  • Welcome to Network Engineer Pro. I'm Rafael, CCIE 64356. Have you ever wanted to build your own virtualization server so you can studying for certs like the CCNA, CCNP and CCIE? Or easily run CML, GNS, EVE-NG, Automation, CSR1000v and more? If so then check out part 2 of my journey to build a virtualization beast for network engineers, it's easy and I want to show you all the steps in the process.
    I purchased this used Dell PowerEdge R620 from newegg.

    In today's video which is part 2 of 3, I am taking my new to me, Dell PowerEdge R620 and installing ESXi 6.7. The end goal is to turn this server into a virtualization beast for network engineers to handle CML, GNS, EVE-NG, Automation, CSR1000v and more. I want to show you all the steps in the process. This is a 3 part mini series.
    In part 1 I configured the iDRAC7 port and setup a RAID 5.
    • Network Engineer's ESX...
    Part 2 (This video) is downloading and installing ESXi 6.7 on my Dell PowerEdge R620.
    Part 3 is creating a VM and installing EVE-NG Community Edition.
    • Network Engineer's ESX...
    How to import Cisco Modeling Labs (CML) IOSv Router & Switch images into EVE-NG
    • How to import IOSv Rou...
    So let me tell you why I am building this server.
    The reason I got this server is because I'm a network engineer, I'm constantly testing and labbing things out for work, studying for certifications or i just straight up forgot how something works so i go an lab it out.
    I use a combination of csr1000v's, cisco modeling labs, eve-ng and all kinds of other things. I was running all those on VMware workstation player, which is a type 2 hypervisor installed on my windows 10 pc.
    That windows 10 pc is also used for video editing, photoshop and gaming and it was just starting to be too much for it and i was running out of resources.
    So I wanted to get something dedicated just for networking and labbing purposes that I don't have to worry about running out of resources for hopefully a long time.
    I hope this video helps someone.

    great set of videos! - I noticed that on one of the screen, there is a message about a licence expiring in 60 days - will that be a problem ?

    • @NetworkEngineerPro
      @NetworkEngineerPro  2 роки тому

      Hi Simon, the 60 day license is for some of the advanced features that I will never really use so its not a problem for me. They do offer a free license that can be applied to the server and works great for what I use it for. Thanks for watching I appreciate it !

    Perfect , I have watched entire playlist in one go..
    Few Questions ;
    1. Do I need need plugin the bootable USB drive when ever I want to boot ESXi from usb thumb drive or its just one time process ?
    2. Does the license of ESXi based upon the no of CPU cores ? are you using free version or licensed version
    3. Can I just use the idrac console to login into the esxi and boot EVE-VM?

    • @NetworkEngineerPro
      @NetworkEngineerPro  2 роки тому

      Hi Deepak, sorry for the delay and thanks for watching ! 1. If you want to boot from the usb every time you should leave it plugged in. It was a one time process for me because i loaded esxi onto my hard drives from that usb. 2. I am using the free version. I believe its limited to 2 physical CPU's. 8 vCPU max per vm. Here are some details on the free license limits. www.nakivo.com/blog/free-vmware-esxi-restrictions-limitations/ 3. I haven't tried it that way, you may need to hit it from a web browser. Thanks again for watching.

    I have the same server and specs. Luckily i found you on here. Can you tell me how the performance is running eve-ng and labs. Thank you!

      Hey David, it has been running great. EVE-NG is my favorite and i have tested big 30-40 IOSv node topologies. This server can handle alot!

  • @dalehopkinson7116
    @dalehopkinson7116 2 роки тому +1

    Do you have any suggestions on hardware specs ? I'm going to setup a server environment at work with permanently available CML access but I really can't find a good way to figure out the hardware specs I would need for the server. My topologies could reach up to 40 nodes.

    • @NetworkEngineerPro
      @NetworkEngineerPro  2 роки тому

      Hello Dale, if you want to use my specs from the Part 1 video as reference. 40 vIOS routers from CML use 10% of my 128GB of RAM and about 50% of the host CPU.

    Esxi has a limit of 60 days for trial, how can I counter it ?
    Unlimited free version is only for 2CPU system but I have a smaller tower which has 8 CPU

    • @NetworkEngineerPro
      @NetworkEngineerPro  3 роки тому

      So your host has 8 physical CPU's ? I'm not sure a way around that unfortunately with the free one. Except for once the 60 days expire, re-install esxi again.
