lmao the disbelief when suju showed up.
fun fact: shinhwa is a boy group that have been together for almost 22 years so you’ll be surprised at how many of the 2nd gen groups are still together!
edit: also a lot of idols tend to debut when they’re teenagers which is probably why they look so young now (also genes).
(unnecessary) edit #2: guess it's worth mentioning that sechskies is also a group who have been together since 1997 and were last reported preparing to make comeback a couple of months ago.

this is "most popular" as in, mostly, the song with more views on UA-cam. a lot of groups have more popular songs or more than one popular song... so if you feel like you kinda dig one group, look them up more.

Aliii Rxsa the industry is sexist and women aren’t seen as desirable or marketable to a male audience once they’re over/close to 30 but men are still considered marketable to a female audience at that age. thats why ggs tend to get less popular over time, as well as the older they get the larger the percentage of female fans vs male fans they have gets. companies are also infamous for mistreating their ggs vs their bgs, as well as the fact that bgs tend to have more dedicated female fanbases that can support them past the 7 year threshold that tends to be the end for a lot of ggs

I guess you could call me a 2nd gen stan, my introduction to Korean music was DBSK , Big Bang , BoA, Wonder Girls, Super Junior, Epik High, etc back in 2005/2006 when UA-cam was just starting up. Even back then there were plenty of people outside of Korea interested in Kpop but it was A LOT harder to find videos about the groups or the content would get claimed as copyright infringement and you wouldn’t be able to watch (especially music shows or award shows). I think a lot has changed in terms of availability these days which has helped a lot.

Bro, you guys have barely scratched the surface of Kpop! groups like Super Junior, Big Bang, TVXQ, Shinee are legends in KPOP.
Believe it or not, out of all the groups in this compilation, only B.A.P and Wanna One have officially disbanded since it was uploaded. Several of them like Block B, Infinite, TVXQ, and Shinee aren't active at the moment because members are either fousing on solo work or there are members enlisted in the military (all korean men must enlist for service for about 2 years). More boy groups overcome the "7 year curse" which is typically how long most Kpop company contracts are, than girl groups, meaning they renew their contracts with their company and continue promoting as a group rather than disbanding. So surprisingly, Super Junior is not the oldest Kpop group.
Also, not to discredit their talents or anything because they are amazing, but most of the groups who's debut "blew them up" came from large companies like SM, JYP, and YG, companies who already have other groups so when they debut a new group, other group's fans are more enticed to check them out and since they're from a famous company, people keep an eye out for their debuts.

B.A.P so sad that they disband, I mean their debut song is also popular because they brought a whole new concept of being the blonde group and they were known for their rap and their song concept they were always talking about the society, if only people appreciated them more, they will be popular as BTS OR EXO tho!!! They deserve it so much, truly so sad they disband 😭😭😭😭

YOOO THEY WERE SO SHOOK TO SEE SUPER JUNIOR IN 2005 DEBUTED 😂😂. what’s crazy to me is that even though they lost a lot of members, they’re still together AND still active. i loved super junior up until 2018 with lo siento and i slowly went away from them because like you guys said, kpop is a hard industry to debut in and there’s soloists and groups debuting left and right and it’s hard to keep up with them.

