I think the blade is not a katana blade.It looks like a cavalry saber.That gives me comfort to know that no Japanese sword should ever be treated with such disregard.
consider it was beyond redemption with that much rust......also, you never heat treat a blade in broad daylight.....should be done in darken conditions to see the right color before quenching...

Indeed not a katana. The blade (nagasa) and shinken are too short to be a katana. Looks more like a wakizashi (short sword). Together with a katana this is named Daishō
I would have done things differently, but it was dead and done as whatever it was but got a second life. It might not even be Japanese. It has some peculiar features. China and Korea made some very katana like swords.

Then call fixing the damage into a worse state than it began as "restoration". These guys are just 3rd worlders begging for views with no idea how a well made sword is to be done.
Most of the time, I love your work... But this time, it's a big no! If it's a real katana (which is most likely not), you ruined it. Your way of heating it and grind it with the machine is the exact opposite of what you should do... Some works require a mastership you haven't...
Парень, ты убийца мечей! Зонная закалка тем и хороша, что клинок свободно рихтуется на холодную. Но рихтуется без ударов. Ни в коем случае нельзя было греть клинок. Такие клинки калятся только один раз. Спуски сведены, и тонкая кромка при нагреве, теряет весь углерод. В общем на это больно смотреть.....
малость понимаю о чем речь, приходилось... но никогда не видел "просто" какой либо закалки, . когда деталь не имеет даже темно вишневый цвет свечения нагрева!!!! о чем может идти речь?, а вот когда правил клинок нагрел до отпуска!!!
@@АнатолийС-г3у Да не нужно было его вообще греть, просто выровнять между двух деревянных рычагов. На соревнованиях по тамэсигири, специально присутствует такой человек, который рихтует клинки мечей. Он "вооружен" двумя деревянными колодками в виде рычагов, и если у "самурая" рука дрогнет, то этот человек выравнивает клинок. Зонная закалка тем и хороша, что клинки легко гнутся и так же легко выравниваются. Ну тут я конечно погорячился, согнуть клинок не так то просто, но такое иногда происходит. Потом, термичка тонкой полосы. У Японцев там идёт два вида глины, одна из них наносится на будущую кромку и препятствует обезуглероживания. А в этом ролике, ничего подобного нет!!!!! Мало того что уничтожен первоначальный рисунок хамона, так ещё и углерод выгорел на кромке. И такую полосу если и дасться единиц на 45-50 закалить, то это будет ещё и отлично. Только вот заточку держать, такой клинок уже не сможет.... По этому опять повторюсь, что ролик о том как испортить хорошую вещь.....

A valuable cultural asset was lost in front of my eyes through ignorant torture.
It was a fake katana. No Hamon. No smith's signature (admittedly some smiths didn't put a signature). Warped. Fake rust (no rust pitting) and the groove was only on 1 side.
This blade was not made in the traditional bladesmith manner, as a samurai katana would have been. As said elsewhere, it has no hammon, & it has a fuller, which samurai blades did not have. If the blade is of genuine Japanese origin, it's very likely a factory-made blade for a WWII Japanese officer or NCO sword, of which they made a great many.
No pitting tells me this is fake I found a real navy sword, and then had lots of pitting when I remove the rust, and the pitting is very deep not sure how to remove it, but this sword had none of that pity that I found in mine
I was so glad this isn’t a real japanese blade, not even a cheap WW2 blade. The fact is has no markings on it and a bo-hi on one side off the blade with a rounded edge is enough for me to tell for sure, this wasn’t a real japanese blade, and never will it be!
I read these comments and am trying to understand your history, pride & disappointment in this sword being treated so. I also thought of your initial Ancestral Katana makers and the years it took to create one blade. The power tools used for the restoration had me realize how long just drilling a hole or any slot opening in metal, hammering the layers of steel that had to be made, etc. Please reply why this isn't correct so you can educate me. Блин, ну с рукоятью накосячил, моё почтение. Обмотка шнуром на отъ...сь. бляшек "менукэ" нет. С цубой, то-же косяк на косяке. На цубе катаны, должно быть два отверстия, для малого ножа, и "швайки". Для развызывания шнуров. Нож и "щвайка", соответственно в пазах ножен. Нож с наружи, "швайка" внутри.
With a thick heavy "tsuba" and Christmas ribbon for the "tsuka ito," with the blade ridge ground flat, any existing hamon (temper line) destroyed, and the temper annealed out of the blade, leaving it soft, it's now too dangerous to be a child's toy, and far too ugly to be anything else. What was originally worth very little is now completely worthless. I'd pay money to keep it OUT of my house!
I can only hope that this was ether A. A cheap knockoff katana or B. A relic found on a field from ww2. Because I am a martial artist and a practitioner of the way of the katana. For someone to willingly and knowingly let there Katana get to the state it was in the beginning of this video is an outrage. If you can’t or don’t know how to care for the sword don’t own it. In Japanese belief the katana is the heart and soul of the samurai it was cared for above everything else in a samurai’s life and was with him till his death. It’s great you brought this one back I hope you won’t let it get to that condition in the future.
I did not see a makers signature on the tange, so I believe it is safe to say that it was either a cheap knockoff (possibly made in China) or a WW2 officers sword that was somewhat mass produced.

