  • This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
Fr. Mike guides us through the Catechism’s discussion of same-sex attraction. He highlights that all of the Church’s teachings on sexuality stem from her embrace of God’s intended and revealed purpose for sex. Fr. Mike stresses that this understanding of sexuality is core to our understanding of ourselves and the world in which we live. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 2357-2363.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!

Such a profound lesson - and one that is so necessary in the world today. NO ONE is without sin, and if it wasn't THIS, it would be something else. But, with Jesus, we can be healed. ❤️🙏❤️

I was during the pandemic able to slow way down and review my whole life, and I came across Father Mike's discussion on this topic. I have always loved Christ from childhood, but not having been raised a Catholic I did not have this essential education on reason and logic born from the church and a part of our Western philosophical heritage. Father Mike's lecture on this topic was essential for helping me deal with a lifetime of misunderstanding that led me to follow broken logic of the world and accept current trends of social ideology over the basics of Christ and God and reason. Love is Love but only if it is rooted in the source of true love God, Christ and the Holy Spirit, agape love. I might also add that the Thomas Aquinas (Aquinas 101) videos are extremely helpful in setting aside worldly constructs for a more spiritual view that still has a foundation in reason and logic and the writings of CS Lewis as well. Peace be with you.

Gail, I know very well what you say. From a young age I believed in Christ & His saving work, but through brokenness I didn’t follow Him for many years & sank into the depravity of the world. Thanks be to God He rescued me. I’m still unlearning all that society taught. It’s a long hard road. I depend on the Church every step of the way, but it’s hard, especially since I’m so alone. This community helps & im very grateful.🙏❤️

A long episode indeed. A long-awaited one. As a man who is trying to be a non-practising gay and a practising Catholic, I like how forthrightly yet gently this "episode" was presented. I am challenged from both sides. I have experienced discrimination in church from the "us v them" brigade (which greatly saddened and discouraged me), but also from within my gay friend group, which cannot reconcile that I am gay, but choose to live a Catholic life I have one objective which may seem very naive, and that is to be a gay saint. I just want to get to heaven and meet God and say thank you. I am on the bottom rung of the ladder that Father Mike so eloquently described... but with patience and prayers, I hope to make it up a few more rungs! Thanks Father Mike for mentioning the Eden Invitation. I had never heard about it and am going to check it out.

The mere fact that you are living together before marriage brings about scandal, as you will have learned when the Catechism covered that topic. Others don't know, but those that do will simply say, "Look: hypocritical Catholics doing whatever they want...again." That our broken culture is so numb to something like living together without being married just goes to show what a sad state we find ourselves in: sadly, most people today won't even care.
But by not cohabiting before marriage, you are actually IMPROVING the chances of a succesful union; please, go Google that and you'll be surprised.
If there is some way to stop cohabitating before you get married, I would suggest you take that route. It's not easy, but being Catholic isn't easy, it never was, and as you'll soon find out as a married couple, will continue to present challenges.
For as long as we are here on this earth, it will not be easy for Catholics. In many ways, that's the point: we need help, we need God's grace to keep on the path that Jesus showed us. I will pray for you.

Peace beloved. Thank you for being so honest. In counselling people who seem stuck, it's found that the root cause in most cases are absent Fathers or broken Parenthood, where the person never felt loved by either parent...due to the Parents own brokenness. INNER HEALING - a Letter writing process, of that FIRST root that hurt or scarred us. Once written the letter is BURNT. 1st. Meditate on your life from a baby and allow God to reveal who it is through a tear popping when you at the right person. 2nd Write all your anger to only that person and blame them for everything that happened in your life. Start each sentence with I AM ANGRY because... The HEALING part is where you picture you both healed in God's Presence and that person turns to you saying I AM SORRY, I LOVE YOU, I WAS UNABLE TO COS I TOO WAS BROKEN...I SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE FOR YOU...REPEATING the Words of Love and Sorrow till you believe it. This changes your heart towards the person even if they never change and helps you pray compassionately for them. 3rd part of the same letter is GOD's LOVE for just you...speak all this into your soul to heal you. BURN BURN BURN it
Thereafter Celebrate your FREEDOM and be patient with yourself and allow the growth in baby steps. Ask people to pray for you. Put on The Armour of God cos the 7 Deadly sins will return forcefully. Confess and take accountability wherever you have failed. FORGIVE yourself and everyone. God Bless you. Together we are the Body of Christ, when one hurts the whole Body hurts. Most Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, Save Us and the whole world.

