Mavic 2 | Battery Rebuild Success

  • Cell replacement battery rebuild for the Mavic . After a lot of research on forums and UA-cam, there wasn't a lot of information that I could find of people that have rebuilt a M2 battery and verified it. It was all just hearsay with no evidence and of course the back and forth comments with no actual evidence. In this experimental video I investigated the possibility of changing the cells in the battery.
You may think this is just a simple cell replacement, but DJI's BMS can be bricked. By bricked it becomes inoperable. I spent hours and sacrificed 2 batteries (because I bricked the first one) to find out what not to do. Than developed a logical way to successfully replace the cells which is when I tore up the second battery to make this video as evidence.
These batteries are expensive and most are reaching over 2 years since production, while many have had good run and are still running. There are allot more that have had them swell due to cell decomposition and gas expanding the cells. This is dangerous because they can pop off the drone in flight and you can lose your drone or damage property or hurt people.
In this experiment I did 2 things.
    1. Save money, the new battery cells x4 are 20€+shipping = 30€. A new battery costs around 130€. Most of you watching would have your batteries sitting idle and out of warranty so you're at a loss like me.
    2. Prove that it is possible without fancy and expensive reprogramming.
    I purchased the cells here : fr.aliexpress....
I am not affiliated nor do I get any kickbacks. Just sharing because Im caring.
So this is #1 method that works without any software flashing etc. I still would like to experiment more but I do not have any more spare M2 batteries to work with. So i'm open to donations of old M2 batteries that are bloated or have bad cells haha.
Also if anyone knows where I can buy empty M2 battery shells, that would be awesome to actually make a refurbished battery.

Video is at 60FPS so you can slow down to 25% if you need. I did this to reduce the playback time. Thé LED/Switch ribbon was left connected so I could check the battery status during the experiment.

    Hi Anthony,
First of all many thanks for sharing your experiments!
It's saves to others time and avoid us wasting expensive batteries, even dead.
I carefully followed your battery rebuilt process and something caught my attention.
The battery cells sold by our good friend Ali Xpress comes separated from each other as...individual cells.
On our Mavic's (2 Pro in my case), four cells are working together being welded on a base circuit.
So, if I well understand your way how to proceed:
    1. You get a spare base welding battery circuit coming from a "dead donnor" battery (meaning that its BMS being disconnected from power is considered as dead)
    2. You prepare the new batteries cells set by welding them on the base circuit coming from the dead donnor
    3. Then you power the damaged battery set in parallel with an external power source in order to keep the BMS powered
    4. The genuine cells base circuit coming from the damaged battery are split from their base circuit, keeping the BMS powered by an external power source
    5. The new cells set welded on its base circuit is then welded connected to the BMS
    6. Once the welded connection between the new cells set and the BMS is done you check the voltage
    7. You disconnect the external power source used to maintain the BMS under power
    8. Then I guess that you retreive the base circuit from the damaged cells in order to re-use it on the next fix as the cells needs to be prepared before splitting the BMS from the base circuit
If I well understand the process it means that a battery BMS must sacrified to retreive the cells base circuit... this one being necessary to prepare a cells swap under power.
    I am right ?
Thanks a lot for your appreciated support
    Laurent

    • @ANTHONYVLOG
      @ANTHONYVLOG  Рік тому

Hi Laurent, yes that is correct in all your steps. I have made another video to reactivate the BMS, so the process in this video is if you don't have a CP2112 + DBK software. Maybe you can look at that video and you might be able to rebuild another battery and activate the BMS.
If I had a donor battery I would do it a little different.
      1. Prepare replacement cells.
The donor battery is dismantled and the battery is disconnected from the battery PCB (The battery PCB is the one that the cells are soldered to, it does not have any important components, it is just for the cells assembly. You will notice the Red/Black and the Blanca cable/connector.)
Install the new cells in the same order on the donor battery PCB. At this time it's completely disconnected from the BMS.
Once the new cells are soldered into the donor battery board. You are ready to swap into the target battery.
      2. Open target battery (battery you intend to use), disconnect only the Balance connector and leave the Red and Black connected.
Now you connect the Balance connector from the previous battery PCB that you just replaced with new cells. This will provide power through the Balance connector.
You can now disconnect the old battery RED and Black lines from the BMS. It will be powered by the rebuilt pack. Then you solder in the Red and Black to complete the exchange. In this way, there is no need for an external power supply as I did. I did not have a donor battery so could not make more options.

