create a space but not wave. Leave it up to the driver to take advantage of the space
That's anywhere really. Even here in LA. Despite the reputation, ppl here will let y in if y ask or will slow and give space. I always thank anyone who lets me in with a wave. Karma.
"so you're the crazy Brit who cut me off....I knew it!" Kidding. Soo funny watching the stress level though. Good driver for someone that drives on the wrong side of the road
As an American and who drives what we think are normal size cars, it's odd to see all the apprehension when he drives. However, if I was to go to the UK, I would experience the same but opposite. Good job James; I'm sure it wasn't fun at first!!
biggest tip remember the driver is towards the center of the road. I have driven in the US and UK and after figuring that out drive was easier and less stressful.

Seal Beach, California here. YOU DID GREAT JAMES! Proud of you! I've been to Britain and understand the nightmare of "the other side of the road" lol Very well done.
A good tip for keeping yourself centered on the road is to think about your right leg (or left leg for UK drivers). Imagine you're not in a car and you're just walking down the middle of the road. As long as you can sense that your right leg is around the middle of the lane, then you know your car is likely also centered in the lane. The second you start looking at your fenders and being near sited conscious is when you loose your sense of boundaries. You'll never be able to see the actual space between your front right bumper and the cars parked along the side because those are impossible blind spots. And of course spaces look relatively bigger and smaller depending on your distance to them. So it's important to put it out of your mind and rather focus on "you" and how you are centered in the space you are trying to get through. If it is obviously tight, then of course you have to slow down and really start to scrutinize your actual sides of your vehicle as you push through a narrow area. But the second you pretend you're just walking down a busy hallway of people, instead of a 3rd person perspective of you looking at yourself in the car and then centering that image, the easier and more relaxed you'll be with keeping centered and not constantly weaving because you're afraid of a large on coming truck being too close or something. (This works too when turning into parking spots. You'll lose sight of the parking lines. But if you aim with your right knee in mind and visually pick a center point of that parking spot, you should be pretty centered when you turn into it. )
It's good that it was only the two of you as you were naturally nervous would be worse had your wife and son been in there. AND JUST HOW RIGHT/PERFECT THAT YOUR MOM GOT TO GO THRU THIS WITH YOU.. ANOTHER FIRST IN THE LIFE OF HER SON ❤❤❤❤

American here, lived in England (Winchester and Southampton) for about 6 months. Drove rentals, sometimes manual transmissions. Did pretty well, no accidents. Got honked at a few times, especially first time trying to go 3/4 around a large multilane roundabout, which I didn't know existed.
You should see how long the "Classic American Cars" were decades ago. The Chrysler 1973 Imperial was about 235 inches long. That's 19.58 feet long. Then we haven't even started on the stuff like consumer RV's yet.
I love that you were not afraid to just jump in and tackle driving in the US! Good job. My husband is from New Zealand and has mastered it here. I hope you enjoyed your visit to the USA.

Thankfully I've never had to drive in LA. Every time I've been there someone else was driving.
You are so brave! I've tried to imagine driving in the UK and just can't wrap my brain around it.
Aww James is nervous 💗. I'm from so Cal and the driving is definitely an art. LA drivers are known to be quite impatient and rude, but not everyone.
American here, lived in England (Winchester and Southampton) for about 6 months. Drove rentals, sometimes manual transmissions. Did pretty well, no accidents. Got honked at a few times, especially first time trying to go 3/4 around a large multilane roundabout, which I didn't know existed.
Yall are great! So much fun to watch 😊
You should see how long the "Classic American Cars" were decades ago. The Chrysler 1973 Imperial was about 235 inches long. That's 19.58 feet long. Then we haven't even started on the stuff like consumer RV's yet.
You are brave! And I say that because I will never forget driving in the UK for the first time. Driving on the other side of the road feels so wrong!
Such a nice family.
I love that you were not afraid to just jump in and tackle driving in the US! Good job. My husband is from New Zealand and has mastered it here. I hope you enjoyed your visit to the USA.
I remember my first time driving in the U.K. At least the car was small!
Yes, worry about roundabouts, very few Americans know how to use them. 🤔
Yeah!!! Great job, James 😃🤙
Been to the UK many times - could never get used to driving on the "wrong side" and never will.