take too much metal off, the blade will be thin and weak if inner core is exposed....this katana looks to be severely rusted...however, is that rust or a coating that is being removed?
That all depends on what you think a real Katana is...if you mean ancient you are correct but a Katana doesn't have to be old to do its job. Katana just means blade and it looks like a blade to me. I'm pretty sure it would take your arm off if a skilled person used it.
The video serves its purpose, if the sword was a reproduction then certain skills can be obtained on restoring it to an un-rusted repo state. Few people these days can even do that. So take it for what it is. They say anyone can crash a plane but you have to have enough skill to get it into the air, aim it to where it won't harm any people or plants and bail out before it crashes, all that takes a certain level of skill, balls and purpose. Will make a nice wall ornament as long as you say what it is and was.

Скажем так, это просто железка для косплея. Но ведь главное, это название ролика, а не то, что там происходит. Вот все и купились на заголовок 🤪

Nice resto but this is a mass produced sword made for the lower ranks, genuine katanas were reserved for the officer class who often carried family katanas which often were priceless relics hundreds of years old.
It must be mass produced factory replica. No marking or makers mark engraved on the handle. I don't think its that old either there was practically no pitting on the blade after first clean. Good effort though.
What a great refurbishment of something that most people would have considered junk and thrown away. The ability to make, fix, and maintain weapons in the time of crisis is worth its weight in gold 👍
What a half assed job. You did "OK" about half the way thru the blade resto but then turned armature. That short tang will split the handle the first time you use it. You could have used some nicer material for the hardware. and then what did you wrap it with...looked like chap ribbon. So sad, this blade could have been turned into a work of art. What a waste.
I beg to differ! In world war 2, the swords that were being made were very cheaply produced. I have 4 genuine WW2 officer swords and two of them are bent! There where massed produced ones and hand made ones. Usually the hand made ones went to the higher ranked officers.
Agree with Figjamxlaststar. I've seen many blades bend in use (lived in Japan, studied battodo in Japan) and they can be bent back true; that is the beauty of a well-made Japanese sword.
Thankfully this is a mass produced sword, if it was real you would definitely be going to hell for the sins you committed during your process of restoring this blade.🤨

ここまで来るともう復元ではなく破壊に近いよ。
動画冒頭で、日本刀に特有の刀身の反りがあまり無いことから、おそらく火災に遭遇した刀身と推測しました。つまり最低限の復元でさえ、本当に詳しい鍛冶師でなければ不可能でした。
温度の不安定な焚き火で焼いたことで、反りがさらに減っています。これは鋼の質が落ち、硬い刃物ではなく形を保てないほど柔らかい鉄板になった明確な証拠です。
最後のペットボトルカットですが、本物の日本刀ならばボトル下部は台座に残ります。これはそれだけ鋭利に切る、そして切る以外の圧力を与えないことを示します。台座から吹き飛ぶのは、切るではなく押しのける力が発生しています。
本当に、本当に残念ですが、この刀は日本刀としては死んでしまったようです。

何かの職人さん何だろうけど酷すぎるな、最低限勉強して欲しい、、、
いや，錆取り液NGです．
うち鍛冶屋だったんで，これよりもっと朽ち落ちた刀が仕事場から出てきて，錆取り液に漬けた事があります．
当然中和しないといけない訳だけど，現代の鋼材と違って，玉鋼の粒子構造の中に液が染み込むらしく，中和しきれずに内側から無限にサビが湧いて来るようになりました．
もともと無価値の刀の残骸でしかなかった(祖父がどこぞから入手したらしく，その時からボロボロで鑑定も通らなかったらしい)とは言え，それでもサビ取り液に漬けた罪悪感と後悔はしましたね．日本人として．

これもその一振りなのでしょう。

これは模造刀でしょうか本物の日本刀は玉鋼を何枚も折り重ねて鍛錬したものですからこのような腐食の仕方にはならないと思いますし所有した方は保管も丁寧なはずです．柄の拵えも作り方が全然違いますね三流映画の小道具のようです（笑）
これがなら、表題をとすべきであって、等と視聴者を欺く題をつけるべきではない。この題を信じて視聴した人の中で、日本刀を心から愛する人がいたとしたら、

Maybe, but if the blade is clean, strong, and sharp, then it was good work. The rest is artistic open to all/any opinions.