      @@ANTHONYVLOG
      Anthony,
Many thanks for your fast and kind answer to my questions, that's very kind from you. I will thoroughly follow your suggestions once the new cells will arrive.
At the moment I am awaiting the delivery of my CP2112 adaptors, hence I wanted to get rid of it use by using an alternate method. As soon as I'll get the CP2112 I try to use it along with DBK.
It looks pretty interesting to have an alternate mean to fix the DJI batteries glitches as their cost is pretty exaggerated.
On some points their bugs remain not understandable.
For example on one battery unit I own, having only 19 cycles, the battery accepts to load, the batteries LED indicators works fine without displaying any kind of malfunction signal.
Once installed into the drone the battery works correctly, the Smart Controller shows each unit along with the total, cycles numbers.
Everything looks and behave as normal.
However, as soon as I try to start the motors a message displays saying the battery is not correctly installed into the drone...so it is correctly installed.
The battery is absolutely normal, no sign of swollen, so the installation is a perfect fit into the fuselage.
All the connectors have been thoroughly been checked using an electronical microscope to be sure nothing is obstructing a connector.
The connectors are as clean as a 19 cycles battery can be.
So, I hope the use of CP2112 and DBK will allow me to save this almost new battery.
By the way, after having watched some of your external video's shoots, it seems that we live close from each other as I live in Geneva.
Thanks again for your kind support and advised advice!
      Laurent

@@laurentvelati7565 oh yes. Very close indeed! For the battery that gives the warning for « not installed correctly » if the battery like the Mavic 2, it has two small switches on the locking tabs that tell the BMS if it’s closed or open. A malfunction in the switch can cause this problem even if the battery is good 👍

I’m a qualified electronics engineer and I would have done that a little differently but none the less keeping it simple the way you showed us will do the job quite fine, I would have used my lab power supply that way one pack won’t interact with the other pack by soldering them in parallel. One thing is the more exact you can be with your voltages the better ie: if swollen pack is let’s say 15.45 then your pack your using to jump across should also be 15.45 and your new pack also be 15.45 it’s all about keeping those number absolutely exactly the same and then you will not have any scary moments. To ensure packs are identical in voltage you need to have them sit and settle after a charge and make sure they are resting at the exact voltages otherwise they drift if you use them right after a charge and I don’t know what that would mean to the intelligent BMS in the DJI batts, maybe nothing, maybe a false voltage displayed who know without seeing the BMS programming and schematic. Thanks for the video it was informative, it will help many including me, as I would have disconnected the BMS thinking it would be fine, so thank you for the video!

I tried your early method and kept power to the BMS. Unfortunately after putting it back together, I can't read the BMS now and the first led just blinks all the time. It won't take a charge. When I do press on the power button, all four leds light up. The voltage at the battery pack is correct. Did I completely kill the BMS?

    Hello @ANTHONYVLOG
You do not need to do this whole process. First unsolder the red cable then unsolder the black cable and then unplug the balance cable! When you connect the new battery do the opposite, first conect the balance cable, then solder the black cable and last solder the red cable. The BMS will never be bricked in this way.

Since the date of this, I didn’t adjust the cell chemistry or captivity in the BQ programming. The batteries work to full capacity, charge and dischargeW the only thing I reset was the cycle count and reset it to zero as it was new cells.
The capacity that is programmed originally will not be changed until you change it. And you only change it if your cells are / have a different capacity.
The BMS doesn’t bother with what charge it had before the change, if the cells are the same capacity it will charge / discharge as normal.

Since it doesn’t know we’ve replaced cells it should not try to push more mahs than he was able last time as the capacity magically couldn’t increase to prevent explosions etc. Are you 100% sure that in order to get full designed capacity od 2375mah all i need to do is replace all 3 cells for brand new ones and reset cycle count for reference? TRB is the paid option as it only allows free viewing but no unlocking. For the free option you will have to opt for the CP2112 adaptor and the DBK software which is in the description of video titled “DJI Dead Battery - Fix with CP2112 Adaptor”.
The condition for any of these softwares to work to be able to read the BMS is that the cells need to be above 3500mV (3.5v) each and a maximum discrepancy between cells 150mV.
Please let me know after you watched that one and if you have any more questions.
