I have been happy with my HD6s. I think that, yes, it's possible to get more sound for the money if you're willing to sacrifice a few of the capabilities of this setup, or are willing to go with larger speakers, but I wanted a small set of powered speakers that looked nice, had a DAC, and did Bluetooth. If you're in love with a very sparkly top end, these might sound a little reticent, but I find the sound to be non-fatiguing. I should also indicate that these are not being used with a PC, but rather as a hi-fi rig in a smallish room. I use them with a small sub to get that last few octaves, but they don't strictly need it. They sounded nice and punchy without the addition.
@@JoseCastillo-ol8eh I would look at a number of newer powered speakers. At this point the HD6 is quite an old design (if they haven't done significant updates in the interim). You're really spoiled for choice at this point. I know that most newer powered sets automatically sense when a sub is plugged in.
@@thorwulfx1 but those speakers are still for sale hehehe, I already have them, I didn't throw them out on the street, I have to decide with them, I love them, there is nothing old in sound, there are things that sound good and others bad, no matter the age
MDF is used in speaker building for a very good reason, it's density and it doesnt shrink or expand with moisture conditions. The price of MDF has nothing to do with it being the best choice in speaker building. (within reason)
I totally agree with you review , that's why I bought. Paradigm shift a2. Powered speakers , each speaker had its own (2) amps and you can daisy chain as many speakers as you want and blow audio engine away and come in 5 colors from a Canadian speaker manufacture
I am ready to pull the trigger on the more budget friendly A5+. I was thinking I could couple them with the Chromecast Audio accessory and stream music from my iPhone or iPad. Nonetheless, great video!
I had the first Audioengine A5. I now have a pair of tannoy reveal 502. Go for studio monitors they're much much better. Jbl, Yamaha, Adam, Tannoy all of them sound really good and flat at near field.
+randomfrankp No. Same one. Just sound treated the studio to reduce ambient noise and echo. It's a lot better, and probably as good as the audio has ever been, but I'm still not 100% satisfied. May have to buy a few more things to eliminate echo entirely.
Well,i use actually a pair of old Canton Karat 20 + a fully renovated Sony TA-F570ES as desktop audio. Sounds great for a fraction of the cost of a pair of these.
Yeah, i agree with your conclusion. You compared a mid-market studio monitor (the Event 20/20 is pretty common in that range) with what is essentially a consumer computer speaker. For the price range you quoted, you could be even in better company, say the Mackie HR824 Mk2, a THX certified monitor, which can be had for about $700/ea. (Well, that might be double - was that $700/pair?) I usually recommend that computer sound (non-pro use) go to a competent home stereo speaker, say Acoustic Research or Yamaha, and that pro's stick with pro gear as they will get a much truer version of what their sound is like that can then translate to many different devices. For casual home listening and game, you'll do much better with a great pair of bookshelf speakers and a decent receiver than you will with even the most expensive computer speakers.
But hey lets be honest, isn't it cheaper to just use an vintange AMP with good speakers? Been using that myself. There's lots of difference in sound but be lucky and you'll never want to sell the amp again XD
Are you the only tech guy on UA-cam prefering Slickwraps over Dbrand? lol just saying since I see DBrand mentioned in almost every tech video these days. Great video my friend!!
What I look for in speakers without going into too much detail. Is looks, quality / performance and finally the cost the cheapest or best price for great desktop environment. I love the look of these speakers and the performance isn't bad but the cost wow. I know why you have them connected to the mac pro over priced
These speakers come with a built in DAC so I assume I could connect the to my computer or TV with optical. Did you test them with that? Do you remember how they sounded? If I went and bought the 2020s I would need much more hardware to run them.
I highly recommend a pair of JBL LSR 308s for almost half the price they blow everything I've heard out of the water in terms of quality, including the HD6s or the HS7s. You need a lot more space for them though.
Why do I have to use an external DAC with these when they already are powered speakers with an internal DAC? I thought the benefit of a powered speaker is that I just have to buy the speakers and don't have to spend even more.
Hi thanks for your honesty on these speakers. my listening choice is through bluetooth and I'm looking for a good traditional looking speaker with aptx. my first thought was the Edifier s1000mk2 but my wife hates the modern look any help would be appreciated. BTW I'm from England
I have to ask, did the reviewer give them the proper break in period of 40 hours? When I first got mine the mids were overpowering as well, but let that Kevlar woofer open up and it starts to even out. Also, you forget you are not really comparing a $750 speaker to another $750 speaker. This is because the HD6 has it's amp built in. So really, when you say it is a $500 speaker you could be right. With all other speakers in it's price range you have to purchase a good amp to power them which would raise the price of those speakers as a whole.I've had these for a few weeks now, and the only thing they are lacking is deep bass. This is why I purchased an SVS-SB1000 to go with them!
+justin fox The EVENT 20/20 are bi-amped as well. Still a much better speaker. And yes, that's why I've waited several months to review them. They have probably 150 hrs on them.
you say bluetooth sounds bad. but bluetooth is not sound related is just a digital transmission system, it just transmits digital data loslessly. if the sound is bad it is the dac after the bluetooth receiver that was not good enough so blame the internal dac, not the bluetooth. or am i missing something ? if they share the same internal DAC, the optical line in should have the same bad sound quality.
+amanieux In theory, you're correct, but practically, that isn't the case. Bluetooth bandwidth is still pretty limited and while the theoretical bandwidth of Bluetooth 4.0 is high, just like USB 3.0/3.1, current tech can't reliably push those speeds. So the unit is crippled by inefficient Bluetooth hardware.
I paid $250 for my Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Ultras 15 years ago and haven't considered replacing them once. Every other PC speaker that I've seen released since then is laughably inferior.
+Lynode I'd highly suggest it. The only other option would be to go optical from your computer to the Audioengine; however, it's not an ideal solution.
+dimmddr1 If you choose to go optical out, you're relying on the DAC inside the HD6 which is pretty mediocre-designed primarily for the Bluetooth module. Optical seems like an afterthought.
Ive got some M Audios that blow anything away. And i got them at a thrift store for $20. I also have a set of Alesis Monitor Ones that literally blow anything Audioengine has. just saying.
I find it hard to believe that you can tell the difference between a DAC (not amp) that costs $100 and a DAC that costs $800. Unless the DACs do some processing to the sound, what they output should be mathematically identical as long as the components they use aren't introducing distortion.
+omgimgfut Different chips and different power topologies will have both different noise floors and different levels of precision/quantization-errors due to the clocks built inside the device. While a digital file on one computer to the next can be absolutely, mathematically identical, a DAC converts that data into analog waveforms-which is not 1:1 across hardware-the analog filters, jitter levels, etc. all color and change the way we perceive sound. Higher quality DACs typically have significantly higher quality femto clocks, lower jitter, and therefore present more dynamic range, separation, and depth that cheaper silicon.
Disagree that Bluetooth sounds bad. I would argue that it even sounds better compare plugging 3.5mm jack from smartphone to the speakers since the signal have to go the phone's internal DAC while HD6's DAC is being utilized through Bluetooth route.
I heard these in person. Good sounding speaker but definitely not worth the money. My reference pair of klipsch rb75s blew them out of the water and I picked them up for next to nothing second hand.
I know audiophile stuff is fantastic and all, but I could get an incredible pair of headphones for that price. If I bought these my wallet would be hurting
That is strange, I'm using the cheap Philips AEA2000 Bluetooth adapter with a Yamaha Receiver and B&W S601 S3 Speakers and it sounds great, so I don't understand how can you fail in the Bluetooth department!

