AC: Brotherhood's Multiplayer mode gave me one of my favorite online experiences ever. I was being hunted and after my pursuer took a pistol shot at me, I took off and a foot chase ensued until I rounded a corner and popped my disguise ability to blend in with a group of NPCs. A second later I see the impatient assassin run past me, look around a moment, then stab an NPC version of my main skin, voiding their contract. So satisfying.

Reminds me of back when Modern Warfare 2 was new and I would equip certain Perks and then I'd crawl on the ground and disguise myself as a corpse. It worked like a charm most of the time! Players would run past me without a second look and I'd have a clean shot of their back lol

My favorite moment wasn’t even by me. I was killed via poison by a player I never even saw. No idea when he even did it. Considering you basically have to be right beside someone to poison them, I was actually so impressed he killed me like that.

Regarding AC Brotherhood, I remember seeing those guys who would run around as well as the guys who would stand in the most conspicuous places possible so you couldn't attack them without revealing yourself. I always enjoyed trying to outfox them to get as many points and stay as hidden as possible.

My heart was beating out of my throat as we neared each other, idk if he knew who i was, but i knew which was him. it was a race to hit the assassinate button. the catharsis of having not only evaded everyone, but also killed them was unmatched. far better than just assassinating npcs in the story, who wait at ledges and bushes to be stabbed.

Gravity Rush 2's multiplayer was by far the most unique & genuinely fascinating I've ever experienced, you didn't need PS+, people _generally_ were very kind about it, & the game feels hollow for its loss. There were a couple different aspects, the one most similar to other games was this post-game dungeon thing where you can find places where other players had died & loot their ghost (still getting Distress Calls but can't act on them), but the core of it were the Challenge Missions, Treasure Hunts, & Ghosts.
Ghosts, represented as shiny blue versions of Kat, were places where other players had used the camera feature in their game, they popped up pretty randomly & if you interacted with them you could see the picture they'd taken, some of which were pretty spectacular. Interactions brought in Dusty Tokens which unlocked various rewards, items, emotes, & infinite flight & you could see when someone interacted with your photo. It unfortunately never worked particularly well, so your best bet was to just take a bunch in areas where you'd load into the game. Made the mistake of taking like 20 pictures of Dusty when I unlocked all the cat bed options. I was getting notifications for those things for weeks, it's _most_ of my Notifications.
For Challenge Missions it's basically you vs the record of someone else in various contests, either in combat or several different types of races. You'd go up against variously colored ghosts of the other players, up to 3, & it made for a hectic, fun time. I actually learned quite a lot about movement from watching these ghosts. These ghosts would also appear in gold in the over-world so you could tell when a mission was waiting for you, they'd even go through the first few seconds of their motion. ie; if you jumped straight up as soon as it started, your ghost would jump in my game when I received the challenge.
Treasure Hunts were my favorite though, basically scavenger hunts with a photo taken by the other player, you'd get a photo of the chest & hopefully enough of the surroundings to be able to hunt it down with an indicator noise for when you're close.
Furniture for your house & emotes came from treasure chests. Unfortunately now that they've shut it down permanently & therefore this content is basically forever gone. You _can_ still find treasure chests scattered throughout the world but the indicator noise is entirely gone & they randomly spawn in & out of an absolutely absurdly huge map.
Near the end of things there were a few communities that worked together to allow other players to earn the tokens & treasure chests, basically you add as many people as possible as a PSN friend so you can send Challenges, go to the first Challenge Mission & score as low as possible so all they have to do is score a few points to win. Not all the Challenge Missions were like this, there was plenty of challenge to be had with ones that unlocked later in the story, but I only saw a handful of people actually send out high scores on that first one.
Treasure Hunts were a little harder, since it entirely depends on how good a picture people took for the hint & there were way more trolls in this part of things, had more than a few that were just the chest as close as possible to the camera, but generally people were kind. Some areas of the game didn't lend themselves to this mode though, woe to anyone who got Hunts in the slum area, a genuine nightmare scenario right there especially in the weeks right before the shut down.
Never actually answered a Distress Call, but I do still get them in my notifications with new Avatars next to the text & it's kind of depressing, I try to avoid looking at that section when I boot up the game.