INFORMATION OF THE NCT SUBUNITS ! ( WARNING: this is a long one )
NCT 127 - making their debut on july 7 2016, nct 127 consists of 10 members: taeil, johnny, taeyong, doyoung, yuta, jaehyun, winwin, jungwoo, mark, and haechan. member winwin is currently busy promoting with wayv (i'll expand more on them later on) so he's most likely not coming back, and member jungwoo is on hiatus due to health related issues. nct 127 is one of the nct subunits that focus on catering to the korean market and one of the two that has made big moves in the western market. the "127" in nct 127 are the longitudinal coordinates of seoul which is basically them stating they're based there in seoul, south korea.
NCT U - debuting on april 9 2016, nct u is the first nct subunit. instead of having a fixed lineup of members like nct 127, nct u members switch every comeback. recently they released a christmas sounding ballad for the holidays and members present were: taeil, doyoung, jaehyun, and haechan. however past members that have been present for other comebacks are: taeyong, kun, ten, winwin, jungwoo, lucas, and mark. the "u" in nct u stands for united where some members come as one and promote for different comebacks.
NCT DREAM - nct dream was the last nct subunit to debut in 2016 on august 24 and just like nct u they are a rotational subunit. however nct dream focus on being the youthful counterpart of nct as a whole so they are basically a group of the youngest members. because they need to maintain their youthful image, once the members turn 19 they are expected to graduate and promote in other nct subunits. members that are due to graduate soon but have no official date yet are: renjun, jeno, haechan, and jaemin. leaving nct dream with just 2 members: chenle and jisung, but more are on their way (i'll expand more on that in the general nct section). mark was a previous member however on december 31 of last year he graduated.
WAYV - debuting on january 17 2019 makes them the most recent nct subunit to date. consisting of members: kun, ten, winwin, lucas, xiaojun, hendery, and yangyang, wayv is the nct subunit focused on appealing to the chinese market. all of the members except one (ten) are chinese. xiaojun, hendery, and yangyang are actually one of the more recent SM rookies (trainees under SM Entertainment).
INFORMATION ON NCT AS A WHOLE !
NCT - nct are a group formed under SM Entertainment that currently consists of 21 members (overwhelming but i'll explain an easy way to get to know them) and 4 subunits. NCT is actually abbreviated for Neo Culture Technology which basically means the amount of members is limitless, basically infinite. so as members graduate or stop promoting with certain subunits, other members join or promote.
HOW TO GET TO KNOW THEM - there are really good guides that talk about the different subunits separately, some go into all the members in depth (xiaojun, hendery, and yangyang ones may be harder to find since they're newer members), and others just give brief overviews of ALL the members. i personally learned them by unit and went from there. not to mention all the members have very unique and different personalities as well as their looks so i think it'll be relatively easy. but key is not to get stressed, it may seem overwhelming at first but it really easy.
    ALL THE MEMBERS !
TAEYONG - korean. 127 and nct's overall leader. born on july 1 1995. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127.
TAEIL - korean. eldest member of nct. born on june 14 1994. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127.
JOHNNY - korean-american, born in chicago on february 9 1995. SUBUNITS: nct 127.
YUTA - japanese, born in osaka on october 26 1995. SUBUNITS: nct 127.
KUN - chinese. leader of wayv. born on january 1 1996. SUBUNITS: nct u, wayv.
DOYOUNG - korean. born on february 1 1996. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127.
TEN - thai, born in bangkok on february 27 1996. SUBUNITS: nct u, wayv.
JAEHYUN - korean, raised in connecticut on february 14 1997. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127.
WINWIN - chinese. born on october 28 1997. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127, wayv.
JUNGWOO - korean. born on february 19 1998. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127.
LUCAS - thai-chinese, born in hong kong on january 25 1999. SUBUNITS: nct u, wayv.
MARK - korean-canadian, born in toronto on august 2 1999. SUBUNITS: nct u, nct 127.
XIAOJUN - chinese. born on august 8 1999. SUBUNIT: wayv.
HENDERY - chinese. born on september 28 1999. SUBUNIT: wayv.
RENJUN - chinese. born on march 23 2000. SUBUNIT: nct dream (graduating soon).
JENO - korean. born on april 23 2000. SUBUNIT: nct dream (graduating soon).
HAECHAN - korean. born on june 6 2000. SUBUNIT: nct 127, nct u, same as renjun.
JAEMIN - korean. born on august 13 2000. SUBUNIT: nct dream (graduating soon).
YANGYANG - chinese-german. born in taiwan on october 10 2000. SUBUNIT: wayv.

You guys don't know what grunge is lol grunge fashion wise is basically wearing a farmer's plaid shirt either tied around your waist or unbuttoned with a band/graphic t-shirt, ripped jeans a necklace made out of safety pins and unkempt hair, what you keep calling grunge in multiple videos is either emo or punk with goth elements.