I have them and the only thing you are right about is the price, since all Bluetooth equipment is at a loss, but for a 5-inch shelf or table speaker for a PC, they are absolutely fine in every way. I would also like a little more power. You can't compare a 5-inch speaker with an 8-inch one, for God's sake.

+MokerMovies You don't get a DAC, or blutooth, or as much portability.
+Michael Chiovatero Can always connect a vintage amp to a DAC...
How vintage?
Mid-century? Seventies? Eighties? Nineties? Millennium change? Tubes or transistors?
+Michael Chiovatero as long as it has RCA's you're set.
All Audioengine speakers are too soft on the high end. Where are those cymbals? I agree with you. Cheers . . .

Anyone else think Quinn looks hot with that stache? No? Well he does, okay now back to the video.
A5+ as a "budget" desktop speaker? seriously? it's like $500 AUD
he doesnt dare to let them play
these speakers cost $1k in my country =(
hi, i enjoyed the video, i think you could improve by smoking a joint while u talk in depth about things
BAAAALLS
Pretty sure no speakers are ever made from solid wood. The cost would be too much.
$750 ? No. I would never.
You lost me at 750
I for one would never buy speakers if they look awful, no matter how good they sound..
"Bluetooth should be the exception and not the rule"... Are you joking?
For these speakers... yes. Because the Bluetooth receiver and DAC is pretty lousy.
That is strange, I'm using the cheap Philips AEA2000 Bluetooth adapter with a Yamaha Receiver and B&W S601 S3 Speakers and it sounds great, so I don't understand how can you fail in the Bluetooth department!
That is some fugly speakers

AudioEngine products are overpriced. I really dont know who need shitty integrated DAC and useless BT modul.

lol "Punchier treble." *sigh*

I love my A5's. The auto-power off is a real nice feature. I was curious about the quality of the HD6's. Thanks for the info.
Can I connect to these speakers my: TV, CD Player, Turntable all at once? How does it know to switch between the sound sources?
Are the Event2020 speakers powered? If not, the cost of an amplifier should be taken into account when comparing these speakers.

also take into account of the size as well....the 20's seem larger.