Блин, ну с рукоятью накосячил, моё почтение. Обмотка шнуром на отъ...сь. бляшек "менукэ" нет. С цубой, то-же косяк на косяке. На цубе катаны, должно быть два отверстия, для малого ножа, и "швайки". Для развызывания шнуров. Нож и "щвайка", соответственно в пазах ножен. Нож с наружи, "швайка" внутри.

With a thick heavy "tsuba" and Christmas ribbon for the "tsuka ito," with the blade ridge ground flat, any existing hamon (temper line) destroyed, and the temper annealed out of the blade, leaving it soft, it's now too dangerous to be a child's toy, and far too ugly to be anything else.
What was originally worth very little is now completely worthless. I'd pay money to keep it OUT of my house!

I can only hope that this was ether A. A cheap knockoff katana or B. A relic found on a field from ww2. Because I am a martial artist and a practitioner of the way of the katana. For someone to willingly and knowingly let there Katana get to the state it was in the beginning of this video is an outrage. If you can’t or don’t know how to care for the sword don’t own it. In Japanese belief the katana is the heart and soul of the samurai it was cared for above everything else in a samurai’s life and was with him till his death. It’s great you brought this one back I hope you won’t let it get to that condition in the future.

It's very clearly mass produced junk, there aren't even any folds in the steel
I did not see a makers signature on the tange, so I believe it is safe to say that it was either a cheap knockoff (possibly made in China) or a WW2 officers sword that was somewhat mass produced.
@@jackn2236 many valuable nihonto don’t have signatures so that is not a good way of determining whether it is authentic or not
@@outsideiskrrtinsideihurt699 that is very true. Only the absolute top sword smith in Japan put there signatures on the tang so. I say again I hope this was not a true real Katana if it was I would be heartbroken.
take too much metal off, the blade will be thin and weak if inner core is exposed....this katana looks to be severely rusted...however, is that rust or a coating that is being removed?
What a mess. You did a new differential quench on a blade that's already curved...this is a video of what not to do. :(

That all depends on what you think a real Katana is...if you mean ancient you are correct but a Katana doesn't have to be old to do its job. Katana just means blade and it looks like a blade to me. I'm pretty sure it would take your arm off if a skilled person used it.
Not a real katana, presumably not made of the superior magical ancient steel.
For me à katana remain a sword made of strong Steel and manufactured by a very competent blacksmith

The video serves its purpose, if the sword was a reproduction then certain skills can be obtained on restoring it to an un-rusted repo state. Few people these days can even do that. So take it for what it is. They say anyone can crash a plane but you have to have enough skill to get it into the air, aim it to where it won't harm any people or plants and bail out before it crashes, all that takes a certain level of skill, balls and purpose. Will make a nice wall ornament as long as you say what it is and was.

Попробую объяснить происходящее. Товарищ отслесарил на скорую руку кусок "сыромятины", потом сунул его в болото примерно на полгода, затем достал и так же на скорую руку привёл в некое подобие меча. Скажем так, это просто железка для косплея. Но ведь главное, это название ролика, а не то, что там происходит. Вот все и купились на заголовок 🤪

Nice resto but this is a mass produced sword made for the lower ranks, genuine katanas were reserved for the officer class who often carried family katanas which often were priceless relics hundreds of years old.

It must be mass produced factory replica. No marking or makers mark engraved on the handle. I don't think its that old either there was practically no pitting on the blade after first clean. Good effort though.

What a great refurbishment of something that most people would have considered junk and thrown away. The ability to make, fix, and maintain weapons in the time of crisis is worth its weight in gold 👍

What a half assed job. You did "OK" about half the way thru the blade resto but then turned armature. That short tang will split the handle the first time you use it. You could have used some nicer material for the hardware. and then what did you wrap it with...looked like chap ribbon. So sad, this blade could have been turned into a work of art. What a waste.

I beg to differ! In world war 2, the swords that were being made were very cheaply produced. I have 4 genuine WW2 officer swords and two of them are bent! There where massed produced ones and hand made ones. Usually the hand made ones went to the higher ranked officers.
Agree with Figjamxlaststar. I've seen many blades bend in use (lived in Japan, studied battodo in Japan) and they can be bent back true; that is the beauty of a well-made Japanese sword.

As a Japanese person, I cannot recognize this as a Katana.
Its obviously a military grade sword, and not a samurai sword..but many folks dont know the difference.