BIGBANG and SUJU are like LEGEND in KPOP.. because they've been around for more than a decade, and they are still have a big name... but the one who got KING OF KPOP is BIGBANG tho.. you will know why BIGBANG is more famous, including how they already been in international music award in 2011... and they're still blew up everytime they make a comeback.. these recent two years they havent been around since all the members going in militiary almost in the same time that make them took some hiatus, but they will be back in 2020, thats why I'm so excited... and I LOVE SUJU a lot... they are still doing music even after a decades like what I've imagine since 2009 I know them,... they've been proven that their resolution isnt weak... they are doing even great music now,... but since I love Hip hop genre a lot, thats why BIGBANG steal my heart, but I love SUJU a lot.. I even can sing almost all songs in their old album... LOL

ASTRO - debuted in 2016. they have 6 members and were named by Billboard as one of the best new K-pop groups of 2016. they are stiil together. my favorite song of them is "all night" and their latest comeback, Blue Flame, was released in november.
PENTAGON - debuted in 2016. they had originally 10 members, but e´dawn left the group (if you haven´t, you should check out his debut solo). They were introduced through the Mnet survival show Pentagon Maker. my favorite song of them is "shine". they are still together. also, kino is my bias.
NCT DREAM - is a nct unit. they debuted in 2016. The group follows an admission-graduation system, where they graduate from the unit after reaching the Korean age of 20. they debuted originally with 7 members. mark graduated from the group in 2018. honestly, nct are one of the most complicated groups out there, they have 21 members, and took me awhile to get used to it. they are still together.
BTOB - one of the messiest, funniest and crackheads groups out there, honestly. they debuted in 2012. they have 7 members. three of the members are doing their mandatory military service. they are still together.
B.A.P - i honestly have so much love for this group. debuted in 2012. they had 6 members. they disbanded in 2019. they had a lot of problems with their company, because TS Entertainment is trash. it was reported that the group had filed a lawsuit against their label to nullify their contract, claiming unfair working conditions and profit distribution, including statements claiming that of the US$9 million the group had earned over the three years, each member had been paid a total of US$18,000. However, the following day, TS Entertainment issued a press release refuting the claims made, stating that there were "neither such maltreatment to the artists nor unfair clauses in the contract.” Their statements were challenged when B.A.P released another statement claiming lack of accountability and saying that they were considering filing for defamation of character. In 2018, members Yongguk and Zelo left the group after their contract with TS Entertainment expired. On February 18, 2019 the remaining four members also left TS Entertainment. However, member Jongup confirmed the possibility of reunion in the future. Also, you should check their solo activities. by the way yongguk is my bias.
BLOCK B - debuted in 2011. they have 7 members. they also had a lot of problems with the agengy. Block B members, "During the signing of the exclusive contract, it was promised that in addition to providing proper training opportunity and facilities, we would be paid on every 25th of the following month…However, the agency has not paid us for nearly one year since April 2011."[12] (It's not clear whether it is 2011 or 2012 since the quote in the article states that it is nearly a year, but April 2011 would be well over a year). "It started last year in March when one member's contract was ended and his portion of the pay was calculated. appearance fees from events as well as pay from SBS drama 'Phantom's OST, MBC drama 'Golden Time' OST, and funds collected from the inauguration of our Japanese fan site's fan club, and more for a total of 10 things, have been omitted." They added, "The CEO of the agency, Mr. Lee, has also disappeared with the 70,000,000 KRW (~66,000 USD) that he collected from the members' parents." On May 20, 2013, it was reported that Mr. Lee had committed suicide. they left the company, and joined anther one, as a group. Most of them are doing their mandatory military service. you shold also check their solo activities.
IKON - this group deverved so much better. they would be so big right now if it wasn´t for tehir shitty company (yg entertainment). debuted in 2015. The group was first introduced in the reality survival program WIN: Who is Next as "Team B". After that, Team B went on to appear in the 2014 reality survival program Mix & Match, which determined the final seven-member lineup of iKon. B.I announced his departure from the group on his personal Instagram account after news agency Dispatch unearthed KakaoTalk messages from three years prior, outlining his attempt to purchase marijuana and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) from an undisclosed female dealer. He was also accused of evading police charges. they are still together.