Having struggled with same-sex attraction I can say with a lot of confidence that it all comes down to trauma. Sometimes it's a single moment other times it takes years. It can be subtle or otherwise it can be full on to the point that the person represses the memory till it's "forgotten". It's a horrible thing to feel as I felt like a freak and that I didn't have a place in the Church. I'm doing far better now, but man, I really feel for those struggling with it, it's pretty brutal.
Edit: I can understand that maybe some were raised in loving homes, but the fact is that these things can go all the way back to conception, I've found out this year that wounds can happen from the womb.

What an interesting coincidence that it came out the same day as the news that Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesemann of the Diocese of Speyer issued a letter asking pastors in his diocese to bless same-sex couples. I feel for and pray for the young men and women with same-sex attraction who are growing up in an age when so often the response from church leaders to the question of "what must I do to be saved?" is "who am I to judge?" As someone with same-sex attraction, I am so grateful that I came of age under St. John Paul II, and the light of the "splendor of truth," shed by his faith, clear teaching, and humility. Fr.Mike, you have done an awesome job on this section on chastity. There is one very important thing that you have not touched on and seems to be always be looked over when talking about the chastity and sexuality in the church. We mention clergy, deacons, consecrated virgins, men and women who join orders and take the vow of chastity. We go into detail about chaste marriages and how those who are homosexual are called to chastity. You even mentioned confirmed bachelors. But it seems that few mention those who are single men and women who are practicing Catholics and deeply desire to find a practicing Catholic spouse. They desire to live out that vocation but they have not been blessed with a future spouse. On our circle of young people we know, there are several of these people of varying ages. I pray that our church, clergy and programs being to include them in the ways they talk about sexuality and how their lives can and are fruitful. And even how to deal with their singlehood wholly, purely and frutifully. These people that I know are living full lives. They still desire marriage but it is not happening for them. Help us address this too.

Life is hard yet so beautiful! These topics the last two days have made me really think 🤔 and empathize with struggles we all encounter to various degrees, whether with this form of “brokeness” or some other, these crosses are just hard to carry. Yet, when I think about the cross Christ carried out of love for us to show us how to carry our cross/es, it is by no means comparable. He bore it all on His cross.
And look at that redemption!!! What a gift He is to all of us if we follow His lead in whatever brokeness we experience. I truly believe He draws us close to Him in our crosses/suffering if we let Him. There is real redemption there.

The devil seeks to divide people - you see it in this world in the mindset with different race issues - pitting each other against each another. In "celebrating" the different days pointing out differences seeking to divide further still. Instead of celebrating that the real thing that unites us is that of our souls and ALL of us are made in the IMAGE OF GOD. Prayer always and God's blessings!🙏🙏🙏

“Every human being - regardless of sexual orientation, regardless of past experiences of relationship, regardless of how he may have been treated by family members - is made for love."
All too often, this discussion involves a separation between those speaking/teaching and those being discussed. However, Fr. Schmitz abandons this “us versus them” mentality, focusing entirely on “only us”, who have this same anthropology and this same calling. He seeks to build an understanding that we are united as humans, not separated because of one thing or another. Made for Love is more than just a book on the Church’s teaching on same-sex attractions; it is a book on the human person and the destiny for which we were made.❤❤❤

Thank you, Father Mike for your kind and heartfelt words on this sensative topic. We have a person very close to us who deals with SSA and it's incredibly heartbreaking how hurtful others can be towards this individual and their family members. As you stated from the Catechisim that "the Church says they must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity." Sadly, from my personal experience it sounds good on paper, but I don't feel a lot of people put this into practice. At a recent Mass we attended the priest made an unkind remark in his homily about people with SSA and I actually left a study group because of several individuals making hurtful remarks. We all have struggles and it breaks my heart how deliberatly insensitive and unkind people can be.

