I've been wanting to see this again for years, I was at Donny that day, lumped on Wayward lad and was counting my winnings between the last 2 fences, no certs in racing. I forgave him he's still one of the best horses I've ever seen.
Burnt Oak was a hard horse to watch, when he tore off in the Grand National I was convinced he was going to plough through a fence but he eventually got tired and was pulled up, a few years later he was in the Becher Chase at Aintree doing the same thing tearing off in front this time he went straight through one the big fences, horrible fall for both horse and jockey amazing both got up. I think of him every time I go past the sign for Burnt Oak up London.
...what a great horse Wayward was...
+chatham43 Indeed, and by this point, this horse was not as good as before although the horse did win at Aintree I think later that 1986-87 season. Doncaster is of course the home of the St Leger, Doncaster Cup, both staying flat races and the Racing Post Trophy. Also stages National Hunt races as well.
l've watched this race at my first old address. l remember l was meant to be going to a youth club on Saturday for a play we were doing. but l actually didn't go to the club. cause l wanted to see this race and other races on tv.
If he had waited his turn of foot would have won him the race. Easy in hindsight though. The slow Jump at the last cost him to
Wayward Lad won plenty races at 3 miles and 3 miles 1 furlong but never at 3 miles 2 furlongs.
