Unboxing DGT CENTAUR Chess Computer and How it Works

  • I unbox the DGT Centaur and demo all the key features. I also give my thoughts on who will enjoy this machine - and who might not. The DGT Centaur is unique in that it intelligently adapts to your chess play level while playing in a human-like style. This means you'll have a chance to win while being challenged! The Centaur really focuses on providing an intuitive, distraction free, and innovative chess playing experience, solo. If you or someone you know would love to play chess and is struggling to find a chess player at a skill level that's matched evenly, the Centaur is that perfect chess friend. While other chess computers boast hundreds of different features, DGT has packed only the most essential into the Centaur, keeping the experience free of complexity. For this reason, connoisseurs might be disappointed. It's more appealing to casual players wanting to play, practice, and improve their game and not so much for collectors - in my opinion. That said, it can play at it's highest at nearly world champion level, so you'll know that the hints, or analysis provided are very high level suggestions. What if you want to review a game of your own, or a game you saw somewhere? Setting it up on the Centaur is very easy. From this position you can then play or watch the computer's analysis of best moves. While the features are not as extensive as the most advanced computers - in fact very limited, the comfortable size and playability without dependence on the display is impressive.

I received my new DGT Centaur.
I spent some time with it, and I found I really like the way it plays. It does feel more 'natural' or 'human', than other engines. There isn't that 'wall of resistance' that you can feel when playing against a computer, once you played your first blunder. I'm spending more time with it than my DGT PI/SMART BOARD rig right now.
My initial impression was a good one. For a self contained chess computer, they did a great job. I really like the fact I can move the pieces naturally. Not 'press and set' them. I like that the board and the pieces are 'normal' sized not miniature pieces or board.
While the pieces do slide too easily, for my taste, over the board, if you knock them over or slide them out of place, the display has a record of where they are on the board. Just place them where they were. The board isn't as 'fragile' as some people made it out to be. The underside of the board isn't as 'fragile' as some would have you think. It is reinforced. The Centaur is powered by the supplied adapter, or it’s own internal battery when not plugged in. The unit worked with my power bank as well for charging the internal battery. The ELO rating of the DGT Centaur is rated between 300 and 3000, depending on the playing mode you selected.
Each game is like a 'give and take', 'push and pull', 'elastic' type game. It really does feel like you are playing someone around your level, giving you a good game. Way more enjoyable than getting SMASHED by an engine.
I think with this machine, in one of the first two modes (Friendly, Challenging), if you don’t blunder too badly, you could at least get draw, or win every now and then. It seems to force you to really pay attention, defend and not leave hanging pieces. If anything, the games are fun to play.
Even though the DGT PI/SMART BOARD rig has more customization, the Centaur is a great option for on the go play. People have criticized the DGT Centaur for not having an option to connect to a computer, or export games. Usually those who don’t own the unit, have complained about this. I don’t find this a drawback nor miss it, for the following reasons:
    1. It’s not designed to be that. It’s beauty is in it’s simplicity, and portability.
    2. I have the DGT Smart Board for that, and the DGT PI saves games.
    3. I know how to write my games down, as should any serious chess player should. If you can’t yet, there are phone applications that will help you record the game and email it to you. Blieb Chess Recorder is one.
    4. You really are able to concentrate on your game without the technology getting in your way or distracting you.
Things that set this machine apart from other self contained, stand alone, chess computers:
1.Size. The board isn't too big/small, nor are the pieces too small.
2.When playing, even though the computer tells you what move it wants, it will still continue to play if you choose another move for it. Other computers, will give you and error and stop if you don’t execute the move it displays. This feature is great for setting up openings, or positions you want.
3.The color, and the lighting system.
The low profile, and sleek design will draw eyes to it.
5.Very intuitive menu, you really don’t need the manual to use it.
    6. It has the strongest hardware under the hood, that I know of at 1GHz single-core CPU. 512MB
    Things I'm getting used to:
    1. Setting up a position from scratch. There is more menu stuff than the DGT PI/SMART BOARD rig requires.(Set pieces up on the board, and hit one button on DGT PI.) To Centaur's defense, the pieces aren't chipped, so you have to tell it where each piece you setup for your position. It's not hard just more menu button presses.
2.Analysis. I found it a little more tedious to do analysis on the Centaur than on the DGT PI/SMART BOARD rig, or Fritz/Chessbase software on the desktop computer. This comes as no surprise though.
While it does both tasks, it’s crown jewel is it’s adaptive play, and how easy it is to just turn it on and play, and get a good enjoyable game. Anytime. Anywhere.
I don’t regret the purchase of the DGT Centaur. I’ve enjoyed each game I’ve played on it.
I do believe, because of it’s self contained design, unique ‘human like’ play, and portability, it is worth the money spent. Like chess, it’s design is simple, however you’ll get hours and hours of awesome games and game play.

