  • Disasters and conflicts can result in survivors experiencing severe psychosocial consequences. While emotional wounds are less visible than physical cuts or the loss of a home, the mental recovery process takes far longer. Thus, early psychosocial support is important to help affected communities cope with tragedies.
Psychosocial support is an integral part of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' (IFRC) emergency response, and can help individuals and communities to heal psychological wounds and rebuild social structures after emergencies and critical events. At times, psychosocial support can even help encourage passive victims to become active survivors.
This is the psychosocial objective that the Singapore Red Cross aims to achieve. Through the Academy's psychosocial support courses, participants will gain valuable skills, as well as a deeper understanding and appreciation to promote, protect, and support the well-being of populations affected by crises. Course graduates will be fully adept at planning activities that can reduce psychosocial vulnerabilities, and ultimately enhance community resilience to disasters.
