The Pinnacles is a fantastic day hike. In our next episode we do an overnight hike to some secluded hot hubs in the bush at the Mangatainoka Hot Springs.
Hahaha hi there thank you for showing this came across it by chance typing up my kauri trail gang job I was part of when I was 15 I was the youngest supervisor and a man from England who was the oldest supervisor for our two groups that upgraded this 11k track from the kauaeranga Road end up to the pinnacles and back down the Billy goat track we paved rock breaked blasted with power gels for few years with the help of the local helicopters it was an amazing experience we took part building of the 200 bunk hut thank you.. so much story in that track Hahaha
Wow, what an achievement, especially for a 15 year old! You guys did a great job, the track is excellent now. I walked it before it was upgraded and stayed in the old hut, and it is such an improvement now. Thanks for watching and all your hard work in making an awesome walking track. :-)
You and mike remind me of me and my Bestfriend when we’re on a hike. One is saying random pieces of facts about nature and history and the other is trying to document everything. All while running out of breath. I really enjoyed this video. Excited to do this track
I was puffing just watching, sadly it's a stunning walk I couldn't do these days. Gee it's a flash hut, more like a mansion. Thanks for doing the hard walk for me , Best walk I've seen so far, Enjoyed, Cheers Bevan 🤠❤️🇦🇺
Thanks Bevan, it was hard work for us, but I absolutely loved it. The hut is a definite improvement on the old hut (I stayed in the old hut when we did a school trip up there. Thanks so much for watching :-)
Just watched your video, so entertaining. I did that as a run when I was back in my fit trail running days. Got to the hut in an hour, and went down the billy goat track. Did you guys hike to the Cookson Kauri tree, it's an orginal 700 year old still standing Kauri and it's impressive.
Wow, an hour to get to the hut! That's impressive! We did it in 3 hours and another hour to the top. We've visited the Kauri tree on other trips up there, just not this time. We'll head up there again when the weather is better and do some more exploring. Love it up there.
Heading up that way in a few weeks. The Totara Flat campsite looks a good one. Were there many bugs? The walk looks amazing - hard and long - but worth it.

Great video. Thanks for sharing🤗🤗
Thanks Mary, glad you enjoyed it
I remember it as very very muddy but that was decades ago. Had my honey moon camping there.
It was muddy when I first did this track too! It's a nice track now, much easier walking.
Another inspiring video ! Thanks … that’s on the to do list … but perhaps as an overnight !
An overnighter will be great up there. It's such a nice hut. A lot of people climb up the top to watch the sunrise.

Not too many bugs. A few bitey things on the ankles at the campsite, but bug spray mostly kept them away. It is an amazing walk, enjoy :-)
Can a big campervan (ours 5 berth) drive to Totara campsite? not tight for big vans?
I think it should be ok but to be on the safe side call the DOC office. It’s a 30 km/hr speed limit, so no one should be driving fast.