I now own a DGT Centaur and I played many games with it. Do not expect an easy opponent! Even playing against the "Friendly mode", games are quite tough and challenging. So if you are a total beginner or a weak unexperienced player, the Centaur will discourage you cause you have nearly no chance to win. In my opinion the style of play of the centaur is quite offensive if not agressive - it would be nice, if DGT publish a firmware update with an additional "easy level" which allows beginners to win too. But the Centaur is a usable machine - even though the built quality could really be higher and more worthy (everything feels very plastic, lightweight and a little bit measly), playing is fun cause making moves and playing feels very natural thanks to the led lights and the flawless recognition of the moves. Good thing is, that you dont have any cables, you can even use a compact powerbank to load the Centaur (no need for the power adapter). I hoping for a firmware update to export games in the PNG format. Furthermore I am looking for wooden chess pieces, cause the included plastic pieces are at best expedient.

This is a very good point. I was contacted by someone on a forum who wanted to know if the Centaur is right for him as he was a complete beginner. This was my answer:
You write that you are a absolute beginner. I interpret that as someone who just learnt the rules but is still developing his/her sight to see if a piece can be captured and doesn't know yet how to mate with K+Q vs K or K+R vs K. If that is the case you will lose against the Centaur your first games on the friendly setting. What happens is that Centaur will give you chances to make a comeback in the game but you will have to recognize the chances and if you have a winning position you will have to know how to mate your opponent. For example, you blunder a piece away Centaur on friendly will most of the time will blunder also. But if you don't see the blunder than you cannot punish Centaur.
So to be able to win sometimes on friendly you need the following skills:
You must be able to mate with the following material balances:
      K+R+R vs K
      K+Q vs K
      K+R vs K
and if you know how to play K+p vs K and recognize which positions win and how and which positions draw that would be a huge improvement in playing strength.
Next to that you must develop your sight when pieces can be captured and when your own pieces are under attack. But that will come with time and playing a lot.
The good news is that the Centaur is an excellent tool to train yourself in the endgames I mentioned above and have fun. Instead of trying to win a full game in the beginning you start by setting up the easiest endgame K+R+R vs K and try to win against the Centaur on expert level. If you can't win, swap positions and see how the computer handles the position and try again or lookup a instructions on youtube. I'm absolutely sure you will succeed within a few attempts. And if you can win 100% of the time change to the next endgame.
Final words. The friendly setting is not a "I will always lose" setting. I'm an experienced club player 1800 rating and will lose 3 from 10 games on friendly.
      Have fun!

All in all, I like it; as a standalone machine. As said elsewhere here it's reminiscent of Excalibur Grandmaster. I love the idea of using e-paper screen, but wish it was about twice the size so you won't be squinting at the board on it for setting back up. The adaptive strength has got to be a winner!