It's customizable and you can try out so many different loadout so you can be a healer, support, stealth, assault/dps class. And there is a lot of strategy and there's nothing like being the last person standing. It gets the heart pumping and gives such a rush.

It was quite interesting as you only ever had one companion at a time but if you lost sight of that companion, another player that was playing in the same level and was near you could/would be loaded in to be your new companion. And you could hardly tell until the end when the game listed your companions throughout your journey. There also was no real communication between two players that were somewhat co op partners/companions.

In it you pilot a POJ space pod exploring a planet while all of your ships functions from flight and engine control constantly breakdown. Fun in of itself going solo, you could assign up to two others to aid in controls of various parts of the ship to solve problems. It was very unique gameplay. Many things could only solved with communication and flawless-simultaneous co-operation. Lots of family fun. And by fun, I mean yelling.

I feel one of the coolest things about AC Brotherhood's multiplayer mode was that it did Social Stealth better than the story mode.
Social Stealth in Singleplayer wasn't actually social stealth but line of sight based stealth with a paintjob instead blending into a system where detection is based on deviations from the system. You could replace crowds and benches with bushes and the result would be the same.
In contrast, Multiplayer required you to actually watch your surroundings and act like the environment you're in to succeed rather than running around, hiding on a bench for a few seconds. Even your tools helped not by physically hiding you but by making others act in an "unacceptable" way by running around or huddling around for coins

Command & Conquer Renegade has one of the best multiplayer modes I've ever played. It was a first/third person shooter where the teams were generally about 10-20 players each, but it varied depending on the server. I've seen teams of 64 vs 64 at times.
Each team had a base with different buildings that provided a function to your team. You'd have an infantry class upgrading building, a vehicle production building, resource gathering building, automated base defenses, power plant, etc. The objective of the game was to destroy the enemy's base while protecting your own. Once a building was destroyed, it was gone for good and the team lost the functionality of that building. So, destroy an enemy power plant and all their automated defenses would shut down. Or destroy a vehicle production facility and they would no longer be able to produce vehicles, etc.
The game was a whole load of fun and worked well as a real team-based game where you'd perform coordinated assaults on the enemy's base, but it also allowed sneaky infiltration if you felt more like going lone wolf.

A personal favorite hidden gem of multiplayer modes for me is Light vs. Dark in Kid Icarus Uprising. Sure, it's more or less a team death match, but the more powerful your weapon, the more points your team lost. When it reached 0, the person who died became Pit or Dark Pit depending on the team. If they died, you lose. Defeating players while they have Pit or Dark Pit out reduced the HP of Pit/Dark Pit, but could not KO them.

You could play it stealthily and win the game with something like 3/4 kills.
I remember watching an absolute clusterfuck going off down the street. I was incognito, so about 6 people all piled in a massacre of killing their targets. Then mine came sprinting down the street towards me aaaand jooked with my hidden blade, straight to the top of the score board.
Then you’d have multiple hunters after you the higher on the board you were, and that’s when you had to just get your parkour on and Houdini people like mad, QUICK! run round the corner and decor as another NPC! Then stun your attackers when they go for the wrong one.
    It was amazing.

The Timesplitters series deserves a mention just because the built in (even on console) map editor let you create assault maps. Basically team based story maps where one side had objectives and the other had to stop them completing them. You could make your own asynchronous multiplayer games before that was even a thing!
I made a map where one team had to attach mines to a remote control cat to blow up a switch to let themselves through. Sadly this was before online gaming was really a thing, so only me and my brother ever played it. :(

Natural Selection 2 Each side has a commander that plays the game like a RTS, complete with a top down view of the map, where they can place buildings, and research upgrades. Meanwhile, all the other players played it like a FPS, acting like units in the game.
In addition, the two teams were unique. The Frontiersmen were the typical space marines with the guns and tech. The other team consisted of aliens that relied on melee attacks, but could climb on walls or fly, among other abilities.
Also, there's A Way Out, where the multiplayer relied on both players working together. What set it apart was that the game never stopped. If one player was in a cutscene, the other one could still wander around.