We are called to become saints, to be perfected in charity, to grow in holiness. Not only are we called to that, it is now made possible through Jesus Christ. The God who is Love fashioned us in His Image. We are made to love as He loves. In Jesus Christ, we are now also being capacitated - to use a term frequently used by the early father and Bishop Ireneaus of Lyons - made capable - by the grace of His Redemption - of actually loving with God's love. Why pray for souls in Purgatory? When the soul leave the body, the time of merit ceases. It is our doctrine, duty and privilege to pray for them similarly when a friend asks us for prayers. Man oh man! That was so so well put. I've seen some of your talks so heard bits, but don't apologise for the length - it all needed to be said here. This effects us all and we all do have struggles in one thing or another and yeah the ladder - that's what we should do with it all, surrender it all to Jesus! We don't want sins in our life - we want to get to heaven. "Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow". Amen!
    Mt12
44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ When it comes, it finds it empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and live there; and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So will it be also with this evil generation.”

Sexuality is ordered to the good things of conjugal love. For a baptised individual, this is sanctified by the Sacrament of Matrimony united by the conjugal love of man and woman, indissoluble and an openness to the procreation of life. Same Sex attraction or Homosexual acts are a distortion of the actual nature of the sexual act. If these tendencies challenge us, surrender it to Jesus 🙏

I am looking for people to please take a moment and pray with me for Souls in Purgatory. Can you help?
According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory:
    Eternal Father,
I offer You the most precious blood
    of thy Divine Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said
    throughout the world today,
for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory,
    for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the universal Church,
for those in my own home,
    and in my family. Amen.
In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20)

Everything Father shared in this lesson was excellent!! It was handled with extreme grace, and I'm in agreement with all of it.
I can't help but think of how our world has become so Very lost permeated in a way that sinful behavior is glorified, encouraged, and to be tolerated. I could give lots of examples. Just two are that couples living together before marriage, are never to be ashamed of that, and having babies before is alright also. That homosexuality is another that is to be celebrated and has become so normalized that I believe it's led thousands of confused hurting young people in that direction. No one will convince me there's always been a large population that's had that tendency they just hid it.
Talk about one heck of a broken world we are living in. Yes, there's always been sin and brokenness but the past couple generations have gone on the rails. Instead of working on the brokenness is all about tolerating, glorifying, and celebrating it.
Makes me so sad for us all.
I pray for this broken world and those that I love living in it everyday. Just not sure we can ever get the pendulum swung back as far out as it's gone. 😢🙏🤲🙏

I like compassion and kindness despite the firmness of the Church. We must indeed be kind and welcoming to those who feel that way, especially, if they're baptized. Praying for them and having "no judgment" conversations are two ways of helping those who feel like they're confused. Without the possibility of a creation, the act is indeed not in line with God or even nature's purpose. Everything has to have a reason and logic according to even atheistic or scientific thinking. Thus, making pleasure as the only outcome for a union contradicts with the scientific theory of evolution and also with God's plan/advice of "be fruitful and multiply" to humans. Embracing any sort of relationship just because one needs a genuine friend is not good as it may still not fulfill the motive of genuine friendship and might even get one in a complicated life down the road. I hope there are many more discussions on this topic between the religious folks and those who are not religious. Only then, there can be a well informed decision for each person. May God guide us all and help those who need discernment and wisdom. Amen. Thank you, Fr. Mike and Team Ascension! God bless