What I notice is that from a certain playing strength onward (my guess is 1600+) friendly mode is not really a viable option for a serious game. I'm an 1800 rated player (1900 USCF I guess) and I notice huge swings in playing strength during the games in friendly. It gives me illogical free tempo's , sometimes it doesn't recapture but then suddenly plays very strong to come back in the game. My biggest annoyance, endgames are often atrocious in friendly. If you're an experienced player you will definitely see the huge swings in strength during the game and that takes away from the enjoyment. Friendly is very suitable for beginning and developing players tho, and I do like it's not a "you will always win" level. But when you're getting above a certain playing strength you will recognize some very bad moves and then it's time to go to challenging mode.
Challenging mode is a completely different animal and much more subtle, I really enjoy playing against the Centaur in Challenging mode. It does make mistakes but not so obvious, I have to profit from positional mistakes and sometimes tactical combinations a few moves deep. It definitely punishes my mistakes but sometimes gives me more subtle chances to come back in the game It really feels like playing against someone a little above my strength but I do have chances.
What I really like is the game oriented design of the Centaur. It is made to play against and have fun doing it. Although I would have liked a bit more options to adjust playing strength the fact you can't also gives a strange sense of freedom. I do miss the option to play with time increment. You play, against someone around your own level or a fraction lower (friendly) or you play against someone a bit better (challenging) or if you like to be humiliated,... well that is covered too :) You don't have to worry about what level to set for an honest game, you start and it goes, I really like that. You want to take back a move, just take it back. You want to play a certain opening? Just ignore the computer moves and play some other moves until you reach the position you aim for and keep playing. The Centaur accepts the alternative moves. You don't have to use the menu or interface at all during the game, it's great. It is clearly meant for chess players not for chess computer nerds that like to tweak and experiment with all kinds of settings. It's also very useful for training certain positions. Just put it on the board and see if you can win that endgame vs the expert setting or can you hold that rook endgame with a pawn down. Great training.
What I don't like are the pieces. I think there is not enough contrast between the white pieces and the white squares. For that reason I made my own wooden set with some self adhesive aluminium radiator tape. Here's how: www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/dgt-centaur-wooden-pieces#comment-46464174 Maybe Chess House can bring a more professional solution on the market, I know there is a market for it. It looks much better and plays much more comfortable.
Al in all the DGT Centaur is a great chess-computer geared toward just playing. Friendly is a great mode for beginning and developing players. Challenging more suited for experienced club and tournament players. It is a little oversimplified and if you want to tweak settings and play against other computers or want a connection to your PC, this one is not for you.

It's an absolutely gorgeous chess computer, my only gripe is the absence of dual numbers and letters along all 4 sides of the board. I guess you can place it on some butchers paper and write them around the board yourself but most of the pro boards I've seen include them including DGT boards so it's a bit of a head scratcher that perhaps a rubber case around the edge wasn't included to both protect the edges of the board and to put the numbers and letters.

I own this machine and I defeated it's expert level yesterday without any aid or takebacks. It captured extra material on my queenside but completely missed out a mating attack in it's castled position due to which it had to surrender its queen. Also when I put it on analysis mode and replayed the game, it was still missing my winning moves and was showing the assessment in it's favour (-5.sth) and when I played those winning moves the assessment suddenly changed in my favour to +7. In the game when it was capturing extra material on the queenside, even I thought that I was losing until I actually started to win. The game was a complete gamble but it proved that the machine is beatable even at it's highest level. Also one thing I noticed is that the computer hurries with it's moves/ hints and it sometimes misses strongest moves and if you make a stronger move than those specified in hints it learns and puts that move first in the list of hints after a few secs when you again press the hint button. For those who don't know how to analyse the game from black side, start a game playing as black, make the first move of white and change the game mode to ' Analyses'. This is necessary because if you simply start a game with 'Analyses' mode you will always have to sit with White's pieces on your side.

As always a great video from Raphael and the Chess House. All in all, a nice little machine for that price point but dont expect too much.
I do own this machine (ordered it directly from DGT to get it at release date) and this is definitively plastics. Feels ok but not that sturdy. The back of the machine is quite strange actually. The e-Ink display is nice but you have to cope with its dimensions (a tad too small for a good reading even with the largest font) and its special refresh which is the way e-Ink displays work. The point of not having a power cord is actually AWESOME !
The board size is also very good but you will have to cope with the light circles (I do prefer simple 1 or 4 LED per squares). The combination of the board+chessmen makes the pieces moving / slidding too much on the board for my own taste as there is no felt on the bottom of the pieces and the board has no grip. I can smell that blitz games would be quite painful to do.
The strenght of this machine is very very good and is stronger than the Millenium Exclusive King / Lasker for sure (I have played the two machines against each others). The options for the Chess engine are very limited. You don't even have the standard cadences.
If you want something with more options, do pass your way as Raphael said, and get that Millenium Genius Exclusive, King or Lasker. It is double the price but worth it.
Ah, also forgot to say that Millenium will release in Fall 2019 a new machine called the King Performance with a similar price point. This new machine made of wood and plastic will have a strenght similar to the Millenium King (so weaker than the Centaur) but still plenty enought for most of us (the King is at around 2600 Elo). See it there: computerchess.com/en/the-king-performance-2/

Well said Fabrice. I enjoy reading your balanced comments here as well as on Hiarcs.net forum. You have significant experience with chess computers and I appreciate what you shared here.
The Centaur appears to be for those who would otherwise get overwhelmed with too many features. Up to this point DGT boards have required some technical savviness, or at the least some patience when first learning how they work. The Centaur breaks from that usual complexity and will be more enjoyed by those new to chess computers. Although, it may be at the expense of some features we would love to have seen.
The internal power and length of charge are great. It would be interesting to see if added felts would deal with the uber-slick piece movements for those who want a little more finesse.