You didn't mention the follow-up reason as to why the Dead Space 3 co-op was so good, and that's that the premise transferred to the actual gameplay.
During the co-op missions, Carver would frequently get stuck in a hallucination, all with its own enemies (which could kill you, Dead Space hallucinations are like that), while Isaac would just "stay behind" in reality, fighting the real enemies, all the while you see Carver's character having basically a seizure, and you need to protect him. Now you might think this takes away from the "co-op", and you'd probably be right, but it was a great experience.
The reason for that is that once you started the co-op mission, there was no way to tell when and how the hallucinations would start. This would mean the Carver player would get progressively more stressed and would panic big time once stuck in the hallucination (because they're sudden, dangerous, you're alone in them, and they vary in "objectives" you need to do to get out of them), while the Isaac player suddenly realizes they have to to protect their teammate, also alone, but they have the benefit of knowing the layout, objective and most of the enemies that will appear, making them naturally more calm in the situation.
What this resulted in (if you were on voice-chat at least) was that the Carver player is stressed and panicking and has no idea what's happening, while the Isaac player is trying to snap his friend out of it so they can focus because if they won't they're both gonna die. Which is exactly what the cutscenes tell too. They managed to perfectly replicate the story elements with the gameplay. And that made it incredibly fun and atmospheric.

The first Contagion's multiplayer was quite interesting. At first glance the game seems like a spiritual successor/homage to Resident Evil Outbreak, where a group of survivors make their way cooperatively through a series of somewhat randomized levels, helping each other out by sharing ammo, healing items, and watching each other's backs. However, being a zombie game, there must be infection, and, when the option was enabled being attacked by a zombie had a chance of infecting a player with the zombie virus. As you succumb to the infection, your movements become slower, your audio starts to dim, and your screen loses color, until at last you become one of the infected. Now you have a choice: you can turn on your erstwhile teammates, summoning NPC zombies to you and mobbing them or blending into hordes until you can sink your teeth into their unsuspecting backs or, like a true hero, you can use your zombie calls to draw zombies *away* from the human survivors, helping them to escape even though you won't be able to join them. Further, if you joined a server after all the playable humans had already been selected, you'll begin the round as a zombie, where the same rules apply, except now you have no incentive to help the group of strangers you've not previously been surviving alongside.

I loved the AC multiplayer. Probably one of my most favorite game modes ever! I literally bought AC: Brotherhood and whatever the sequel was to play the multiplayer only! If only it came back and was a bit more fleshed out, I think it could be it's own standalone game.

i played as Carver in Dead Space 3, and enjoyed the different hallucinations, especialy on side missions where Carver sees giant gift boxes and toy solders. My brother honestly thought i was messing with him.

Oh God, Mike went Homer Simpson with that multitasking quip
"And they say I'm slow...WAIT A MINUTE THAT WAS AN INSULT!!!"

The Assassin's Creed multiplayer got even better when they added coop multiplayer matches where a team of four could go after AI targets for points and xp.
Best part was the variety of characters, that all had different backgrounds and customizations. Barber from Brotherhood will be my all time favorite.

Nick Robinson's YT channel is almost entirely devoted to his obsession with the genius of Driver San Francisco (how it's shift mechanic was brilliant, fun and intuitive; and how the game was taken off the market for no apparent reason, despite it being very good. His theory is the licensed cars' deals ran out, among other things). He even made a video about how it's essentially the only game to feature a segment in the "2nd Person Perspective". As we know, 1st person is you look through your character's eyes, 3rd person is basically you are the camera controlling your character remotely from various viewpoints, but what would 2nd person look/feel like?! Watch the video, it's already got millions of views, but it's truly excellent so I figured I'd plug it since Mike kind of dumped on the game a little. I thought it was superb, and a huge surprise (as a fan of the PS1 Driver games, pre-GTA 3).

Damn I really miss the multiplayer from AC Brotherhood. It really is the most fun i’ve ever had with a multiplayer mode. So damn underrated! Hope they include it in their future games.

The best part of the DS3 Co-op is that there is a full section where Isaak has to protect Carver because he's stuck in a hallucination.