NU´EST - debuted in 2012. they have 5 members. one of the members was part of the group wanna one. (i don´t know much about them sorry)
BEAST/HIGHLIGHT - they debuted in 2009. they have 4 members. they changed the name of the group, because they changed labels. Beast initially received attention for the lack of industry success previously experienced by its members, with media outlets referring to them as "a group of recycled material." Junhyung announced his departure from Highlight after he admitted to watching illegal videos sent to him by singer Jung Joon-young, who is under investigation for secretly filming women during sex. (there was a huge scandal about this last year). they are still together.
INFINITE - a crackhead group. debuted in 2010. they have 6 members. most of the members are doing their mandatory military service.
WINNER - debuted in 2013 through reality survival program WIN: Who Is Next. they have 4 members. they are still together. if you haven´t, you should check out their solo activities.
NCT U - subunit of nct. debuted in 2016. they have 6 members. nut they keep adding members according to their songs. they said on a korean show, Weekly Idol, that the theme of the sub unit consists of having members that fits in each song the best. (don´t know if that makes sense). they are still together.
MONSTA X - you said you´ve heard about them before, so there´s not much to say, but last year, one of the members left the group, wonho, departed following recent allegations, and that the company intends to "hold legal liability" for "malicious and distorted claims" about him. Fans have since shown their support for both Wonho and the group, expressing their disapproval and requesting Starship that he be reinstated back into the group. which made me reaaly sad, because he was my bias.
SEVENTEEN - you´ve heard of them, so there not much to say. but they known as the choreography kings. my favorite song of them is "clap". they have 13 members.
WANNA ONE - i´m not a fan of wanna one. i don´t usually stan groups that were appart of reality shows, because they always end up disbanding.
NCT 127 - nct sub unit. debuted in 2016. they have 10 members. Their name is a combination of the acronym for Neo Culture Technology which is their meaning for their unlimited members, and the number 127, which represents the longitudinal coordinate of Seoul. my bias is jungwoo.
GOT7 - my ult group. debuted in 2014. they have 7 members. my bias is jaebum (JB) and my favorite song is "Face".
BTS - everyone knows about them. my favorite song of them is "Let Me Know".
EXO- the vocal kings. my favorite song of them is "Miracles in December" and "Universe".
SHINEE - this group deserves so much love. debuted in 2008. they called the princes of kpop. they originally a 5 mebers group, but jonghyun died in 2017 (RIP).
2PM - debuted in 2018. originally 7 members. one of the members, jay park, left the group articles surfaced on the internet regarding Jaebeom's posts from 2005 on his personal Myspace account, in which he expressed his dislike for Korea while still a trainee for JYP Entertainment. Jaebeom issued an apology regarding this matter. Although some demanded that Jaebeom should be forced out of 2PM, JYP Entertainment CEO Park Jin-young stated lent the singer a vote of confidence, suggesting that he would remain in the group. Yet the following day, Jaebeom announced on his official fancafe that he would leave the group and return to the United States for a while to calm the situation. He planned to return to school and improve his understanding of music. At the same time, he apologized to his fellow band members for not being a good leader and older brother for them. He also promised to come back as a better person. they disbanded in 2016. you should also check out jay park solo activities (he´s owns 2 companies right now)
SUPER JUNIOR - a crackhead group. debuted in 2005. originally 13 members. they were divided in smaller groups, simultaneously targeting different music industries and audiences. Individually, the members have also branched out into hosting, presenting and acting, and their successes and popularity as all-rounded entertainers have led other Korean entertainment managements to also begin training their music groups in other aspects of the entertainment industry. as of last year, they have 9 active members. Super Junior was the best-selling K-pop artist for four years in a row. they are still together.
BIG BANG - the kings of kpop. debuted in 2006. originally 5 member group, seungri announced his retirement from the entertainment industry due to scandals surrounding the Burning Sun nightclub, resulting in his departure from Big Bang. they are going to perform this year at coachella. they are still together. all of the members completed their mandatory military service.
TVXQ - Their name roughly translates to "Rising Gods of the East". they debuted in 2003. they were a 5 member group. now, just 2 of them. TVXQ have become one of Asia's most successful music acts of their generation. They are often referred to as "Asia's Stars" and the "Kings of K-pop" and are also Japan's best-selling foreign artist in CD singles of all time and Billboard has described the group as "K-pop royalty". they are still together.