  • @marcususa

It's ok, but I wouldn't pay the 400 USD it is going for. There needs to be more options, like importing .pgn files (USB or through wifi). I saw no mention of the engine being used. I would like to install an engine like Stockfish and set it to more than just 3 different "vague" levels. It would be better to get a regular wooden set ($100 price range) and then simply make moves with a computer or phone app. However, this is a nice start to something bigger down the road. I hope they improve upon it and offer different colors instead of the black and gray look.

This computer is built on Stockfish engine. What you're looking for is available in other chess computers that have extensive features with a lot of control. We thought there would be a least a few returns by now but the people who want this machine know exactly why they are getting it - simplicity. And they are keeping it and loving it. Is it perfect? no. Could it be better? yes. But it delivers a limited feature set with an ease of use that makes it enjoyable for many people.

@Chess House Thanks for you video! Could you - and other owners - tell me more about the built quality? How is the visual appearance, does it look and feel like a high-quality product? Or does it look cheap and plastic like? What about the chess pieces? How do the chess pieces feel? Do they appear fine, soild and good weighted? I'd be very happy to get an answer. Many thanks and best greetings from Germany.

    • @ChessHouse
      @ChessHouse  5 років тому +3

@Christian Herings, I can tell you my impression of the build quality. To someone who knows how nicely weighted pieces feel, even plastic pieces, this one is going to feel inferior. It does have a lightweight feel. I think that what doesn't help at all with that feeling is the lack of felt on the pieces. This means the pieces slide - almost TOO well. It's very slippery and in fact just moving the chess set to another room will be challenging to keep the pieces in their place. So as a critic myself, I think it's cheaper feeling than it could have been. Visually, the board design does not look cheap. It is fairly lightweight however, and the "open" back showing the lights is unique, but may not have been the best choice. Still for less intense critics of chess computers, I think they will really like the friendly design and features. The pieces have some weight to them, but I think the play experience is just something to get used to without felt. I think of the Excalibur Grandmaster. It's a little smaller but in some ways reminds me of that retired computer - in grayscale color.

The adaptive mode has very short term memory (one game and not over multiple games). Misleading video. You state that the pieces are, and I quote: "individually chipped" so that the computer can recognize and identify them. However, this board doesn't NOT differentiate between individual pieces. It can only detect if a piece is there or not. So, if for example you misplace a piece at the start of a game, like having the queen on the wrong colour square, the computer won't be able to detect the mistake.

    • @chessguy21
      @chessguy21 3 роки тому +2

Not a misleading video, he made a mistake. When he made the video, the board was very new.
You are correct. The pieces are NOT chipped. You do have to set the board up for the correct starting position. Just like a regular board. YOU have to make sure that the pieces are in the correct starting position. Chess 101. It's on page 5 of the manual. Same rules apply as when you start a game against a human, with the pieces in the wrong place. Simply correct the, position, or start over. You can manually tell the computer where the pieces are, and or go into setup pieces, and set them to the correct squares. The proceed with the game. Not a big deal.

Can anyone describe how the challenging level works? Will it make a stronger move if you make a good one , or will it increase its playing strength in the next game if it loses a game?

My understanding is that it will increase the playing strength after each game. Reading from people's experience so far though it's more challenging then expected.

ive read every comment and i'm amazed nobody has mentioned the fact that the centaur has problems during play it will start flashing the circle lights HERE WE GO AGAIN it either wants to take one of its own pieces or refuses to take an opposing piece the game has to stop everthings gone wonky i have bought one myself returned it and got a replacment but alas the problem pops up again quite a lot its very annoying i've tried it in all three modes very same reaction maybe somebody has some suggestion as it has some nice features and could be a good learning product i'm looking forward to some replies including chess house