Okay, I was waiting the whole video for VIXX to show up, and they DIDN'T, which is an absolute CRIME on the part of the video editor. VIXX debuted in the same year as EXO (2012) and they're known as the Concept Kings of Kpop because of how their music, lyrics, choreography, and overall stage performances are crafted together to tell a story or concept. They've covered everything from living voodoo dolls, to cyborgs, to Greek Mythology; they can go from a cute and bright concept to dark and creepy at the drop of a hat and nail every single vibe and aesthetic they try their hand at because of how hard they commit to every aspect of the performance. I'd definitely recommend checking out their stuff at some point, particularly Voodoo Doll, Error, or Shangri-La.
Other groups I'd recommend are Astro (started out with a fun and fresh concept which got them a lot of attention, though their company has been moving them away from that with their most recent concept, much to my personal chagrin TT) and SHINee, particularly youngest member Taemin's solo work, which I think you both would be very much into, as he's considered one of the very best dancers in all of Kpop.

Most of the groups that blow up with their debut song, or very shortly after come from very big and well established companies in SK which have the publics attention as well as interest from kpop fans at the time. A few that had the same song as a debut and their breakout hit also came from popular audition programs. Groups from smaller companies almost never make it to the top ranks of kpop groups, and it is extremely rare for them to come out of the gate swinging with a hit.

Most popular doesn't mean it's recent. Some groups are still active but aren't that much popular now than their earlier years. Bigbang might be one of the few that stayed consistent of being popular throughout the years. Many artists acknowledge tgem for that.

A lot of these groups are either still continuing, disbanded, or enlistment. Korean male 28 and older have to do mandatory military service for a certain time unless they’re exempt. Kpop boy groups rarely get exempt so they enlist and come back to there groups

Seventeen consists of 13 members and they have 3 sub units of dance, rap, and vocal and they are united as one team. So if you add 13+3+1 it equals 17. They are a big group but they use it to their advantage with amazing top notch in sync choreography and they are self producing group😎. They make the dance, song and lyrics themselves. You should check them out! They are amazing 😉

K-pop has been a big thing in Asia since the 80s. It's as old as your Hollywood pop culture. Just because you only found out about it now, doesn't mean it didn't exist or wasn't popular before you knew about it.
In Asia K-pop is a billion dollar industry and parents and grandparents also have idols they liked or like. In fact, my own parents met at a K-pop concert in the 90s. There are literally thousands of groups and you can't expect one video to encompass them all. The popularity of older K-pop was insane. It was equivalent to the popularity of k-pop now, in an age where internet and networking didn't exist.
Groups like Epik high, Shinhwa, H.O.T. and g.o.d. have been together for 20 years plus and even though they're married with kids and all, they are still together. Usually, boy groups tend to have a longer lifespan than girl groups which is why most of the older groups are male. Please check them out! It's really interesting to see how they've changed and been in K-pop for decades.

Kinda funny how you said you reacted to a lot of Kpop but didn’t know most of these groups- old generation Kpop is iconic, it’s kinda sad most Kpop fans of people who listen to Kpop nowadays don’t know the history of kpop

I’ve been into Kpop since 2010 and I’ve never noticed or thought about how 2013 and the years prior was the grunge era of kpop until you guys pointed it out! It’s funny cause now that I think back to that time it’s most definitely accurate haha

Most older groups are still together, what I noticed is that groups don't disband easily in kpop unless the group looses too much fame and the company can not keep them but even then some stay strong and stay together.

just wanted to say that wanna one is a disbanded group! they debuted after participating in a survival show called produce 101 as individuals from different companies, the show is about competing against other teams in different missions and then you get eliminated one by one and then it eventually formed wanna one. they had a one year contract if im not remembering wrong, and that's why they disbanded.

That "different sounding" Kpop you speak of is the legit Kpop sounds that started it all at an international scale when people around the world began to get hooked to the genre way before BTS or even PSY blew up. 2007-2012 is known as the golden age of Kpop thanks to the likes of Wonder Girls, SNSD, KARA, 2ne1, Super Junior, TVXQ, Big Bang and Shinee. You guys really need to brush up on your Kpop, at least the most important and influential groups and their legacies.

K-Pop as we know it has been around since the 90s and has been popular in asia for a long time! and k-pop groubs have been performing all over the world. Rain (a korean solo artist) had a concert in New York as early as 2006. K-Pop has always been attracting fans from all over the world but it took until now for it to be considered "mainstream" in america, but i think it's really weird that america is the standard for it. western media likes to ignore the huge success k-pop had in the last 20-30 years
